Liverpool have hit the jackpot with academy star now worth £20m

Liverpool's academy has been renowned as one of the world's best for some time now.

Many players who came through the ranks at the club, such as Steven Gerrard, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jamie Carragher each managed to have long-standing Premier League careers with their hometown team.

The 2023/24 season, in particular, is where the Reds' academy has been allowed to show its prowess in the development of talent.

Steven Gerrard.

Jurgen Klopp's men have had a major injury crisis all the way through the campaign thus far. Players such as Joel Matip, Stefan Bajcetic and even Alisson are all absent due to the long-term injuries they have sustained either during the 2022/23 campaign or this term.

Fans are unlikely to see Matip appear for the Reds again this season as the Cameroon international managed to rupture his ACL during Liverpool's 4-3 win against Fulham.

In fact, that game against the Cottagers could be the last time we see the centre-back in a Liverpool shirt at all because his contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

However, departing manager, Jurgen Klopp believes FSG will "show their class" and offer the 32-year-old an extension.

"I would say so, but it’s not my decision in the end – I cannot sign the papers,” he said.

"I am pretty sure the club will show their class, just how they should do it. I am pretty sure the club told Joël already that whatever happens as long as he is injured everything is fine. Then we have to make a decision together with Joël how it looks after that."

Although all these players being absent is far from an ideal situation for the Reds, they have still managed to find themselves on top of the Premier League table and find themselves still in contention for a historic quadruple.

Granted, they are just one point ahead of second-placed Manchester City, however, they face one another on the 10th of March in what many are calling a title-deciding game.

One positive aspect which can be taken from the absences Liverpool have suffered is the fact that some of their academy players have had their careers kick-started.

Youngsters such as Jayden Danns, Lewis Koumas and 16-year-old Trey Nyoni have all made their debuts for the Reds' senior squad this term.

However, it is another one of Liverpool's academy players who has been setting the footballing world alight with his performances of late, that player being, Caoimhin Kelleher.

Caoimhin Kelleher's time with Liverpool so far

Described as "world-class" by his teammate Virgil van Dijk, Kelleher has been a constant around Liverpool's senior squad since his first appearance for the club in the third round of the Carabao Cup where Liverpool triumphed 2-0 over MK Dons.

GK – Caoimhin Kelleher

RB – Ki-Jana Hoever

CB – Joe Gomez

CB – Dejan Lovren

LB – James Milner

CM – Adam Lallana

CM – Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

CM – Naby Keita

RW – Harvey Elliott

ST – Rhian Brewster

LW – Curtis Jones

He joined the Reds' academy at the age of 15 from Ringmahon Rangers and managed to make his way through the youth ranks at the club and eventually to the first team.

Since then, he has cemented himself as a penalty shoot-out specialist and has come out on top a total of four times, more than any other Reds goalkeeper in history.

The most memorable of those would more than likely have to be when he rounded off the shoot-out against Chelsea in the 2021/22 edition of the Carabao Cup final.

The Reds won 11–10 thanks to the heroics of the 'keeper and granted Klopp the first Carabao Cup trophy of his tenure.

Carabao Cup winner Virgil van Dijk.

The Republic of Ireland international started to make himself known during Liverpool's pre-season tour during the 2018/19 season, where he appeared multiple times.

From then on, he made sporadic appearances for the first team on numerous occasions, racking up a total of five appearances before playing his first Champions League games against both Ajax and FC Midtjylland.

It was also during the same 2020/21 season when the youngster made his top-flight debut versus Wolves, where he was filling in for the injured Alisson.

Since then, he has only been able to make the odd appearance here and there due to the importance of the Brazilian stopper within the Liverpool line-up.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

However, over the last couple of seasons, the now 25-year-old has been afforded the chance to take the helm in the Carabao Cup games.

This season, the goalkeeper has appeared for the Reds a few more times than he would've likely expected to as Alisson has been ruled out for multiple weeks due to an injury he sustained.

Fortunately for Klopp's men, Kelleher has been on top form.

Kelleher's transfer valuation in 2024

Thanks to his strong performances throughout both 2021/22 and 2022/23, Kelleher was linked with a plethora of clubs over the summer and January transfer windows, with Celtic even being told that a £20m bid would suffice for the 'keeper.

Klopp will now be thankful that they didn't sell their academy graduate as he has managed to perform to an incredibly high standard this season.

The 2023/24 term has been the one in which fans have seen the most of the Irishman. Due to the sheer excellence of Alisson, it's easy to understand why the 25-year-old isn't afforded as many chances as he likely should be.

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Since being called up whilst the 31-year-old is injured, Kelleher has managed to perform to the same level with a handful of superb displays.

Indeed, he has made multiple world-class saves and has cemented himself as one of the best shot-stoppers in the Premier League, notably shining in the Carabao Cup final, as seen below.

Interestingly, when compared to some of his top-flight counterparts, only Arsenal's David Raya has a higher clean sheet percentage (38.1%) than Liverpool's stand-in number one (33.3%) in the Premier League.

Alisson has the same clean sheet percentage as his deputy although, he has played 15 more top-flight games.

The statistics from FBRef also show that the youngster has the third-highest save percentage (71.4%) out of the sample chosen. Only Alisson (75.3%) and, somewhat surprisingly, Manchester United's Andre Onana (73.3%) have a higher amount.

Although statistics can't always be taken for gospel, it shows how well the 'keeper has played this season and outlines how strong of a backup he is.

So, it's no wonder that Klopp has struck gold with the signing of Kelleher and, more than likely, after his stellar form this season, his value will have no doubt increased considerably.

Chris Green encouraged by 'good feedback' from Australia set up

The offspinner has an outstanding powerplay record which may yet earn him international honours

Chris Green points to his team-mate after getting a wicket•CPL T20

Offspinner Chris Green has been encouraged that Australia’s selectors are taking notice of his nomadic T20 career ahead of next year’s World Cup as he returns home ahead of the Big Bash season with the Sydney Thunder.Green has traversed the global over recent months taking part in Canada’s Global T20, the T20 Blast and the CPL having earlier in the year played in the PSL.Most recently he was with the Guyana Amazon Warriors who strung together 11 wins on the bounce to reach the CPL final before falling short against the Barbados Tridents. He continued to excel in his role as a leading Powerplay bowler, conceding under a run-a-ball in that phase of the innings – as well as claiming a career-best 4 for 14 against the Tridents in the group stage – and since April 2016 has the best Powerplay economy (5.96) in the world. This is yet to earn him international honours – with Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar selected in Australia’s T20I squad to face Sri Lanka and Pakistan – but he has been told he is not too far away and will have the chance to shine against international opposition on Thursday as part of the Prime Minister’s XI side against the Sri Lankans in Canberra.”I’ve been fortunate to get some good feedback and the opportunities to play in the CA XI game against South Africa [last season] and now the PM’s game is good feedback to know that you are thereabouts and that’s pretty much what the selectors have told me,” Green told ESPNcricinfo. ” [They said] if you keep putting in performances you will push your case, but I’m fully aware that Zampa and Agar have been doing a good job and Nathan Lyon has been bowling well in one-day cricket as well.”I sort of see of my role as very different to those three so I have to keep growing my game and if I can contribute with the bat more consistently I think that will enhance my chances in the future. My dream is to play cricket for Australia, much like every kid growing up with a cricket bat in hand. I’m just looking forward to the opportunity back on home soil and enjoying the challenge.”Green’s record in the Powerplay may yet be a point of difference that interests the selectors, but the man himself is not one to delve too deeply into the numbers.”It’s nice accolades to get, but to be honest I don’t really pay too much attention to them,” he said. “For me it’s more about competing in the moment on a ball-by-ball basis and hopefully winning those battles will put my teams in good positions. My focus isn’t really on the numbers, it’s more about having fun.”After the Canberra match there will be some grade cricket for Green ahead of the new Big Bash season which begins on December 17. It is a chance for Green to spend some time on home soil and, briefly at least, unpack the suitcase but he is quite happy jetting around the globe.”I’ve got pretty good at packing and unpacking, being home and settling in, that feeling when you sit down on the couch, is really nice. I can’t complain at the moment, I really enjoy what I do, the opportunities I’ve been fortunate enough to get have been so much fun.”The journey I’ve gone on has been unbelievable experience. I really feel that due to the high-pressure nature and fast pace that the way that T20 is it’s really excelled my growth as a cricketer and a person. I still pinch myself on a day-to-day basis to be playing around the world.”After the six T20Is against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, which begin in Adelaide on Sunday, Australia’s next matches in the format will be after the Big Bash on tour in South Africa. That is followed by three more in New Zealand at the end of March.

West Ham eyeing "monster" signing who could convince Paqueta to stay

West Ham United are approaching the business end of the campaign with much to fight for, sat in the lowest European spot in the Premier League – seventh – and preparing for a Europa League quarter-finals clash in April against high-flying German side Bayer Leverkusen.

David Moyes cannot seem to shake the polarity from his position in the dugout but he really has done so much for this club, clinching the Europa Conference League last season and bringing the squad to a fresh level of quality despite Declan Rice's £105m sale to Arsenal.

Arsenal players Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice

Whatever happens, it's clear that the Hammers will need to sign a striker in the off-season. Michail Antonio is ageing and persistently hampered by injury, Danny Ings has flattered to deceive at the London Stadium and Divin Mubama, aged 19, is clearly not trusted with a starring role, yet to start in the Premier League.

West Ham eyeing statement signing

According to Football Insider, West Ham are plotting an audacious swoop for Brentford centre-forward Ivan Toney, emboldened by suggestions that Arsenal have cooled their interest in the England international.

It's claimed that the Hammers want to make a 'statement signing' during the summer, and with suitors Chelsea also facing issues relating to financial regulations, the prospect of him moving to east London is becoming more palpable.

The Bees hope to cash in on their talisman in a deal approaching £100m. Candidly, it's hard to envisage a world where West Ham meet such staggering demands, but Toney wants to leave and the cogs might fall into place.

Why Ivan Toney would be perfect for West Ham

Toney is a proven marksman in the Premier League, scoring 20 goals from 33 top-flight fixtures last season before his lengthy suspension for breaching FA betting rules.

Having returned from his suspension in January, the 28-year-old bagged four goals from his first five Premier League matches of the current campaign, though he has plateaued across recent weeks as Thomas Frank's side nosedive, out of form and sinking closer toward the relegation zone.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney

Quite simply, he would be the dream acquisition for West Ham, an exceptional goalscorer with a combative attitude, deceptive link-up play and phase-building qualities. His tally of 12 big chances created in the Premier League last season was bettered only by Harry Kane's 14.

Moreover, he ranks among the top 1% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for interceptions, the top 9% for clearances and the top 16% for aerial duels won per 90, as per FBref.

If West Ham were to succeed with this unlikely 'statement signing' it would be a portent of further riches in east London, perhaps even convincing current club-record £51m signing Lucas Paqueta to remain with the squad.

Paqueta is a maestro, multi-faceted and not shy to get stuck in and contribute defensively. West Ham have missed the mark on many occasions with high-cost acquisitions but they certainly didn't misfire with this one.

The Brazil international has been brilliant in the Premier League this season, scoring three goals and supplying five assists across 22 matches, creating nine big chances and averaging 1.5 key passes, 2.4 tackles, 6.8 ball recoveries and 8.1 successful duels per game, as per Sofascore.

He's elite, and as such, some of the big boys have noted his performances, with Manchester City prepared to pay £80m for his services last summer before a move was scuppered by an FA investigation into betting breaches.

It wouldn't be a surprise if the 26-year-old was at the centre of intense transfer speculation again in several months, with Pep Guardiola's side reported to be 'ready' to return for the midfielder, as per reports from this month.

With a star striker like Toney chucked into the mix, a real "monster" as described by his Brentford manager, West Ham would underscore their desire to thrive at the forefront of the European game and it might just be the perfect move to convince Paqueta to stay.

Spurs think 24 year-old will miss the rest of the season through injury

Tottenham Hotspur now think a "special" member of Ange Postecoglou's squad will miss the rest of this season following an injury.

Spurs suffer injuries throughout Postecoglou's debut campaign

There is a very serious case to be made that Spurs would be higher up the table, if it wasn't for the plague of absences they've had to cope with throughout 2023/2024.

"Grafts and grafts" – Young Tottenham star getting rave reviews in training

Son Heung-min, Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma travelled for the Asia Cup and AFCON respectively in mid-season, while Postecoglou has been forced to cope without a plethora of other players due to injury at various points.

Micky van de Ven, James Maddison, Manor Solomon, Ivan Perisic, Cristian Romero, Richarlison, Brennan Johnson, Giovani Lo Celso, Ashley Phillips, Ryan Sessegnon and Rodrigo Bentancur have all spent at least a month on the sidelines during Postecoglou's first season in charge, which is pretty ridiculous.

In light of van de Ven's latest injury, which arguably played a part in Tottenham's 3-0 slump away to Fulham, Spurs' head coach has admitted that they will look to sign another centre-back this summer.

“If you’re saying, ‘Is it an area we can strengthen?’, yes it’s an area we will probably look at”, Postecoglou said.

“With all these things, it’s about trying to strengthen the group as much as anything else. If you think about when I first arrived, we had maybe six or seven centre-backs at the club. So it’s not just numbers. It’s more about the ability of those players to play the football we want and to fit in to what we’re trying to build here.

“I think it is an area of the park we will look to strengthen, but I think we’ll look to strengthen all areas of the park come the end of the season. That is planning that’s already underway, and other people are in charge of it at the moment.”

Left-back Sessegnon is already missing the rest of Tottenham's season after another hamstring injury, and now Spurs think the same can be said of 2023 summer signing Solomon.

Tottenham expect Solomon to miss rest of the season after knee surgery

The Isreali international injured his meniscus all the way back in October, which required surgery, but a fresh setback in his recovery prompted minor knee surgery last week.

While he could return to training before the end of 23/24, journalist Wayne Veysey writes for Football Insider that Tottenham do not expect Solomon to play again this season, which comes as a hammer blow for the winger who has had few chances to showcase his quality.

alejo-veliz-manor-solomon-tottenham-opinion

Indeed, Solomon could've been a real asset if it wasn't for his bad luck with fitness issues.

“Manor is a special player; he was excellent at Fulham,” said Avram Grant to Ynet. “I spoke with him, and he’s thrilled to be at Tottenham; he has improved his killer instinct. What sets him apart is his amazing one-on-one ability; he’s among the best."

How Tim Paine gave David Warner three extra minutes for 'a massive achievement'

David Warner has revealed that Australia captain Tim Paine had extended a predetermined cut-off time for the innings to allow the opener to pass the 334-run record jointly held by Donald Bradman and Mark Taylor as the nation’s second highest Test score. The agreed time to end Australia’s domineering innings against Pakistan was 5.40pm Adelaide time, at which point Warner had equalled but not passed 334. However, Paine sent out the message that Warner had time to go to 335 before he closed the innings, allowing the 33-year-old opener to write a fresh page of Australian cricket history a little more than 18 months after the Newlands scandal that had threatened to leave his name more associated with ball tampering than batting. Paine called Warner in immediately after the final single at about 5.43pm.There was never any question in Warner’s mind – or that of others – about batting long enough to challenge Brian Lara’s world record 400* against England, or Matthew Hayden’s 380 against Zimbabwe. This was due to a grim weather forecast, with the time gained on the second evening allowing the Australians to rip out six Pakistan wickets before stumps, leaving only 14 more to get for a series sweep.ALSO READ: Brettig – ‘Ironman’ David Warner’s 335-run journey from ignominy to history“I don’t think so at all. We really looked at the weather that’s around tomorrow, we wanted to give ourselves a lot of time,” Warner explained after the day’s play. “If we could have the amount of overs we got tonight and try to get a couple of wickets, we’ve managed to get six wickets down, if there is a bit of rain about tomorrow, the bowlers get a good rest, only have to come out and try to get 14 wickets in the last two days, so it wasn’t a thing in our mind to go out there and try to get that record or anything.”The first person I asked was [Steven] Smithy when I was out there batting. I said how many overs do you reckon we’ll have at them tonight, and it was literally that perfect amount. Then I came in, I think at that [tea] break, and I said ‘when are we declaring’, and they said ‘5.40pm’ and I said ‘ok’. I kept on asking when we were out there, we got to five, then ten past five, and I was making sure that was still the message and it was. Until I think that last over before, it just ticked over [5.40pm] and Painey wanted me to try and get past that 334 mark.”Reflecting on the innings, Warner said he had wanted to “make a statement” in the wake of his poor Ashes tour. “It is obviously a massive achievement. But for me, it is always about coming out here and trying to make a statement,” he told . “Through my poor form in England, but to come back to Australia and put back-to-back performances on the board and have that consistency back here and start the summer well for our team, that is what I was more proud of myself for.”Yeah 100% I was aware of it [the history]. You grow up knowing what those milestones are. Forever you talk about Donald Bradman. I remember Michael Clarke at the SCG declared on 329 not out. They’re things that you look at the history books and say, ‘how did they get there – that’s a long time in the middle’. I managed to go out there and do that but it takes an incredible amount of patience which I surprised myself.”Looking back on a grim Ashes series, Warner said that he had learned a valuable lesson about backing his own game rather than listening to too many voices, however well-meaning, about how he should play against the moving ball. “You’re going to have people who doubt you, and through that whole series I said ‘I wasn’t out of form, I was out of runs’,” he said. “If I had my time again I would’ve not changed my guard, I wouldn’t have listened to some external noises, I would’ve backed myself more and bat where I have been here outside off, leaving the ball patiently, getting my bat and pad closer together and under my nose, and I am capable of that.”I just think in England you can get caught up in playing too much in front [of the body], especially with the way I play, so I’ve had to regroup coming back from England, I’ve hit 3500-4000 balls leading into Brisbane and here as well I batted for a good two hours per session as well.”It’s not by chance that I’ve actually tightened all that up, I’ve actually been working really hard on it in the nets, it’s one of those things where I’m a very confident person, whether I scored these runs or didn’t score these runs, I still hold my head up high and have that little smirk on my face that I always have.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe ready to approve £100m Man Utd move for "complete" player

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is thought to be ready to give the green light for Manchester United to sign a highly-rated "complete" player this summer, according to a new transfer rumour.

Man Utd transfer news

The upcoming summer transfer window promises to be an exciting one at Old Trafford, with Ratcliffe now overseeing football matters after acquiring a 25% stake in the club. The boyhood fan may well be eyeing plenty of business, in order to help the Red Devils to return to the top of the English game, and plenty of players have been linked with moves.

In one audacious transfer rumour that has emerged, United have even been backed to sign Bayern Munich and England superstar Harry Kane at some point in the future, should he seal a return to England. That's according to West Ham coach Kevin Nolan, who said:

"I can certainly see him back in the Premier League. I don’t think Tottenham would have ever have sold him to Manchester United, but for him to go to Bayern Munich, then it’s easier for him to come back from Germany and I think Man United will be his destination."

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has also been linked with a switch to United, with the Nigerian once again enjoying an impressive season for the reigning Italian champions, scoring 11 goals in 15 starts in Serie A.

Napoli star Victor Osimhen

Away from possible incoming signings, Ratcliffe will look to bring in a new sporting director, with Dan Ashworth a primary target after being placed on gardening leave by Newcastle United, and it isn't out of the question that Erik ten Hag could be sacked as manager in the summer.

Bologna boss Thiago Motta has emerged as an option to replace the Dutchman once the season is over, guiding his team to fourth place in Serie A, and Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi is also among the targets.

Ratcliffe ready to approve Man Utd move for midfielder

According to The Sunday Mirror [via Sky Sports], Ratcliffe 'is set to approve a record-breaking offer of just over £100m' to secure the signing of Benfica midfielder Joao Neves this summer.

Benfica's Joao Neves

A record-breaking deal of over £100m is mooted, with the 19-year-old considered one of the most exciting young midfielders in European football, being hailed by former coach Luis Castro:

"My friends ask me if Kokcu cost 25 million euros, how much will Joao Neves cost. He will be worth much more than €25 million. He can play in any championship in the world. (He’s) a complete and very intelligent player. The Premier League is the best league in the world, and not only would he be able to adapt, but he would also play and shine."
