Emery must ditch Aston Villa man after 4/10 display vs Crystal Palace

Aston Villa’s 5-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on the final day of the Premier League season shouldn’t detract from just how good a campaign they have enjoyed.

A run to the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League gave Unai Emery a chance to end a near three-decade wait for a major trophy, but it was their fourth-place finish in the top flight that turned plenty of heads.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery during a Premier League game.

Qualifying for the land of milk and honey should give the Spaniard plenty of incentive to strengthen his squad for the challenges that lie ahead next term.

He will have to move on a few players too, however, as there are a few in the squad who aren’t good enough to make the step up. Calum Chambers is one of the names that should be sold this summer.

The defender made his first Premier League start of the season against the Eagles on Sunday as Emery deployed him in an unfamiliar role at the heart of the midfield alongside Douglas Luiz.

Chambers had played a total of 258 minutes during the entire campaign prior to the game, and his rustiness was evident in his 68 minutes on the pitch.

He did seem keen to get involved, taking 56 touches while completing 45 of his 49 passes, yet the Englishman won just 50% of his ground duels along with losing possession five times and committing two fouls against Palace.

John Townley of the Birmingham Mail gave the player a match rating of just 4/10 for his lacklustre display, while claiming that it might have been ‘Chambers’ final appearance for Villa’ as the summer transfer window is fast approaching.

What the future holds for Calum Chambers

West Bromwich Albion were reportedly showing interest in Chambers during the January transfer window, yet no move ever materialised, and he remained at Villa Park until the end of the season at least.

If interest from the Championship continues into this summer, there is no doubt Emery will be cashing in on the defender, especially if he aims to bolster his squad.

Chambers has made only eight appearances for the Midlands side this season, including just five in the Premier League, and it appears he won't be in the Spaniard’s future plans for 2024/25,

Playing in the Champions League will force Emery into being smart regarding his transfer business, recruiting wisely without overspending.

This could see several of the first team leave during the summer and Chambers will be one of the first names to depart.

calum-chambers-arsenal-transfer-aston-villa

He is currently taking home £50k-per-week, money which could be utilised in other areas, no doubt about that.

The former Arsenal man has one year remaining on his contract, which indicates that this summer is the last real chance for Emery to secure a decent transfer fee for him.

It may not be much, but every penny will count in what could be Villa’s most important summer for years.

England victory chances hit after Old Trafford washout

Play was abandoned without a ball being bowled on the third day in Manchester

The Report by Valkerie Baynes18-Jul-2020

England need to take 19 wickets in two days if they are to keep their series alive against West Indies after the third day of the second Test at Emirates Old Trafford was a washout. With finer weather forecast for Manchester on Sunday and Monday and a fresh seam attack, England’s prospects are “not ideal”, to use Ben Stokes’ words, but they are not completely dire. Failure to force victory in the coming days, however, will mean West Indies retain the Wisden Trophy that they won in the Caribbean 18 months ago.”It’s looking like we’ve got to take 19 wickets in two days,” Stokes told Sky Sports. “But the wicket has offered something throughout the whole Test so far, so we just need to make sure that we can expose that and put as many deliveries as we can, challenging their defensive shots as much as we can.”ALSO READ: Archer cleared to play in third Test after fine and written warningStuart Broad is back in the team and likely to be hungry after his consternation at being overlooked for the first Test in Southampton, which West Indies won by four wickets. He is joined by Sam Curran, who made an early breakthrough when he had opener John Campbell out lbw late on Friday to put the tourists one wicket down still trailing by 437 runs.Chris Woakes is the other addition after England opted to rest Mark Wood and James Anderson following their efforts in the first Test and Jofra Archer was omitted on the first morning of this match for his unauthorised trip home en route to Manchester.Archer will be available for selection for the third Test, also at Old Trafford, after a disciplinary panel fined him £15,000 and gave him a written warning for his indiscretion. In the meantime, it will fall to Broad, Curran, Woakes and Stokes to get the job done for England, not to mention Dom Bess, who will have watched with interest as fellow offspinner Roston Chase claimed a five-wicket haul in the first innings after finding good spin and bounce.”It’s not only offering for the seam bowlers,” Stokes said. “We’ve got the options there that we feel we can bowl West Indies out twice if we have to.”It was Stokes’ performance with the bat that went a long way towards putting England in a commanding position at the end of the second day, his 176 combined with Dom Sibley’s 120 meant the hosts posted a first-innings 469 for 9 declared. Had England not lost the first Test, for the eighth time in ten series, their task over the next two days may not have been quite so pressurised.”If we use the first two days as a benchmark for how we want to bat then, then the better we’re going to become,” Stokes said. “We are a very good team at bouncing back from defeats and we’ve proven that.”If we can keep producing days and games like we generally do after a first Test then we’ll start coming closer to being the No. 1 team, which is obviously a goal of ours.”We’re in a great place as a side. We’ve got the right personnel, the right team, the right people helping the players out right now. And I think in two or three years’ time, all the tough times that we’ve experienced – in South Africa and this first game against West Indies – is a great learning curve, not just for the younger guys in the team at the moment but also for the more experienced guys.”If you are always learning from mistakes, it’s going to make you a better player as an individual, but also a better team.”

Tottenham planning £40 million swap deal bid including Emerson Royal

Tottenham are planning a part-exchange bid worth a total of £40 million, including the value of Emerson Royal, as Ange Postecoglou's side set their sights on signing a "strong" player.

Spurs looking to seal new midfielder deal this summer

Widespread reports have suggested that Spurs are looking to bring in a new midfield number six this summer, and one who could add more dynamism in the middle of the park.

Paratici tells Levy to sign £50 million star with Tottenham man set for axe

The Italian still has a real influence at N17.

ByEmilio Galantini May 24, 2024

Tottenham are ready to fund multiple key signings for Postecoglou, which includes a new man in the engine room (Tom Allnutt), as uncertainty surrounds the futures of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Giovani Lo Celso and even Yves Bissouma.

Hojbjerg is looking very likely to quit Spurs after a 2023/2024 season with limited opportunities in Postecoglou's starting eleven, and his contract is set to expire in 2025. The Dane could leave for nothing next year, so it is wide for chairman Daniel Levy to listen to offers for Hojbjerg as we approach the transfer window's opening.

“I think Hojbjerg is almost certain to leave Tottenham in the summer," said journalist Paul Brown to GiveMeSport.

"He's been available for the right price in the last two windows. He is willing to move on if a new challenge arises. He is not the first choice in his position, and at this stage of his career, I think he wants to be playing somewhere where he can start week-to-week.

“Three or four massive clubs have been sniffing around him for the last few months, and I think he would jump at the chance to join. None of them were willing to do a permanent deal for the kind of money that Spurs wanted. They were looking at loans primarily, which is not of interest to Tottenham. But I think in the summer that might change. His price will drop slightly because his contract has less time to run, and I think he will likely leave.”

Lo Celso has hardly been picked by Postecoglou either, making him a sure-fire candidate for the exit door, while it is believed that Tottenham could even consider selling Bissouma if a suitable offer comes in.

If one or two of the aforementioned depart, which is possible, then Postecoglou will require a suitable replacement. Tottenham remain linked with Chelsea star Conor Gallagher and Atalanta midfielder Ederson as two options, but new names appear on a consistent basis as well.

Tottenham planning part-exchange bid for Davide Frattesi

According to Inter Live, it is believed Sassuolo midfielder Davide Frattesi, currently on loan at Inter Milan, is now a target.

davide-frattesi-newcastle-transfer-news-premier-league

Tottenham could launch a part-exchange bid for Frattesi in the next few weeks, including exit-bound defender Emerson, for an operation totaling around £40 million including the Brazilian's value.

This could hand Spurs an advantage over fellow interested sides, and he'd be worth a punt after his excellent campaign at Inter. Frattesi has also been called a "strong" player by Italy teammate Nicolo Barella.

Edwards could land "prolific" Nunez replacement who terrorised Liverpool

What to do with a problem like Darwin Nunez? The Liverpool striker has evoked every emotion available to the Reds fanbase, wowing and winding up with equal measure as he catches the eye and misses the net.

The Uruguay international is a singular player, capable of sending a frisson of excitement and a frisson of fear through his own support with equal measure, blessed with influential prancing in the danger area and afflicted by inexcusable profligacy in front of goal.

The transfer window is around the corner, looming like a rumbling storm over yonder, and while Arne Slot will arrive at Anfield to head a new era at Liverpool, there is going to be plenty of change, players coming and going as Jurgen Klopp ends his Premier League tenure.

Darwin Nunez against Atalanta

Will Nunez be a part of this revamp? His long-term future is a point of discussion and FSG's CEO of Football, Michael Edwards, will have headed such talks at the transfer table.

Liverpool's summer transfer plans

According to mounting reports from Spanish sources, Nunez is firmly on the radar of Barcelona as Xavi's side search for Robert Lewandowski's successor, one of the finest goalscorers of his generation but entering his 36th year with the 2024/25 season.

Nunez signed for Liverpool for a club-record fee rising to £85m back in 2022 but has only scored 33 goals from 94 matches and has been rebuked in recent weeks for his part in Liverpool's late-season slump, ebbing from form and blanking across six successive top-flight matches.

The 24-year-old has fuelled the growing situation of his role in Slot's squad by deleting LFC-related imagery from his social media accounts, and it's no wonder that Liverpool appear to be searching for a new centre-forward.

One of the latest names to emerge belongs to Mohamed Amoura, who plays in Belgium for Union Saint-Gilloise and, according to a prior report from L'Equipe, has already been contacted by Liverpool bosses.

Amoura has a price tag of €20m (£17m) and would be a bit of a risk – but then Edwards and Liverpool often opt for the less-trodden path and could score a blinder with this one.

Darwin Nunez's season in numbers

Admittedly, Nunez has made gains during his second campaign at Liverpool, posting 18 goals and supplying 13 assists in all competitions, winning the Carabao Cup and playing a key part in the resurgence from the drab 2022/23 campaign.

If some of the more spiteful social media discourse is to be believed, Nunez is posturing as a Prem-level striker, but this is not the case. Nunez has his flaws but he has many strengths and has demonstrated improvement after his first campaign in England.

The £140k-per-week star has been far more effective creatively but he's still left plenty to be desired with his finishing, ranking among the top 18% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals but also ranking among the top 1% for shots taken per 90, as per FBref.

This metric corroborates his wastefulness, especially when collating that with data that shows a return of 20 goals across two Premier League campaigns that have also seen a staggering 47 big chances missed.

Darwin Nunez and Jurgen Klopp

If Barcelona present Liverpool with an attractive financial package it would be difficult to say no. Especially with fellow forwards Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo eager to cement starting berths under Slot and Amoura on the radar.

How Mohamed Amoura could fit in at Liverpool

Amoura has been hailed for his "incredibly prolific" first season in Belgium by talent scout Jacek Kulig and indeed has set the foundation for a prosperous career.

Across all competitions, the Algeria international has scored 23 goals and supplied seven assists, notably scoring and assisting as USG defeated Liverpool 2-1 in their final Europa League group-stage match.

Some performance. Amoura proved he can throw down with the best as his talismanic performance sank Liverpool and ensured his side cemented a third-place finish and advanced to the Europa Conference League knockout rounds.

What's more, he has scored 18 goals from 22 league matches this season while missing only three big chances – that is an extraordinary level of precision in striking moments.

The Algerian striker ranks among the top 1% of positional peers across divisions similar to the Jupiler Pro League for goals scored per 90, as per FBref – sure, that's wonderful stuff.

Mohamed Amoura in action for Union SG.

But he also ranks among the top 10% for assists, the top 7% for shot-creating actions, the top 1% for progressive carries, the top 4% for successful take-ons and the top 11% for tackles per 90.

He does the fundamentals perfectly, plies his trade with the clarity and composure of a natural-born star. Amoura is yet to try his hand in one of Europe's top-five leagues but there's a sense that he would be an excellent replacement for Nunez, offering similar snap and spark in his all-round play but, more importantly, offering a clinical touch that has evaded the Uruguayan.

But what of Nunez's stunning goalscoring season with Benfica, before joining Liverpool, you cry. True enough, the South American star scored 24 goals from 28 starts in Liga Portugal in 2021/22, but he still missed 14 big chances in less testing circumstances.

The rigours of the Premier League have struck many promising players down, but Amoura has an inborn goalscoring talent and he has the all-encompassing, dynamic skill set to complement.

He's not the household name that some might expect if Liverpool are to replace Nunez this summer, but trust in Edwards, trust in Liverpool's transfer diligence.

Four consecutive Tottenham defeats in the top flight have gifted Unai Emery's Aston Villa the advantage in pursuit of fourth, who now sit seven points above the north Londoners, even if Postecoglou boasts one game in hand and could narrow that gap to four.

Barring a late capitulation from Villa and unlikely fight back from Spurs, it seems all but confirmed that the latter will be playing Europa League football next season, but that is still a real step up from their disastrous 2022/2023 under Antonio Conte and a succession of interim head coaches.

Tottenham's last five Premier League results

Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham

Tottenham 2-3 Arsenal

Newcastle 4-0 Tottenham

Tottenham 3-1 Nottingham Forest

Postecoglou, speaking to the press, highlighted recently that real change is needed at N17, and it will take more time to build his long-term project.

"We need change. Change has to happen," said Postecoglou on what the Spurs squad could look like next season. "You can’t want to alter your course and expect the same people are going to be on that. It’s just not going to happen. We’ve had two windows and we’ve had some development of players, for sure, but when I say we’ve still got a long way to go, that’s what I’m talking about."

A few key decisions are set to be made when the transfer window reopens, on both incomings and outgoings. One of the big talking points will be how to proceed with loanee Timo Werner. The German, who joined from RB Leipzig on loan in January, could be snapped up on a permanent deal – with Spurs possessing the option to make his move indefinite.

Werner has impressed Tottenham staff with his application behind-the-scenes, but there are concerns over the "lightning quick" ace's often wasteful finishing in front of goal.

Sky Sports presenter thinks Tottenham will seal Werner deal

Regardless, speaking to Tottenham News, Sky Sports presenter Dan Bardell has tipped Spurs to seal a permanent deal for Werner this summer – who will cost them around £14 million.

“I think for that price, they’ll probably action it. I can’t see why they wouldn’t. I think they need a centre forward in the summer," said Bardell.

“Werner just gives them that multifunctional player who is so important in the modern-day Premier League. He can play left, he can play up front and as a second striker. I’d be really surprised if they didn’t action that.

“He’s had good and bad games. He’s missed chances and he’s scored a couple but he’s always involved in games.

“Spurs can pen teams further forward because he does provide that pace on the break. For £14 million, I would think that it’s actionable.”

Fabrizio Romano says yet another £35 million player could now leave Arsenal

Reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano says yet another player could now leave Arsenal this summer, alongside the usual suspects who've already been linked with departures.

Arsenal ready summer overhaul of fringe players

As Mikel Arteta and Edu continue to consider ways to evolve the current squad, reports suggest that a few players could be sacrificed to bolster the club's transfer kitty.

£120,000-per-week star is Mikel Arteta's dream signing for Arsenal

The Gunners boss is a “massive, massive fan”.

ByEmilio Galantini May 26, 2024

It is believed Arsenal want a new midfielder, with expensive Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes among their transfer targets. To fund what would be a marquee move for the Brazilian, some outlets have claimed that Arsenal are ready to sell Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson and Emile Smith Rowe.

As well as the aforementioned, uncertainty continues to surround the likes of Aaron Ramsdale, Thomas Partey and Gabriel Jesus. The latter's role in Arteta's first team somewhat diminished over 23/24, thanks partly to the stellar form of Kai Havertz in a makeshift forward role.

Partey, meanwhile, played far more of a bit-part role in comparison to previous seasons – making just 14 Premier League appearances last season. This was largely down to injury problems, with the African also forced to miss this year's AFCON with Ghana.

Both Jesus and Partey are attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, so there could be a good opportunity for Edu to make some money back off the duo who cost a combined £90 million to bring to the Emirates Stadium. They also reportedly earn a combined £465,000-per-week at Hale End, which is a sizeable chunk of Arsenal's wage bill.

Renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, speaking to JD Football last week, also confirmed that Partey will be leaving Arsenal this summer.

“There are several players in the list," said Romano on Arsenal signing a new midfielder.

"One player they’ve always appreciated is Douglas Luiz, but negotiating with Villa is never easy. They have several players lined up. There is a good chance they will bring in a new midfielder, Thomas [Partey] will leave, Jorginho has extended."

Fabio Vieira could also leave Arsenal this summer

Now, as per Romano again, another midfielder who could find himself on the Arsenal chopping block is Fabio Vieira. The Portuguese playmaker, who cost around £35 million to sign from FC Porto in the summer of 2022, has failed to live up to his previous hype.

Indeed, Romano says Vieira could leave Arsenal this summer in the event of a suitable offer.

“It’s also been reported that Fabio Vieira could leave Arsenal after a lack of playing time. My understanding, however, is that it depends on proposals,” Romano said.

“So far it’s quiet but for players like Vieira (not all of them) there’s a chance to leave in case of a good proposal coming in. We just have to be patient on that one.”

Southgate could drop England star for the Euros after 4/10 display

Well, England's preparations for Euro 2024 are underway but it all started rather sluggishly for Gareth Southgate's men.

The Three Lions played host to Bosnia at Newcastle's St James' Park and the environment rather felt like a pre-season friendly.

Intensity was lacking, as was the fluidity which should well be ironed out before the opening game of the Euros a week on Sunday.

Such a laboured performance, which saw the score at half-time finish 0-0, was unsurprising given the considerable unfamiliarity of the team.

That said, this was a particularly useful night for Southgate who was able to test out plenty of fresh faces with England eventually prevailing 3-0.

England's biggest winners

Cole Palmer was making his first start in England colours on Monday night and delivered a pretty convincing showing, scoring from the penalty spot to net his first international goal.

The Chelsea star earned a deserved run out having ended 2023/24 as the Premier League's Young Player of the Season. That was thanks to a remarkable campaign after leaving Manchester City behind where the young winger scored 22 goals and supplied 11 assists in the league.

That being said, Palmer will find it tough to emerge as a regular starter out in Germany this summer with competition for places on the right-hand side rather hot. Bukayo Saka is the favourite for that role and he didn't even make the squad on Monday.

Another scorer was Trent Alexander-Arnold, who played the full 90 minutes, starting as a central midfielder before showing his immense potential as a right-back towards the end of the game.

Harry Kane – who else – then rounded off proceedings late in the proceedings after being brought on as a second-half substitute.

The England skipper is undoubtedly the first name on the team sheet and his cameo was certainly bad news for those behind him in the pecking order.

England's biggest loser

Speaking of those behind Kane, Ollie Watkins did himself no favours at all after a stunning campaign for Aston Villa.

Unai Emery's side surprisingly secured Champions League football for next term, an achievement that was largely down to the work of Watkins who scored 19 league goals for his side.

Also assisting 13 times, the most in the division, there was surely no doubting his place on the plane this summer.

Aston-Villa-Emery-Watkins-Champions-League

That was until the win over Bosnia this week. The 28-year-old was handed an extremely rare opportunity to start for his country but was a mere passenger leading the line.

The forward was handed a dismal 4/10 match rating by GOAL's Richard Martin, who wrote of the Villa star's display: 'Hardly got involved in the first half, touching the ball just three times in the first 36 minutes.'

This was a real chance missed for Watkins who has Ivan Toney breathing down his neck for that reserve spot behind Kane.

England's number 9 for the night endured a rather torrid match, touching the ball on just 13 occasions, fewer than goalkeeper Jordan Pickford's 25 for context. He also made just three passes all match, the lowest of any player for the hosts, including the subs.

Failing to register a key pass either, this was a disappointing showing from a striker who had the chance to stake his case for a place on the plane.

Instead, Southgate may well now have a decision to make between him and Toney. Perhaps the latter could make a late point himself against Iceland in a few days time. Watkins' place isn't so certain after all.
