    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Milner played in the first three Premier League games of the 2024/25 season for Brighton before a thigh injury saw him sidelined until the final game of the season, where he came off the bench for the final minute of their clash with Tottenham. Now, he will aim to break back into Fabian Hurzeler's starting XI.

  • WHAT FABIAN HURZELER SAID

Hurzeler told Brighton's website: “I’m really pleased we will have James with us again this season. Last season he wasn’t able to help the team on the pitch as much as he would have liked, but around the squad his experience is invaluable, especially for the younger players.

"He’s a great guy to have in our environment, who is always there for me and the team. I’m looking forward to working with him again.”

Now, as his exit has been confirmed, Frank has posted a touching goodbye to the Bees. He joined the club as assistant manager in 2016 and was promoted to first-team head coach in 2018, guiding the club into the Premier League and keeping them up thereafter, and he has reserved special praise for owner Matthew Benham for having the faith to appoint him.

WHAT FRANK SAID

In his statement, Frank said: "To everyone associated with Brentford Football Club. The time has come for me to move on. But, even as I leave, I know I have left a big piece of my heart at Brentford, not just at the football club but with the community and, of course, the incredible and loyal supporters.

"I want to extend my profound gratitude to the club for giving me the chance to pursue my dreams and for everyone involved who made the journey such a memorable one.

"For my family and I, it has been a privilege to be allowed to be part of such a special community – it’s an experience and adventure that we will cherish for life. So, thank you. "Everybody has contributed, and every contribution has been invaluable. I am not just leaving a football club, I am saying goodbye to friends whose support through good and bad times I will carry with me always.

"I would like to say a special word of thanks to Matthew Benham. His trust and friendship have meant so much and the fact he gave me a chance in English football means I will always owe him a debt of gratitude. Thank you, Matt.

"So, while this is a goodbye, I hope the relationships I have built with everybody will be lasting ones and, of course, we will meet again in the wonderful world of football.

"Thank you, Thomas."

Frank's first match in charge of Spurs could come in a pre-season north London derby against Arsenal on July 31.

Wood cracks open Australia's second innings after Bairstow blitz keeps England in control

Bairstow’s unbeaten 99 extends England’s lead before Wood’s pace is again the x-factor

Andrew McGlashan21-Jul-2023Another brilliant, high-octane spell from Mark Wood cracked open Australia’s second innings after Jonny Bairstow’s blitz continued England’s batting rampage at Old Trafford as they did all they could to buy themselves enough time to beat a poor weekend weather forecast and level the Ashes series. After Bairstow’s unbeaten 99, with 50 coming from his last 31 balls, had extended England’s lead to 275, Wood’s pace was again the x-factor in their attack. He had removed Usman Khawaja in his first over before returning deep in the final session to bounce out Steven Smith (claiming him for the second time in the game) for his 100th Test wicket and Travis Head to leave Australia tottering on 108 or 4.Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Marsh survived through to the close, but it had been a chastening two days for Australia who will need all the help they can get to retain the Ashes here and avoid a decider at The Oval next week, for which they surely wouldn’t be favourites.Bairstow had been stranded one short of a rollicking century when James Anderson was trapped lbw by Cameron Green to end a barnstorming last-wicket stand of 66 which left Australia ragged and rattled. The ‘big three’ quicks – Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins – returned a combined economy rate of 5.22 and for just the second time in Tests together all conceded over 100.In theory, England had two-and-a-half days to make it count after scoring at an eye-watering 5.49 through their 107.4 overs. In reality, though, they looked sure to have far less time than that to secure the win they need to take the series down to the wire and remain on course to be only the second team to come back from 2-0 down to win. The forecast for Saturday remained exceedingly bleak while Sunday was not good – they will hope that, not for the first time, it proves wrong.England batted longer than many thought likely – they were 189 ahead at lunch and 209 when the ninth wicket fell – but clearly valued as big a lead as possible and with Bairstow carting the ball around the overs were being used effectively. Bowling time, though, will likely be at a premium but the four wickets they have taken means they may not need a huge window in the weather. They got through Australia’s opening pair either side of tea. Khawaja and David Warner had progressed reasonably comfortably against the new ball before Wood, in his first over, grazed Khawaja’s outside edge. Khawaja went for the DRS after talking to Warner and the spike was confirmed.Related

Warner fell for another middling score when Chris Woakes claimed him for the second time in the game. After fizzing a delivery past the outside edge, he then had Warner in two minds and he deflected down into his stumps.Smith came close to falling second ball when he edged Woakes low to Joe Root at first slip. Root did not celebrate the catch at all, but indicated to the umpires he thought it was out and it was sent to the TV official, Kumar Dharmasena. After much rocking and rolling Dharmasena determined that Root had not got his fingers under the ball in what was another borderline decision in a summer where there have been numerous examples.Smith and Labuschagne worked hard to navigate their way through the final session on a surface showing signs of some variable bounce, which had been on display for Root’s wicket the previous day. But, once again, Wood made the difference as he got Smith into difficulties with a short ball that he attempted to pull and could only get a glove through to Bairstow. Unsurprisingly, England went at Head with the bouncer straight away and it only took seven deliveries to pay dividends when he fended a glove into the gully, unable to get out of the line.England had resumed on 384 for 4 after their Zak Crawley-inspired rampage the day before. They did not quite find top gear during the morning session, although these things are all relative and 122 runs still came from 24 overs. Australia delayed taking the second new ball and the softer, older version made strokeplay tougher work.Stokes had signalled his intent early by charging down and hoicking Starc over midwicket, but he and Harry Brook didn’t completely throw caution to wind. Stokes went to his half-century from 72 balls before playing around a delivery from Cummins to give the forlorn Australia captain his first wicket of the innings.Brook’s fifty came from 80 deliveries before he fell shortly after Australia opted for the new ball after 90 overs, the first time they had taken it in the series, when he top-edged Josh Hazlewood to long leg. Starc judged the catch expertly near the rope and as he ran in to his team-mates, mimicked scraping it along the ground in reference to his denied catch at Lord’s.Hazlewood added Woakes (England’s first duck of the series) and Wood before lunch, then claimed what will likely sit among his least-decorated five-wicket hauls when Stuart Broad skied a return catch.Jonny Bairstow launches another six over deep square leg•Getty ImagesStokes could have considered calling an end to the innings, but to roars from his home crowd Anderson came to the middle for what might have been his final Test innings on the ground. He played his part by fending off numerous short deliveries, but also managed one crunching pull against Cummins. There were chaotic scenes, too, during the partnership as he and Bairstow three times stole byes to Alex Carey, whose underarming at the stumps was less accurate than it at been at Lord’s.Bairstow went to his fifty with a trademark whip-pull for six off the hip against Starc – and that was just the start. He had now flicked to one-day mode (if that’s even a thing with England’s Test batting) and one of his sixes over the leg side endangered the windows of the new hotel complex. Even Stokes was seen mouthing ‘wow, that’s huge’ from the dressing room.Having got to 98 with a ferocious swat through the covers, a stolen bye at the start of the next over got him back on strike. Two balls later he drove firmly towards long-off and Anderson was ready to sprint back for the second, but Bairstow told him to stay put. Next delivery, Anderson went too far across against Green. It heralded the start of the third innings that will decide this match. England could not have done any more to set up their position; now all they can do is hope they get enough time to make it count. Australia, meanwhile, will be praying for two days of rain. It’s been a remarkable turnaround.

Liverpool battling Barcelona to sign 107-goal striker on 2025 free transfer

Liverpool and Barcelona are believed to be battling to complete the free signing of a “clinical” attacking player this summer, according to a fresh transfer claim.

Liverpool's centre forward issues this season

The Reds are still smarting after their 2-1 loss to Newcastle United in the EFL Cup final on Sunday, on a hugely disappointing afternoon for Arne Slot and his players.

Liverpool’s performance at Wembley was flat from the off, and as has been the case too often this season, not enough impact came from the centre forward position. Diogo Jota couldn’t get into the game and is generally struggling for form at the moment, not scoring since the 1-1 draw away to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League in January.

Diogo Jota is substituted off for Liverpool

The Portuguese is far from the Reds’ only issue in that area, however, with Darwin Nunez still far from the complete striker that Liverpool hoped he would become when they signed him from Benfica in the summer of 2022.

Meanwhile, Luis Diaz has had his moments in a new central role when used there this season, but too often, he has also looked like a square peg in a round hole, playing better in his preferred left-sided position. For that reason, a new striker is needed at the end of the season, and it looks like the Merseysiders are trying to snap up a prolific marksman.

Liverpool battling to sign 107-goal striker

According to a report from Spain, Liverpool are tussling with Barcelona to sign Lille star Jonathan David in the summer window, with the Frenchman available on a free transfer once this campaign reaches its conclusion.

The Reds see him as a “perfect option to complement their offensive stars”, with the update adding that they “could benefit from his ability to quickly adapt to the Premier League, given his versatility and knack for performing under pressure.”

Lille'sJonathanDavidcelebrates scoring their first goal with Edon Zhegrov

David could be a fantastic option to lead the line for Liverpool moving forward, having been such an impressive performer for Lille, scoring 107 goals in 224 appearances.

The 24-year-old has also shone for Canada, netting 31 times in just 59 caps for his country, while football talent scout Jacek Kulig hailed his “clinical” nature as one of many key attributes in the past.

A new centre forward is a must for Liverpool in the summer, and with David, it is hard to find many negatives to them bringing him in as their striker of choice.

The fact that he would come in on a free makes it an added bonus, and given his age and all-round profile, he has the potential to be the next attacking star at Anfield.

Sussex batting thrives against stragglers Derbyshire on Hove opening day

Sussex 376 for 7 (Clark 96, Haines 86, Carter 56, Hudson-Prentice 52*) vs DerbyshireTom Clark top-scored with 96 and three of his team-mates also made half-centuries as Sussex took the first-day honours against second division strugglers Derbyshire at Hove.Having put Sussex in, Derbyshire squandered any advantage offered by a pitch with a covering of live grass during a careless first session at the 1st Central County Ground when they conceded 150 runs without parting openers Clark and Tom Haines.Haines fell for 86 to the first ball after lunch and Clark went on to a season’s best before both Ollie Carter and Fynn Hudson-Prentice passed fifty for the fifth time this season after tea as Sussex closed on 376 for seven.Sussex have yet to lose this season but badly need a second win to strengthen their hopes of promotion in the LV= Insurance County Championship and would have been pleased with their day’s work, although Clark and Haines will be disappointed not to have got to three figures.Despite its green tinge the surface is dry and few balls misbehaved all day. Off-spinner Alex Thomson picked up three wickets for the first time in a year after being called into the attack as early as the 17th over, but the Derbyshire seamers found little help from either the surface or the Kookaburra ball being used for the second time this summer.Skipper Leus du Plooy employed six bowlers in the morning session without reward as Sussex’s two left-handers made serene progress at more than five runs an over. Haines was the more aggressive, hitting 15 fours, and it was a surprise when he pushed forward to the first ball after lunch as Thomson found a modicum of turn and edged to slip.It was the start of a productive afternoon for Derbyshire who bowled with more discipline, although they were helped by some questionable shot selection by Sussex’s batters.Skipper Tom Alsop drove loosely at Suranga Lakmal and was caught at slip and James Coles, who’d just hit Thomson for a straight six, tried a repeat and instead holed out to long on.Clark and Carter added 55 for the fourth wicket with few alarms and Clark was on course for his first hundred of the season when he tried to drive Thomson down the ground and picked out Du Plooy, who took a comfortable catch at long off. Clark hit 14 boundaries but he knew he’d missed out on a sizeable score as he trudged off.George Scrimshaw, playing his first Championship match for nearly a year, wasn’t afraid to test out the middle of the pitch and was rewarded in the 78th over when Dan Ibrahim, who had struggled for fluency, wafted at a bouncer and was caught at backward square leg.Carter has been Sussex’s most consistent batter and in his unfussy but effective way he passed fifty for third successive match only to fall to a leg-side strangle and give Scrimshaw his second wicket.Nathan McAndrew lost his off stump to Lakmal when Derbyshire took the new ball, having been dropped at second slip by Haider Ali off Sam Conners in the previous over. But former Derbyshire all-rounder Fynn Hudson-Prentice hit Conners for four successive fours on his way to a 46-ball half-century and even nightwatchman Ari Karvelas enjoyed himself, lofting Anuj Dal over the pavilion roof just before stumps.

Reporter drops 4-word update from Nottingham Forest on Gibbs-White's future

A reporter has now dropped a four-word update from Nottingham Forest on the future of talisman Morgan Gibbs-White, as he continues to be a driving force behind the club’s fantastic season.

Nottingham Forest transfer news

The Reds’ win over Ipswich Town on Saturday moved them a step closer to achieving their dream of securing Champions League football for next season. It has been a terrific campaign for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, with the likes of Chris Wood, Anthony Elanga, Elliot Anderson, and Gibbs-White at the heart of their success.

But Forest could be the victims of their own success, as Gibbs-White is a player who is very much in demand. The midfielder has got admirers from both Manchester United and Liverpool as he continues to impress in the Premier League and has earned recognition on the international stage as well.

That interest in Gibbs-White has seen Forest join the race to sign Semih Kilicsoy from Turkish giants Besiktas. They are said to value the 19-year-old at £17 million, which has alerted other Premier League teams such as Aston Villa and Newcastle United, as well as Forest.

The Turkey under-21 international has really impressed for Besiktas this season, scoring three goals and recording four assists in 25 Super Lig games.

Reporter drops update from Nottingham Forest on Gibbs-White

But while the Reds show interest in Kilicsoy, they will want him to arrive as an aid for Gibbs-White, not as a replacement. According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Nottingham Forest will “do everything they can” to keep hold of Gibbs-White in the summer.

As stated, the Forest captain has interest from big Premier League clubs, but the Reds are determined to keep hold of their best players after what has been a tremendous 2024/25 campaign. The report states that should Champions League qualification be achieved, the Midlands side would be well-placed to keep their best players for next season.

The 25-year-old has had a very impressive Premier League campaign, scoring five goals and registering seven assists in 25 league games. His form has earned him two caps for England, and while he wasn’t originally called into the squad for the next international games by Thomas Tuchel, he now finds himself in the squad after Cole Palmer pulled out through injury.

Nuno and Gibbs-White have known each other since the midfielder was 17, as he came through at Wolves. The pair find themselves working with one another once again, and Gibbs-White has labelled the relationship between the two of them as “incredible”. Therefore, Nuno will be determined to keep hold of his star midfielder beyond this summer.

Ipswich signed one of the best players in the EFL, now he belongs there

Unless a minor miracle occurs between now and the end of May, Ipswich Town are set for an immediate return back down to the Championship after a fleeting one-season adventure in the Premier League.

With nine games left to go in the top-flight campaign, the Suffolk strugglers find themselves nine points off 17th placed Wolverhampton Wanderers, with five defeats from their last six games in the tricky division making for some pretty grim reading.

Whilst the likes of Liam Delap and Leif Davis have proven that they’re Premier League capable for their lowly side, other figures in Kieran McKenna’s camp have struggled for the majority of the season with the gigantic step-up in quality.

The biggest losers from Ipswich's Premier League return

Ipswich would have been well aware from minute one of this campaign that it was going to be an almighty struggle to stay afloat in the top-flight, with the Premier League a different kettle of fish altogether from the Championship.

Still, the likes of Jack Clarke will perhaps be most disappointed with their output. A statement £20m buy from Sunderland, this was the young winger’s opportunity to prove himself at the highest level after having a rough time of it with Spurs in his previous experience of the top-flight.

Sadly, he’s been firing blanks all season long in front of goal, registering four assists in the Premier League and not finding the back of the net.

He’s not the only underperformer in the final third with Conor Chaplin and Sammie Szmodics scoring just six times between them in all competitions.

Moreover, other more senior faces such as Sam Morsy have also struggled centrally, with the 33-year-old notably reckless when gifting Fulham a penalty when the Tractor Boys picked up a draw away at Craven Cottage back in January.

Morsy has also consistently failed to be the brave warrior his team needs him to be to help out in defence, with Ipswich leaking a high 62 goals in league action subsequently.

Of course, the actual defenders aren’t blameless here, with one centre-back in particular failing to live up to the immense hype that surrounded him on his summer arrival.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Ipswich defender belongs in the Championship

The Tractor Boys’ summer transfer policy of poaching the cream of the crop from the second tier certainly had a lot of merit behind it, with pickups such as Championship golden boot winner Szmodics understandably exciting the Portman Road masses.

Likewise, adding in former Hull City titan Jacob Greaves to the ever-expanding group was seen as another statement of intent, with his form at the Tigers prior to the Ipswich switch seeing football writer Alex Osborn label him as “the best centre-back in the Championship.”

The towering 6 foot 1 defender would regularly put his body on the line when pulling on Hull black and orange, leading to Greaves tallying up a mightily impressive 11 clean sheets during the 2023-24 campaign in the Championship, with 7.3 duels won on average per second tier clash also standing out.

Everything was seemingly in place for Greaves to take to the Premier League like a duck to water, therefore, with the 24-year-old even reportedly eyed by Everton before a switch to Suffolk materialised.

But, much like many other faces in McKenna’s camp, Greaves has fallen victim to the pressures of the top-flight, with only two clean sheets picked up from 19 league appearances.

Unfortunately, the £15m buy has also had to wrestle with some injury concerns, with his first taste of Premier League football being a sobering one instead of Greaves going down as an instant success.

Yet, with his knowledge of the second tier clear for all to see, perhaps the former Hull defender just belongs in the second-tier after all. There’s no shame in that.
