England crush CA XI, but batting vulnerabilities persist

The performance of the bowlers was the most encouraging aspect for England in the tour game, but there are still issues around batting, particularly lower-order depth, that need addressing

Those England supporters waking on a chilly November morning and checking the scores from Down Under might well feel encouraged by confirmation of a crushing victory in Adelaide. And, to some extent, that is fair enough. It took just half-an-hour to polish off the CA XI on the final day in Adelaide and the eventual margin – 192 runs – does not lie: there was a chasm of quality between these sides. But some context is required. Regular observers of Ashes tours rated this CA XI side the weakest opposition England had faced in a first-class game here since the Packer years in the late 1970s. That England face them again in Townsville next week means they will face a sharp step-up in class – and pace – when they reach Brisbane. Whether that is by design or accident is largely irrelevant but the toughest opposition they will face before Brisbane will be the crocodiles they encounter when they visit a wildlife sanctuary on Monday. The most encouraging aspect of this match for England was the performance of their bowlers. Despite the epidemic of injuries – it now transpires that Liam Plunkett has a minor hamstring strain and was not deemed fit for a call-up as cover – the England attack is looking good. James Anderson and Chris Woakes are bowling at something approaching their best and Craig Overton is improving by the spell. He is not especially fast, but his height helps him generate steep bounce and he is moving the ball both ways.He did his chances of selection no harm at all here. He struck with his sixth delivery of the day – Matthew Short bowled off the inside edge as he attempted to slog a length ball – and, after hitting Daniel Fallins on the helmet with a bouncer, saw Anderson polish off the tail. The CA XI added only five to their overnight total. The batting is less convincing. Against a modest attack, none of their batsmen could manage more than 63 runs in an innings and Ryan Harris, coach of the CA team in this match, was attempting no psychological gamesmanship when he described it as “vulnerable” after the match. “Their batting is vulnerable, absolutely,” he said. “Especially with no Ben Stokes at six or seven.”Nobody looks further from form than Alastair Cook. And, given the inexperience of England’s batting line-up, that is a concern. But Cook has looked poor before only to respond with a mountain of runs. It may be telling that the last time he looked this scratchy was in 2010. Just before he scored 766 runs in an Ashes series. He has proved himself so many times; it would be madness to discount him now.The other area England have some concerns is the length of their tail. While Overton has some pedigree with the bat – despite failing to register a half-century during the 2017 county season – he recorded a pair in this game. While it would be unreasonable to expect too much of a No. 9 – his likely batting position – England have become accustomed to being bailed out by their lower middle-order and, given the on-going fragility of their top-order, they could do with similar resistance in this series.”It hasn’t quite gone to plan,” Overton said sheepishly after the match. “I know I need to improve my batting and it’s something I’m working on.”Where does all this leave England? They depart for Townsville on Sunday with a good idea of the team for the first Test. While Jake Ball has not, at this stage, been ruled out of contention, he is unlikely to play in Townsville and will, therefore, be short of bowling ahead of the Test series. Overton, therefore, is likely to win selection as fourth seamer.Meanwhile Moeen Ali and Stuart Broad both bowled in the middle once the match finished. They will play in Townsville next week and, barring injury, will also play in the first Test. James Vince will bat at No. 3 – one of the great gambles of modern selections – with Dawid Malan looking quietly impressive – and far more elegant and comfortable than he did in England – at No. 5. It is not the strongest team England have brought to Australia, but they’re not playing the strongest opposition, either.Given any help from conditions, this England attack is dangerous. On flat surfaces, the sort they encountered at Lord’s and The Oval in 2015, they may struggle to make inroads. But if Australia leave a little extra grass on pitches in the belief it will help their own attack, it may open the door for England. The fact that the Adelaide Test is to be played under lights and with a pink ball would appear to be to England’s advantage. The other area they can exploit is Australia’s overwhelming desire to not just beat them but destroy them. Just as Moeen Ali benefitted from Australia’s over-aggressive approach against him at Cardiff in 2015 – David Warner and Steve Smith attempted to hit him out of the attack rather than milking him – so the whole of England’s attack will look to prey on that impatience during this series. Australia are favourites, but not, perhaps, by the margin they might have you believe.

ABC, BBC locked out of Ashes radios

Fans wishing to listen to commercial-free, ball-by-ball radio coverage of the Ashes series at the venue will need to bring their own radios after Cricket Australia froze out the ABC and the BBC

Daniel Brettig at Adelaide02-Dec-2017Fans wishing to listen to commercial-free, ball-by-ball radio coverage of the Ashes series at the venue will need to bring their own radios after Cricket Australia froze out the ABC and the BBC from the three-channel earpieces sold and distributed at each ground. The commercial networks Channel Nine, BT Sport and Triple M are the networks included on the earpieces, which have been part of the at-ground experience in Ashes Tests since 2010-11. In recent summers the earpieces have generally been tuned to take coverage from Nine, the ABC and Fairfax radio. The choice of broadcasters, omitting the two leading radio providers with long histories of covering the game in Australia and England, raised numerous eyebrows during the first Test of the series in Brisbane. It was initially thought that CA may rotate the networks used on the earpieces on a match-by-match basis this series, in part to acknowledge the bigger-than-usual array of coverage options available for the Ashes and its wider-than-ever attendant following. However ESPNcricinfo has learned that Nine, BT and Triple M will retain their places on the device throughout all the remaining Tests in Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney, with the only likelihood of change to be for the limited-overs matches that follow the Ashes.”We have five broadcasters and three channels,” a CA spokesman said. “The Nine Network is allocated one because it engages with the largest audience (8 million Australians watched the Brisbane broadcast), and BT provides English fans at the match with the English commentary.”This year we are rotating the third slot to be fair to our radio broadcasters: the ABC and Macquarie have each had a channel for a number of years, when we had just the one TV broadcast, and this year it is Triple M’s turn.”In its strategy document released earlier this year, CA stated that its goal for followers of the game is that: “We will give fans what they want and grow the Big Bash.”This summer is the last of the existing domestic broadcast rights deals with Nine for international cricket and the Ten Network for the BBL and WBBL, which were signed in 2013 and worth A$590 million over five years. Formal negotiations are expected to begin in the new year, following Ten’s successful acquisition by the American broadcasting giant CBS.

Chand, Rana help Delhi prevail in tricky chase

ScorecardBCCI

Delhi stumbled towards their 252-run target in the last hour of the final day, but eventually came out trumps by four wickets against Uttar Pradesh at Palam A Ground. That meant they were second in Group A, behind Karnataka, while Suresh Raina’s men continued to languish second from last. The day began with UP on 223 for 7, after a security breach had ended the game early on the third evening. The loss of those 20 minutes and the associated momentum was amplified with the loss of overnight centurion Akshdeep Nath early the day when he got a thick inside edge to short midwicket off Navdeep Saini. The fast bowler then took two more wickets as UP were bowled out for 229, leaving Delhi little more than two sessions to get to the target. They lost Gautam Gambhir early when he slashed outside off and nicked to the wicketkeeper. Dhruv Shorey looked every bit as assured as he was in the first innings, and took charge in his partnership with Unmukt Chand. However, extra bounce did him in while he attempted one more of many cover drives on the up. He ended up scooping it to point. Unmukt and Nitish Rana, however, played calm knocks under pressure as they put up 71 to bring Delhi within 122 runs of victory with eight wickets in hand. But Unmukt and Rana were out for 49 and 67, leaving Delhi needing 65 in the final session.Milind Kumar, who had put together 52 with Rana, held one end up as Rishabh Pant took the bowlers on. As Delhi neared the target, UP slowed things down, with Ankit Rajpoot taking an injury break that lasted nearly six minutes. As if that was a warning sign to him, Pant skipped down the track against spinner Mohammad Saif in the next over and drilled him over long-on.The battle was won by the spinner, however, as he pushed one through Pant’s defend and forced him to play on. At this point, Delhi needed 28. Manan Sharma, who has been pushed into an all-round role for Delhi this season, made a nervous start and fell to a poke. With 21 to get, Delhi made a move that would ensure Milind wouldn’t have to switch gears, promoting Saini ahead of Pulkit Narang. The motive was visible as early as the second ball Saini faced as he looked to heave across the line against Rajpoot; it was a big edge that flew past the keeper for four.Saini walked down the track to bump fists with Milind, without bothering to look where the ball had gone. He slapped the fast bowler to the midwicket boundary the next over, and it was followed by a loft over mid-on from Milind as Delhi entered the half-hour extension needing two runs for a win. Saini got them with a clobbered six over long-on. The match was won and their campaign was alive.

Chelsea: Club Want Pochettino To Sign "Very Strong" Star

French side OGC Nice are hoping Chelsea make a move for goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel as a report from Europe shares some interesting news.

Who will Chelsea sign?

Mauricio Pochettino's side have been busy yet again this transfer window, having most recently beaten Liverpool to the signings of midfielders Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

These transfer victories display the pull Chelsea very much still possess in the transfer market, even despite a disastrous 2022/2023 campaign, with the duo joining a plethora of other signings at Stamford Bridge.

Indeed, Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi, Nicolas Jackson, Lesley Ugochukwu, Robert Sanchez, Angelo and young Brazilian ace Deivid Washington have also put pen to paper this window.

The aforementioned will come in to replace Kalidou Koulibaly, N'Golo Kante, Edouard Mendy, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Cesar Azpilicueta, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ethan Ampadu – who have all sealed moves elsewhere.

Chelsea's expenditure totals a seismic £267 million this window, with attention now turning to Pochettino and whether the Argentine can start making a success of owner Todd Boehly's reign.

Despite this series of investments, the Blues could yet make more signings.

Schmeichel, who was a mainstay for Nice last term following his 2022 exit from Leicester City, could apparently come in to bolster their goalkeeping options.

Mendy's move to Saudi Arabia and Arrizabalaga's temporary transfer to Real Madrid could mean that Chelsea need a proven back up to summer signing Sanchez from Brighton.

The Denmark international icon is apparently despite to leave Nice before deadline day, as explained by French news outlet Nice-Matin (via Sport Witness).

It is believed that Nice want Chelsea, or any other interested side for that matter, to make a move for Schmeichel who has now been demoted in their goalkeeping ranks.

The 36-year-old is so eager to leave the club, that he is "less demanding" in regard to his potential destination, meaning that Chelsea wouldn't face any problem in convincing the player to join.

How good is Kasper Schmeichel?

OGC Nice'sKasperSchmeichel

Schmeichel started 36 Ligue 1 games for Nice last term as their mainstay and number one goalkeeper, but these reports out of France indicate his future lies elsewhere.

The veteran 6 foot 2 keeper has vast Premier League experience, particularly at Leicester City, where he won the title, FA Cup and Community Shield during his time there.

Former Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers, heaping praise on Schmeichel for his importance at the King Power Stadium, claimed the keeper's mentality is "very strong".

"His devotion and mentality has really seen him excel at the highest level," said Rodgers on Schmeichel in 2021.

"He doesn't get tired every day of doing the right things and I can't speak highly enough of him

"He's super professional and loves training and pushes himself to the limit everyday. He's a great inspiration to the young goalkeepers, and the other players at the club, and he has some old school values, which I really like.

"His spirit is very strong and he wants to win. He's very, very competitive. He wants to win every game in training and he takes that into matches."

Celtic: Rodgers Eyeing Swoop To Sign £69k-p/w ‘Lukaku-like’ Marksman

An update has emerged on Celtic and their plans to bolster the playing squad before the end of the summer transfer window…

What's the latest Celtic transfer news?

According to FootballTransfers, the Hoops are one of the clubs eyeing up a swoop to sign West Ham United centre-forward Michail Antonio.

The report claims that English Championship side Leeds United are also in the market to land the Jamaica international as they look to improve their forward options.

It states that the former Sheffield Wednesday attacker is keen on a move away from the London Stadium but will not be allowed to leave until David Moyes is able to bring in a replacement.

There is no mention of exactly how much the Hammers would demand for his services but the outlet does state that the no.9 has one year left on his contract and would not command a significant fee.

How good is Michail Antonio?

Brendan Rodgers could finally replace Giorgos Giakoumakis for Celtic by securing a deal to sign Antonio before the deadline passes at the start of next month.

The Hammers marksman has proven himself to be a reliable Premier League goalscorer and could, therefore, thrive in the Scottish Premiership against lesser-quality opposition, given that England has the highest UEFA club coefficient – eight places ahead of Scotland.

Antonio has racked up ten top-flight strikes in three of his last four seasons and assisted 11 goals in those campaigns combined, whilst only Jota and Kyogo Furuhashi managed more than ten in the league last term for the Hoops.

West Ham's Kurt Zouma and Michail Antonio.

Giakoumakis scored 15 goals in 35 league games for the Bhoys and the West Ham powerhouse could produce a similar level of production at the top end of the pitch if the drop-down in quality allows him to improve upon his regular ten-goal hauls.

The Greek international moved on from Parkhead to sign for Atlanta United in February and the Hoops have been left with two senior centre-forward options since then – Kyogo and Hyeon-gyu Oh.

Giakoumakis provided the club with a different profile up front to complement Kyogo as the 28-year-old ace offered a level of physicality that the Japan international was unable to.

The former VVV-Venlo star came out on top in at least 1.1 aerial battles per match across his two Premiership seasons and won at least 51% of his battles in the air during that period, as per Sofascore.

Whereas, Kyogo, who stands at 5 foot 7, won 0.2 or fewer aerial contests per game over the 2021/22 and 2022/23 league campaigns and lost a whopping 87% of his duels in the air last term, also per Sofascore.

Antonio could replace the physicality that came with Giakoumakis as the English-born talent has won an impressive 2.4 aerial battles per outing over the course of his career, which shows that he is able to compete with opposition defenders when Celtic need an out ball to relieve pressure.

This suggests that the 33-year-old gem, who Brentford boss Thomas Frank claimed is "a handful" and is "a little bit like Lukaku", has the physical and goalscoring attributes to finally replace the Greek finisher at Paradise this season.

Antonio could be an excellent option to compete with Kyogo and Oh and the £69k-per-week bulldozer knows what it takes to be successful in Europe as the impressive forward scored six goals in seven Europa Conference League matches as his side won the competition last term.

United Interest In World Cup Winner "Very Concrete"

Manchester United's latest "priority" target "wants to go" to Old Trafford this summer, and with the club happy with his £82,000-a-week wages, the possibility of a deal is "very concrete", per transfers expert Fabrizio Romano.

Manchester United transfer news – what is the latest?

It's been an excellent summer for the United faithful so far this year.

The club have spent big yet again in a bid to back manager Erik ten Hag in his second year in charge of the team, and in doing so, they have seriously improved the squad.

First through the door was Chelsea star and former fan favourite Mason Mount, who joined the club in a deal worth £55m after a protracted transfer saga.

Read the latest Manchester United transfer news HERE…

Following the England international was Inter Milan's highly-rated Cameroon international Andre Onana. The keeper joined from the Champions League runners-up in a deal worth £47m, coming straight in as the club's new number one after the departure of David de Gea.

The latest big signing to make their way to the Theatre of Dreams was Danish wonderkid Rasmus Hojlund, who left Serie A side Atalanta for the Premier League in a deal worth £72m.

While that is already a pretty good summer's worth of incomings, it looks like the Red Devils want more, specifically in defence, as it seems increasingly likely that former captain Harry Maguire is on his way to West Ham United this summer.

The defender most heavily touted for a move to United recently has been Bayern Munich star and World Cup winner Benjamin Pavard.

And according to transfers expert Fabrizio Romano, the player is incredibly keen to make the move before the window shuts and has already informed the Bavarians of his intentions.

He explained the situation live on The United Stand's YouTube channel, saying:

"The Pavard deal is something very concrete in terms of the player's side at the moment because I am hearing that the player is really keen on joining Manchester United. He wants to get this opportunity to go to the Premier League to try new a chance; he knows also that Erik ten Hag is a big fan of his ability to play in different positions because Pavard can help as a full-back and not just as a centre-back and this is important for United to have a defensive full-back like Pavard into the squad, it could help in some crucial moments in the season.

"So the feedback between Pavard and United is excellent. The player wants to go, and also, Man United feel the conditions of the salary are correct. So, the agreement on personal terms is not a problem at all; it's about Bayern now.

"Man United approached Bayern Friday last week, and from Bayern, they were not really keen on the transfer of Benjamin Pavard because they still want to keep him. He's an important player for Tuchel. But, from what I am hearing during the weekend and even today [Monday], and I think this will continue, Pavard has been really clear with Bayern, with the board, with the manager he wants to go. He's not going to sign a new contract, his contract expires in summer 2024 and is not extending, and so he believes for both sides, player and for the club [this] is the best way to find a solution and to go to Man United.

"So Pavard is pushing for the move, let's see what happens between United and bayern. But for sure, this is the priority at the moment for Man United."

How old is Benjamin Pavard?

Born March 28th 1996, in Maubeuge, France, Pavard is 27 years old and has spent the last four and half seasons playing for Bayern and, unsurprisingly, winning the league every single year, as well as picking up the Champions League trophy in the summer of 2020.

He has been a brilliant player for the Bavarians over those four-and-a-half years, and it's easy to see why ten Hag is so keen to bring him to Old Trafford this summer.

In his 27 starts for the Bavarians last season, he found the back of the net on four occasions, provided one assist, took 1.1 shots per game, maintained a passing accuracy of 89.8%, won 2.1 aerials duals a game and picked up two Man-of-the-Match awards along the way, all while averaging a match rating of 7.17, per WhoScored.

benjamin-pavard-transfer-news-premier-league-man-united

His underlying numbers are also seriously impressive and suggest that the step-up to the Premier League shouldn't have too significant an impact on his output.

According to FBref, which compares players in a similar position across Europe's top five leagues, the £82,000-a-week man sits in the top 1% for attempted passes and progressive passes, the top 2% for total shots, expected assists and progressive passes received, the top 3% for non-penalty goals and shot-creating actions, and the top 4% for touches in the oppositions penalty area and non-penalty expected goals, all per 90.

Described as a "top team player" by manager Thomas Tuchel, if United can get this deal over the line, it would significantly improve the team both at full-back and centre-back and would represent brilliant business.

Man United Now "In Talks" With "Outstanding" 35 y/o Star

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has now provided a new update on whether he expects to sign Jonny Evans on a permanent deal this summer.

Who are Man United signing this summer?

Man United are still in the market for a new centre-back, and they have been in contact with Bayern Munich's Benjamin Pavard, with Ten Hag recently promising the Frenchman he would be a regular starter at Old Trafford, in a bid to win the race for his signature.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has detailed that the 27-year-old wants to link up with the Red Devils this summer, but they are keeping their options open, having recently made contact over a deal for OGC Nice's Jean-Clair Todibo.

United scouts have been sent to run the rule over the 23-year-old, but Pavard remains their "priority", and Ten Hag has recently claimed he is happy with the current options he has available.

In quotes relayed by Wales Online, the Dutchman expressed his contentment with Harry Maguire remaining at the club, after his move to West Ham United broke down, saying: "I am happy he is here, we need a good squad.

“We have four good centre-halves and including Luke Shaw we have five, and we need it because we are going to play 50-60 games this season. All the players are internationals so we have a lot of load to cover.

“I am happy Harry Maguire is here. He is going to have to fight for his position as does everyone in the squad."

Although he already has a number of centre-backs at his disposal, the 53-year-old has now confirmed that he is pursuing a permanent move for Evans, who signed a short-term contract in pre-season.

Ten Hag said: “In this moment, he is not (under contract) but we are talking. We will see. We are in talks and when we have news we will bring it.”

How old is Jonny Evans?

The former Leicester City defender is now 35-years-old, having had a distinguished career in the Premier League, making a total of 356 appearances in the competition, across spells with United, Sunderland, Leicester and West Bromwich Albion.

As such, the Northern Irishman will evidently not be a long-term addition to Ten Hag's squad, but his experience could be very useful in the dressing room, and he could be a decent option to have in the cup competitions.

United are set to have a busy fixture schedule this season, now they are back in the Champions League, so the 6 foot 2 defender could play in the early rounds of the EFL and FA Cup, if he is willing to accept a sporadic role in the squad.

Former Leicester centre-back Jonny Evans.

At the end of July, journalist Matthew Law urged the Red Devils to re-sign the centre-back, saying: "Would take Jonny Evans back for the season in an absolute heartbeat. Easy decision. Brilliant centre-back, a leader and a winner."

Lauded as "outstanding" by members of the media, Evans clearly did enough to impress the Man United boss in pre-season, and he could be a shrewd addition to the squad, should he be brought in on a one-year deal on low wages.

Everton Could Repeat Barry Horne Success With "Dynamic" £22m Gem

Everton managed to narrowly retain their infamous top-flight status last season and could be set to add sufficiently to once again avoid the dreaded drop…

Is Kamaldeen Sulemana joining Everton?

Especially given they have already made solid moves in the market already, welcoming Ashley Young and Arnaut Danjuma to bolster key areas, with Youssef Chermiti set to occupy the much-needed striker role too.

In returning for Villarreal's Dutch wide man, Toffees boss Sean Dyche showcased an ability to forget the past in order to capture those he has had a longstanding interest in.

Read the latest Everton transfer news HERE…

That would therefore explain their reported interest in Southampton's Kamaldeen Sulemana, who opted to move to St Mary's over Goodison Park in January.

Having since been relegated, Football Insider are now suggesting that the Merseyside outfit are once again in talks for his services, seeking to negotiate with the club that paid €25m (£22m) to tempt him last window,

How good is Kamaldeen Sulemana?

Whilst he could not offer enough across those six months to fire the Saints to safety, the 21-year-old livewire did provide a glimpse into the exceptional talents he can bring to English football.

After all, in his last full campaign in France, he posted eight goal contributions across all competitions, before scoring just twice across ten Premier League starts last season.

However, what the skilful winger did bring was far more than just his tangible goalscoring and assisting, as there are few on the continent as consistent when it comes to bypassing defenders with pace and trickery.

When compared to other wide men across Europe, he actually ranks in the top 1% for successful take-ons per 90, as well as the top 18% for interceptions per 90, via FBref.

He pairs electric running with a relentless work rate, as former coach Didi Dramani outlined him as someone capable of earning success in England:

"His strength is coming inside as a wide player. He is very dynamic in his movement, very unpredictable where he wants to go with either foot. When he is in space, he is basically unstoppable in one-on-one situations."

barry-horne

To once again look to Southampton whilst in the midst of a troublesome period for the club, having flirted with the drop for two seasons on the run now, perhaps such an acquisition could be reminiscent of their 1992 signing of Barry Horne.

The Welshman joined having endured a fairly uneventful career, and although his spell on Merseyside was hardly prolific, he did enjoy one particularly important moment that lives long in the memories of fans.

Welcoming AFC Wimbledon on the final day of the 1993/94 season, the Toffees knew that only a win would be enough to preserve their top-flight status.

So, when they found themselves 2-0 down, they likely feared the worst.

Graham Stuart halved the deficit from the spot, but as time ticked on they needed to pull a double from somewhere. Up stepped Horne, who thundered home from 30 yards to bring the scores level, setting up a grandstand finish. Stuart's second would seal the 3-2 win, as they were destined to feature in the Premier League once again.

He would even go on to win the club's 1995 Footballer of the Year award too, helping them win the FA Cup; their latest piece of silverware.

Should Sulemana prove half as heroic as the now 61-year-old Goodison legend, this would be a deal more than worth making, as the famous outfit seek to attain survival until they can make the triumphant move into the new stadium.
