Can this Sunderland ace get his career in England back on track?

Cup games can often be full of narratives. The will he or won’t he, the can they or can’t they, or even the should he or shouldn’t he? The first leg of Manchester United and Sunderland’s Capital One Cup Semi-Final provided us with a particularly interesting storyline, as Fabio Borini stepped up to take a second-half penalty at 1-1.

It’s fair to say that the on-loan Liverpool striker hasn’t enjoyed the most fruitful of spells in England. A youth prospect at Chelsea, the Italian found himself on the peripheries in West London, with the Blues’ star-studded attacking set-up of the time blocking his path into the first-team squad. This resulted in a loan move to Swansea, his first link up with Brendan Rodgers. He may only have been there a short time, but the front-man helped the Swans secure promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs, leading to rumours that his role at Stamford Bridge may be increased. However that was not the case, as he was soon back in his homeland to join Roma.

Fast-forward another year and he was on an aeroplane from the Italian capital bound for Liverpool John Lennon Airport to join up with Rodgers at Anfield – as his first major signing since swapping South Wales for Merseyside. Much was expected of Borini, with a large price tag – £10.5m – and an impressive goal return at Roma seemingly putting him at the forefront of a new Liverpool side that was set to swap the pragmatism and disappointment that had haunted the reigns of Roy Hodgson and Kenny Dalglish respectively for a new expansive playing style.

But after flitting in and out of the first-team – injuries played their part – the pressure on Borini began to grow. Daniel Sturridge’s impact in the final third, allied to the majestic Luis Suarez, rendered his role in the Reds’ team for the current season obsolete, with no European football set to minimise the fixtures in which he could play a part.

As a result Sunderland came calling, with colourful Italian Paolo Di Canio keen to offer his compatriot the game time he needed. The move went through, yet shortly after the ex-Swindon boss was dismissed and Borini looked once again to be in the wilderness.

However, Gus Poyet has turned to Borini in recent months, with the 22-year-old getting his chance in the starting XI and from the bench. Memorable goals such as the Tyne-Wear derby-winning effort have caused confidence to flood back into his game, as the minutes tick by.

So when he stepped up after Tom Cleverley’s foolish tackle had resulted in a penalty it seemed a pivotal moment for Borini, and indeed in the Capital One Cup as a competition. Miss, and his self-belief may evaporate into the Sunderland night sky. Score, and the ecstasy would weep onto the turf below his boots. As the ball flew goalwards from his right boot, for a split second it looked as if the crossbar may be the figurative line between success and failure, with the white sphere of hope perilously close to the metal bar of disappointment. The Stadium of Light took a breath of expectation. In a ground known for its atmosphere there was an audible silence. But this was pierced after an eternal second, as the ball swooshed along the roof of the net to set up what could be a key victory for the Black Cats.

After playing such a pivotal role in the game, Borini is sure to find his name on the team sheet at Old Trafford, with 90 minutes – plus possible extra time and the prospect of penalty kicks – standing between the relegation battlers and a trip to Wembley. With another solid performance, the much travelled youngster may get the confidence boost he needs to really kick on and fulfil the potential he has given glimpses of.

Having represented four-time World Cup winners Italy at a senior level – albeit on one occasion – Borini’s talent is not in doubt, but is his sense of belief that needs building up after the wrecking balls of his time at Liverpool and Chelsea knocked it to its very foundations.

A Capital One Cup Final appearance, for which he may have netted the most important goal, could be just the remedy for the hurt suffered, and form the turning point for Borini’s career in English football. Rodgers will surely be paying close attention, and as the final whistle rings around Old Trafford – which is not the fortress it once was – we may have a new player on our hands, and one ready to truly prove himself.

Potentially an astute signing for Manchester United?

It has been revealed that Manchester United are reportedly considering the signing of Brede Hangeland from Fulham this January.

Hangeland would be available for a free transfer next summer when his contract at Craven Cottage expires, but Sir Alex Ferguson may want to beat the last-minute scramble for his signature and pay a small fee for his services in January.

Would the Norwegian represent a good signing for Ferguson’s side, considering their defensive issues at the start of the season?

The 31-year-old has proved that he is a centre-back of tremendous quality since arriving at Fulham from FC Copenhagen in 2008, with his towering height and no-nonsense attitude being comparable to Nemanja Vidic.

At this present moment in time, United are desperately struggling with defensive injuries; and Ferguson only has Johnny Evans and Rio Ferdinand as his two remaining fit centre-halves, after Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Vidic were all ruled out of action.

This has had an evident detrimental effect on the team, as the Red Devils have conceded eleven goals in ten matches; and kept just three clean sheets so far this season in all competitions.

These are worrying statistics for Ferguson to reflect over, so the need for a player like Hangeland is there to see.

The factors which could hold United back from making a move, concern the fact that the Norwegian is 31-years-old and goes against the club’s transfer policy of buying players for the future; as well as it potentially halting the progress of promising youngsters such as Michael Keane and Scott Wooton from breaking into the first-team.

In addition, once the defensive crisis eases United could have six available central defenders, including the prospective signing of Hangeland.

Surely Ferguson would see this as too many defenders on the books and leads to doubts as to whether he would make such an impulsive move in January.

But injuries in defensive positions is nothing new at Old Trafford; and there are fears that Vidic is no longer the imposing figure he once was before damaging cruciate knee ligaments last December.

Vidic will have one year left on his contract at the end of this season, with reports linking him with moves to either Barcelona or Juventus; and Ferguson could see this as his best chance to buy a cheap replacement for the Serbian, if he shares these fears.

If a player like Vidic decides to leave the club, then the signing of Hangeland justifies its logic. However, if there are no departures, then it would be hard to envisage the arrival of the Norwegian, especially as key defenders gradually return to fitness and if players like Vidic return to the peak of their powers.

Tottenham fans destroy Rose for hinting he’ll stay

Tottenham fans are absolutely crucifying Danny Rose, after the England full back seems to have had a change of heart.

Spurs fans were bashing Danny Rose this week when reports suggested Everton were the only club interested in the left back.

The 27 year-old, who was named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad on Wednesday, has only started nine times in the Premier League this season.

Rose was heavily linked with Manchester United, and fans were perhaps starting to get used to the idea of a swap deal for Luke Shaw.

The former fan favourite looked all set to try and force a move away from North London as he did last summer, but now says he is focused on the future with Tottenham.

“I like to think everyone has moved on. I am here and I am looking forward to coming back to pre-season and hopefully me and Ben can start fresh and fight for the number one position,” Rose said.

Ben Davies has of course moved ahead of Rose in the pecking order this season, and it does seem like quite a coincidence that Rose is now changing his tune after reports suggested Everton is his only other choice.

Fans are absolutely destroying him on Twitter, and some of the best reactions can be found below…

In Focus: Malcom can bring fresh ideas to Tottenham’s creative endeavours

As reported by The Daily Mail, Tottenham have entered the race to sign talented Brazilian winger Malcom in this month’s transfer window.

What’s the story?

While the ever impressive Harry Kane hasn’t slowed down his scoring habits, Tottenham’s other usually reliable players haven’t quite hit the heights of last season so far this term and as the January transfer window opens, freshening up their attack could really ensure they have a successful second half of the season.

One player they’re said to be interested in is Bordeaux winger Malcom.

That’s according to The Daily Mail, who say that Spurs have expressed an interest in signing the attacker, who his club rate at £40m.

However, the paper also report that they’ll face competition from the likes of Manchester United and Bayern Munich for his signature, with Bordeaux also not keen on selling him until the summer.

Who is he?

At just 20 years of age, Malcom has yet to truly test himself at the top level of the game but is showing plenty of potential in Ligue 1, demonstrating he could be ready for his big move to a more illustrious league.

So far this season he’s scored seven goals and provided five assists in 20 appearances for the French club, the kind of attacking contribution that could make him a hit with Tottenham supporters, especially considering he is already doing it at a team struggling to pick up positive results in French football. Surrounded by better players he could flourish even more.

He has the ability to play on the left or right wings, making him a versatile choice for Mauricio Pochettino too, who could use some competition to motivate the likes of Son Heung-min, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli.

With his entire career ahead of him, getting in early and securing his talent before even bigger clubs come calling would be good business from Tottenham’s perspective.

Why Manchester United fans must look to the future

David Moyes would have been made well aware of the task facing him at Old Trafford when he accepted the offer to succeed Alex Ferguson. And while the League Cup win over Stoke and the 3-0 win away to Aston Villa would have been greeted extremely warmly at Manchester United, there must now be an acceptance that periods of long-term success are still on the cards, but not without short-term difficulties.

There is no quick-fix for the wider problems at the club. If that were the case, an individual like Jose Mourinho would be in the dugout, rather than David Moyes and a six-year contract. The club need fresh faces and those who are both willing to work and buy into the new manager’s ideas, but the project at hand is that of an overhaul, not a matter of simple tweaking.

The squad available to Moyes at this time is one that Ferguson built, partly for a view to the future as seen by recent signings such as Phil Jones, David de Gea and Chris Smalling, but also one that would have allowed him to go out on a high – the signing of Robin van Persie.

The League Cup is perfectly set up for a Manchester derby in the final, but beyond that, it is possible that it will be a few seasons before United see success in the way of the Premier League title. Moyes must reshape a group of overachievers into a squad that both fits his ideals but is also ready and capable of mounting strong charges on multiple fronts. What we saw at Aston Villa was impressive, but United have been far from the frontrunners of consistency this season.

For all that can be said of United’s success in the past, the club can be excused for going through a transitional period. Such is the changing face of football that no club, even the elite’s of European football, is exempt from having to experience a lull.

What Moyes needs – and what many are confident he’ll get – is time to establish himself. We know what he’s capable of in the Premier League, but taking on a weight of expectation of this magnitude would be foreign to most managers. Moreover, he’s hardly been given the tools to hit the ground running. Any difficulty in instantly repeating title success is more than understandable.

The club should look to lock horns with the biggest clubs in Europe for the world-class players who become available, but the importance, more than the price, is the construct of a team who are capable of maintaining a stay at the top for long spells. Moyes, on the evidence of his six-year deal, has been adjudged to be more than good enough to oversee such a project.

United are still one of the biggest draws in world football, but taking a short-term hit is often necessary to rebuild a squad, one that is good enough to maintain a stay where a club of United’s stature should be.

Davis ponders loan extension of Arsenal ace

Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis is currently considering whether to extend the loan of highly rated Arsenal youngster Chuks Aneke, according to Sky Sports.

The 19-year-old picked up a straight red card on his full debut after a two footed challenge on Stevenage’s Anthony Grant in a 2-2 draw last week. As a consequence of Aneke’s 3-match ban, the midfielder will now only be available to play for the Railwaymen for one more game – which is at home to Oldham on October 2nd – before his loan spell expires.

Alexandra boss Davis admits he was frustrated by the red card, “We are now without Chuks for three games and it is disappointing because we are short of midfield players. It is also disappointing for Chuks because he wanted to come here and show everyone the ability he has.”

Davis believes that the England under-19 international is keen to remain at Gresty Road, “He wants to play and we will discuss about extending his loan or not when the time comes. We haven’t made a decision yet and I will contact (assistant manager) Steve Bould at Arsenal and discuss things. He would have seen the challenge and know he isn’t that sort of player.”

The Crewe manager believes that it would be a disservice to Aneke’s talent if he wasn’t to extend his stay in the midlands, “Chuks has the ability and it is a shame that he hasn’t been able to have the impact he would have wanted because of his three-match suspension.”

Underrated Ryan Fraser would add tenacity, versatility and quality to West Ham’s squad

Amid all the big-money superstars and ludicrously well-paid Premier League entities that are part footballer part international brand, sometimes it’s easy to overlook promising young players with unfashionable, British names that play for unfashionable clubs.

Although Bournemouth are more stylish than most outside the current top six, who have spent much of the season resorting to hoofball tactics to avoid relegation, their creative midfielder Ryan Fraser firmly falls into that category.

Fraser’s time in the Premier League with the Cherries has been laced with little moments of quality, and Bournemouth’s 1-0 win over Swansea City on Saturday provided another example. While the Welsh side were no doubt caught napping at a set piece, Fraser’s curled finish gave Lukasz Fabianski no chance of saving his shot from the edge of the box – and that moment of perfect technique proved to be the difference in a game of minimal margins at the Vitality Stadium.

But there’s an edge to the 24-year-old’s game as well, that typical aggression players of modest stature – measuring in at just 5 foot 4 – sometimes need to survive on the same pitch as the many beastly physical specimens in the Premier League. While he’s not a hugely prolific tackler or powerful presence, there’s an energetic edge to Fraser. He was once described as an ‘anxious’ player and that really stands out in his movement – whether with the ball or without it, he always carries a sense of urgency, a desire to do things quickly and diligently.

Fraser’s shown these abilities before, but this season particularly feels like something of a breakthrough. For starters, he’s already set a career-best haul of five goals and could add to it during Bournemouth’s final outing of the campaign at Burnley. But perhaps more significantly, 2017/18 has shown what he offers Eddie Howe’s side in terms of versatility.

Previously, the two-cap Scot’s been at his best for Bournemouth when taking up advanced roles, particularly when he’s found ways to drift into central areas and really drive at the opposition with the ball at feet. But this season, his most influential performances have come at wing-back, a position that requires relentless fitness and a dose of defensive maturity – knowing when to support the backline rather than join the attack, and knowing that one positional error could leave his entire flank glaringly exposed.

That only adds to Fraser’s appeal, especially amid a period in which three-man defences have become an increasingly popular setup in the Premier League. The diminutive midfielder has played as a wing-back on both sides this season and plenty of managers in the division would like that versatile option, including David Moyes at West Ham; while Arthur Masuaku and Pablo Zabaleta have been amongst the Irons’ best performers this season, their results have desperately declined when one has been absent.

Fraser lacks Masuaku’s tricky explosiveness and Zabaleta’s impressive nous but would be a solid backup option to both – someone who offers real tenacity and quality of delivery from out wide.

And even if West Ham revert back to a four-man defence next season, Fraser’s already shown he can be effective in more advanced roles too. Valued at just £4.5million by Transfermarkt and still yet to enter his peak years, would you back a swoop for Fraser West Ham fans? Let us know by voting…

In Focus: Ryan Hardie deserves a proper chance at Rangers before exit

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Rangers forward Ryan Hardie is the subject of interest from English Championship side Queens Park Rangers.

What’s the story?

Hardie returned from a season out on loan at St Mirren and Raith Rovers in the summer but has struggled to establish himself in the first-team and with his contract set to expire, he could be the latest young prospect to leave the club for a fraction of his potential value.

That’s according to The Scottish Sun, who say Queens Park Rangers are lining up a move for him, looking to add talent to their U23s side.

That means the Light Blues would either lose him on a free transfer next summer or face selling him next month.

Does he deserve a chance?

With Kenny Miller confirmed to be out injured for a significant period of time, there’s never been a better time for Hardie to get his opportunity in the Rangers team if they can convince him to sign a new contract at the club.

The striker scored 13 goals out on loan last season and his industrious work rate and youthful exuberance could add real energy to Rangers’ attacking set-up, especially working under Graeme Murty, who will know all about Hardie having worked with the player at U20s level.

He deserves his chance and seeing move to the Championship would be frustrating for supporters, who are crying out for an attacking talent to emerge from Rangers’ youth sides and stake a first team claim.

Football fans react to threats from One Direction fans

Football fans have rushed on Twitter in response to a few One Direction fans who threatened Aston Villa’s Gabriel Agbonlahor over the injury of Louis Tomlinson.

The footballer and the boy-band member where both competing on Stiliyan Petrov’s charity match at Celtic Park when during second half Tomlinson injured his knee after a fair challenge by the former England international. The 21-year-old then threw up once he exited the pitch.

A few One Direction fanatics took it on Twitter to issue some pretty weird threats towards the Villa player. The users then either deleted those tweets that made news or erased their profiles.

“I’ll kill you Gabby Agbonlahor for hurting my man,” said a girl who’s dream apparently is to become Mrs. Tomlinson.

Another one, who either wants to be Tomlinson’s girlfriend or mother, said: “Are you ok? If he hurt you I promise that I’ll kill him!!! No one can hurt my baby!!! Grrrr!!”

Perhaps the most distressed boy-band fan just wrote that she wishes to chop the Villa forward’s testicles.

Fans of the game though took it upon themselves to answer those tweets by supporting the 26-year-old whose life is still definitely safe. It is fair to say that the Villa man’s supporters are also not very hot about One Direction.

Agbonlahor is set to apologise to Tomlinson but for the time-being here are a few reactions to those ‘threats’:

Falcao dismisses transfer claims

Atletico Madrid striker, Radamel Falcao has been embarrassed by some unwelcome claims by his father, stating that it is his son’s dream to play for Real Madrid. Sky Sports reports.

Falcao’s standing in European football could not be higher at the moment, after his stunning hat-trick helped Atletico crush Chelsea 4-1 in the UEFA Super Cup.

Radamel Garcia told Spanish television that his son’s dream move would be to Real Madrid, but would consider playing in England, with Chelsea and Manchester City reportedly interested in the striker.

“Of course he wants to go to the 2014 World Cup, but most of all, he wants to go to Real Madrid – he will change teams at the end of the year”, Garcia boldly claimed.

But there are suggestions that Garcia’s claims should be taken with a pinch of salt, after previously stating that it was his son’s dream to play for Chelsea and that a deal would be very likely in January.

Falcao himself was keen to dismiss the speculation through his twitter account: “Just so the whole world is clear: my dream is to win titles with Atletico Madrid and to qualify for the World Cup with Colombia.”
