Sangha keeps NSW in hunt for Shield final

NSW’s hopes of reaching the Sheffield Shield final remain alive, thanks to a crucial unbeaten century from new captain Jason Sangha against South Australia.

Jason Sangha marked his first-class captaincy debut with an unbeaten century against South Australia in Adelaide to keep NSW’s Sheffield Shield final hopes intact.Needing a win to have any chance of featuring in next week’s final, a patched-up NSW side ended day one at 6-243 after being sent in to bat on a challenging Karen Rolton Oval pitch. The injury-hit Blues needed to make four changes among their top-six, but 22-year-old Sangha stepped up to the task to complete his century just before stumps.Sangha held the innings together – just as he did last week in a match-saving knock against Western Australia – to finish the day on 104.Sangha struck 12 boundaries and faced 191 balls in four-and-a-half hours at the crease.NSW went into the crucial final round contest without three captaincy options in Moises Henriques, Daniel Hughes and incumbent skipper Kurtis Patterson.Henriques suffered a calf injury in last week’s draw with Western Australia, Hughes has a broken thumb, while Patterson remained in Sydney with his wife for the birth of their first child. In addition, allrounder Hayden Kerr (hamstring) and wicketkeeper Peter Nevill (shoulder) were also ruled unavailable for the Blues.South Australia were notably without Australian representatives Travis Head and Alex Carey. The absentees allowed the day to be marked by strong debut performances with both bat and ball.NSW opener Blake Nikitaras was the second-best contributor for the Blues, batting through the first session for 44, including a remarkable pulled six over mid-wicket.Meanwhile, Jordan Buckingham, one of three new faces for the Redbacks along with Bailey Capel and Thomas Kelly, was the best with the ball for the home side, returning 3-59. Among his victims were Matthew Gilkes (41) and hard-hitting allrounder Jack Edwards (5).South Australia are the only state without a chance of playing in the March 31 Shield final.

Clement can sell Dessers by unleashing Rangers teen who just won a trophy

Glasgow Rangers missed out on the chance to win the first domestic trophy of the season when they lost on penalties to Celtic at Hampden Park in the League Cup final on Sunday.

Ridvan Yilmaz was the only player to miss from the spot, despite goalkeeper Jack Butland also taking one of their penalties, whilst centre-forward Cyriel Dessers came off the bench and did not take one of the five spot-kicks.

The Rangers number nine was either not trusted by Philippe Clement or did not back himself to be one of the main takers, which is concerning either way you look at it.

Dessers has been linked with a move away from Ibrox ahead of the upcoming January transfer window and his failure to step up when his team needed him is one of the reasons why the manager should bin him from the squad.

Why Rangers should sell Cyriel Dessers

French outlet Le Republicain Sportif recently reported that Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne are interested in a swoop to sign the Nigeria international next month, with a fee of around £3.5m needed to make a deal happen.

Clement and the club must take advantage of this interest from the French team and ruthlessly cash in on the former Cremonese man, who has been an unreliable performer for the Ibrox giants.

As you can see in the table above, Dessers has missed a whopping 33 ‘big chances’ in the Scottish Premiership since the start of last season, which illustrates how wasteful he is in front of goal.

Cyriel Dessers

That is further illustrated by his return of one goal from 3.98 xG across six outings in the Europa League so far this term, and Clement could finally bin him by unleashing a B team player as his replacement in the first-team.

Why Zak Lovelace should be unleashed

Zak Lovelace could come up from the academy to take Dessers’ place in the side and allow the club to cash in on the Nigerian flop, as he has shown plenty of promise at youth level.

As you can see in the clip above, the English marksman scored the winning goal in the Glasgow Cup final against Celtic for the B team on Tuesday night, with a composed finish late on in the match.

The 18-year-old gem, who came off the bench against FCSB in the Europa League this season, has made five first-team appearances for the club to date, but is yet to establish himself as a regular in the senior set-up.

Rangers forward Zak Lovelace.

Lovelace, who missed 320 days with a hamstring injury between October 2023 and September 2024, has had his development hampered by injury issues, but he is now back and firing for the B team – winning them a trophy a couple of days after Dessers failed to help his team to win one.

The teenage sensation, who was once hailed as “exciting” by ex-sporting director Ross Wilson, has produced 17 goals and seven assists in 34 appearances for the B team in total, as well as two goals and four assists in six matches in the UEFA Youth League.

At the age of 18, Lovelace still has plenty of time left to develop and improve, and he could benefit from being the third-choice striker behind Danilo and Hamza Igamane, with Dessers being sold to facilitate that step up for the youngster.

Kings, Knight Riders face off in battle of power-hitters

Big picture

A new-look Punjab Kings side, dripping with power and depth, hunted down 206 against Royal Challengers Bangalore to kick off their season in grand style. They now run into Kolkata Knight Riders, who play with similar attacking intent and freedom. The result didn’t go in Knight Riders’ way on Wednesday, but they stayed true to their playbook, hitting more boundaries than Royal Challengers.

Live in the USA

If you’re in the USA, you can watch the match live in English and in Hindi on ESPN+

An intriguing subplot to look forward to on Friday is Andre Russell, if he’s fit enough, vs Odean Smith. Russell is still the gold standard of T20 cricket while Smith is the latest big-hitting allrounder from the Caribbean. Smith has modelled his game on Russell and he recently won the T10 league with his idol at Deccan Gladiators in Abu Dhabi. In the last IPL, Smith even worked with Russell as a net bowler at Knight Riders. IPL 2022, however, has pitted them against each other.

In the news

After Wednesday’s game, where Russell bowled only three overs, Knight Riders head coach Brendon McCullum said that the allrounder’s shoulder was sore after he dived near the boundary. If Russell doesn’t recover in time, Knight Riders could instead call up Mohammad Nabi or Chamika Karunaratne.South Africa quick Kagiso Rabada is out of quarantine and trained with the Kings after having participated in the ODI series at home against Bangladesh. Jonny Bairstow, however, is unavailable for Kings’ second game as he is yet to complete quarantine upon arrival from the Caribbean.

Likely XIs

Kolkata Knight Riders: 1 Venkatesh Iyer, 2 Ajinkya Rahane, 3 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 4 Nitish Rana, 5 Sam Billings, 6 Sheldon Jackson (wk), 7 Andre Russell/Chamika Karunaratne/Mohammad Nabi, 8 Sunil Narine, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Umesh Yadav, 11 Varun ChakravarthyPunjab Kings: 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Mayank Agarwal (capt), 3 Bhanuka Rajapaksa (wk), 4 Liam Livingstone, 5 Raj Bawa, 6 M Shahrukh Khan, 7 Odean Smith, 8 Harpreet Brar, 9 Arshdeep Singh, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Rahul Chahar

Strategy punt

Smith missed his lengths at the death on IPL debut, but there is a case for Kings to give him another go during this phase and hold him back for Russell. Smith has bowled 13 balls to Russell in T20 cricket, keeping him to a mere eight runs while getting him out twice in three innings.

Stats that matter

  • Russell has the wood over Rabada in T20s, taking him for 79 runs off 39 balls at a strike rate of over 200 while being dismissed just once.
  • Umesh Yadav has 49 wickets in the powerplay in the IPL at an economy rate of 7.60. Only Bhuvneshwar Kumar (51), Sandeep Sharma (52) and Zaheer Khan (52) have picked up more wickets than Umesh in the first six overs.
  • Sunil Narine has a particularly strong record against Kings, having picked up 31 wickets in 21 games at an average of 18.22 and economy rate of seven.
  • Harpreet Brar was expensive in Kings’ opening game, but he could still be a decent option against Knight Riders’ right-hander heavy batting line-up. The left-arm fingerspinner’s economy rate of 6.04 in IPL 2021 was the best among bowlers who had bowled more than ten overs last season.

Glasner could destroy Mitoma by unleashing amazing Crystal Palace duo

Crystal Palace have experienced a slight turnaround in form, now unbeaten in their last four Premier League games, which has seen the Eagles rise from the relegation zone.

In those four games, Oliver Glasner’s side have drawn three times, including against last season’s champions, Manchester City. Their one victory came against Ipswich, winning 1-0 with a goal from Jean-Philippe Mateta securing all three points.

The Eagles’ next game is against Brighton at the Amex Stadium, and Glasner will need to prepare his side in order to stop the high-flying Seagulls, who are currently seventh in the Premier League.

In order to stop Brighton, Glasner will have to ensure his defensive scheme is correct, and luckily for him, he has the perfect right-side combination to deal with Kaoru Mitoma.

Why Crystal Palace need to stop Kaoru Mitoma

Mitoma has made 16 appearances for Brighton this season, scoring three goals and providing two assists.

The 27-year-old is averaging 5.39 progressive carries and 3.40 progressive passes. He is also averaging 1.49 key passes per 90, and 1.35 passes into the penalty area, being a primary creator for the Seagulls.

Therefore, stopping their main hub of creation would go a long way for Palace in stunting Brighton, and this is the right side of defence Glasner must deploy in order to do that.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Crystal Palace's right-side combination

In recent weeks, Trevoh Chalobah, who is on loan from Chelsea this season, has been playing as the right-sided central defender in a back three.

The 25-year-old defender has made ten appearances for the Eagles since joining, scoring one goal, and contributing to two clean sheets in 883 minutes played.

Supporting him on the right is Daniel Munoz, who has been in excellent form as the right wingback, scoring two goals in his last three games, and showing his defensive qualities, making 11 tackles in the game against Newcastle.

Chalobah has provided the team with an element of recovery pace, alongside new signing Maxence Lacroix and captain, Marc Guehi. Allowing Chalobah to be aggressive by jumping out of the back three, he can make interceptions, win his duels and launch counterattacks with his progressive passing.

Munoz makes 3.79 tackles per 90, whilst also getting forward and providing the width for Palace, scoring 0.12 per 90, assisting 0.12 per 90, and taking 1.01 shots per 90 minutes. His ability and industry to get up and down the pitch, doubling up with Chalobah in defensive situations down his side, and then having the energy to burst forward and overlap in attacking areas, when possession is regained.

Chalobah

If Palace choose to deploy this right side that has handled the likes of Anthony Gordon, Morgan Rogers and Matheus Nunes in recent weeks, there is nothing to say they cannot deal with the threat of Mitoma, and help the Eagles to another big result.

"Strong" Sheff Wed ace now has return date set after missing 7 games

Heading into the weekend as many as six points clear of the Championship relegation zone, Sheffield Wednesday have been handed an added boost by the updated return date of a summer signing who’s missed the last seven games.

Sheffield Wednesday injury news

The Owls avoided Championship relegation by just three points last season, but already look on course to make a much-needed improvement this time around under Danny Rohl. The Wednesday boss has continued to impress at Hillsborough, taking his side to a comfortable 2-0 victory against relegation rivals Hull City last time out.

With Derby County now awaiting this Sunday, the Owls have the chance to extend their recent run to three games without defeat as the Championship heads into what is always an action-packed festive period of fixtures.

As so many games begin to come thick and fast, any positive news on the injury front will be seen as a major boost, with Wednesday’s squad likely to be stretched to full capacity over the coming weeks.

With that said, Rohl has already provided a positive injury update ahead of December, stating in a recent press conference that Olaf Kobacki is now on course to make his return against Stoke City in the Owls’ last game before Christmas on 21st December.

The winger has already missed seven games, and whilst that number is set to rise to 11 before he potentially returns, he will at least have the chance to hand those at Hillsborough an early Christmas present.

Rohl updated reporters, saying (as relayed by Sheffield Wednesday News): “Olaf has a strong attitude. This is what you can expect from such a player. He can play with resilience and go through and work hard. And he worked hard. He’s now on the pitch, and I think in the next two weeks, he will be back in the team training.”

"Strong" Kobacki can make up for disappointing start

Since arriving in the summer transfer window from Polish side Arka Gdynia, Kobacki has struggled to adjust to life in the Championship, with an ill-timed injury against Portsmouth far from helping.

Featuring in 10 games in all competitions – starting just four times in league action – Kobacki is yet to score or assist for the Owls. However, when he returns from injury, he should get the chance to put that right.

Though it must be said it won’t be easy to break into Rohl’s side ahead of the likes of Djeidi Gassama. Sheffield Wednesday are currently steering clear of the drop zone and impressing. For Rohl to even consider disrupting his strongest side, he must be convinced, and the numbers suggest that Kobacki is yet to steal the spotlight in England’s second tier.

Someone with a “strong attitude” according to Rohl, the 23-year-old will certainly attempt to fight for his place, and perhaps finally discover his best form at Sheffield Wednesday in doing so. There’s no doubt that another player firing on all cylinders would act as a welcomed boost in the middle of an action-packed period for the Owls.

Newcastle now monitoring "sublime" £20m Premier League youngster

Newcastle United are now monitoring a “sublime” Premier League player who has an affordable asking price, according to a report.

Newcastle transfer news

Although they are significantly hampered by the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, Newcastle are still looking at ways in which they can improve their squad in January and beyond.

Amid the uncertainty around Alexander Isak’s future, Newcastle have been linked with a move for Corinthians striker Yuri Alberto, who could be available for the relatively low fee of £17m this winter.

However, The Athletic reporter Chris Waugh believes that Eddie Howe will be more keen to strengthen in a different area of the pitch, saying: “As things stand, right-wing is very much the priority position, ahead of center-back,” Waugh reported. “Right-sided attack is the area they feel can be most improved upon.”

The Magpies are believed to have identified a number of targets that fit the bill, with Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo at the top of the list, although West Ham United winger Mohammed Kudus could also be considered.

Newcastle scouting Southampton gem

Mbeumo and Kudus aren’t the only Premier League players Howe has in mind, however, as Caught Offside report Newcastle have sent scouts to monitor Southampton’s Tyler Dibling this season.

Dibling is in high demand across the Premier League, with the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Aston Villa also being named as potential suitors, so there is likely to be stiff competition for his signature.

There has been a growing interest in the 18-year-old since his performance in the Saints’ loss against Liverpool last month, but his current employers are adamant they don’t want to sell him.

While they are likely to resist any interest in the winger, Southampton are said to have set an affordable asking price of around €25m (£20m), which shouldn’t be too prohibitive, at least for the Premier League’s top clubs.

Newcastle leading the race to sign £16.5m gem with a "magical" left foot

The Magpies are in pole position.

1 ByHenry Jackson Dec 9, 2024

It is exciting news that Newcastle are interested in the Southampton ace, given how highly he is rated, with journalist Jacob Tanswell describing him as “sublime” earlier in the campaign. Current manager Russell Martin also sang the starlet’s praises after his performance against Brighton & Hove Albion at the end of last month.

Although the Exeter-born winger is less proven than the likes of Mbeumo and Kudus, he is likely to be a far more affordable option, which may be necessary for Newcastle, given their financial challenges.

As such, Howe should continue to monitor Dibling ahead of the January transfer window to see how he progresses.

His Test match skills have made him unplayable in the first three games in the IPL having taken eight scalps. His bag of four included the wicket of Marcus Stoinis who fell for 24 off 15 in the chase and copped a fine of 20% of his match fee for an IPL Code of Conduct breach following his dismissal.Stoinis fell for a duck in his most recent match against Mumbai Indians holing out off another Australian in Daniel Sams. The left-arm seamer took 1 for 40 against Super Giants following on from an excellent showing against Chennai Super Kings where he took 4 for 30 in a losing side. Riley Meredith also bowled well for Mumbai against Super Kings taking 1 for 25 off 4 overs in his first game of the season, but like Sams, he was expensive against Super Giants conceding 40 off his four overs but did pick up two wickets.David Warner made his third half-century in a row smashing 60 not out off 30 balls to help Delhi Capitals mow down Punjab Kings’ paltry target of 115 inside 11 overs.
