Tottenham’s £15m Gem Showed Why He’s "Sickeningly Good" Vs Burnley

Tottenham Hotspur continued their unbeaten start to the new Premier League season with a rampant, 5-2 victory away to newly-promoted Burnley on Saturday afternoon, with Ange Postecoglou's side surging to second in the table following a third successive win in the top-flight.

Just a few days on from their early Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Fulham, the Lilywhites were dealt a further blow after conceding inside four minutes following Lyle Foster's early strike, albeit with a clinical comeback – including a stunning hat-trick for new skipper Heung-min Son – helping to power the visitors to a deserved three points at Turf Moor.

Who impressed for Tottenham against Burnley?

It had looked to be an uncomfortable afternoon for the north London outfit amid their early setback, although the aforementioned Son took charge to help steer his side to victory, with the South Korean sensation notably producing a delightful dinked finish over the onrushing James Trafford to draw the away side level on the 16-minute mark.

Having failed to score or register an assist in the league this season prior to the trip to Lancashire, the 31-year-old certainly made up for lost time after producing two more ruthless finishes after the break, with the decision to deploy the experienced ace in a number nine role having certainly paid off for Postecoglou.

It is fair to say that Son wasn't alone in sparking that brutal rout for the visitors, however, with summer signing James Maddison – who was dubbed a "joy to watch" by The Athletic's Tim Spiers – pulling the strings effortlessly in the centre of the park, while getting in on the act himself with a curling finish from range.

That stellar strike epitomised a performance of sheer class from the Englishman as he also registered one key pass and completed three of his four attempted dribbles, proving a real thorn in the side of Vincent Kompany's men, while defender Cristian Romero also got in on the act with a sensational finish on the stroke of half-time.

Destiny Udogie

Aside from those who got themselves on the scoresheet, one man who also proved just why he is "sickeningly good" – in the words of footballJOE's Hunter Godson – was promising full-back, Destiny Udogie, with the young Italian simply shining down the left flank.

How did Udogie perform against Burnley?

Signed from Udinese on an initial £15m deal last year, before instantly returning to the Serie A side on loan, the 20-year-old had been something of an unknown quantity to most when he arrived back at N17 over the summer, although both fans and pundits alike are now seemingly fully aware of his talents.

A player who could well get "into nearly every team in the world already" – in the words of Godson – the Verona native notably helped to tee up Maddison with an assist after winning back possession high up the pitch, showing great composure to pick out the former Leicester City man who seemingly had the freedom of Turf Moor in the centre of the park.

That was also evidence of the youngster's battling nature and determination to reclaim the ball for his side as he won eight of his nine ground duels on the day, while also making five tackles, three clearances and two interceptions as a marker of his ability to sniff out the danger.

As his assist also illustrated, the exciting left-back has that much-needed composure to boot when he himself gets on the ball, having enjoyed a standout pass accuracy rate of 93% from his 66 touches, with his match rating of 7.8, as per Sofascore, behind only that of Son, Maddison and Manor Solomon among his starting teammates.

Of course, it is still early days in Udogie's time in England and in Tottenham's season, although it will be hard for Spurs supporters to not get carried away about the quality that they have seen so far under the new regime.

Tottenham: Postecoglou Could Sign £69m "Phenomenal Kane Replacement" By Deadline Day

Tottenham Hotspur may have spent well this summer, but with just days before the window slams shut, they still do not have their replacement for Harry Kane sorted…

Who could replace Harry Kane?

Fans will likely bemoan a window marred should they fail to reinvest the vast funds gained from his sale to Bayern Munich, despite the bright start that welcomed James Maddison and Micky Van de Ven.

Lilywhites boss Ange Postecoglou has likely dampened the potential uproar too due to his fine start to the season, with three impressive Premier League displays that have them sat third in the table.

However, there is a belief that with a new star striker to spearhead the new era, they could reach even loftier heights.

Therefore, perhaps the north London outfit could seek to reignite their interest in Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, who is reportedly available this summer for a reported €80m (£69m).

How good is Dusan Vlahovic?

To outline just how impressive the Serbia international would be for Spurs, BBC Sport contributor Raj Chohan even claimed way back in 2021: “Vlahovic would be a phenomenal Kane replacement”.

Although his goalscoring alone would help to support this claim, it is also his immense physicality that would ease his integration into English football.

Standing at 6 foot 3 but boasting blistering speed, defenders would never know whether to give him space to mitigate for the latter, or stick tight and try and battle with him.

Clearly, the Serie A is yet to figure out a solution, given how free-scoring the 23-year-old machine has been since bursting onto the scene three years ago.

The 2020/21 season saw him truly announce himself as one of Europe’s outstanding young forwards, as he scored 21 in the league and attracted the interest of many.

Then, in the following campaign, he would notch a further 24 league goals and assist five, trading Fiorentina for Turin midway through the term.

Unsurprisingly, that season saw him maintain a 7.23 average rating, further buoyed by his surprising creativity as he maintained 0.8 key passes per game, via Sofascore.

BBC pundit Micah Richards even suggested that there are few strikers on the planet who compare with him, telling BBC Radio Five Live back in 2021 (via The Independent):

“I have watched him a couple of times now. He is lightning. It’s ridiculous. He has got 16 in 18 this season. His left foot is like a wand. I am telling you now, he is everything, he is everything you need.”

dusan-vlahovic

As if to emphasise just how outstanding he could be with a switch to England, FBref have included Erling Haaland on his ‘similar players’ list.

Given how the Manchester City star enjoyed immediate success after joining last summer, going on to score 52 goals in all competitions and break numerous records, Vlahovic will hope that he can use his similar physical frame and finishing prowess to emulate such success.

Although not quite as creative as Kane, who won both the Golden Boot and Playmaker award in just one season back in 2021, the talismanic Old Lady star could more than make up for the vast number of goals they will lose in the absence of the England captain and prove Chohan's claims correct.

Bangladesh pick uncapped Nayeem Hasan for first Sri Lanka Test

Nayeem’s inclusion comes as a big surprise since he has played only four first-class matches and hasn’t been mentioned in any selection conversations in the last three months

Mohammad Isam26-Jan-2018Bangladesh have picked Under-19 offspinner Nayeem Hasan in the 14-man squad for the first Test against Sri Lanka. Seventeen-year old Nayeem is currently playing the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand. His inclusion comes as a big surprise since Nayeem has played only four first-class matches and hasn’t been mentioned in any selection conversations in the last few months.Squad for first Test

Shakib Al Hasan (capt), Mahmudullah (vice-capt), Tamim Iqbal, Litton Das, Mushfiqur Rahim, Imrul Kayes, Mominul Haque, Mosaddek Hossain, Taijul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Kamrul Islam, Mehidy Hassan, Rubel Hossain, Nayeem Hasan.
IN: Nayeem Hasan, Shakib Al Hasan, Mosaddek Hossain, Kamrul Islam
OUT: Subashis Roy, Soumya Sarkar, Sabbir Rahman, Shafiul Islam, Taskin Ahmed

Chief selector Minhajul Abedin said that Nayeem will be returning from New Zealand to join the Test squad.”Nayeem is a talented bowler and since we wanted an additional offspinner, we picked him,” Minhajul told ESPNcricinfo. “He is a good option. He is coming back from New Zealand since we lost to India today.”The squad sees other major changes too. Shakib Al Hasan returned as captain after he was rested for the South Africa Tests last year while Mosaddek Hossain and Kamrul Islam were also recalled. Mosaddek was recovering slowly from an eye condition but he scored a century in the Bangladesh Cricket League first-class competition last week. The selectors dropped Subashis Roy, Soumya Sarkar, Sabbir Rahman, Shafiul Islam and Taskin Ahmed. The three pace bowlers hardly made an impact in South Africa or in first-class matches recently. Soumya, too, hasn’t made many runs after being dropped from the ODI squad for poor form in South Africa.Sabbir has also been batting poorly in the ODIs and was guilty of throwing his wickets away in the Tests in South Africa.

Cooper, Short fifties move Renegades into semi-finals

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsCatches win matches. An exceptional display of catching from the Melbourne Renegades has ended the Brisbane Heat’s season and breathed life into the Hobart Hurricanes, who narrowly scrape into the BBL semi-finals despite a loss to the Melbourne Stars. The Renegades will face the Adelaide Strikers in Adelaide in the second semi-final on Friday while the Hurricanes travel to Perth to face the Scorchers on Thursday. The Renegades’ new-look top order again laid the foundation for a large total. Tom Cooper, Matthew Short and Marcus Harris combined for 169 between them and were particularly savage on the pace of Mark Steketee and Ben Cutting. But it was the catching that was the difference. Harris took a screamer to remove the dangerous Chris Lynn. The Renegades held every half-chance offered bar one late when the game was won. The twin failures of Lynn and Brendon McCullum put the Heat in a hole they could not climb out of.Getty Images

Momentum at the topHarris and Short put together a 77-run stand from just 50 balls in the previous win over Sydney Thunder. They continued that form at the Gabba. Their opening partnership was a little slower, 74 from 58 balls, but no less important in terms of laying the platform. With the exception of the first over, the left-right combination was able to find the boundary at least once every over to maintain a healthy rate throughout the Powerplay and beyond. Harris was savage on anything short of a length, while Short was able to find the boundary against the spin threats of Yasir Shah and Mitch Swepson despite absorbing a number of dot balls.Cooper’s clinicCooper has played some gems in this BBL and this innings was no exception. The 360-degree nature of his play makes him incredibly difficult to bowl to. His ability to ramp and reverse-ramp quicks forced different plans and he was able to score more freely in other zones. The fear of getting ramped to fine leg meant he was given width on a number of occasions. He also got some off-speed length deliveries that he could hit down the ground with mid-off or mid-on inside the ring. Short was a great ally. He made his maiden T20 fifty before falling to a stunning return catch by Josh Lalor. He stuck out his hand to a tracer-bullet drive and was able to knock the ball up and catch the rebound. Cooper kept rolling to finish with 65 not out from just 36 balls. There was a fear the Renegades may have been under par given they had wickets in hand but 187 was a very good total nonetheless.Sticky handsLynn held the key to the chase as he usually does. On return from a calf injury he was cautious early by his standards but still flew to 21 from 12 balls with two sixes and two fours. The 13th ball Lynn faced was full outside off and in his speed slot. He drilled an off-drive at head height to mid-off, where Harris dove full-stretch to his left and plucked it from thin air. Lynn was stunned. The Renegades were ecstatic. McCullum and Sam Heazlett then did not hit a boundary for 13 balls against the pace of Kane Richardson, Chris Tremain and Jack Wildermuth before both men fell off successive balls to good catches. The catching masterclass did not stop there. Matt Renshaw skied one over mid-off and Cooper ran back full-tilt from inside the circle to reel in a one-hander. The Heat looked cooked, needing 112 runs from 53 balls to make the semi-finals.Hopes dashedCutting and Alex Ross threatened. Cutting hit three enormous, consecutive sixes off Richardson at the start of the 15th over to give the game life. But the Heat still needed 13 per over and he holed out to another good catch from Harris on the fence off Dwayne Bravo. Ross also fell to a stunning one-hander. It came from an unlikely source in Jon Holland. Ross slashed a short wide ball from Tremain hard to the right of Holland at short third man. Holland flung out his non-dominant right hand and the ball stuck neatly in his palm. Tremain, Richardson and Bravo cleaned up the tail.

Morgan, Moeen find form in warm-up canter

England enjoyed a good all-round workout in their preparation for the ODI series with Australia, easing to a five-wicket win with almost ten overs to spare against a Cricket Australia XI

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsEngland enjoyed a good all-round workout in their preparation for the ODI series with Australia, easing to a five-wicket win with almost ten overs to spare against a Cricket Australia XI at Drummoyne Oval.Captain Eoin Morgan led them home in a chase of 259, scoring an unbeaten 81 from 76 balls, to go with solid contributions from most of the England top order. Alex Hales, batting at No. 3 in the absence of Joe Root, made 52 off 35, while Jason Roy shook off the effects of a finger injury suffered in the field to strike 40 from 48.Both sides fielded 12 players, with Root fit enough only to run the drinks after he was laid low by a bout of gastroenteritis during the fifth Ashes Test.Hales was making his first appearance for England since being ruled out of selection for the last two games of the ODI series with West Indies in September, following his part in the incident that led to Ben Stokes’ arrest in Bristol. England, however, chose to stick with Roy and Jonny Bairstow at the top of the order, with the latter hitting a run-a-ball 36 during an opening stand of 74 in 12.4 overs.Legspinner Daniel Fallins, 21, broke the partnership by having Bairstow taken behind the stumps and he also snared Hales, after a rapid innings that included four fours and three sixes. Jos Buttler also added a quickfire 28 before Gabe Bell struck twice, but Morgan and Sam Billings finished things off with an unbroken stand of 52.The CA XI were limited to 258 for 9 from their 50 overs, with Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid standing out for England with the ball. Moeen, in particular, put a dismal Ashes behind him by taking 2 for 28 from his 10 overs, although he could only manage 1 off two balls with the bat.Travis Dean was one of Moeen’s victims, having anchored the first half of the innings with 62 from 63. His fellow opener Matt Renshaw, captaining the side, fell to Liam Plunkett, who claimed 2 for 52, before Moeen and Rashid got a grip on the middle order. The scoring was lifted by a sparkling 48-ball 59 from 17-year-old No. 6 Mackenzie Harvey. He smacked four fours and four sixes – including three off Mark Wood, whose 10 overs went for 68 – before becoming one of Rashid’s three victims.

Fabrizio Romano: Newcastle rumours are "true" with rival star

Newcastle United are still active in the transfer window even though the new Premier League season is well underway. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has offered an update to GIVEMESPORT on their pursuit of Arsenal and Scotland fullback Kieran Tierney.

Something stands in the way of Tierney transfer?

Newcastle got off to the best possible start last weekend as they put Aston Villa to the sword, romping past them at St James’ Park to a 5-1 victory. Alexander Isak scored a brace whilst the opener was grabbed by none other than debutant Sandro Tonali.

An even bigger test is up next as the Magpies prepare to face Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City who are fresh off of their Super Cup victory.

Dan Burn started at left-back against Unai Emery’s Villa and will surely hold on to that spot for the trip to the Etihad. That being said, Eddie Howe and co are on the hunt for an upgrade in that position with Kieran Tierney at the top of their list, along with Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella.

This Tierney saga has gone back and forth with Real Sociedad and Celtic also interested in striking a deal for the Scotsman. The major sticking point has been surrounding whether it would be a permanent deal or a loan, something which La Real and the Gunners have been unable to agree on.

What is Fabrizio Romano's update?

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano gave his opinion on what we can expect regarding Tierney and Newcastle to GIVEMESPORT.

"There is interest from Newcastle United, it's true, but again, with Arsenal asking for a permanent transfer, we know the Newcastle situation with Financial Fair Play is not that easy.

"So they have to be careful on how they spend money, what kind of proposal they can offer to Arsenal.

"So that's why the deal is not so easy. But it's true that he's appreciated. So, I think in the next few weeks, something could happen for Tierney."

Should Arsenal let Tierney leave?

A lot of the chatter amongst the Emirates faithful relates to these Tierney links and whether or not their club should allow him to move on to pastures new.

Ben Jacobs revealed on the Loaded Mag NUFC podcast the position of Arteta on the future of Tierney.

“The starting point of Arteta, I understood, was that if Tierney was happy at Arsenal, Arteta was happy with Tierney staying because he’s hugely valued as a squad player and they’re going to have a lot of important games now that they’re back in the Champions League.

Jacobs then went on to echo a sentiment shared by a large amount of Arsenal fans, saying that, “What if Zinchenko gets injured? You’d love a player like Tierney there that can come in.”

As previously mentioned, the Gunners now have UCL action to contend with as well and Zinchenko hardly boasted the most positive fitness record last term. Knee problems and two separate calf issues kept the Ukrainian international out of action for over 150 days in 2022/23, as per Transfermarkt, so the decision to part ways with his only realistic replacement would certainly raise eyebrows across the Premier League landscape.

Chelsea: Badiashile Injury Update Before Nottingham Forest

Chelsea are gearing up for their fourth Premier League clash of the new campaign as they host Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge, and an injury update has come to light on defender Benoit Badiashile among others.

Who is injured for Chelsea?

Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino have overseen a fairly mixed start to his reign and the new top season, with Chelsea securing a victory, draw and loss from their opening three matches.

They started the campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool, while high-flying West Ham dealt Pochettino his first loss as Chelsea manager with a 3-1 victory over them at the London Stadium soon after.

The west Londoners did seal their first win of the new top flight campaign with a comfortable 3-0 drubbing of Luton Town, but only just managed to edge past AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup a few days later.

It is difficult to predict exactly what to expect from Chelsea going by these results, and it will be interesting to see if Pochettino can quickly a gel a plethora of new summer signings into a much-changed side from last campaign.

Indeed, Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi, Nicolas Jackson, Lesley Ugochukwu, Robert Sanchez, Romeo Lavia, Moises Caicedo and Cole Palmer all put pen to paper on moves to Chelsea.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

They come in to replace Kalidou Koulibaly, N'Golo Kante, Edouard Mendy, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Cesar Azpilicueta, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ethan Ampadu and Callum Hudson-Odoi; who all secured moves elsewhere.

The heavy change in personnel could prove challenging for Pochettino as he seeks to rebuild the side in his own image, and he won't be helped by the plethora of Chelsea injuries either.

Relaying the latest injury news, Chelsea share that the Blues will be without as many as nine players for their clash with Forest today.

Armando Broja, Trevoh Chalobah, Reece James, Lavia, Carney Chukwuemeka, Wesley Fofana, Marcus Bettinelli and Badiashile are the men in question.

For the latter player, while he is set to miss the Forest clash today, he has apparently returned to partial team training and is scheduled to return after the international break (chelseafc.com).

How good is Benoit Badiashile?

Benoit-Badiashile

The 22-year-old's return after Forest will come as a boost for Pochettino, especially since he actually ranked among Chelsea's top four players last season, according to WhoScored.

Badishile has also been praised by former AS Monaco assistant manager and current Antalyaspor assistant Joao Tralhao, who worked with the colossal 6 foot 4 defender during Thierry Henry's time in charge of the Ligue 1 outfit.

"In terms of personality, he is very cold," said Tralhao to Sky.

"He does not shake if he is playing against Mbappe or Neymar, if the stadium is empty or full. He is a very balanced boy. His character is outstanding. He focuses on what he must do to perform. It is one of his best qualities.

"He has that maturity and that emotional control. That impressed Thierry a lot and he had no hesitation to play him. Some questioned that. He was 17 and centre-back is a position that requires some experience. Now we can say Thierry was right to bet on him."

Everton Submit Bid For "Fantastic" £12m Dynamo To Help McNeil

Everton may well have found their new talisman as Sean Dyche looks to finalise his summer transfer activity, with one journalist stating the club are homing in on a former Premier League star.

What's the latest on Che Adams to Everton?

Indeed, according to The Athletic's Jacob Tanswell, Southampton striker Che Adams is close to a move to Everton after the club submitted a £12m offer for the 27-year-old striker, bypassing interest from AFC Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest.

Read the latest Everton transfer news HERE…

The Scotland international suffered relegation from the top-flight with Saints this year, but the figure of just £12m could lead it to be quite an astute purchase.

The Toffees have already signed Arnaut Danuma and Jack Harrison on loan, whilst also completing the £15m signing of teenage striker Youssef Chermiti.

How good is Che Adams?

When the rejoicing simmered down following Everton's 1-0 victory over Bournemouth on the final day of the 2022/23 season, Dyche will have hoped to swiftly make the requisite moves to effectively bolster the frontline.

Everton concluded the previous term as the division's second-lowest goalscorers, and with Dominic Calvert-Lewin spending large portions of the season out injured and Neal Maupay, who joined from Brighton & Hove Albion for £15m last summer, yielding just one goal for the Goodison Park side.

While Adams is not a marquee name, he is a solid and dependable striker and, at £12m, could very well be a shrewd signing for a team looking to restore their attacking impetus, once praised as "fantastic" by former manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Having scored 33 goals and supplied 15 assists from 148 outings for Southampton, Adams is definitely not the most prolific of forwards but he is a "clever" attacking outlet – as called by pundit Ally McCoist – and could improve the increased dynamism that stems from acquisitions of Harrison and Danjuma.

Che Adams

Despite Saints' woes last season, Adams plundered five goals and three assists from just 23 league starts, taking 1.7 shots and creating 0.9 key passes per game, very much the "focal point" – according to former Southampton midfielder Jo Tessem – that Everton need.

For a striker, 0.9 key passes is not half bad, with Calvert-Lewin averaging 0.5 and Maupay averaging 0.3, for example.

By introducing such a selfless, multi-faceted talisman, the goalscoring fortunes of Harrison and Danjuma would improve, but perhaps more integrally, it could be a sure-fire way of ensuring Dwight McNeil continues his Midas touch in front of goal.

Signing from Burnley for £20m in 2021 upon the Clarets' relegation from the Premier League, McNeil started slowly but finished the term with seven goals and three assists – Everton's top scorer in the division, somewhat alarmingly.

The £25k-per-week winger also created 11 big chances and averaged 1.4 key passes per outing, and his varied approach could set him up to blend seamlessly with Adams, who could offer something different to the Toffees attack.

Hailed as "magnificent" by scout Ryan Williams for his purple patch at the end of the previous campaign, scoring five goals and supplying one assist across the final 12 league matches, McNeil shone despite the discord plaguing the Everton attack.

But with the 27-year-old Saints striker entering the fold, Dyche could be making a move that, while it might go under the radar, would bolster the squad and increase the fluidity and harmony on Merseyside, pushing the club one step further toward security away from the pit of the Premier League table.
