Brathwaite and Shai Hope centuries hand West Indies control

Live scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAt Edgbaston, two completed innings from West Indies mustered 305 runs and neither lasted even 50 overs. On the second day at Headingley, one West Indies partnership added 246 runs in 68 overs as Kraigg Brathwaite and Shai Hope turned a promising revival with the ball into a full-blown resurgence.Brathwaite’s 134 was his sixth Test century, brought up from 189 balls with a six off Tom Westley in the final over before tea, while for Shai Hope – who took 159 deliveries – it was his first. After a lean start to his Test career, Hope’s century came three matches after his previous best of 90 and offered, dare we say, hope that the investment in him will bring long-term returns. The pair had come together inside the first hour of the day with West Indies 35 for 3 and the memories still fresh of the 19-wicket day last week.By the time England broke through, deep in the final session, when Broad burst through Brathwaite’s defence with the second new ball, West Indies were in the lead – the first time they had been ahead on first innings in England since Old Trafford in 2004 – and the partnership was West Indies’ biggest in England for more than 30 years, since Gordon Greenidge and Larry Gomes famously made David Gower regret his declaration at Lord’s in 1984.At the close, the lead stood at 71 with five wickets in hand. Ben Stokes had removed Roston Chase, edging a short delivery to first slip and there was the prospect of the fantastic work being undone. However, Jermaine Blackwood – whose idea of playing for the close was to continue to attack – ensured the day ended on a strong note. Hope’s unbeaten 147 was West Indies’ highest individual innings in England since Brian Lara’s 179 at The Oval in 1995.Until the new ball defeated him, Brathwaite’s 249-ball stay was a chanceless affair although he was twice grateful for DRS. On 34 he was given lbw to Broad but there had been an inside edge, while on 46 he was given the same way against Moeen Ali but was outside the line – one ball later he deposited Moeen into the stands for his fifty, the shot he would repeat a couple of hours later for the century. The team performance at Edgbaston brought much ridicule, but West Indies’ previous away Test had been a victory over Pakistan in Sharjah in which Brathwaite carried his bat for 142 in the first innings before marshalling the chase with an unbeaten 60 in the second. As the only member of the current squad with over 2000 Test runs, Brathwaite had already established his credentials at this level. The same could not said of Shai Hope who started this innings with an average under 20. However, he has been highly rated in the Caribbean since before his debut against England in 2015 and here that promise shone through. His fifty came from 72 balls with a strong straight drive against Chris Woakes and he came through Stokes’ attempts to unsettle him which included a hefty blow on the back of the helmet from a slippery bouncer. Ten minutes before tea, on 72, he flicked a delivery from Moeen to short leg but Mark Stoneman couldn’t cling on – it would have been an unfortunate way to go and West Indies’ effort deserved a few things to go their way.Whereas Brathwaite generally fed off short-of-a-length deliveries – of which England’s quicks offered up too many – Hope was eye-catching off the front foot (although his one-legged pull off Stokes to reach 99 was a reverse image of Lara). But for both the century-makers it was the early work in the morning session, when there was cloud cover and a new ball zipping around, that was most important to back up West Indies’ talk between matches that they had the batsmen to stand up to England in their conditions.England were off-colour with the ball; Broad struggled to consistently hit a full length (the sort that eventually dismissed Brathwaite) and after a promising first seven-over spell where he was unlucky not to pick up a wicket, Woakes looked more like a man making his way back into Test cricket after a lengthy lay-off.James Anderson was the pick of England’s bowlers and another bounty looked on the cards in the early forays of the day. He removed nightwatchman Devendra Bishoo in the fifth over of the day and then gave Kyle Hope another tough examination early in his Test career. A series of outswingers was followed by the inswinger, which brought the outside edge and Joe Root took a sharp catch at second slip. But for the rest of the day, Anderson remained stalled on 495 Test wickets, as did England’s hopes of forging a position from which they could take control of the match. That control, at least overnight, belonged to West Indies.

Aston Villa Could Sign Next El Ghazi In "Lethal" £15.5m Gem

Aston Villa are reportedly still interested in Galatasaray forward Nicolo Zaniolo, as Unai Emery continues to target the player.

The Villans were said to have interest in the Italian in June, when news in Italy linked the two parties with the winger said to also be attracting interest from Tottenham.

There has since been an update on the 24-year-old, as the Midlands side look to equip more star talent this summer.

What’s the latest on Nicolo Zaniolo to Aston Villa?

As reported in Italy (as relayed by Sport Witness), Zaniolo is ‘most prominently’ being followed by both Bayer Leverkusen and Villa.

Read the latest Aston Villa transfer news HERE…

It’s noted that Galatasaray are hoping to clarify the status of the versatile forward’s future quickly, with it claimed that he ‘continues to receive offers and interest’.

Valued by FootballTransfers around the €18m (£15.5m) mark, Monchi could deliver another masterclass in capturing the signature of the highly-rated Italian this summer.

How good is Nicolo Zaniolo?

Despite having a career tainted by injury, the attacker has continued to prove himself as being a star talent on his day both in Serie A and the Turkish Super Lig.

Having once been hailed as “superb” and described as a “lethal playmaker” by writer Zach Lowy, the 24-year-old has continued to show his worth despite being forced down several paths of bad luck in such early days of his career.

In 2020, the Italian suffered two anterior cruciate ligament injuries, recovering from one he sustained in January to suffer the same injury in September that dealt him a double blow of extended periods on the sidelines.

The versatile attacking midfielder struggled to become reintegrated into the side at Roma, however, found his feet again at Galatasaray, signing for the Turkish champions back in February.

Following his arrival, the Massa-born gem has made a fast impact for the Lions, scoring five goals in just 10 appearances, with only two coming from starts in the league, via Sofascore.

Deployed primarily as an attacking midfielder, the Italy international has been used in the past on the right flank with the ability to cut in on his favoured left foot to cause havoc.

In capturing Zaniolo, it wouldn’t be the first time that Villa Park has seen an electrifying wide player with the versatility to play across the field.

Labelled as “magnificent” by pundit Michael Brown, former Villa winger Anwar El Ghazi could have his dynamism on the right side replicated by the 24-year-old.

The two are similar in their approach to play, as supported by the numbers recorded by Zaniolo in his previous consistent season in Serie A and by the former Villa man in his final Premier League campaign in England.

As per FBref, in the 2021/22 Serie A term, the former Roma whiz averaged 2.56 successful take-ons and 3.97 progressive carries per 90, similar numbers to the Dutchman who recorded an average of 2.79 progressive carries and 1.45 successful take-ons per 90 in claret and blue.

While El Ghazi has moved on to pastures new with PSV, his energy and potency in the final third will be remembered at Villa Park, with the reported target having the ability to bring such attributes.

With significant interest listed in the player, Monchi and Emery must act fast if they are serious about obtaining the Italian maestro.

West Indies ready for 'momentous' Lord's encounter

Jason Holder hopes West Indies can feed off their victory in the second Test and continue to defy expectations in the series decider at Lord’s

Melinda Farrell06-Sep-20173:24

‘I’m glad to be here with him’ – the Hope brothers on playing together for West Indies

Few would have predicted a decider at Lord’s after the thrashing at Edgbaston but West Indies captain Jason Holder believes the confidence born out of their performance at Headingley could lift his side to victory in a “momentous” match.Only two members of this West Indies squad – Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel – have played a Test at the home of cricket, adding to the sense of occasion for Holder’s men.”It’s obviously a momentous game for everybody,” Holder said, speaking at Lord’s on the eve of the match. “Especially in our group. A number of us are playing our first Test match here at Lord’s, our first series in England. There’s a lot to play for, and our guys are really up for it.”West Indies haven’t won a Test series in England for 29 years but go into the final match having beaten their opponents in two of their last three Tests (going back to Barbados in 2015). Victory at Headingley was West Indies’ first in England in 17 years and further history beckons. It is a rare challenge for Holder, still relatively callow in his captaincy. In some ways, his side has already surpassed expectations and inspired hope for the future. Should they acquit themselves well at Lord’s, no matter the result, they will have gained the respect of many who perhaps underestimated their qualities. But they would gain so much more with victory.”It would be great to win the series in England, but there’s a process towards going about that,” Holder said. “We can’t focus on the end result.”Our focus is our process. I spoke about consistency a lot on this tour, and that’s the main objective for me. Once we’re consistent and do the small things well, that end result should be more or less in our favour.”There have been unforeseen and unfortunate distractions in the build-up to the final Test. Bowling coach Roddy Estwick has returned to Barbados after the death of his mother and in his absence former Middlesex, Sussex and Yorkshire swing bowler Paul Hutchison has temporarily stepped into the role. Holder hopes Hutchison’s local knowledge will prove invaluable.Shai Hope chats with Brian Lara during West Indies training•Getty Images

“We’ve tried to get as much information as possible coming into this game,” Holder said. “We’ve got the luxury of having an outsider, Paul Hutchison, give us some tips about how to bowl here at Lord’s. He’s had some experience of bowling here at Lord’s.”There’s a lot of talk about the slope and such and we’ve studied it and had a chance to formulate some plans about how we go it. But cricket is always played on the day. You may be faced with different dilemmas and you just have to adjust and cope with it. That’s the nature of professional sport.”The threat of devastation from Hurricane Irma throughout the Caribbean has also loomed large in the thoughts of the players, particularly for Antiguan Alzarri Joseph, whose island was originally feared to be in the direct path of the storm.”I understand it hasn’t done major damage to Antigua, where Alzarri is from,” Holder said. “It’s gone further up north. We just hope the islands it is going to affect, the people prepare well and hopefully they are not hurt too badly.”We send our prayers back home, we have everybody back home in our thoughts and prayers. There’s not much we can do from here but sit and pray and wish them all the best.”West Indies declined to name a team before the toss, deciding to take another look at the pitch. It will, no doubt, have surprised them to see it displaying odd markings, known as ‘fairy rings’, caused by fungus spores below the turf. One perfect ring sits just short of a length for batsmen at the Pavilion End – perfectly positioned as a ‘bullseye’ for short balls coming from the Nursery End.But who will bowl them for West Indies remains unclear. It could be the case that Devendra Bishoo misses out on the final Test – he bowled 31 overs at Headingley, compared to the 44 bowled by Roston Chase – giving West Indies the option of including an extra seamer. Miguel Cummins and Joseph played in the first Test at Edgbaston while Raymon Reifer was particularly impressive in the nets at Lord’s on Wednesday. But whoever walks out at Lord’s will have the opportunity to create their own history, the challenge put to them by their coach, Stuart Law, at the start of the series. Some have already done so, with Shai Hope becoming the first batsman to score two centuries in a first-class match at Headingley. But, for a team which – more than any other international side – seems to have the ghosts of the past constantly hovering, making history at Lord’s would quieten talk of past legends and garner hope that last week’s victory was no false dawn.”It has done a lot,” Holder said of the Headingley win. “The first game, pretty much everybody wrote us off. Our heads were a bit down after how we got defeated in the first Test match.”To pick ourselves back up and come back and respond how we did at Headingley was remarkable. It’s obviously given us some new life. We’ve got a chance to win this series so we are going out in this last Test match to win it.”

PSG’s £259m Star Issues Transfer Response To Saudi Links

The Kylian Mbappe transfer saga, which seems to take place every summer in the transfer window’s version of Christmas, has taken yet more twists and turns in recent days, with Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal blowing things more open than ever. The Frenchman, frozen out at Paris Saint-Germain and left out of their pre-season tour of Japan, has found himself in somewhat of a standoff with the Ligue 1 club. Either he leaves now, or he signs a new contract, is the reported stance of the club. There is no option to simply see out his contract, and leave in amicable fashion on a free deal next summer, according to reports. So, here we are. Two stubborn parties, both with hands at the ready, waiting to fire the first, and deciding shot in a saga that continues to drag.It seems as though even record-breaking money won’t change Mbappe’s position on the matter, too, speaking out for the first time since the Al-Hilal reports.

Kylian Mbappe issues first transfer response

Taking to Twitter to speak for the first time since the transfer rumours, Mbappe responded to a Tweet from basketball star Giannis Antetokounmpo, which read: “Al Hilal you can take me. I look like Kylian Mbappe.”

The star striker couldn’t help but respond to Antetokounmpo, Tweeting out a number of laughing emojis.

The response almost highlights the elephant in the room, as Mbappe somewhat acknowledges the rumours, without, of course, providing his answer.

Leaving football on the biggest cliffhanger of the transfer window so far, Mbappe certainly has a big decision to make.

In a potential clue over the striker’s future, sources told Relevo that Al-Hilal’s bid and PSG’s stance doesn’t change things for Mbappe, saying: “These things do nothing but reinforce the determination of the player, who has a year on his contract that cannot be ignored.

“If he has to stay on the bench, he will stay, we’ll see how long because the Champions League arrives right away… If they are winning, then everything is fine, but how do you have a player like that in the stands if things are not going well.”

How much did Al-Hilal bid for Kylian Mbappe?

According to Fabrizio Romano, PSG have accepted a bid of €300m (£258.27m) from Al-Hilal to sign their want-away forward. Meanwhile, as per James Benge of CBS, the Saudi Arabian club have offered Mbappe €700m (£602.63m) over the course of the season, in what is an eye-watering amount.

It remains to be seen whether the Frenchman accepts the deal or not, but if he does, the breakdown of his wages will be truly staggering.

As per TalkSport, Mbappe would earn €58.33m (£50.22m) a month, €13.3m (£11.45m) a week, and €1.9m (£1.64m) per day.

That also works out to be €79.9k (£68.79) an hour.

It will speak volumes if Mbappe rejects such an offer to stay at PSG, who will be left in the frustrating position of facing the prospect of losing their star man for free next summer.

In the battle between the two parties, it’s hard to see right now just who will come out on top at the end of it all.

Crystal Palace: Hodgson now eyeing huge in-house agreement

All of the news surrounding Crystal Palace currently relates to the loss of Wilfried Zaha and understandably so. As a result, attentions now turn to the future of key attacking duo Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze.

Will Eberechi Eze Remain at Selhurst Park?

Every year, Zaha was linked with a move away only to stay put in South London. When he did eventually move on, it was on a free transfer and so the Palace faithful will hope that Eze doesn’t follow suit.

Talking of Eze’s contractual situation and his £30k-a-week deal will expire in two years' time, hence the desire to strike a new agreement. His exploits for the England national team will only see his stock rise higher to the point that bigger clubs who can offer bigger wages will come calling.

When asked a couple of months ago if he is playing the best football of his life though, as per the Evening Standard, the former Queens’ Park Rangers man had this to say: “Yeah probably. I feel like I’ve got the freedom to play, to do my thing. I’m just happy to be enjoying my football.”

This points towards his short-term future remaining at Crystal Palace, a club who he enjoys playing for. That being said, the departure of Zaha and lack of any fierce summer recruitment may have Eze nervous of the relegation zone looming again.

What is Alex Crook's update on Eberechi Eze?

He had this to say when talking to Give Me Sport:

“They want to tie Eze down to a new contract, but I’m not sure he’s going to be keen to commit his future yet. I think he believes that he’s going to get interest as well.”

It stands to reason that the club would be wanting to offer the 25-year-old a new deal given just how significant an impact he made last season. Not only did Eze reach his highest return of Premier League minutes to date but he contributed more goals and assists than the two seasons before combined. Eze appeared in every single league outing and across those games he amassed 10 goals and four assists, including some box office moments.

Who Could Join Crystal Palace Ahead of the New Season?

There is only one new arrival at Selhurst Park at the time of writing in the form of Jefferson Lerma. The midfielder arrived from AFC Bournemouth on a free transfer and is likely to be a very solid option in that area which is regularly occupied by Malian international Cheick Doucouré.

One name that has been heavily linked, as per Caught Offside, is Perr Schuurs. Palace are reportedly ahead of fellow Londoners West Ham United in their pursuit of the Dutch defender who currently plies his trade in Italy. The 23-year-old arrived in Turin just last year after a strong few seasons with Ajax. Regarding the fee and the whole process, “talks are at an advanced stage with [the] £34m-rated” centre-back, though it remains to be seen as to whether anything will get done.

Kent, Hampshire invited for WI Regional Super50

Kent and Hampshire have been invited to take part in West Indies’ Regional Super50 competition, the domestic one-day tournament, which is set to take place early next year ahead of the start of the 2018 English season. If the offer is taken up, it will be the second successive year Kent have been part of the competition. They finished third in Group A during the 2016-17 tournament with three wins from their eight matches.Last year’s edition started in late January and if either county did take part it would require a month-long stay in the Caribbean which would come with significant associated costs. The region has become a regular feature on the pre-season scene for English counties. There could be a significant presence for English cricketers in the Caribbean ahead of the 2018 English summer with the Lions touring for four-day and one-day series against West Indies A in February and March.

Leeds: Phil Hay worried about striker situation

With Leeds United about to embark on their first season in the Championship for four years, journalist Phil Hay is worried about where the goals will come from and who can be Daniel Farke's Teemu Pukki in white.

Leeds United transfer news

Before the dust had even settled on the Peacocks' relegation from the Premier League last season, players started looking for a way out of the club, and after Sam Allardyce was shown the door, it didn't take long for some of the first team to follow him.

So far, the club have sent four players out on loan, including recent signings Rasmus Kristensen, Brenden Aaronson, and Marc Roca. That number could soon be five as Maximilian Wober looks likely to join Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach in the coming days.

That said, the club still, at this point anyway, possess a decent lineup of attacking wide players, such as William Gnonto, Luis Sinisterra, Crysencio Summerville, and Jack Harrison.

patrick-bamford-leeds-united-academy-mateo-joseph-allardyce

However, whilst those players are certainly good enough for the Championship, the options at striker of Patrick Bamford and Gerorginio Rutter could be a problem and don't fill Phil Hay with a great deal of confidence going into the new season.

He explained his feelings on the situation on The Square Ball YouTube channel:

"I do still find myself asking, 'Who is going to be his Teemu Pukki in this team? Who is going to score 20-plus goals? I'm not looking at either Rutter through the middle or Patrick Bamford through the middle and thinking you've got a dead cert there for 20-plus in the season to come.

"I would also say, and I think you're right here, that while they're well served out wide with options, and they definitely are. I'm not sure that there is somebody who is perfectly suited to that central creative role."

Who have Leeds United been linked to?

With the striking situation looking a little worrying, have the club been linked to anyone that could come in and help move the club forward this season?

Well, the good news is that, according to WalesOnline, Leeds have made contact with fellow Championship side Swansea City over their free-scoring Dutch centre-forward Joel Piroe.

The Welsh publication has revealed that the player has refused to sign a new contract with the Swans and that because of this, his valuation could be lower than the £20m it was last summer.

While the 23-year-old isn't currently the Whites 'primary focus', he would be an excellent purchase due to his proficiency in the second tier over the last two seasons.

joel-piroe-swansea-city-leeds-united-transfer-gossip-farke-rodrigo-qatar

In his first year in English football, the 6 foot 1 dynamo scored 22 goals and provided six assists in just 40 starts. He followed that up by scoring 19 goals and providing two assists last season in just 43 starts.

So far, the Dutchman has 49 goal involvements in his 7293 minutes of Championship football for the Welsh club, meaning he has produced a goal involvement every 148 minutes, or once every one and a half games or so.

While it might not quite be as prolific as Pukki was for Norwich City in the 2020/21 and 2018/19 seasons, it's still massively impressive and would give the rest of the team an excellent base upon which to build.

If Leeds can get this deal done, it could go a long way in easing Hay's concerns.

'It's been wonderful talking to you' – Henry Blofeld signs off

Henry Blofeld, the Test Match Special commentator, signed off after nearly 50 years behind the microphone with the words “how lovely”

Andrew McGlashan09-Sep-2017Henry Blofeld, the commentator, signed off after nearly 50 years behind the microphone with the words “how lovely” and was given a standing ovation from the Lord’s crowd before embarking on a lap of honour when the final Test concluded.Blofeld, 77, announced earlier this year that this would be his final season in the commentary box as, “I can’t see as well as I used to… it’s better to go when people are prepared to clap you.” His final stint on air came as England closed in on their target to take the series against West Indies and shortly before the winning runs he signed off for the final time.”I’ve got no last word because handing over to next commentator has always been an adventure for me,” he said. “That ladies and gentleman is the end of it. It’s been wonderful talking to you. I will miss you something dreadful, I must try not to fall over when I hand over to the next commentary who I think is going to be Ed Smith. How lovely.”The Lord’s crowd, many of who were listening on earpieces, rose and gave an extended ovation as Blofeld moved out of his seat in a packed TMS commentary box.Speaking a short while later to he said: “I’m 78 next week – or is it the week after – and I don’t think I see as well as I did. You can only get worse so perhaps it’s better to go when people are prepared to clap you. It’s been a huge amount of fun. Some people call it work, it’s been terrific. I really, really have loved my life.”During his broadcasting career, Blofeld worked in television as well as radio although it was his long association with that cemented his status. His commentary – including his most well-known phrase, “my dear old thing” – was often interspersed with references to London buses or the various types of birds spotted around the grounds. He was invited into the England dressing after they had secured the series victory and presented with a signed shirt by Joe Root”What a credit he is to the game, I’m quite emotional speaking about it actually,” Root said. “It’s going to be strange listening to the radio and not hearing him commentating on not just the cricket but the rest that comes with it. He’ll be sorely missed by the players and I’m sure the public as well.”

Nottingham Forest: Cooper Could Sign "Machine" In £20m Swoop

Nottingham Forest are reportedly interested in Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams, as Steve Cooper eyes quality reinforcements this summer.

The Welshman must welcome additional resources to his side, who struggled on their return to the Premier League last season, leaving it until the penultimate game of the calendar to confirm their safety.

With the opening game against Arsenal fast approaching, it’s time for Cooper to weigh up his squad options with the ability to dip into the market before it closes.

What’s the latest on Tyler Adams to Nottingham Forest?

As reported back in June by the Mail, Forest emerged as one of the clubs interested in Adams, who suffered a demotion with Leeds last season.

The American was said to be ‘one of the names’ Cooper was considering moving for, with the 24-year-old having a £20m relegation release clause in his contract at Elland Road.

More recently, however, news has suggested that the Reds should expect competition for the midfielder, with transfer guru Fabrizio Romano confirming Chelsea’s desire to make contact with the player.

How good is Tyler Adams?

Having been hailed as a “machine” by journalist Wes Rucker, the USMNT international made quite the impact during his debut season in the Premier League, asserting himself as a rock in Leeds’ midfield.

Despite his debut campaign ending bitterly in relegation, the American midfielder prevailed as one of the Whites’ brightest individuals, hence the increased interest surrounding the 24-year-old’s services.

Obtaining a talent as combative and thorough as Adams could be one of the elements fundamental to take Cooper’s side to the next level, and cementing their status as a top-flight club, moving away from being on the fence between the Premier League and Championship.

The New York-born star showcased the roundedness of his game, and his complete skill set in what it takes to be a top performer in the engine room in England.

Maintaining a pass completion rate of 82.5% per 90, as well as averaging an impressive 5.68 progressive passes per 90 last campaign for Leeds, via FBref, the midfielder is an assured presence in possession and a strong link to transitioning play from defence to attack.

Leeds' Tyler Adams

For Forest, Adams could bolster the options on show at the City Ground in such a crucial area, with the youngster having the potential to take the place of some veterans in the position.

Signed in January from Newcastle United, Jonjo Shelvey had all the ingredients to be the reliable source in the midfield to help Forest coast towards safety, however, the Englishman had the opposite effect.

Making just six starts in the league, the 31-year-old dud was kept away from the action after reacting poorly for not being in the line-up against Liverpool in April and has since been segregated from the first team.

The Essex-born midfielder has been excluded from the club’s pre-season festivities, with all signs leading to a City Ground exit, leaving room for a new face to take his place.

Adams is more recently a better performer than the former Newcastle, who fell short in terms of averages per 90 to the American, based on his figures for Leeds last term and Shelvey’s numbers for the Magpies in the 2021/22 campaign.

As per FBref, the 24-year-old averaged an impressive 3.72 tackles and 1.46 interceptions per 90 for the Whites, as well as averaging 1.00 key passes per 90 to highlight his attacking prowess amid his defensive security.

Shelvey averaged 1.36 tackles and 1.00 interceptions for Newcastle in 2021/22, recording 0.73 key passes per 90, via FBref, making Adams’ claim to replace him at Forest a particularly unquestionable one.
