Agni Chopra smashes first-class record with centuries in first four games

Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s son has made a splash in the Ranji Trophy Plate League

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Feb-2024Agni Chopra has become the first batter to score centuries in his first four first-class games after making his debut for Mizoram in the Ranji Trophy Plate League earlier this month. Chopra, 25, is the son of film critic Anupama Chopra and filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who recently made the popular movie (KC Cariappa) and Mohit Jangra,” he told PTI. “They are inclusive and welcoming and I never felt like an outsider. I have been taught a few Mizo words and phrases and I don’t feel in a vastly different place.”Chopra admits that moving from Mumbai to Mizoram in the domestic circuit would not have been a lateral move and the bowling attacks in the Plate League would not be the same. While the top 32 teams in the domestic circuit play in four groups of the Elite League, six other teams, five of which are from the north-east region, feature in the Plate League. He says his current aim is to help Mizoram qualify for the Plate League final, which will promote them to the Elite League next season.”People will say what they have to say but, at the end of the day, it’s your performance and there are lot many players who are playing in the same division and not scoring that many runs. The standard is same for everyone.”I think I am trying to be in present and my aim is to take Mizoram to Elite division. If we are in Elite division, then there is nothing to think about in terms of quality of bowling and I will play for Mizoram.”

Chopra had decided not to follow in the footsteps of his father, who has been directing and writing Hindi movies for over 30 years and has delivered a number of hits like , and its sequel .”So I have been asked this question from childhood that will you go into movies but I never thought I would ever be in movies,” he said. “I never thought that, ‘oh, I should get in because my dad makes movies and it will be an easy avenue for me’.”I was never interested in movies. I mean I love watching movies and have a great time but it was never my passion.”Chopra says the career advice his father instead gave him was to pick anything and strive to be the best in it.”My dad told me and my sister when we were younger what his father told him: ‘. (If you want to become a cobbler, be the best cobbler in your street).”He gave us freedom to do what we wanted but told us to try to be the absolute best. Talent can only take you that far, as the rest depends on the work you do and I saw that in his movies. The amount of work my father and my mother put in their professions, I saw that it rubbed off on me.”

KL Rahul in London to consult a specialist for injury, set to miss Dharamsala Test

It is understood that Lucknow Super Giants are aware of his progress and are optimistic about his availability in the IPL

Nagraj Gollapudi28-Feb-2024KL Rahul is set to miss the final Test of the England series which starts in Dharamsala from March 7. ESPNcricinfo has learned Rahul is currently in London to consult a specialist for the quadricep tendon injury that ruled him out from second, third and fourth Tests against England after he played the series opener in Hyderabad. It is understood that his IPL team Lucknow Super Giants are aware of his progress and are optimistic about his availability in the tournament which begins on March 22. Super Giants play their first match on March 24, an afternoon encounter against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur.Rahul complained of discomfort in his right quadriceps immediately after the first Test which India lost. The initial prognosis done by BCCI medical staff at National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, where Rahul went for rehab, suggested he would be fit in time for the third Test, which was played in Rajkot between February 15 to 18. The selectors had named Rahul in the squad for the final three Tests subject to fitness. However, Rahul never travelled to Rajkot, informing the medical staff he was not feeling 100% confident about his quad. He then missed the Vizag and Ranchi Tests too, as he continued to feel stiffness in his right leg despite the scans conducted at NCA not showing any red flags. Rahul is understood to have spoken to the selectors to update them about the same. Once the specialist in London provides a report, Rahul needs to get a clearance from NCA before resuming cricket.Last year, Rahul underwent surgery having “ripped apart the tendon from quadriceps” while fielding in the IPL match last May between Super Giants (where he is the captain) and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Rahul not only missed the rest of IPL but also the World Test Championship final (held last June). Rahul then played in the Asia Cup followed by the World Cup.Speaking to during the World Cup, Rahul said the psychological impact of the injury was severe and that it had made him doubt whether he would be able to feel confident again.

Pant vs Bumrah in focus as Mumbai arrive in Delhi for Capitals challenge

Kuldeep against the MI batters will also be a sub-plot that could decide the fate of the game

Should Mumbai Indians change up their bowling line-up?

Match details

Delhi Capitals (DC; 6th place) vs Mumbai Indians (MI; 8th place)
Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi, 3.30pm IST (10am GMT)

Big Picture – Pant vs Bumrah

Rishabh Pant has gone from strength to strength since his comeback to competitive cricket. After showing glimpses of his old self in earlier games, he unleashed havoc on the Gujarat Titans bowlers in Delhi Capitals’ previous outing, with 88 off 43 balls and some geometry-defying pyrotechnics. With 342 runs in nine outings, Pant has already crossed his run-tally from the last time he played the IPL in 2022. He is comfortably DC’s highest run-getter this season and boasts a strike rate of 161.32. That strike rate goes further up to 190.55 against fast bowlers. But when Capitals face Mumbai Indians on Saturday, Pant could be in for his sternest test of IPL 2024 against old nemesis Jasprit Bumrah.Bumrah has been in prime form this season. With 13 wickets and an economy rate of 6.37, he is the joint-highest wicket-taker and Mumbai’s best bowler. More importantly, he has a stellar record against Pant. Bumrah has dismissed Pant six times in 13 IPL innings – more than any other bowler. Pant has a strike rate of 111.6 against Bumrah and averages just 8.00.Bumrah has an economy rate of 7.20 in the death overs in IPL 2024, better than any bowler who has bowled more than two overs. Pant, meanwhile is going at a strike rate of 260.60 this season in the last four. The two didn’t come face to face when DC met MI earlier in the competition. But if they do, it could make for an interesting battle within a battle.MI are currently eighth on the points table with three wins in eight games. Hosts DC, who have won three of their last four outings, are sixth on eight points but have played one extra game.

MI LWLWWRomario Shepherd had a strike-rate of 390 the last time both sides met•BCCI

Previous meeting in IPL 2024

Romario Shepherd blasted an unbeaten 39 off 10 balls, including a 32-run last over against Anrich Nortje, as Mumbai racked up 234 for 5. Tristan Stubbs also hammered an unbeaten 25-ball 71, but it came too late as DC managed only 205.

Team news and impact player strategy

Delhi Capitals: David Warner remains unavailable due to a finger injury, while Ishant Sharma has also been ruled out of the game. Afghanistan allrounder Gulbadin Naib, who recently replaced Mitchell Marsh in the squad, is available.DC brought in Rasikh Salam as an impact sub for Prithvi Shaw last game and are likely to go that way again. If the surface is conducive to spin, they could also get in Lalit Yadav for his offspin and batting. Nortje has been woefully out of form (economy 13.36) so DC could bring in Jhye Richardson too.Probable XII: 1 , 2 Jake Fraser-McGurk, 3 Shai Hope, 4 Rishabh Pant (capt & wk), 5 Tristan Stubbs, 6 Abishek Porel, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Kuldeep Yadav, 9 Anrich Nortje/Jhye Richardson, 10 Mukesh Kumar, 11 Khaleel Ahmed, 12 Mumbai Indians: Suryakumar Yadav is favourite to be MI’s Impact Player. They started with three overseas players in the previous game, with Nuwan Thushara coming on later. Mumbai could go with the same combination but could also be tempted to have Shepherd in given his performance in the reverse fixture.Probable XII: 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Ishan Kishan (wk), 3 , 4 Tilak Varma, 5 Hardik Pandya (capt), 6 Tim David, 7 Nehal Wadhera, 8 Mohammad Nabi, 9 Gerald Coetzee, 10 Piyush Chawla, 11 Jasprit Bumrah, 12 Kuldeep Yadav has been DC’s in-form bowler•BCCI

In the spotlight – Kuldeep Yadav and Hardik Pandya

Kuldeep Yadav has been phenomenal this season. With 12 wickets and an economy of 7.54, he is just one away from the Purple Cap, but what’s been most impressive is his 11 wickets in the middle overs, the joint-most in that phase this season. He is also going at an economy of just 6.40 in the phase. MI’s middle order hasn’t been their strongest suit and Kuldeep could add more to his tally.Nothing much has gone to plan for Hardik Pandya. In eight innings in IPL 2024, he has scored just 151 runs, averaging 21.57 with a strike rate of 142.25. With the ball, he has only managed four wickets going at an economy rate of 10.94. Pandya’s entry point while batting has also been a major talking point. In MI’s previous game, he came in after a strong 99-run stand between Tilak Varma and Nehal Wadhera and sucked the momentum out of the game with a run-a-ball 10, with Tim David still waiting to bat. A strong show with both bat and ball will do Pandya’s confidence a world of good.

Pitch and conditions

Runs, runs and more runs have been the theme in the two games in Delhi. Teams have thrashed 57 sixes in two matches here, with scores of 200 breached three times in four innings and the lowest score standing at 199. The shorter square boundaries could bring the likes of Suryakumar, Tim David and Jake Fraser-McGurk into the picture with another high-scoring affair expected. This will, however, be the first day game in Delhi and that could mean some assistance for spinners. The temperature will be around the 38C mark in the day.

Stats that matter

  • Pant’s 243 runs in the middle overs is the highest among all batters in IPL 2024.
  • Capitals have the second-worst economy rate in the powerplay this season – 10.46.
  • Rohit Sharma has 1026 runs against DC in the IPL. He needs five more to go past Virat Kohli’s record for most runs against the Delhi franchise.
  • Bumrah has removed Shaw twice in 16 balls in the IPL. Shaw only strikes at 72.7 against Bumrah, while averaging 8.00. Axar Patel has fallen to Bumrah three times in 45 balls and has a strike rate of 102.2 against him.
  • Rohit has been dismissed by Axar three times in 10 IPL innings and strikes at only 91.3 against him. Khaleel Ahmed has meanwhile sent back Pandya three times in 26 balls in the tournament.

Quotes

“It was obvious in that last game against RR that wasn’t the standard that we set ourselves to. That’s a challenge to the playing group. We are responsible for setting that tone and for providing the intent in the field. We haven’t been effective enough at shutting teams down when they’ve gotten going. That’s a challenge moving forward and again if we are going to play well through in the back-end of this tournament then we have to fire through as bowlers, as batters and in the field. We need to play our best cricket.
“Our batting is also strong, we have scored more than 400 runs in four games. The wicket here is so good. It is a fantastic wicket, not the biggest of grounds, so it’s very hard on the bowlers. It’s really not easy on the bowlers at all. The way it’s going all around IPL, bowlers are getting carted all over. That’s one area that needs to be looked at in the future, a proper balance between bat and the ball.”

Stoinis 'absolutely fine' with not getting a CA contract, still keen to play for Australia

Following his stunning IPL century, Marcus Stoinis says he still wants to play for Australia despite not being contracted for 2024-25

Alex Malcolm24-Apr-2024Marcus Stoinis has no qualms about missing out on a Cricket Australia contract for 2024-25 but is still keen to continue playing for Australia beyond the T20 World Cup after making a stunning statement century for Lucknow Super Giants in a victory over Chennai Super Kings in the IPL on Tuesday.Stoinis has not spoken since missing out on a CA contract for the 2024-25 but there is some nuance to the decision. He is still contracted with CA until June 30 as CA’s contracts run across the financial year. Barring injury, he was locked into Australia’s squad for the T20 World Cup even prior to his record innings at Chepauk on Tuesday. He has been a bedrock at No.5 in Australia’s T20I side as part of a settled middle-order alongside Glenn Maxwell, Tim David and Matthew Wade.Following his century at Chepauk, Stoinis was asked in the post-match presentation whether he had a point to prove but he was pragmatic about the situation.Related

  • Stoinis to play SA20 after BBL, says ODI omission makes 'complete sense'

“I’ve got a great relationship with the [Australia] coach [Andrew McDonald],” Stoinis said. “Me not getting a contract, I knew that a while ago. I think it is great to give younger kids a crack and let them take my spot. I’m absolutely fine with that on the contract list. But on the playing front, obviously want to make sure that I’m there and that’s also why it’s so lucky for us and for me particularly to have this competition [the IPL], that’s why I love it so much.”Stoinis, 34, has been consistent in his statements about his contract situation and his desire to still play international cricket beyond the T20 World Cup. He said back in January he understood why he had been left out of Australia’s ODI squad to face West Indies. He has been in constant communication with McDonald and Australia’s chairman of selectors George Bailey about what his playing future will look like with Australia post the T20 World Cup as they build towards the 2025 Champions Trophy, the 2026 T20 World Cup and the 2027 ODI World Cup.Australia’s next limited-overs assignment after the T20 World Cup is in September in England, which includes five ODIs and three T20Is. They only have one other T20I series in the 2024-25 contract period, against Pakistan at home in November. They also have three ODIs against Pakistan in November, which is their last ODI series before the Champions Trophy.Stoinis has opted not to seek a state contract with Western Australia although he has not shut the door completely on playing domestic cricket in the future. However, his availability and opportunity will be dictated by his freelance schedule and WA’s desire for continuity within their program. Stoinis was one of four WA players who opted to go freelance instead of taking a state deal but Ashton Agar, Jason Behrendorff and AJ Tye are still set to be part of the WA program while Stoinis is unlikely to be. Stoinis has a strong relationship with WA’s state coach Adam Voges, who is with Stoinis at Lucknow as a coaching consultant, and further conversations will be held later in the year.

Ben Stokes impeccable as Durham thrash Somerset in five sessions

Match figures of 8 for 77 see Stokes back to his best with the ball

ECB Reporters Network25-May-2024Ben Stokes performed impeccably with the ball once again as Durham took only five sessions to beat Somerset by an innings and six runs in their Vitality County Championship clash at the Seat Unique Riverside.Stokes, who claimed figures of 4 for 23, was backed up by Ben Raine, Peter Siddle and Paul Coughlin as they skittled a rejigged Somerset batting line-up who were battling illness and injury, however the visitors were on top in the early stages of day two.Concussion substitute turned five-wicket hero Jake Ball took the prized wicket of Division One’s leading run scorer David Bedingham early on and had the hosts 199 for 9 at one point, but lower-order runs from the impressive Raine and Siddle got the hosts to a total of 265, a first-innings lead of 94.Durham’s bowling attack have struggled at times this season but they were all singing from the same hymn sheet here, with Stokes the pick of the bowlers once again, the all-rounder was back to his best with the ball as he led his side to a vital win and claimed match figures of eight for 77.The win sees Durham climb to fourth and Somerset remain in second in the Vitality County Championship Division One table. It was vital for either side to have a good start with the match firmly in the balance after an eventful first day.It was Somerset who got the upper hand early on as Ball grabbed his fourth of the innings when overnight centurion Bedingham edged behind to James Rew for 101, only adding one to his overnight score.Craig Overton then continued the visitors’ perfect start as he removed Coughlin for 2, before Ball secured his seventh first-class five-wicket haul with that of Callum Parkinson.Durham fought back through their final pair as Raine came out and played positively while Siddle played shots that any No.11 would be proud of including a crunching straight drive for four off the bowling of Josh Davey.Raine was the last man to go at the hands of Somerset skipper Lewis Gregory for 46, after putting on 66 with Siddle, a record tenth-wicket partnership in this fixture, and the Australian was left unbeaten on 31.The final pair helped Durham reach 265 all out, handing the hosts one batting bonus point and a sizeable first-innings lead on a pitch that offered plenty for the bowlers.Raine then quickly switched focus to his bowling as he removed Tom Abell for the second time in the match, with the opener edging behind to Ollie Robinson for 2.Siddle then got in on the action as he bowled fellow Australian Matt Renshaw for 6 with one that kept low to leave Somerset 12 for 2.Tom Lammonby and Andy Umeed looked to steady the ship after lunch, but Stokes struck in the first over of his spell, removing Lammonby for the second time in the match after he feathered one behind to Robinson.Stokes struck again in his next over to remove Umeed for 16 when he edged to Colin Ackermann at second slip.Davey, who received a promotion due to Tom Banton being unwell, gave Coughlin his first of the match when he edged to the safe hands of Ackermann.England Test captain Stokes then got his third of the afternoon when Rew departed for 7 after he edged one to the dependable Robinson.Stokes continued his remarkable spell when Overton edged to Ackermann to depart for 6, then Raine continued his good day when he got Gregory lbw for 7, leaving Somerset staring down the barrel of a heavy defeat.Raine then claimed the final wicket as Banton was too unwell to bat, bowling Jack Leach for 13 to give Durham a second win of the season.

Big picture: Make-or-nearly-break for Pakistan

Here we go, again. One of the consequences of their politically motivated estrangement in the bilateral-cricket ecosystem is a heightened sense of anticipation when India and Pakistan meet at an ICC event. Even if it’s happened 12 times at 11 tournaments in the 13 years since 2011.This time, however, is different. India and Pakistan are playing in New York. The ICC are hoping the 34,000-seater stadium it spent millions to speed-build in the span of five months will be at full capacity, to show America the spectacle cricket can be in its most fever-pitched form. There won’t be as many as there were in Melbourne, it won’t be as one-sided as Ahmedabad was, but they will come, and hopefully be witness to a contest worthy of the occasion. So, if this particular fixture didn’t have enough riding on it already, Pakistan gave it several extra helpings of context with their incredible meltdown against USA in Dallas. Babar Azam’s side unravelled against Virat Kohli in a high-pressure finish in 2022 and were utterly overwhelmed in 2023. If they lose to India again on Sunday, their chances of qualifying for the Super Eights will be at the mercy of other results going their way. Rohit Sharma’s men aren’t facing that sort of heat, having beaten Ireland in their first game.A computer-generated rendering of the Nassau County Stadium in New York – organisers will hope Sunday looks just like this•International Cricket Council

While India have been based in New York ever since they landed in the USA, and played their warm-up match and their first group game there, Pakistan’s build-up to Sunday has been rather different. They only got to New York before sunrise on Friday, changed their hotel to avoid the painful commute Sri Lanka had to endure, and got their first look at the ground on the eve of the match. So, here we go, again. India appear stable. Pakistan not so much. It’s often been that way in the lead-up to the most-anticipated fixture of the World Cup.

Pitch and conditions: Which pitch and how will it play?

One of the consequences of creating an international cricket stadium on park land in record time is that the quality of drop-in pitches, which were grown in Florida and transported to New York, has been substandard.South Africa dismissed Sri Lanka for 77 on pitch No. 1 and chased down the target with some difficulty. India dismissed Ireland for 96 on pitch No. 4 two days later. In that match, Harry Tector, Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant were hit on the body, with unpredictable bounce, exaggerated seam movement, and a slow outfield making run-scoring extremely difficult. Following widespread criticism, the ICC acknowledged the problem and said it was trying to find a fix.On Friday, Canada became the first team to score more than 100 in New York, and defended their score of 137 by 12 runs against Ireland on pitch No. 4. South Africa played Netherlands on a fresh surface – pitch No. 2 – on Saturday. Netherlands scored only 103 for 9 but South Africa were 12 for 4 before eventually winning by four wickets. David Miller, however, said pitch no. 2 played better than pitch no. 1. So India and Pakistan are likely to play on pitch no. 4 or 2.Fast bowlers have dominated the games so far in New York. With Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Amir and Haris Rauf lining up for Pakistan, and Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya lining up for India, batters on both sides could be in for a battle unless conditions somehow turn out to be dramatically different. The weather in New York was sunny on the eve of the match, but some weather websites have forecast showers for Sunday morning.1:30

In the spotlight

Babar Azam had a shocker against USA: 4 off 14 balls in the powerplay, 24 balls before his first boundary, and dismissed for 44 off 43 just when Pakistan desperately needed him to continue the momentum he had only recently wrested. He was also unable to galvanise his team in the field, and they stumbled from blunder to blunder to an embarrassing defeat. Having stepped down as captain in November, only to be reinstated in March, Babar’s leadership could come under severe scrutiny if Sunday doesn’t go Pakistan’s way.India picked Shivam Dube in the XI primarily as a left-hand disruptor of spin in the middle overs. He isn’t likely to face much of that against Pakistan though. Dube wasn’t a particularly good player of fast bowling but he’s worked on that weakness with the Chennai Super Kings and averaged 44 with a strike rate of 164 against pace in IPL 2024. If he passes the test against Afridi, Naseem, Rauf and Amir, he will put that debate to rest.Virat Kohli has been consistent in his last four T20Is against Pakistan, while for Babar Azam it’s been all or nothing in their last two meetings in the shortest format•AFP/Getty Images

Stats and trivia

  • In the first four T20 World Cup matches played in New York, fast bowlers have taken 45 wickets and spinners only 10. Teams have bowled 115.2 overs of pace, and only 27.2 overs of spin at this venue.
  • Babar scored a match-winning 68 off 52 balls against India in Dubai in the 2021 T20 World Cup, and was dismissed for a golden duck by Arshdeep Singh in Melbourne in 2022. He’s not been dismissed by Bumrah (13 off 10 balls) or Jadeja (19 off 14 balls) and has not yet faced Siraj or Hardik in T20Is.
  • Kohli has faced a total of 113 balls in T20Is from Naseem, Amir, Rauf and Shadab and never been dismissed. He’s fallen once in 22 deliveries to Afridi but also has a strike rate of 154 against him. Kohli’s last four T20I scores against Pakistan, since 2021, are 82*, 60, 35 and 57.

Quotes

“This is the uniqueness of T20 cricket. Anything can happen anywhere. In the last World Cup, Pakistan lost to Zimbabwe. But eventually they played the final.”
“It’s a big game India- Pakistan, there’s no need for me to motivate the team anymore. They are well-motivated, they are focused for this game. We have to forget about the last couple of days and just move forward, that’s the only way you can deal with life.”

I’ve played for India in the Caribbean quite a bit, but I’m really excited that I’ll be representing the Knight Riders in WCPL,” Rodrigues said. “We all know the legacy that they have across the globe. Even the TKR Women’s team, champions of 2022, are a very proud side. I believe this tournament is also going to serve as a very good preparation for us leading up to the Women’s World T20 in October, with some of the best players in the world taking part in the competition.”TKR have retained five players from the 2023 squad – Deandra Dottin, Shamila Connell, Kycia Knight, Zaida James and Samara Ramnath – and have six more spots to fill to complete the 15-player squad. They were winners of the inaugural edition in 2022.”We are very excited to be able to retain the core of our local Caribbean players and sign up four world-renowned overseas players for this year’s Women’s CPL,” Venky Mysore, CEO of Knight Riders Group, said in a statement. “Great to have Deandra Dottin captaining the team once again. She has been a fantastic leader of the side since the inaugural year, having played a crucial role both as captain and player since our title victory in 2022.”Jemimah Rodrigues and Shikha Pandey will add volumes to the quality of the tournament, and we are very thankful to the BCCI for facilitating their first-ever appearance in the WCPL. The addition of these two big Indian names, along with super stars Meg Lanning and Jess Jonassen should excite cricket enthusiasts around the world, as we look forward to welcoming them all in TKR’s red and black this August.”This year’s CPL will be held in Trinidad from August 21 to 29, with all seven matches played at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy. The 2024 season will be contested by TKR, Guyana Amazon Warriors and defending champions Barbados Royals.

Miles Hammond goes big to keep Gloucestershire's quarter-final hopes alive

His 157 highlights successful chase of 333-run target vs Notts to trump Haseeb Hameed ton

ECB Reporters Network09-Aug-2024Miles Hammond’s brilliant 157 was the highlight as Gloucestershire chased down a 333-run target to beat Notts Outlaws by seven wickets at Trent Bridge to keep themselves in contention for a quarter-final place in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.Outlaws skipper Haseeb Hameed hit his second century of this year’s competition, sharing partnerships of 129 with Lyndon James (61) and 80 with Tom Moores (40) as Nottinghamshire were bowled out for 332 in 49.3 overs, the wickets shared among all seven bowlers used by Gloucestershire, left-arm spinner Graeme van Buuren taking 3 for 40.But Gloucestershire built on a 151-run opening partnership between Hammond – who hit 22 fours and five sixes – and Cameron Bancroft (52), supplemented by Ollie Price’s unbeaten 61 as they eased home with 20 balls to spare. With only one game left, Gloucestershire cannot catch Group B leaders Glamorgan and Warwickshire, but this win takes them ahead of holders Leicestershire into third place, and while Leicestershire have a game in hand at home to Glamorgan on Sunday, their final group game next Wednesday is against Gloucestershire at Bristol.Gloucestershire, though, will be forced to make changes after England Lions call-ups for Price, Zaman Akhter and Ajeet Singh Dale for the match against Sri Lanka at Worcester ruled them out of both the final group round and the quarter-final, should they qualify. The Outlaws themselves are mathematically not out of the running yet for that third knock-out spot, but they would need to win both their remaining matches even to have a chance of progressing.Hammond had one moment of good fortune on 14, Hameed failing to take a chance offered by an uncontrolled shot into the on side off Brett Hutton, but responded with a six whipped over the short boundary on that side in Hutton’s next over and cleared it twice more in a single over off Rob Lord.Freddie McCann, the 19-year-old off-spinning all-rounder, at last made a breakthrough as he turned one into Bancroft’s front pad from round the wicket for a leg-before.Hammond reached 100 from 81 balls before picking up two more sixes – another off Lord and one off Luke Fletcher, again over the short boundary – in going to 153 from just 28 more deliveries. His dismissal came in the same over as that milestone, lbw to leg spinner Calvin Harrison on the sweep, and with the pitch helping both Harrison and left-arm spinner Liam Patterson-White, who bowled James Bracey for 18, Gloucestershire had a few twitchy moments but Price’s unbroken 57-run partnership with Ben Charlesworth saw them over the line comfortably in the end.Asked to bat first, the home side made a flying start, racing to 56 without loss in the ninth over.Slater, after his 164 at Guildford last Sunday, was caught behind for 38, swiping at a wide delivery from Singh Dale after hitting six and four in the same over. Opening partner McCann also fell tamely, caught at short fine leg off left-arm spinner Tom Smith. With Jack Haynes edging behind off Akhter in the next over, Notts were 73 for three.James – one of two Nottinghamshire players also picked to face Sri Lanka next week. His second half-century of the competition underlined his value as he and Hameed rebuilt, giving themselves time to settle before accelerating in tandem. James reached his half-century from 51 balls just after pulling Singh Dale for consecutive sixes, Hameed’s coming moments later from 56.Their 22 overs together ended with James well caught at backward point, after which Hameed and Tom Moores cut loose, adding 80 in just nine overs to bring 350-plus into prospect.Yet after Hameed whipped Dom Goodman for six over midwicket in reaching his century from 92 balls, he was almost immediately out, beaten by Smith’s turn as he went down the pitch. His dismissal sparked a chaotic end to the innings, in which the last six Notts wickets fell in the final seven overs, mostly caught in the deep, albeit with 50 runs added after Liam Patterson-White hit three sixes in his 10-ball 29, Van Buuren picking up his three wickets in 12 balls.

Shoriful Islam out of second Test against Pakistan with groin injury

Taskin Ahmed replaced him in Bangladesh’s XI

Mohammad Isam31-Aug-2024Bangladesh fast bowler Shoriful Islam has been ruled out of the second Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi with a groin injury. He is now in a race against time to be fit for the two Tests in India next month.According to the Bangladesh team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan, Shoriful complained of discomfort in the groin area after the first Test last week, and subsequent tests confirmed the injury.”Shoriful underwent an MRI following the first Test and the results show a Grade 1 left adductor strain,” Bayjedul said. “Recovery usually takes around 10 days in such cases and he has started his rehab.”Shoriful had taken three wickets in Bangladesh’s ten-wicket win in the first Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi. He was also handy with the bat, hitting two sixes in a 14-ball 22. Taskin Ahmed replaced him in Bangladesh’s starting XI for the second Test.Shoriful has played 11 Tests but also missed 11 Tests for Bangladesh since his debut three years ago. Taskin, meanwhile, is returning to the format after more than a year.Bangladesh’s next assignment is a tour of India, with the first Test in Chennai from September 19. They play two Tests and three T20Is during the tour that run until October 12.Bangladesh have a busy schedule till the end of 2024: after the tour of India, they have two Tests at home against South Africa in October, and a full tour of West Indies in November and December.

Jansen and Coetzee on road to recovery, likely to be back in action by November

South Africa are also giving Kagiso Rabada time off ahead of a busy period of Test cricket

Firdose Moonda09-Sep-2024Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee are expected to be back in action by November after being rested for South Africa’s white-ball tour of the UAE, where they will play Afghanistan and Ireland. The pair are a third of the way through a 12-week conditioning block as part of a CSA plan to manage the bowlers and help them recover from or prevent injury.Neither has played for South Africa since June, with Jansen rested from the West Indies Tests and Coetzee injured just before the matches. Currently, Jansen has a shoulder concern and Coetzee a hip issue, but even before those niggles, CSA had recognised the need to give them a break as part of a broader strategy to keep bowlers at their best.”Both of these young players were presenting with chronic physiological and physical things that are predisposed to fast bowling and so we realised that we had to step in. We have to give these guys the best chance of being able to perform,” Rob Walter, South Africa’s white-ball coach, said. “Obviously the workload on young cricketers has gone through the roof, especially guys who bowl fast. In order to ensure that their injuries didn’t put up the stop sign [on their careers], we wanted to put them on a conditioning block.”Related

Similarly, South Africa are giving premier quick Kagiso Rabada an extended period of time off ahead of a busy period of Test cricket, which will start with two matches against Bangladesh in October. CSA is currently waiting on a security assessment to confirm the team’s travel to Bangladesh – the women’s T20 World Cup was moved out of the country to the UAE following political tensions – but expect to play the series at a neutral venue. That will be followed by two Tests against each of Sri Lanka and Pakistan before the SA20, Champions Trophy and IPL, leaving this as the only viable time to rest Rabada.”If you look at what he has in store for him, starting from when the Bangladesh Test series starts, it’s non-stop cricket,” Walter said. “When KG puts on a jersey for South Africa, we want him to be delivering his best and we’ve seen that when his pace is up, that’s when he’s most impactful and effective. It’s just not possible to keep expecting him to do that if we don’t provide these rest, recovery and conditioning windows. This was a perfect time to give him that opportunity. We don’t have a lot of Test matches so to have our best bowlers available and firing for Test cricket is absolutely imperative. So there’s a collaboration between myself and Shukri [Conrad – the red-ball coach] to make sure that that happens.”In Rabada’s absence, Lungi Ngidi and Ottneil Baartman will lead the pace attack in the UAE with Anrich Nortje, who opted out of a national contract as he works his way back from stress fractures, also omitted. Nortje played at the T20 World Cup 2024, but there is no indication of when he will consider representing South Africa in longer formats.South Africa are also resting their two frontline spinners, Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi, and middle-order batters David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen, in the UAE as they look to deepen the player pool ahead of more anticipated schedule clashes. The tri-series in Pakistan ahead of next year’s Champions Trophy is one example, as it will coincide with the SA20 knockouts and so, South Africa will not have a first-choice squad available. To prepare for that, they are broadening the international player base on their UAE trip.”The reality is we can’t rely on one group of players to win games for South Africa and so the players that you see in the squad are either high potential players that we believe can make big contributions for South Africa moving forward, or the next best players in the country,” Walter said. “We want to make sure that we have a bigger group of players that can win games for South Africa. If we want to keep relying on the same faces to do that, what happens with injury, what happens with retirement, what happens in all those instances? The only way to know is to keep exposing players to international cricket.”
