'Wouldn't be surprised if he takes over after Faf' – Nkwe on Bavuma's South Africa future

South Africa’s assistant coach backs Temba Bavuma to return stronger after being dropped

Firdose Moonda in Port Elizabeth14-Jan-2020Temba Bavuma is not among the 12 South Africa players who have assembled in Port Elizabeth to prepare for the third Test against England, but he remains close to the conversation. So close, that assistant coach Enoch Nkwe has indicated that if Bavuma finds form, he could be candidate for the national captaincy in future. That may seem like a long way away for a player with 39 Tests to his name and only one century, scored more than four years ago, who averaged 19.84 in 2019 and has scored 9 and 17 in his last two domestic first-class innings but Bavuma is no ordinary player. He is South Africa’s only only black African Test batsman and has accepted the pressures of being a flagbearer and leader for millions.Bavuma has chosen not to engage in the debate at the moment, posting on social media that his silence is “full of answers”. Instead it was Nkwe, himself a black African batsman, who spoke extensively on the expectations and challenges Bavuma faces and the reasons why the South African administration believes he will be back in a big way.Are you comfortable with where South Africa is in terms of transformation targets and how things are progressing? “There’s been a different approach, but that will come over time. We’re keeping very close with Temba Bavuma, for example. I strongly believe he’s a good player, and he’s in the process of making sure that — from a mental, emotional and skills point of view — when he gets an opportunity to come back, whether it’s in the next Test match or in a different format, he takes ownership of his position and does 10 times more than what he has done. We’re confident and believe in him. [Mark] Boucher is the same, and the rest of the team. All I’m going to ask is that we are more patient. We’re trying to put a few things in place so that we can shape things in the right direction.”Do you think the weight expectation on Temba, being the first black African Test batsman in South Africa, has been detrimental to him?”Knowing Temba, no. There is always going to be pressure in this environment but if you look at it, he has been unlucky. Let’s be honest. There’s been times where he got 95 not out and he was probably one big hit to get over the line and he was unfortunate. There’s been times where he got 70, 80. But also sometimes people tend to forget that the situations he has come in for South Africa have been challenging and he has been able to take the team from that position and put them in a much healthier position. Sometimes he gets out for 60, sometimes he gets out for 50 and if you look at the batting positions over the last couple of years – Nos. 4, 5 and 6 – he has been able to make those massive contributions. They might look small in terms of numbers but his contribution has been very powerful for the team and put them in a winning position. He has had good partnerships with Quinny [Quinton de Kock] and obviously Quinny has been more explosive. If maybe a bit of luck had gone his way, he would have got two or three more hundreds but those things we’ve put behind us.”I know that having spoken to him recently, he is someone that actually looks forward to getting an opportunity. He is going to do everything in his power to make sure that when the next opportunity comes he is ready for it. He wants to be in this environment and hopefully in the future he performs well enough and he can lead the team because I know having worked with him, he is a strong leader, very smart and he is able to lead a massive group to greater heights.”Do you see him as a future captain? “In my mind, yes. I can see that happening. But he does understand that he needs to put in some performances. The future could be in a year’s time, it could be in two years’ time, we don’t know. Having worked with him in the last year-and-a-half, he has got the qualities, there’s no question around that. I wouldn’t be surprised if, after Faf, he takes over. That will be great for South African cricket.”Was it the right decision to send Temba back to franchise cricket? “From a coach’s hat and a high-performance point of view, it’s not healthy just to sit around and not play. If you are not playing, you really need to go and find some game time and fortunately, we have some franchise cricket taking place at the moment and we saw that opportunity for him to go there and stay in the game. Some of the challenges we have when we go on tours, is we have a 15-man squad and only 11 can play and the challenge of those individuals to try and get some game time is massive. It’s not only him; it’s a couple of other guys we have released as well.”

Spurs have unearthed a talent who’s "equally as good" as £86m Arsenal star

Tottenham Hotspur are now in complete control of their own destiny, with a victory over Nottingham Forest moving them into fourth place with a game in hand against fifth-placed Aston Villa.

Spurs flew out the blocks with intensity and purpose, and they were rewarded fairly quickly after a Murillo own goal handed Spurs the lead.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou

Chris Wood equalised just before the half-hour mark, and at half-time, Ange Postecoglou switched out his midfield pairing.

Spurs’ dominance eventually paid off, with two wonderful goals securing the three points, but it was the performance of one individual that made the difference, even more so than Spanish defender Pedro Porro.

Pedro Porro’s performance in numbers vs Forest

There’s no two ways about it: Porro has been fantastic at right back this season, taking to Postecoglou’s philosophy and approach with ease.

Last night, the Spaniard scored his first Premier League goal of the season, unleashing a wonderful strike into the roof of the net, which gave the team some much-needed breathing room.

However, his overall performance was sublime, keeping Callum Hudson-Odoi relatively quiet, making two tackles, and only being dribbled past once, as per Sofascore.

The number 23 was also composed on the ball, playing out of tight spaces with deft passes and touches, which led to his pass accuracy being 91% – among the highest of anyone on the pitch – while taking 78 touches.

Despite this, Porro still wasn’t the best defender, with one of his teammates stealing the spotlight.

Van de Ven’s statistics against Forest

When Micky van de Ven is playing alongside Cristian Romero at the heart of the Spurs backline, the side looks so much more complete, calm and dominant.

The Dutch defender has had a difficult season so far, with two hamstring injuries causing him to lose his momentum, but this performance highlighted just how incredible he truly is.

The 22-year-old made his 20th Premier League start of the season on Sunday, and every single attribute of his complete profile was on display.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold handed Van de Ven an outstanding 9/10 match rating for his showing, describing him as simply “superb,” and the statistics also support that.

Van de Ven was extremely confident in possession, evading the Forest pressure with excellent passing and ball carrying, as shown by his 94% pass accuracy – the highest of any player in the game – and 84 touches.

The left-footed centre-half also showed just how well he can strike a ball, as he scored Spurs’ second goal of the game with a rocket into the top-left corner that was completely unstoppable.

On top of the Dutchman's goal and his influence on the ball, the number 37 also completely dominated Anthony Elanga, Divock Origi, and Wood, with his athleticism allowing him to make five tackles and win all five of his ground duels without being dribbled past once.

Such a performance drew plenty of praise, notably from Jamie Redknapp. Speaking on Sky Sports, he compared the defender to an £86m-rated Arsenal man: "Arsenal fans look at Saliba who’s a great young defender, but I think this guy is equally as good. He’s got everything going for him.

"You can see the difference when Spurs lost him to his hamstring injuries, I think if he stays injury-free then there is no reason he can’t end up like what Virgil van Dijk has done. When Virgil van Dijk was a similar age, he wasn’t producing a performance like that."

It was, without doubt, the perfect centre-half performance, a masterclass even, and the rapid 6 foot 4 monster will play a huge role not just in the rest of this season but in the future of Tottenham football club.

Glenn Maxwell's masterclass keeps Melbourne Renegades winless

A run chase that appeared to be very tight turned into a canter amid some huge sixes

Alex Malcolm10-Jan-2020A Glenn Maxwell masterclass helped the Melbourne Stars cruise past the Melbourne Renegades and remain entrenched at the top of the BBL table. The Stars were 3 for 54 in the seventh over chasing a tricky target of 169, but Maxwell worked his way through the gears to make a flawless 83 not out from 45 balls to mow down the target with eight balls to spare and seven wickets in hand.Glenn Maxwell produced another spectacular innings•Getty ImagesHe struck seven sixes and ran 10 twos. He got outstanding support from Nick Larkin as they shared an unbeaten 114-run stand, of which Larkin contributed just 31.Earlier, the Stars’ bowlers pegged back the Renegades with an outstanding last four overs. Haris Rauf and Nathan Coulter-Nile starred as the Renegades lost 4 for 22 having looked set to make 180-plus. Shaun Marsh hit 63 and shared an 86-run opening stand with Marcus Harris but it went to waste as the innings fell away badly.Change brings returnsAaron Finch’s departure for Australian duty meant the Renegades had to make one change at the top. They made two. Marsh returned to his natural habitat while Harris was promoted. The former was a fait accompli, the latter a genuine surprise. Sam Harper had given the Renegades dynamic starts all year and top-scored with 73 in their last game but was slid all the way to No.6. The change worked. Marsh and Harris put on 86 in 10.3 overs to give the Renegades their best start for the year. They punished anything short, with Stars debutant Lance Morris getting clubbed over the fence twice by Harris. The two left-handers found the boundary in every single over bar the first without taking any undue risks. That was until Harris took on Hilton Cartwright for a reckless single and was run out by a classy direct hit.Old habits die hardStand-in skipper Dan Christian had spoken in the build-up about the need for his top-order players to push onto 70-80 and take the innings deep. Marsh was unable to fulfill his captain’s wish whee chipped a return catch to Sandeep Lamichhane with 39 balls left in the innings. Beau Webster and Christian were promoted to Nos. 3 and 4 and it seemed a masterstroke as they smashed 33 off the next 16 balls including three towering sixes. But Maxwell turned to his big guns in Sandeep Lamichhane, Haris Rauf and Nathan Coulter-Nile with the trio taking 4 for 22 in four overs. Rauf conceded just eight runs off the bat in 12 balls and Coulter-Nile deceived both Tom Cooper and Harper with brilliant slower balls. Marcus Stoinis produced an excellent run out from the deep on the last ball to save another run as the Renegades turned an almost guaranteed total of 180-plus into just 168.Stoinis misfiresStoinis wore the gold cap proudly in the field as the BBL’s leading scoring, but he miscued in the first over of the chase and failed to add to his total. Samit Patel was used first up in a specific match-up and it worked a treat as Stoinis faced two dots before holing out to mid-off. Patel let himself down shortly after dropping a sitter off Ben Dunk before Webster made amends to remove Dunk with a stunning diving catch at mid-off. Cartwright struck the ball powerfully in a new role opening as he clubbed 35 from 21 balls with four fours and a six before playing around a leg break that slid on from Cameron Boyce. The Stars slipped to 3 for 54.Maxwell’s masterclassMaxwell entered this game with scores of 40 not out and 59 not out in the Stars last two matches to make light work of two simple chases. The Renegades set him a task here needing 115 from 79 balls with Stoinis already out and Pete Handscomb absent. He rose to the occasion and put on a clinic. He started in first gear with one boundary in his first 11 balls before he struck his first six, but thereafter he was calculated. He and Larkin ran 10 twos, eight off the bat of Maxwell as he placed and weighted his shots with supreme skill. He didn’t attack the spinners, instead playing risk-free cricket. Then with 60 needed from 30 balls, with Patel bowled out, he flicked the switch. He struck six sixes in 16 balls, five off pace bowlers. Each was bigger than the next. He sealed it with a monster over square leg to win with a scarcely believable eight balls to spare.

Man Utd make first move to sign "great" new free agent for Ten Hag

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe preparing for his first summer at Manchester United, the rumours have already started circling regarding potential incomings, which could include a bargain deal in the coming months.

Man United transfer news

It's been another season to forget for Manchester United, with any progress made by Erik ten Hag last season coming to a crashing halt. Now, reports suggest that the Dutchman's job is at risk thanks to the arrival of Ratcliffe and talk of his desire to appoint the likes of Gareth Southgate or Graham Potter this summer.

Man Utd could finally drop Rashford by unleashing "unpredictable" star

The Man United star has improved massively in recent weeks and should be handed a start.

In what could be a summer of change at Old Trafford, there could be some fresh faces in the form of players, too. Players such as Adrien Rabiot and Serhou Guirassy have stolen the headlines as of late, with both linked to a move to the Red Devils ahead of the summer window. In deals that would improve United's midfield and frontline, Ratcliffe could kickstart his tenure with a bang.

Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

But it's not just these areas that could be handed a fresh coat of paint this summer, as reports are suggesting that those at Old Trafford are in line to potentially land a bargain deal.

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United have made an approach to sign Tosin Adarabioyo in a free deal this summer, alongside Tottenham Hotspur. The Fulham centre-back is set to be a free agent upon the expiry of his current deal at the end of the season, handing United a chance to land a solid bargain in the coming months.

The central defender could replace Raphael Varane at Old Trafford, with the Frenchman's future still in doubt and his contract set to run out in the summer of 2025 to hand the Red Devils little chance to cash in on the World Cup winner.

"Great" Tosin can become bargain Varane replacement

Whilst replacing a World Cup winner is never going to be an easy task, Varane's injury history and struggle for consistency certainly makes things far simpler for Ten Hag this summer. If United can secure a bargain, allowing them to focus their funds elsewhere, it would be the perfect start to the summer window. And that's where Adarabioyo should come in.

Fulham boss Marco Silva will undoubtedly be among those frustrated to see Adarabioyo leave on a free deal this summer, having sung his praises earlier this season.

Silva told beIN Sports: “We missed him a lot, we missed him because he didn’t play the first three months of the season. Tosin is a special player for us, I can’t hide that situation. The way he can defend the box but also on the ball he is a special player for me, the way I want to play, the way he can build (from the back).

"For three months we missed him but he has just played the last four or five games and he is getting better and better. A great performance from him against Everton and to be able to take the last decision to be deciding the game he deserves all the credit.”

Nottingham Forest’s 6/10 star now needs to be benched

Despite leading 1-0 at half-time thanks to a well-taken finish from Chris Wood, Nottingham Forest failed to kill off the game away to Luton Town on Saturday afternoon, with Luke Berry firing home an 89th-minute equaliser to give Rob Edwards' side a valuable point.

The point, which was the Reds' first since the 2-0 win over West Ham United on February 17th, keeps them three points clear of the Hatters and moves them level on points with Sean Dyche's Everton.

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno during a Premier League game.

After a run of three consecutive Premier League defeats, the draw at Kenilworth Road could be a valuable one by the end of the campaign.

However, the Tricky Trees could have come away with a rare away win had they finished clear-cut chances – a real theme of Forest's campaign so far.

Murillo

Players such as Morgan Gibbs-White and Murillo impressed once more, but one Forest player failed to make an impact on the game, in what was his first start in 2024.

Ibrahim Sangare's performance v Luton in numbers

After featuring for the Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations, Forest midfielder Ibrahim Sangare was absent for multiple months and subsequently made his first start of the calendar year during yesterday's draw.

However, the 26-year-old failed to make a positive impact on the game, with the former PSV midfielder looking rusty and out of sorts for large spells during the encounter.

Sangare was dribbled past four times during his 90 minutes on the pitch, also losing nine duels with the Ivorian failing to make his mark and hold down the midfield for Nuno Espírito Santo's side.

The midfielder was just as poor in possession, completing just 17 passes and failing to complete a single dribble as he failed to create opportunities after regaining possession.

Many fans may well have been calling for Sangare to be introduced to the starting lineup. However, his display yesterday was one to forget, with the midfielder failing to take the opportunity with both hands.

His display at Kenilworth Road saw Nottinghamshire Live Forest correspondent Sarah Clapson give the 26-year-old a measly 6/10 rating – not what you'd expect from a player who cost the club £35m last summer.

The man to replace Sangare after the international break

The Reds now have a two-week break before taking on Crystal Palace at the City Ground, in what is yet another huge game as the club looks to cement their Premier League status.

However, after his latest display, Sangare should drop to the bench, with Argentinian Nicolas Dominguez more than deserving of a recall.

When comparing the two in the Premier League this season, Dominguez blows Sangare out of the water in multiple key areas in and out of possession.

The former Bologna midfielder averages four tackles won per 90 in the league this season, a tally that beats Sangare by 0.5 per game – with ball-winning one of Sangare's best qualities.

In possession, the gap between the two is astronomical, with Dominguez completing 84% of passes attempted all campaign, with Sangare trailing the Argentinian with his tally of 80%.

Dominguez's box-to-box nature sees him make more forward passes, as demonstrated in his tally of five per game, 1.1 more than the Ivorian who usually likes to regain possession before laying the ball off, allowing others to progress the play.

Sangare joined the City Ground side with a huge reputation and a lot of hype, but he's not being utilised in his natural 'number six' role, with his game suffering as a result. Nuno could be the man to unlock his abilities, but unfortunately, the Forest faithful are yet to see the towering gem at his best.

Former Man Utd ace was meant to be next Ronaldo and is now struggling

The first impression is always vital when a new player arrives at a club, especially for a side like Manchester United.

When anyone joins the Red Devils, whether it be a player or a manager, the expectation is to bring success and perform almost instantly.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag speaks toAntony

In recent years, only a handful of signings have consistently performed at Old Trafford, with the likes of Antony and Jadon Sancho being examples of individuals who have been unable to star in the Premier League thus far.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at another player who once promised to be a world-beater but instead failed to live up to their apparent potential.

Meet the star who was meant to be the next Cristiano Ronaldo

In 2011, a promising Belgian talent named Adnan Januzaj joined Man United from Anderlecht as a 16-year-old, where he instantly impressed.

On October 5th, 2013, the number 44 was announced in the starting lineup for the first time under David Moyes as Man United faced Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The then-18-year-old was absolutely electric, netting a brace that handed the Red Devils a 2-1 win, which was certainly the perfect way to introduce yourself to the footballing world.

After the game, Januzaj received plenty of praise and encouragement, with Moyes comparing his quality to Wayne Rooney and United youth coach Eric Harrison stating: “Januzaj is outstanding and I think he is similar to Cristiano Ronaldo".

However, the following season saw the arrival of Louis van Gaal, which the winger later claimed to be the reason why he never lived up to his potential at United, despite being an "unbelievable" talent, as per football creator Liam Canning.

Roy Keane's “biggest disappointment" has now become "superb" for Man Utd

The United star has had a remarkable turnaround after a difficult start.

ByTom Lever Mar 14, 2024 Adnan Januzaj’s career since his debut

During the Dutch manager’s first campaign at the club, Januzaj’s minutes and opportunities took a huge hit, starting just seven times in the 2014/15 Premier League.

A year later, the Belgium international only made just two league starts across the campaign, which was due to two separate injuries and a short loan spell at Borussia Dortmund.

With the left-footed ace failing to progress much further, in 2016, he joined Sunderland on a season-long loan in an attempt to revive his career, but over 25 matches, he failed to score a single goal.

In 2017, Januzaj eventually left Old Trafford after a troubled few seasons, joining Real Sociedad in a deal worth £9.8m, a club he would go on to score 23 goals in 168 appearances for.

Five years later, the former Red Devil moved to another La Liga side, this time joining Sevilla on a free transfer, which is where he plays his football today.

Despite being at the club for two seasons, Januzaj has only made 17 appearances, with a failed loan spell at Istanbul Basaksehir in between, where he scored three times in 17 games.

Fast-forward to this season, and the former wonderkid has featured just eight times, even though he has not suffered from any injuries. Januzaj has averaged just 24 minutes per game, and he truly cannot get a game, starting zero times.

At just 29 years of age, the number 25’s career has become completely stagnant, and there have been no signs of him turning it around, especially not at Sevilla.

In truth, it is extremely sad and disappointing to see how Januzaj’s career has unfolded, especially considering just how fantastic he was in his first season under Moyes, after being compared to the legendary Ronaldo in his early days at Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old had a public fallout with manager Erik ten Hag last season which resulted in him getting banished from the first-team squad before United sent him out on a short-term loan deal to Borussia Dortmund. Sancho, though, is now back in the United setup and it seems like he has reconciled with the Dutch manager.

DID YOU KNOW?

Ten Hag has given Sancho regular game time during pre-season and recently hinted that he is considering deploying the English winger in a new position, at least in the first few matches of the upcoming 2024-25 campaign.

Australia's quicks strike after Travis Head's ton cements dominance

The ball may be a different colour, and the playing hours back to normal, but the MCG Test was taking on alarmingly similar proportions to what happened in Perth for New Zealand as Australia exerted their control. First, it came through Travis Head, with his second Test hundred and a stand of 150 with captain Tim Paine, before the extra pace of the home attack removed two wickets before the close. In reply to 467 – and after more than five sessions in the field – it was the loss of Kane Williamson that will have hurt New Zealand the most. Having driven James Pattinson sweetly through the covers, he was lured into pulling a ball well wide of off stump which he skied behind square where Paine continued his fine day with a solid running catch. For Pattinson, it was his first Test wicket in Australia for nearly four years.James Pattinson struck the huge blow of removing Kane Williamson•Getty Images

Pat Cummins, whose seven-over spell included barely a ball off target, had already done for Tom Blundell, who was opening in Tests for the first time, when he edged a drive having shown some initial promise. Tom Latham, battling through 57 balls for his 9, and Ross Taylor – saved by the DRS when he was given lbw to Pattinson on 1 – hung on until stumps. In the lead-up to the Boxing Day Test, Head did not appear fully secure of his place with Australia contemplating five bowlers. Two days into the match and, even if a rejig to the side is discussed, Head’s name will not be up for debate. He resumed on 25, did not find the going easy throughout the day – occasionally becoming more expansive when offered width – and only really freed himself up after passing three figures after tea, but he did not give it away, and that was the standout. He had been kept in the 90s for 45 minutes before the break, including a maiden against Trent Boult which meant he sat on 98 at the interval, and in total needed 41 balls to navigate his way to three figures, which was brought up with his tenth boundary, driven behind point from his 222nd delivery. During the innings, he passed 1000 runs and, with potentially one knock left for 2019, went to 714 runs for the year – moving back above David Warner as Australia’s third-highest scorer – a period that brought him a maiden Test hundred against Sri Lanka in Canberra and then saw him left out of the final Ashes Test, partly for sake of team balance, which appeared could happen again this week. However, while Head’s century was hugely significant both from a personal and team perspective, arguably the most important innings of the day came from Paine, whose positive intent ensured Australia moved the game forward after taking four sessions to secure their superiority.Tim Paine and Travis Head enjoyed an excellent partnership•AFP

Once again, Neil Wagner had produced the most compelling moment of the morning session when he bounced out Smith for the third time in three innings. Smith, who drove the first ball of the day for three, could only manage eight off 50 balls having resumed on 77 following his battle with the short ball on the opening day. It was a brute of a delivery that removed him, rising towards his throat which was gloved to gully where Henry Nicholls held a superb fingertip catch above his head. For a brief period after removing Smith, New Zealand sensed a chance to get back into the match, but that quickly vanished as Paine played a superbly-judged proactive hand either side of lunch. The Australia captain pulled and drove with confidence, one of his best strokes – a pull that bisected deep square-leg and long leg off Tim Southee – taking him to his half-century off 72 balls. He went to tea on 77 with a chance to push for a maiden Test hundred, more than nine years after his debut, but was pinned lbw by the herculean Wagner after New Zealand successfully reviewed.Paine’s dismissal sparked a late collapse of 5 for 33 as Australia’s lower order threw the bat – including Mitchell Starc picking out mid-off when Head was sat on 99 – which handed Wagner and Southee late reward for the toil. Few would have begrudged Wagner a five-wicket haul, but instead he took the catch to end the innings when Nathan Lyon top-edged a hook.Wagner (38 overs) and Southee (33.1) followed their Perth workloads with more hard yards, while Trent Boult (31) and Colin de Grandhomme (30) were not far behind. In the end, Mitchell Santner bowled 20 overs, but only after Australia had passed 400 was he entrusted with more than a three-over spell and he struggled to exert control. The sight of Blundell, a wicketkeeper by trade, bowling three overs of offspin straight after lunch did not speak volumes for the spin-bowling resources. It is something New Zealand will need to assess for Sydney, where the pitch is expected to aid spin, although before then their aim is to try and ensure the series is at least alive.
