Chelsea eyeing new forwards for Enzo Maresca before deadline day

Better than Gittens: Chelsea could sign "one of the best wingers" for £50m

Chelsea have been linked with numerous attackers in recent weeks, with another name also in the mix.

Chelsea are set to hold talks over Alejandro Garnacho this week, according to Telegraph journalist Matt Law, and it is believed they’re weighing up Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens or Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel as alternatives.

Garnacho is valued at around £50 million by Man United, so it won’t be an easy deal to pull off, and the Argentine is also attracting serious interest from Napoli.

Amidst their pursuit of a winger, there is also the matter of Chelsea’s search for a striker to complement Nicolas Jackson, which is made all the more imperative for Stamford Bridge officials by the Frenchman’s potential switch to Bayern Munich.

Chelsea have a number of high-profile striker targets on their agenda – including reported Arsenal targets in Wolves star Matheus Cunha and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko – after deciding to push forward their plans to bring in a new number nine for the winter rather than later this year (Simon Phillips).

Going back to their wide-attacking targets, reports in Spain have recently shed light on Chelsea bids for Deportivo La Coruna sensation Yeremay Hernandez.

The 22-year-old has bagged eight goals and three assists for Deportivo in the Spanish Segunda division this season, leading to serious interest from elite clubs, and Chelsea are among his admirers.

Chelsea have made offers to sign Hernandez already this month, which have all been rejected by Deportivo, and reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has lifted the lid on yet another approach.

Chelsea see £12.6 million bid for Yeremay Hernandez rejected by Deportivo

As per the respected journalist, Deportivo have rejected a new bid from Chelsea for Hernandez, this time coming in at around £12.6 million – around £4.4 million below his £17 million release clause.

Hernandez has been called an exciting and “flamboyant” wide player by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, an expert on world football’s youngest rising stars, but it appears he won’t be coming to west London this month.

Arsenal hold advantage over Barcelona in race for "amazing" £50m forward

Arsenal now hold an advantage over Barcelona in the race to sign an “amazing” £50m forward this month, according to a report.

Arsenal eyeing new forward

The Gunners are in need of additional attacking options, with both Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling currently sidelined, so Mikel Arteta will be looking to strengthen his side in the January transfer window.

Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku has been identified as a potential option for Arteta, and the forward is now believed to be keen on moving to the Emirates Stadium, although there will be competition for his signature from Paris Saint-Germain.

Matheus Cunha is another Premier League player on Arteta’s shortlist, having been potent in front of goal for Wolverhampton Wanderers so far this season, while Arsenal are also chasing RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that the Gunners were in pole position for Athletic Club’s Nico Williams for a potential January move, and there has now been a new update on their pursuit.

According to reports from Spain, Arsenal are determined to strengthen their attack this winter, meaning they have now set their sights on Williams, who is valued at around £50m by his current employers.

There will be competition for the Spaniard’s signature, with Barcelona also in the frame, but there is a feeling that Arteta’s side could hold an advantage over the La Liga club.

Arsenal make first approach in race to sign new 17 y/o gem for Arteta

He’s already impressed this season.

ByTom Cunningham Jan 1, 2025

The Gunners have an advantage over Barca in terms of money, and they can offer the 22-year-old the opportunity to be a part of an exciting project in the Premier League, which could be a decisive factor in his decision.

Exciting news for Arsenal

With Saka out injured, there could be no better player to come in on the right flank than Williams, considering just how impressive he has been for Athletic Club over the course of the past few seasons.

The Spain international chalked up a remarkable 14 assists in the previous campaign, and his versatility could also make him an attractive option for Arteta, given that he is clearly able to play on both wings, having done so regularly in La Liga.

Spain star Nico Williams

The BBC’s John Bennett was also full of praise for the attacker for his performances in Euro 2024, saying:

As such, it is exciting news that Arsenal could be well-placed to beat Barcelona to Williams’ signature this month.

The BCCI is set to resume the India A programme in early September, with incoming tours from New Zealand, and possibly, Australia. It will be helmed by VVS Laxman and his NCA support staff group of Sairaj Bahutule and Sitanshu Kotak.ESPNcricinfo has learnt that New Zealand A will arrive in India by the end of August for three four-day games and as many List A matches, with all of them likely to be held in Bengaluru. The BCCI is also contemplating the possibility of a pink-ball fixture during the series, but a final nod is awaited.New Zealand A played a pink-ball game on their previous tour to India in 2017-18. That game in Vijayawada, though, was a day fixture despite being played with the pink ball. And if the game in the upcoming series next month does go ahead, it will be played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The New Zealand A tour is expected to overlap with the Duleep Trophy, the zonal first-class competition, which will open India’s domestic calendar for the 2022-23 season. The six-team tournament will be played from September 8 to 25 in Chennai and Coimbatore. The home series against New Zealand will be India A’s first assignment since their tour to South Africa late last year, just prior to the national team’s three-Test series in December. The BCCI is also understood to be in negotiations with Cricket Australia for a tour towards the end of the year – most likely in November – prior to the start of the Ranji Trophy and India’s next Test assignment, which will be in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh tour, consisting of two Tests, will be India’s penultimate World Test Championship (WTC) assignment. They will culminate the current leg of the WTC with a four-Test series at home against Australia in February-March.

Grant Stewart's last-ball six wins it for Kent

Afghan refugees invited to share in Canterbury thriller

ECB Reporters Network19-Aug-2022Grant Stewart hit a last-ball six to give the Kent Spitfires a stunning three-wicket win over the Yorkshire Vikings, in a Royal London Cup thriller at Canterbury.Kent went into the final over needing 11 to keep their hopes of qualifying alive and Stewart declined a single off Matthew Revis’s penultimate ball to leave everything riding on the final delivery. The all-rounder then pulled Revis through backward square leg to a huge cheer from the Canterbury crowd, leaving Kent on 297 for seven.Yorkshire had posted 282 for six from 45 overs, Harry Duke top-scoring with 85, Will Fraine hitting 68 and debutant Finlay Bean 64. After century stands for the first two wickets, Joe Denly took three for 37 to rein Yorkshire in and a Duckworth-Lewis adjustment for a rain delay meant Kent were set a target of 297.Ben Compton hit 81 and Denly 61 but after reaching 189 for two, miserly Yorkshire bowling saw the run rate spiral above 12 an over until Stewart’s drastic late intervention.Related

Denly said: “They’re moments you dream of as a cricketer, hitting a six off the last ball to win a game for your team. Credit to Grant, he works very hard at his batting and especially his power game and moments like that make it all worthwhile. If there was one player I had to pick to hit a six off the last ball, I’d have Grant Stewart every day. He’s built for it, he’s pure muscle, I don’t think there’s an ounce of fat on him.”A crowd of over 2,000 at the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence was boosted by around 80 Afghan refugees and Kent even arranged for an interpreter to broadcast announcements in Pashto. The hosts needed to win to stand any chance of reaching the knock-out stages and with clouds hovering over Canterbury for the first time in what seemed like weeks, they chose to field, but struggled to make any impact early on.An elegant glance for two from Gilchrist took Fraine to 50, but the breakthrough finally came in the 22nd over when he was lbw to Hamid Qadri. It was an isolated success for Kent. Duke was on 64 when he was put down by Nathan Gilchrist off his own bowling and he put on 109 for the second wicket with Bean. However, just as it began to rain, Denly tilted the equation with two wickets in three deliveries. Bean drove him to Qadri and was caught. Then, with a hundred there for the taking, Duke skied Denly to Alex Blake. When the umpires brought the players off it was the first time there’d been a rain delay at Canterbury this year, but play resumed after an hour with the game reduced to 45 overs per side.Hill made only five before he was lbw to Denly and Jonathan Tattershall holed out to Stewart in the next over and was caught on the boundary by Nathan Gilchrist. The rain then returned, the umpires conferred and one of them signalled for the players to go back off, yet after a cry of “get on with it!” from the crowd and with the rain easing to a drizzle they changed their minds and stayed on. Matthew Revis duly drove Navdeep Saini to Denly and was caught for three, before Matthew Waite and Dom Bess restored some momentum with 31 and 13 not out respectively.Kent’s chase got off to the worst possible start when Joey Evison was out to the first ball of the innings, caught behind off Waite, but Robinson responded by racing past 50 with a six off Tom Loten that cleared the flats on the Old Dover Road side of the ground. Although he fell for 59 to the same bowler in his next over, caught by Revis at square leg, Compton and Denly put on 98 for the next wicket, their stand only ending when Denly miscued trying to pull Revis and was caught by Waite.Revis then had Alex Blake caught by Bess for three and Kent went 29 balls without a boundary as the pressure mounted. Compton was finally bowled by Waite attempting to reverse sweep and with Waite’s 37th over going for just four, the hosts needed 36 from 18 and then 23 from 12. Harry Finch was out for 42, pulling Bess to Waite but Stewart smashed Waite back over his head for six, leaving Kent needing 11 from the final over.Harry Podmore sliced Revis’ first ball for four but hit the next down George Hill’s throat. Qadri took a single from the third, the fourth was a dot and Stewart declined a single off the fifth before creaming Revis for six to an eruption of joy from the home fans.Yorkshire’s assistant coach Ali Maiden, who is leading Yorkshire in this tournament, said: “I just hope Rev doesn’t take that too personally and he can come back from the experience positively. The plan the lads had set was what he actually executed. The guy connects and it goes for six. It’s just one of those things.”

Inter Miami player ratings vs Chicago Fire: Lionel Messi hits woodwork twice on free-kicks in scoreless draw with Gregg Berhalter's side, Herons cede lead in East

Messi and Miami remain unbeaten, but were blanked for the first time this season to fall behind Vancouver in standings

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami were held to a draw for the second-straight MLS weekend, with the taking a point on the road in a scoreless draw with Gregg Berhalter's Chicago Fire Sunday night.

On Matchday 7, the South Beach club drew Toronto FC 1-1. Coupled with Sunday's draw, they've taken just two of a possible six in their last two matches – and as a result, fell out of first place in the Eastern Conference, trailing Supporters' Shield leaders Vancouver Whitecaps by four.

Messi continues to be a draw for MLS clubs, as Chicago set a home attendance record of more than 62,000 fans for the match at Soldier Field.

There were chances for both clubs to find a winner on the day, but stellar goalkeeping from Miami's Oscar Ustari and Chicago's Chris Brady ultimately kept the match at a stalemate through. For Miami, their best opportunities both came from set pieces, but Lionel Messi hit the woodwork not once, but twice from direct free-kick situations.

However, from the open of play, Miami struggled to get anything going. Luis Suarez thought he'd found a winner late, but the former Uruguay international was offside by a wide margin after finding the back of the net in the closing minutes.

Chicago, meanwhile, tested Miami's defense multiple times with the trio of Hugo Cuypers, Jonathan Bamba and Philip Zinckernagel all proving to be effective in creating opportunities. Ustari's heroics in net, which included seven saves, kept Miami in the match.

Miami, despite the draw, are still unbeaten to begin the MLS campaign – though Sunday was their first shutout this season. However, with consecutive draws, their early-season lead on the rest of the league has dwindled.

GOAL rates Inter Miami's players from Soldier Field.

Oscar Ustari (9/10):

Made a few really impressive saves, and was imposing in his box. A good performance from the veteran who helped maintain a point.

Noah Allen (7/10):

Replaced Jordi Alba in the XI and, while he did not drive forward as much, was incredibly solid.

Tomas Aviles (7/10):

Was rather solid centrally. Stayed composed, read the game well and was imposing on the ball.

Maxi Falcon (5/10):

Often drawn out of position, but recovered well in moments. He left Miami's defense vulnerable, though, and without Ustari – it could have been a different game.

Gonzalo Lujan (6/10):

Good showing on his flank when off the ball. Lacked a bit of forward influence, but Miami needed him defensively sound and he was just that.

Benjamin Cremaschi (5/10):

Not his best performance. Constantly struggled with the final pass, and he never asserted himself in the middle of the park physically.

Federico Redondo (6/10):

Fantastic next to Busquets defensively. However, he left a bit on the plate when going forward – never really managed to influence the game.

Sergio Busquets (7/10):

So calm and composed on the ball. Really controlled the tempo of the match well.

Getty Images SportAttack

Telasco Segovia (4/10):

Really poor in the attack. Was rather nonexistent throughout his 60 minutes on the pitch.

Luis Suarez (5/10):

Earned an early yellow card for an atrocious foul, launched a 1v1 effort over the net, but played some extraordinary passes and had exceptional hold-up play. Not a good performance, but he was influential.

Lionel Messi (6/10):

So clever on the ball around the box, but never managed an impact outside of set piece attempts or drawing the fouls that led to them. Hit the woodwork twice from direct free-kick opportunities.

Tadeo Allende (6/10):

Replaced Segovia, but never found himself in the attack.

Yannick Bright (7/10):

Composed in the midfield after coming on, and didn't allow Chicago much time on the ball. A good cameo.

Jordi Alba (6/10):

A rare substitute appearance, but after being brought into the match, had very little impact. Drove forward well, but never influenced the game.

Javier Mascherano (5/10):

Had no real answers in the attack. His midfield was incredibly composed, but Miami could never get over the line in the final-third. At some point, he'll have to try something other than Suarez at the 9, as he was a liability at times throughout the match. He might want to focus less on his matchday outfit and more on finding three points going forward.

Southampton now lining up late bid to sign new £390k-p/y forward for Juric

Southampton are now pushing to sign a new forward before the transfer window closes, and have identified an EFL star as their main focus as they look to bolster their ranks.

Southampton improving under Juric

Since the sacking of Russell Martin and subsequent arrival of Ivan Juric, Southampton have undoubtedly improved, but have failed to pick up the results to show for it. The Saints remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League with just one win to their name all season, and have picked up just six points, none of those under their new manager.

However, there have been signs of progress, with the south coast side having been by far the better side against Manchester United only to be stung by a late hat-trick from Amad Diallo to leave Old Trafford with nothing.

They continue to struggle at both ends of the pitch, scoring the fewest goals in the Premier League this campaign while also conceding the second most, a combination that is only likely to end one way for the St Mary’s side.

With the club now likely resigned to spending next season in the Championship, they have seen strong interest in star man Tyler Dibling this winter, and are likely to lose the talented forward in the not-so-distant future amid interest from Tottenham and others.

Now, perhaps in preparation for that fact, they are looking to raid the Championship once more ahead of their potential return to England’s second tier.

Southampton lining up move for Cardiff City star

That comes as Football Insider reveal that Southampton are one of four sides chasing a late move to sign Cardiff City forward Ollie Tanner this month.

Tanner has impressed in England’s second tier so far this season, grabbing two goals and two assists, while his versatility has seen him play on both sides of attack.

He has always been talented, with one former coach dubbing him “special” and “the best I ever worked with”, something that tempted Tottenham into making an offer to sign him, only for Cardiff to beat them to the punch.

And his performances this season have reportedly caught the eye, with Leeds United, Burnley, Southampton and Leicester all on his tail as they plot a late move for the 22-year-old.

Southampton must sell a flop who earns more than Walker-Peters & Fernandes

When quizzed, Cardiff boss Omer Riza played down the links, explaining: “No. Ollie’s a young lad, he’s one of ours and he’s doing really well. We need him, like we need all the other players in our team, and he’s doing well. He’s focused on doing his job at Cardiff and that’s it, really.”

And with two and a half years left to run on his £7,500 a week deal in Wales, any deal looks difficult at this late stage, with Cardiff also looking to stave off relegation themselves. However, several clubs are willing to try, and Southampton appear to be among them.

Just days after the Lionesses' match, England’s men’s team, led by Thomas Tuchel, will feature at the same venue as the Three Lions will face Andorra in a key qualifier for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on June 7.

Originally slated to be held in Andorra, UEFA has opted to relocate the game to RCDE Stadium due to logistical and venue considerations. This marks Tuchel’s first away game since taking the reins, having started his tenure with two convincing home victories against Latvia and Albania last month.
