Australia progress after Bangladesh collapse

Australia Under-19s reached the quarter-finals as Group B toppers, after beating Bangladesh by 74 runs

The Report by Kanishkaa Balachandran in Abu Dhabi19-Feb-2014
ScorecardJake Doran remained unbeaten on 99 as Australia finished on 244 for 6•ICC

The permutations of qualifying from Group B, the most hotly contested of the four groups, finally came down to net run rate, as simultaneous matches in Abu Dhabi ended with Australia Under-19s and Afghanistan Under-19s going through to the quarter-finals. Australia secured their place as the top team in the group after beating Bangladesh Under-19s by 74 runs at the Zayed Cricket Stadium. The defeat was particularly heartbreaking for Bangladesh since they hadn’t needed to win to qualify. Their target was 245, but once Afghanistan’s result was known even 231 would have been enough.Australia were effectively defending a score of 230 for a place in the quarters. At the Nursery Oval, a stone’s throw from the Zayed stadium, Afghanistan made light work of their chase of 193 against Namibia Under-19s, completing it in 25.3 overs to move their net run-rate above Bangladesh’s. Since that game finished earlier, Australia and Bangladesh knew what they needed to do to take the other remaining spot. By virtue of their big win, Australia took first place in Group C.That Australia got home so comfortably was an anti-climax, given that Bangladesh were comfortably placed at 128 for 2 in 31.4 overs. The loss of their two set batsmen, Shadman Islam and Mosaddek Hossain, in quick succession triggered a collapse and the last eight wickets went down in just ten overs.Australia too had their moments of struggle, especially in the first 20 overs of their innings. That they managed 244 was thanks to Jake Doran’s unbeaten 99 and late hitting by the lower order, with 94 runs coming in the last ten overs.Australia were put in to bat on a green surface with dead grass and the Bangladesh’s left-arm new-ball pair of Mustafizur Rahman and Abu Haider troubled the top order with their seam movement. Rahman squared up Jaron Morgan with a peach of a delivery that seamed away late, getting him to edge to the keeper, before Haider beat Ben McDermott for pace with another splendid ball.Matthew Short’s powerfully driven boundaries through the off side forced field changes, with two catchers posted at cover and midwicket. But his promising knock ended when he set off for a single, turned back, and failed to make his ground. Damien Mortimer charged the left-arm spinner Nihaduzzaman and holed out to long-on, leaving Australia struggling at 61 for 4 in just under 20 overs.Doran had a lucky escape at long-on, when Haider let him off on 38, spilling a catch running forward. It cost Bangladesh dear in the end as they let Doran add 105 with Alex Gregory, and that set the stage for the late acceleration. Gregory scored 48 before he was run out and James Bazley made a 12-ball 24. It remained to be seen whether Doran could get enough of the strike to push for a century. Thomas Andrews was connecting well, clearing the ropes twice, and he was given the freedom to get as many runs as possible. The final over, bowled by Haider, went for 21 runs and Doran had to remain content with an unbeaten 99.Bangladesh lost Joyraz Sheik early, slashing to third man, but the in-form Shadman Islam and Litton Das batted confidently. Das’ placement stood out when he bisected a small gap between short cover and mid-off and he brought out his power game when he charged the seamer Ben Ashkenazi and deposited the ball at least four rows behind the wide long-on boundary. Islam was fidgety to begin with, outside the off stump, but gained confidence with a punched boundary wide of cover.A half-century and more was there for the taking for Das when he spooned legspinner Andrews to cover on 43. He had survived a run-out appeal just a ball before, but unlike Doran he failed to make the most of that life. Islam and Mosaddek Hossain brought some stability with a stand of 48 before Mosaddek was caught behind trying to cut. Islam was soon run out for 49 and Bangladesh’s hold on the chase started to slip.Afghanistan, meanwhile, had routed Namibia, putting the result of the Bangladesh-Australia match into focus. A three-wicket burst by Ashkenazi had Bangladesh limping at 167 for 8 and the safety target of 231 looked distant. It soon became 170 for 9 before Guy Walker wrapped it up for Australia, sending Mustafizur’s off stump for a walk, setting up a quarter-final clash with West Indies on Sunday.Bangladesh’s slide from quarter-final contenders to the Plate league was dramatic. The mood in the camp was understandably somber and their captain Mehedy Hasan said the team had been aware of the 231-run target. He conceded that the batsmen hadn’t batted responsibly enough.

Injuries, call-ups will test Essex depth

ESPNcricinfo previews Derbyshire’s prospects for the 2014 county season

George Dobell25-Mar-2014

Essex have gambled that Monty Panesar will reignite his career…but maybe not enough to interest England•Getty Images

Last year3rd, CC Div 2; Lost in semi-final, FLt20; 2nd in Group B, YB40.2013 in a nutshellAlmost but not quite. Essex went close to promotion, made it to T20 finals day and were just a point away from qualifying for the YB40 semi-finals, but fell just short in all three formats. Only Lancashire won more games in the lower division in the Championship and, had Essex won any of their last three, they might have tipped Northants for promotion. They were dogged by inconsistency, though, in all formats. That they made progress was encouraging, but it was not enough to completely shake-off the tag of perennial under-achievers who should, with their talent pool, be challenging more often. There were some notable low points: being bowled out for 20, the lowest score in their history, on a good batting wicket by Lancashire in June was particularly memorable, but the coach, Paul Grayson, was also moved to offer an apology for the “shambolic” and “totally unacceptable” level of performance during the innings defeat against Northants in April. There were stand-out performers: Graham Napier excelled with bat and ball in all formats, while Jaik Mickleburgh grew into the role of opening batsman and recorded a career-best 243 in the victory over Leicestershire. David Masters remained reliable with the ball and Reece Topley, 15 years Masters’ junior, suggested he was a tailor-made replacement.2014 prospectsAt full strength, Essex look strong in all formats. The addition of Monty Panesar provides the spin bowling resource they have so often lacked in recent times, while the limited-overs batting, in particular, looks powerful. The problems arrive if they are afflicted by injuries or when England call-ups occur. Essex have lost several players in the last few seasons – the likes of Adam Wheater, Maurice Chambers, Varun Chopra and Chris Wright – who would have been coming into their prime now and there may well be times in 2014 when they miss them. Owais Shah has also departed, while Ryan ten Doeschate and Ravi Bopara will be absent with other commitments at times during the season. Without them, there is a thinner look to the squad that could make a long season, with challenges in all three competitions, hugely testing. There seems to be a good chance an overseas batsmen will be recruited a few weeks into the season, but it may just prove that Essex have already missed their best chance of success over the last few years.Key playerPanesar’s signing is a risk. Aged 31, there is no obvious reason why he should not rediscover the bowling form that made him such a successful international bowler only 18 months ago. If he does, Essex will have found themselves a gem who will bowl many overs, retain control in the field and should remain dangerous on pitches offering assistance. But if Panesar has not conquered the demons that marred his stay with Sussex, Essex will have a high-maintenance, unpredictable character who will require a great deal of management in their dressing room. There is also the danger that, if he does rediscover his best form, England will recall him. His signing might limit opportunities for 24-year-old leg-spinner Tom Craddock, too.Bright young thingBlessed with a powerful physique, unusual pace and a skiddy left-arm action, 21-year-old Tymal Mills has many of the raw attributes required to go on and flourish at the highest level. Called into the Ashes party as a net bowler – as close as like-for-like to Mitchell Johnson as England could muster – he surprised several well-established players with his pace and led at least one to suggest he should be in the Test team. Yet Mills claimed only six first-class wickets in the season and, for all the talk of his potential, has to gain greater consistency if he is to flourish as an international cricketer. But while many think 20-year-old Topley may be the one with the brighter future, Mills is one of the more exciting prospects in the English game at present and will remain of great interest to the national selectors.Captain/coachThere were times in 2013 when it seemed Paul Grayson was under pressure to retain his position as director of cricket with Essex. But the club values stability and loyalty and stuck by Grayson. There were some changes in the off-season, though: ten Doeschate has been appointed as captain of the limited-overs teams with James Foster retaining the job in the Championship. All three will be under a bit of pressure to go a step further than the team managed in 2013.ESPNcricinfo verdictEssex should be considered serious promotion challengers and will remain dangerous in limited-overs cricket. Anything less than promotion and a place in the knock-out stages must be considered a disappointment.

McCullum, Mohit keep Mumbai Indians winless

Chennai Super Kings, led by Mohit Sharma’s best IPL figures and Brendon McCullum’s second half-century in four matches, cemented their position near the top of the table with a crushing win over Mumbai Indians

The Report by Devashish Fuloria25-Apr-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details4:16

Agarkar: Dunk could be the X-factor Mumbai need

Keep your competition buried when they are down, say some. Chennai Super Kings, led by Mohit Sharma’s best IPL figures and Brendon McCullum’s second half-century in four matches, cemented their position near the top of the table with a crushing victory against defending champions Mumbai Indians, who are yet to register a win.Super Kings had been alternating between good bowling and good batting performances in their previous three matches. In their fourth one though, they were strong with both bat and ball. As Mumbai Indians eyed a late surge in the last five overs, they lost their set batsmen, Rohit Sharma and Corey Anderson, in quick succession, before Mohit cleaned up the middle order in just one over to end up with figures of 4 for 14.At the break, Mohit said it wouldn’t be an easy chase for the Super Kings batsmen on the slow pitch. The way Dwayne Smith and McCullum played the first two overs suggested they had taken Mohit’s advice seriously; only two runs came. However, with the words of their top performer honoured, Smith switched to his usual modus operandi, hitting three sixes in the next seven balls, all straight hits.Once the chase was set in motion though, it was McCullum who took the front seat, blitzing powerful boundaries through extra cover and midwicket off successive Zaheer Khan deliveries. The sight of his fellow countryman Corey Anderson seemed to charge him up even more as he used his incredible bat speed to power three boundaries through the cover region. With 51 runs in the Powerplay, Mumbai Indians’ only chance in the match was to somehow dismantle the strong batting order. They did get a sniff as Smith and Suresh Raina departed in successive overs. That was to have no effect on McCullum though, who, apart from giving respect to Lasith Malinga, kept on peppering the boundary regularly off other bowlers and brought up his half-century in 36 balls.Super Kings were almost level with Mumbai Indians’ score at the 15-over stage, but they were in no mood to commit the same errors and cantered past the target with an over to spare.Mumbai Indians had much to thank Rohit and Anderson, who revived the innings with a measured 84-run stand for the third wicket after the early loss of their openers. Both batsmen found it tough to push the scoring early on. A six by Anderson off the last ball of the 10th over signalled some intent, but the scoring-rate still lingered below six an over.Rohit picked up the scoring from there on though, smacking a couple of sixes over the leg side as 51 runs came off the next five overs. But all hopes of a late surge were dashed once Super Kings got an opening with the dismissal of Anderson. Rohit, immediately after reaching his half-century, was caught in the deep off Ben Hilfenhaus and Mohit, in the 19th over, burst the balloon with three wickets, all with superbly controlled slower balls. The final total of 141 was 10 to 15 runs short of what Mumbai Indians would have eyed at one stage.

FICA objects to Srinivasan's role in ICC

N Srinivasan should not be allowed near the ICC’s executive board table while he remains under investigation by India’s Supreme Court, says Paul Marsh, head of the cricketers’ global representative FICA.

N Srinivasan should not be allowed near the ICC’s executive board table, nor be sworn in as the body’s new chairman, while he remains under investigation by India’s Supreme Court. So says Paul Marsh, head of the cricketers’ global representative FICA.Stepping into the vacuum left by the leaders of other Full Member nations, most conspicuously Cricket Australia and the ECB, Marsh said Srinivasan could not take up his looming post as the head of the global game if he had been barred from holding the office of BCCI president.Neither the CA chairman Wally Edwards, nor his ECB equivalent Giles Clarke, have deigned to comment publicly on Srinivasan’s predicament, after the three administrators drew out a plan for the next eight years of the game in which ICC revenue is redistributed while bilateral agreements between member countries replace the stipulations of the ICC’s Future Tours Programme. Marsh was more forthcoming, however.”While we are pleased that Mr Srinivasan, at the behest of the Supreme Court, has agreed to step down from his duties as BCCI President, we are of the firm belief that he should not be exercising any functions on behalf of the ICC either, while any investigations concerning his conduct or that of his company are pending or unresolved,” Marsh said. “The cricket world has been told time and again by the ICC that corruption is the game’s biggest issue and that the game has a zero-tolerance approach to it.”For our game to survive, we need it to be not only free of corruption but free of any suspicion of corruption.”The ICC needs to put the reputation of the game and confidence in its procedures first. The players, and other stakeholders in the game, are entitled to expect this from the ICC’s Executive Board.”Under the current circumstances, the prospect of Mr Srinivasan taking the highest posting in world cricket, while these matters are unresolved, is an impossible one.”Edwards and Clarke are due to meet with Srinivasan again ahead of the ICC’s next executive board meeting on April 9 and 10. It has been reported that Srinivasan will remain India’s representative at the ICC table despite the Supreme Court’s order, while also intending to take up the ICC chairmanship at the body’s annual meeting, due to take place in Melbourne in July.Marsh, though, outlined the reasons why Srinivasan should not be permitted to continue in this role.”Serious allegations of betting and spot-fixing in IPL 2013 have been made against Mr Gurunath Meiyappan as the alleged team principal of Chennai Super Kings and these remain the subject of proceedings before the Indian Supreme Court,” he said. “Mr Srinivasan is the managing director of Indian Cements Limited [the owner of the Chennai Super Kings] and is also the father-in-law of Mr Meiyappan.”The Supreme Court order from last Friday noted that Mr Srinivasan had made a written offer through his legal counsel to step aside from his functions as BCCI President until investigations into the allegations against him were completed. The Supreme Court has issued an interim order prohibiting any employees of India Cements Limited (other than players or commentators) from performing any duties for the BCCI. FICA understands that the order applies to Mr Srinivasan, as managing director of the company.”Clause 2.1 of the ICC’s code of ethics states: “Each director shall act in an honest and ethical manner. In order to facilitate the transparent operation of the ICC, conduct that gives the appearance of impropriety will also be unacceptable. Directors shall not engage in any conduct that in any way denigrates the ICC or harms its public image.”
