Opener Rory Burns hit a century to boost Surrey’s promotion push and their hopes of victory over Leicestershire Grace Road.Although they were unable to force the follow-on, Surrey added 217 for 4 to their first innings lead of 107 to leave Leicestershire trailing by 324 runs at the end of the third day. That could set up an exciting final day, with Surrey looking to close the gap on leaders Worcestershire, who lost to Gloucestershire, and Leicestershire desperate for their first Championship win for nearly two years.Burns scored 102 and shared an opening partnership of 103 with Zafar Ansari, who made 43 before becoming one of Jigar Naik’s three victims. Offspinner Naik bowled impressively, keeping one end going as Surrey chased quick runs after bowling out Leicestershire for 373.Burns reached his half-century off 91 balls with eight fours, and the century stand arrived in the 31st over. But Ansari was then trapped lbw by Naik, who followed that up by tempting Vikram Solanki into a lofted off drive that provided an easy catch for Charlie Shreck.Tillakaratne Dilshan struck a bright and breezy 35 but was completely deceived by the flight of a Naik delivery and stumped. If this rain-disrupted second semi-final felt like the support act, records insisted it deserved a higher status. It was Lancashire who dominated it, defeating Hampshire with immense comfort to set up a clash with Birmingham in the final.Capable with the bat, clinical with the ball, electric in the field. The attributes that have served Lancashire well all season were again to the fore. Lancashire’s total of 160 for 9, made in 19 overs before a rain stoppage, was recalculated to 143 in 16 overs and Hampshire collapsed in the face of it, only two batsmen reaching double figures.The top sides rarely rest. As Finals Day heralds the climax of another season, both Lancashire and Hampshire are already eyeing potential team strengthening ahead of next season. For once, Nottinghamshire, termed “somewhat parasitic” by Gloucestershire’s director of cricket, John Bracewell, when they secured the transfer of Will Gidman, are the county under pressure, having to resist overtures from Lancashire for Harry Gurney and Hampshire for Andre Adams – a surprise interest in a player who will be 40 next season.But much of Lancashire’s batting resourcefulness came from a player who has expressed his intention to retire at the end of the season. Ashwell Prince, still athletic at 37, marshalled them from the uncertainty of 3 for 2, finding the leg side spaces and running aggressively, making an unbeaten 73 from 52 balls. Add a relatively successful Championship season and he might yet be persuaded to change his mind.But it is Lancashire’s bowling and fielding where their true strength lies. James Anderson’s name had been sung by the Edgbaston crowd as he walked around the ground during the first semi-final, an accolade which drew him into a bashful smile, and he struck first as James Vince picked out cover in his first over.But it was the names rarely chanted: the Smiths, Parrys and Crofts, more-than-decent professionals all, who followed up Anderson’s success so efficiently. Michael Carberry hacked Croft’s offspin to mid-on; Owais Shah, a T20 traveller these days, made room to cut Parry and was bowled as he played above one; and Will Smith, whose three wickets had sustained Hampshire with the ball, was stumped off Croft, a fortunate dismissal for Buttler who dropped the ball onto the stumps.Edgbaston brings more gloom for Hants

Hampshire have appeared in three finals days at Edgbaston without success. “We even changed our hotel this time, but it made no difference,” bemoaned their captain, James Vince. “Finals day is a great day to play in but that is disappointing. We didn’t make them work too hard for that win.”
At least they have promotion from Division Two to keep them interested in the closing weeks of the season – as do the other beaten semifinalists, Surrey. “We have got a week off and time to regroup,” Vince agreed. “We are missing Jimmy Abbott, our overseas seamer, and he has been brilliant for us at the end. In hindsight, they probably got too many.”

The more fringe spectators see the England players care, the more they will care themselves.For Lancashire to reach 160 in 19 overs was even more striking considering that Tom Smith, one of the mainstays of their batting line-up, and Buttler, England’s bright young thing, managed one run between them.A comeback by a national heroes also did not have a grand finale. Andrew Flintoff has gained much satisfaction in proving himself capable of a comeback in T20 but when Finals Day arrived he did not make the final XI, Kabir Ali preferred. Kabir has had a good season, but such are the sentences you never think you will write.In the decade or so that Will Smith has labored to forge a county career, he would rarely have imagined himself as a spin-bowling threat on T20 Finals Day. At Notts and Durham, he was a part of a Championship-winning team and captaincy became a predictable adjunct for a bright cricketer. When it all turned sour at Durham, he looked to Hampshire to redeem his career, but he would have seen his spin as an undercard at best.But Hampshire’s ability to maximize their spin-bowling threat has routinely been at the heart of their T20 challenge and Smith maintained the trend. By the time his spell was completed, his season’s tally was up to 20 wickets. Tom Smith was outdone by a first-ball floater; Keith Brown, whose uncultured strokemaking has sustained Lancashire all season, rallied with 41 from 28 balls before he slapped a wide ball from Smith onto his stumps. Then came the piece de resistance: Buttler. He fell lbw second ball, a single to his name, failing to reverse sweep a mid-pitch scuttle.At that stage, few would have credited that Lancashire would win so easily, although with only 45 minutes to prepare for the final, they had a hard task ahead of them.

Kolkata Knight Riders have developed a knack of pulling off the clinical and the haphazard on the same night. Led by Sunil Narine, their spinners were un-hittable. Perth Scorchers realised that after much huffing and puffing that amounted to only 151 for 7. The Knight Riders batsmen though were lackadaisical and Scorchers’ seamers rode on that, until they met Suryakumar Yadav. His twin sixes in the 19th over killed the contest and sealed Knight Riders’ progress into the Champions League T20 semi-finals.Kuldeep Yadav, the 19-year old left-arm chinaman bowler, and Narine would have been in the dugout wondering if the clincher would be their batting and not them snaring all seven of the opposition’s wickets to fall, at 6.88 to the over. Scorchers’ captain Adam Voges had highlighted the need to collect singles against mystery bowlers, but only he managed to stick to the plan. While the rest of the line-up swished and swashed across the line, he accumulated an unbeaten 71 off 52 balls that looked surprisingly close to match-winning until the final few minutes of the game.Two sixes in the 15th over sparked Suryakumar’s innings off and two similar blows crowned a 19-ball 43. So Knight Riders pushed their winning streak to 12 matches despite losing regular wickets and finding themselves at 87 for 5. Gautam Gambhir, their captain, too found an explanation hard to come by for their victorious run. “I don’t know, the only thing I can think of was the hunger in the dressing room.”While that hunger forced their batsmen to search for too much too quickly – Gambhir sliced to point, Robin Uthappa top-edged a pull off a bouncer that had him cramped up, Kallis flicked a poor ball off his pads into the hands of short fine leg and Manish Pandey sought to dab a yorker to third man to terrible effect – the Knight Riders bowlers found excellent use for it.Scorchers were struggling to pick Kuldeep’s googlies and Narine’s carrom balls. The overs were piling up and instinct forced them to slog across the line. Mitchell Marsh was comfortably stumped, Sam Whiteman was caught in the deep after a flurry, Nathan Coulter-Nile wound up off his first ball to present a top-edge to Kuldeep and Ashton Agar played all around a straighter ball from Narine. Ashton Turner provided a repeat of that dismissal. Scorchers fumbled from a promising 120 for 2 to 132 for 6 in three overs.But Voges fought on using the depth of the crease quite well. From that perch he was able to get better mileage on pulls. When he left the crease he was conscious of hitting straight. But he was the only batsman who looked in any kind of control. Gambhir could sense that tension and flooded the innings with spin. Narine took over in the death and for a second match in succession was on a hat-trick. It was one-way traffic, as Narine collected a ninth four-wicket haul in T20s, the most by any bowler.A similar narrative worked for Scorchers, but it was the seamers that posed their threat. They claimed early wickets, allowed no partnership to reach the 40s and were resilient in the field. Even in the dying stages of the match Yasir Arafat produced a beautiful slower ball to wreck Andre Russell’s stumps, but five runs to defend in the final over was too tall a task.

The BCB has reiterated that Bangladesh will tour Pakistan only when the ICC agrees to send its officials for the fixtures – because of security concerns – but there was progress on other fronts during the meeting between the heads of the two boards in Dhaka.BCB president Nazmul Hassan offered Bangladesh’s stadiums as an alternate venue for Pakistan’s home games, and the PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan said the pullout of Pakistan players from various Bangladesh leagues was regrettable.”We didn’t talk much about lower-level teams but I spoke to him about the national team,” Hassan said of his conversation with Shaharyar. “We maintained that if the ICC can’t send match officials, we won’t send the team. I have clarified this from the start. In terms of our academies, we have a long-term agreement with the PCB so we will look into that as well.”He said he will look into the matter [of sending Pakistan players for DPL and BPL]. I said we don’t have a problem even if they don’t come. Also, because we spoke for very little time, we discussed the possibility of considering Bangladesh as a neutral venue, which will be cheaper for them. It will improve our relationship. We have beautiful stadiums – all ICC-approved – so Bangladesh can be an option.”Shaharyar said Bangladesh could pick and choose where they want to play in Pakistan if the senior team should tour, and hoped to begin with tours by teams of other levels. “I have had a very positive and fruitful exchange with the BCB president and his colleagues,” he said. “I endorse entirely what he has said. Let us see if we can move forward in various directions. I feel we could do with schoolboys, academy, university, women’s and A teams. We can invite any one or more of these teams to Pakistan. You will see for yourself the situation in Pakistan.”If it is not good in Peshawar, we will not take you to Peshawar. If it is not perfect in Karachi, we will not take you there. But in Multan, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Islamabad and Lahore, there are many other cities; in Mirpur, we have a superb new stadium. We will take you there, where I am sure they will be safe and warmly welcomed.”Shaharyar said he wanted the relationship between the PCB and BCB to go back to how it was during his first term as board chairman – between 2003 and 2006. “Last time I was chairman, there was a great spirit of cooperation between Asian boards. We acted together, the four of us, regardless of political issues. We helped each other. The [BCB] president agreed with me that we need to revive the spirit.”This means also that we need to have another look at Pakistani participation in leagues and various other tournaments. I was not aware that we had stopped sending our people here, which I personally think is regrettable. We will definitely put that right.”Shaharyar said some Associate nations – those participating in the 2015 World Cup – had expressed interest in touring Pakistan. “I won’t name them but there are some important Associate countries, who are playing in the World Cup, who told us they are ready to come to Pakistan. It is a step-by-step process, we are hoping Bangladesh will be one of the early ones who will break the ice. We hope to get it [clearance from ICC] with the help of our Asian brothers.”
