Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla’s relationship a positive omen for Dani Ceballos

[ad_pod ]

Is Dani Ceballos the midfielder Arsenal have been missing since Santi Cazorla set foot on the Emirates turf?

It’s a hard question to answer, especially so soon into the new Premier League campaign.

Ceballos has had an impressive start to his temporary stay in north London, turning in a display Cazorla arguably would have been proud of against Burnley.

He claimed two assists, had three shots, managed four dribbles and also achieved a pass success of 90% per WhoScored.

It was a magnificent display and typified what his Spanish predecessor brought to N5.

Cazorla was influential for Arsenal, scoring in an FA Cup final and winning the club’s Player of the Season award after a season in 2012/13 where he scored 12 and assisted 14.

Now 34, he is plying his trade at Villarreal after a horrible foot injury which nearly caused him to lose a limb.

A skin graft was taken from his arm and thankfully he’s now back fit and he’s even been in the Spain squad.

Long gone are his days at Arsenal, however, and there is now a new kid on the block.

After that game against Burnley, the comparisons between Ceballos and Cazorla were out in full force.

The similarities between the two are clear to see but what does this hold for another of Arsenal’s creative outlets, Mesut Ozil?

It might be that playing in a number ten position, the 23-year-old can allow Ozil his off days and ensure there isn’t a lack of creativity when he’s absent.

But can they play together? Assessing the German’s record when playing alongside Cazorla would be a good place to start.

Unai Emery has preferred a more defensive nature behind the forward line in his midfield since arriving at Arsenal and the fact Matteo Guendouzi, Lucas Torreira and Granit Xhaka all started a home match against Huddersfield last term sums that up.

But to give the Gunners a more dynamic approach in their new-look side, Emery could field Ozil at 10 and Ceballos as a deep-lying playmaker.

The former Germany international’s record alongside Cazorla is quite something and the fact they picked up 2.11 points per match is mightily impressive.

For those that have played alongside Ozil at Arsenal on more than ten occasions, only four individuals, Rob Holding, Lukas Podolski, Bacary Sagna and Mohamed Elneny have a better point per game ratio, although none have come close to matching the same number of games.

In 89 matches together, Ozil and Cazorla lost just 17 times as 175 goals were scored, per Transfermarkt.

The same source states that they only combined three times together for a goal but with the two in the team, Ozil scored 20 goals and claimed 30 assists.

Cazorla, on the other hand, racked up 11 strikes and laid on 19 goals for his teammates.

Those numbers make for impressive reading and how well the team did with a player like the Spaniard behind Ozil could be a sign of things to come.

Of course, it’s difficult to suggest Ceballos will have the same impact but judging by the way the two compare, there are reasons to suggest Arsenal could thrive with him and Ozil in the same side.

Cazorla’s final game for Arsene Wenger’s side was against Ludogorets. Rather typically, he and the World Cup winner were in fine form.

Ozil scored a hat-trick and got an assist in a 6-0 win whilst the former also set a goal up.

This was at a time when the ex-Real Madrid man was at the top of his game, however.

Now, he’s a peripheral figure in Emery’s side, initially being left out of the team at the start of the new season because of security reasons.

If he can get back to his best, then it will be fascinating to see whether he’s picked alongside Ceballos.

So far he’s played directly behind the strikers but if the Cazorla comparisons stick, selecting him in a deeper role could be of great benefit to Arsenal.

The highest number of assists from a single Gunners player in 2018/19 was just eight.

On that evidence, more creativity is needed. Ozil and Ceballos could well be the ones to provide that.

Take a look behind the curtain at England's 1966 triumph in rare photos

The year of 1966 remains the greatest year in English footballing history.

Victory over West Germany in the final, 4-2 after extra time, is the biggest, most famous, most memorable game in the country’s long-standing relationship with the beautiful game and until it is achieved again will remain that way.

Everyone has seen the iconic photo of Bobby Moore being held aloft with the Jules Rimet trophy at Wembley following the triumph.

But what many people will not have seen is some of the lesser publicised photos from what was a marvelous year for the Three Lions.

This gallery looks at some of the behind-the-scenes snaps taken from that year – mainly involving the frenzy that went on during that wonderful summer in July – but also from before the tournament and what happened following the final on July 30th 1966.

And we start with the legendary Bobby Charlton taking some time out of a pre-tournament training session to relax on the grass and chat with a few idolising fans…

Real Madrid will be pleased with Dani Carvajal’s performance for Spain

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Life hasn’t really been easy for Dani Carvajal at Real Madrid as of late.

The 27-year-old right-back has been one of the main targets of the recent outburst from the fans as many seem to think he is one of the biggest liabilities in Real Madrid’s defensive line.

Many called for him to improve as he was dragging the team down but his latest performance will definitely please Zinedine Zidane and Real Madrid’s fans.

Spain played Faroe Islands in the sixth round of the Euro qualifications and Carvajal started the game on the right side of their defence. Needless to say, the 27-year-old showed the whole repertoire of his skills and proved why he’s a starter at Real Madrid.

Carvajal was heavily involved throughout the 90 minutes as he mustered a total of 120 touches. He was efficient and deadly going forward, tallying two key passes, four accurate crosses and 94% passing accuracy overall.

But he was also no slouch in the defensive aspect, an area that Real Madrid seem to be lacking in at the moment. He recorded one tackle, won possession four times, won all of his aerial duels while also winning 3/4 ground ones. By anyone’s standards, that was an impressive display at both ends of the field.

Now, however, it would be ideal if he could somehow transfer that form back into the Spanish capital once the clubs return to action later on in the week.

So far, he has averaged one tackle and 0.5 interceptions in the new 2019/20 La Liga campaign with, granted, one assist to his name. But when everything is said and done, Real Madrid have conceded four goals in three games and have dropped four points in total, and a part of that blame certainly lies with their defenders.

Despite some good results on occasion, there’s still a lot left to be desired from those performances. But Carvajal proved on international duty that he’s still very much got it and only needs time to find his groove once again.

It will be up to Zidane to help him rediscover that form and get the best out of his right-back by any means necessary.

Celtic fans react as Odsonne Edouard picks up Player of the Month award

Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard was named the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership Player of the Month for August on Tuesday.

The talented striker has been in blistering form for the Hoops so far this season.

In August, on the opening day of the season at home, he scored one and created two in the 7-0 thrashing of St Johnstone and bagged another in the 5-2 victory over Motherwell at Fir Park.

Edouard has turned into a fans’ favourite with the Parkhead faithful and he has recently declared how happy he is to be playing his football and living in Glasgow.

His recent form has been so good that he was called up the French U21 team where he continued his scoring exploits during the international break, netting four times in just two appearances.

Celtic fans will be hoping that they will get to enjoy watching Edouard strut his stuff in the famous Hoops for some time to come.

Here’s how they reacted to him winning the Scottish Premiership’s Player of the Month award for August…

Barcelona fans slam Luis Suarez’s performance vs Borussia Dortmund

Barcelona’s big Champions League trip to Borussia Dortmund ended in a 0-0 draw on Tuesday evening.

Ernesto Valverde acknowledged that his players had problems containing their hosts at Signal Iduna Park while facing the famous Yellow Wall.

But when everything is said and done, there was one player, in particular, that didn’t really live up to expectations and who failed to impress the fans.

Luis Suarez started the encounter and endured a difficult night, registering just one shot on target and a pass success rate of 70%, the lowest of any Barca player to start the game.

The fans were pretty quick to notice his below-par display and they jumped to social media and Twitter to criticise him.

Many of them demanded that the club bench the Uruguayan and even called his display “embarrassing” while decrying him as “utterly useless” as a striker.

You can see some of their rough replies and comments in the collection of tweets down below.

West Ham fans drool over Issa Diop’s performance against Man United

[ad_pod ]

Issa Diop played the full 90 minutes as West Ham United recorded a 2-0 win over Manchester United in Sunday’s Premier League clash at the London Stadium.

Andriy Yarmolenko sent the Hammers into the lead in the 44th minute, before Aaron Cresswell secured all three points in the 84th minute with a rasping free kick.

The win was West Ham’s third in the Premier League this season, which has left them in fifth position in the table on 11 points.

And it would be fair to say that a number of the club’s fans were impressed by what they saw from Diop in the English capital.

According to WhoScored, the 22-year-old won three aerial duels and boasted a pass success rate of 85% during a strong performance.

United only managed three shots on target during the 90 minutes, meanwhile, and the West Ham fans absolutely loved Diop’s contributions on the afternoon.

Tottenham fans think Jose Mourinho wouldn’t work under Daniel Levy

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Tottenham Hotspur fans on Twitter have dismissed the idea that Jose Mourinho would consider replacing Mauricio Pochettino if he left, following another disastrous result on Tuesday.

The north London outfit fell to a shock penalty shoot-out defeat to League Two side Colchester United in the third round of the Carabao Cup despite having a starting XI containing Eric Dier, Dele Alli, Davinson Sanchez and Lucas Moura, and it came on the back of poor displays against Olympiacos and Leicester City.

Spurs supporters on the popular social media platform called for Mourinho to be appointed following the latter, and that sentiment surely would have only been reinforced having been knocked out of the cup by a side playing three leagues below them.

However, many other Tottenham fans have moved to dampen any suggestions that the 56-year-old former Manchester United and Chelsea man could work under Daniel Levy and ENIC, mainly due to the financial restraints he could find himself under.

While one supporter said “he won’t work under Levy”, another said “he would never work for Levy and the way he runs the club”.

Tottenham fans concerned with Tanguy Ndombele fitness after Bayern Munich match

There are a lot of concerns for Tottenham after their heavy defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday, but some fans noticed one worry which could lead to more defeats in future.

Namely, that is the fitness of new signing Tanguy Ndombele, who has otherwise had a good start to his career in north London, and impressed some with his performances and two goals in and one assist in five league matches.

Despite that, the visit of Bayern Munich showed a flaw in his game currently, and many fans noticed that he grew tired far too quickly, resulting in him struggling to keep up with the pace of the game.

One fan put that down to the fact that his career to date has been spent in France, where the game is slower and less intense – so now he is facing the task of building up his stamina in order to get up to speed.

Here is some of the reactions from fans who believe he tired far too quickly.

Charlton: Crystal Palace proved there is greater prize in developing Chelsea prospects

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher is currently thriving at Charlton under Lee Bowyer’s tutelage.

The 19-year-old has scored four goals in ten Championship starts – he has also grabbed one assist.

Gallagher also won the EFL Young Player of the Month award for August, hitting an eye-catching run of form that has not gone unnoticed.

The teenager has received a maiden England U21 call-up for his efforts, while a significant figure in Chelsea’s Claude Makelele has popped down to south London to receive an update on the midfielder from Charlton.

Bowyer revealed that the Blues are “delighted” with how Gallagher is developing at The Valley, and their efforts in aiding the Englishman’s development could land them more benefits than just his fine showings on the pitch – just ask their south London rivals Crystal Palace.

“I think he’s even surprised Chelsea. I don’t think they knew how far he could go so soon. They had people come in on Thursday. Makelele came in to speak to us about the loan, how Conor is getting on, their thoughts on him and they’re delighted.”

The Eagles performed a similarly fine task when taking Ruben Loftus-Cheek on loan for the 2017/18 season, where the midfielder enjoyed an excellent campaign that saw him secure a seat on Gareth Southgate’s plane for the 2018 World Cup.

It was a development Roy Hodgson cited as one that strengthened relations between Palace and Chelsea, and one that the 72-year-old also revealed was a key factor in the Eagles landing Michy Batshuayi on loan ahead of other clubs.

Back in January, Tottenham and West Ham were keen on the Belgium international, but were quoted £8m and £4m respectively by the Blues if they wanted to take the 26-year-old on loan, as The Independent reveal here.

Tellingly, Chelsea then allowed Palace to have Batshuayi for just £1m, mainly due to the good relationship between the two sides, as Hodgson revealed.

“A lot of it has to do with the relationship with Chelsea and Crystal Palace, Chelsea people and our chairman, Steve Parish. I thought we did a very good job last year with for Chelsea with Ruben Loftus-Cheek, he did a great job for us, we didn’t exactly send him back as a worse player or a player with less value, I think that stands in our favour.”

Charlton will of course benefit on the pitch from seeing Gallagher come on leaps and bounds, but Palace have proved that there may be even more bonuses in store for the Addicks if they can keep Chelsea happy.

Sunderland fans share their candidates to replace Jack Ross

Loads of Sunderland fans have been giving their verdicts on who should replace Jack Ross, and there are two names cropping up more than any others.

Well, there you have it. After what seemed like an eternity of drab draws and disappointing displays, Sunderland have sacked the former St. Mirren boss.

Ross lost the fans some time ago if truth be told, and it felt like the clock had been ticking since the playoff final defeat back in May.

The club announced the decision on their official site on Tuesday afternoon, much to the delight of fans, and the attention has of course now turned to who should come in.

The club currently sit 6th in League One with 19 points, a whopping eight off the top but only four off second place and automatic promotion.

With a squad boasting some proven third-tier stars like Will Grigg, one would think they will become one of the favourites for promotion if the right man is brought in.

With that in mind, it is quite surprising to see some of the names in the mix, though the popular picks seem to be Daniel Stendel and Roy Keane.
