Asad Shafiq has warned South Africa they could have less than 24 hours left in the Abu Dhabi Test match as he predicted a result in Pakistan’s favour by tomorrow.

Asad Shafiq has warned South Africa they could have less than 24 hours left in the Abu Dhabi Test match as he predicted a result in Pakistan’s favour by tomorrow. Shafiq said that more turn from day four could bring a speedy end to the match in which Pakistan have dominated South Africa in eight of the nine sessions played so far.Only the middle session of day one, when South Africa scored 86 runs for the loss of just one wicket, belonged to the visitors. Hashim Amla, the batsman who held things together in that period, is already out and Shafiq is anticipating the Pakistan spinners to give South Africa’s middle and lower-order a working over.”We have been playing on this wicket for the last three series and we have a fair idea that it will turn on the fourth and fifth day. Day three is very good for batting but it will start turning more tomorrow,” Shafiq said, underlining the fact that South Africa may have squandered their best opportunity to score runs on the third afternoon.Turn was evident from day one, with Pakistan’s spinners generating it early on. South Africa’s spinners could not match that but as soon as Pakistan were back in the field, the threat returned. Saeed Ajmal troubled Smith, who looked to sweep against the turn, and Zulfiqur Babar took a wicket with his first ball, turning from around the wicket and taking the edge off Hashim Amla’s bat. With Mohammad Irfan still extracting steep lift and Junaid Khan causing problems with his angle and movement, Shafiq thinks Pakistan hold all the aces in pursuit of a quick finish: “We know how to exploit conditions, especially here, and our bowlers have done very well. That (a day four) finish is what we are focusing on.”Having only lost to Pakistan three times in 21 Tests, the last one six years ago, South Africa remain hopeful of staging an Adelaide-style comeback. In that game against Australia in November 2012, South Africa were 162 runs behind and were eventually set a target of 430 to win. They batted for a day-and-a-half and had Faf du Plessis to thank for saving the game. But doing that in far more testing conditions will require different technique and perhaps an even stronger mindset. “We can’t hide from the fact that we haven’t batted well in the first innings and at the start of this one,” Vernon Philander admitted. “We need to try and get one or two big partnerships, and try and get between 150 and 200 ahead. Then we can maybe set up something for day five. It might be difficult to try and draw the game from here but if we get them four down, their tail starts quite early, you never know. It’s going to be hard work but we do bat fairly low down.”From the sounds of it, Philander is eyeing bowling again, a task he was more successful at than some expected. In his first Test in subcontinent conditions, Philander picked up three wickets and felt comfortable adjusting.”It’s a lot different to what we are used to be back home and there’s not as much assistance as I’ve experienced around the world up to now,” Philander said. “I was expecting that. I didn’t change too much, maybe just slightly straighter than normal. It’s a pretty tough challenge but I am always up for a challenge.”South Africa’s error on day two was an overuse of the short ball, which they rectified on the third day. They still struggled to maintain pressure because “We kept going at four an over,” Philander said. “It was difficult to hold an end up which also made it difficult to strike because usually you dry one end up and strike from the other.”South Africa are not used to being bullied in this fashion. They last time they lost a Test was in December 2011 against Sri Lanka. The last time they lost a Test away from home was in 2010, against India. Philander was not part of either side.He hadn’t made his debut when the Kolkata defeat came – which was also the last time South Africa conceded a lead this big – and he sat out the Sri Lanka game with an injury. Of the 17 Tests he has played, South Africa have only lost one. It’s no wonder he still has belief enough to imagine being back to defend a target on day five, despite Shafiq’s words. He said the squad will enjoy Jacques Kallis’ 38th birthday before turning back to their task with renewed energy tomorrow. “Cricket is not going to take over your life. We will still have a drink with him,” Philander said. “This is the first time we find ourselves in such a tough situation. But we hope we can find a way out.”

BCB president Nazmul Hassan has hinted at there being doubts over whether the Bangladesh Premier League will go ahead in 2014

Nazmul Hassan: “For it to take place, we have to solve the problems from the last tournament”•BCB
BCB president Nazmul Hassan has hinted at there being doubts over whether the Bangladesh Premier League will go ahead in 2014. With just two months left before the next scheduled edition, Nazmul said the board would have to “solve the problems” of the previous year before going ahead with it.”We want to start the tournament before the 2014 World Twenty20s but for it to take place, we have to solve the problems from the last tournament. We still don’t know how long it will take to solve all the problems,” BCB president Nazmul Hassan has said. The troubleshooting would include deciding whether to take the BPL forward or cut away from it altogether. Nazmul and the BCB have been troubled by the tournament’s administrative issues, pay problems and alleged corruption, among other things. The latest doubts over the tournament have very likely been borne out of money issues with the franchises. The franchises owe the BCB money in various ways, including player payments. This issue has been quiet for a while, but that is because of a much larger problem: the corruption issue, brought out by the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit during last season’s competition, which has become a moral issue in the country. The tribunal looking into the matter hasn’t started its work yet, but it has poured more controversy into the BPL.The BCB are already thinking of an “alternative tournament” if they end up shelving the BPL. “The BPL corruption tribunal has been put together, and they will start their work soon. If by chance we can’t hold the tournament this year for some reason, we will have to look for an alternative tournament,” Nazmul said. “We need to practice for the World T20s.”

Arindham Ghosh scored an unbeaten 88 to take Railways to a strong position of 210 for 4 against Bengal, heading into day two

Bengal reject Arindam Ghosh came back to haunt his home state with an unbeaten 88 that helped Railways recover from a poor start and end the first day’s play at 210 for 4 at the Jamia Millia Cricket Ground in Delhi.Ghosh batted for nearly five hours, as his 220-ball knock ensured that the hosts finished on a decent note. Railways were however assisted by some poor work in the field from Bengal, whose players dropped as many as three catches. Ghosh, who hit 10 fours during his innings, was handed a reprieve towards the end of the day by the keeper Gitimoy Basu, who spilled one off Dinda’s bowling when the batsman was on 87.Ghosh, who had played six first-class matches in the last five years for Bengal before being left out of their probables list this season, was a picture of confidence as he helped the team recover from a precariously placed 31 for 3 — thanks to a couple of important partnerships with Nitin Bhille and Mahesh Rawat, who scored 65 and 44 respectively.Ghosh added 122 runs for the fourth wicket with Bhille, while Rawat’s aggressive batting yielded 57 runs for the unbroken fifth-wicket stand. Rawat too had ridden his luck – he was dropped on 16 by Sandipan Das at point – but he immediately made the most of the second chance, striking Ashok Dinda for three fours off an over.Initially, it looked to be a good toss to win for Bengal captain Laxmi Ratan Shukla as Dinda and Shib Paul made early breakthroughs, and kept the pressure on the batsmen by bowling in the right channels. But as the day progressed, it was evident that a wide patch of grass on the 22-yard strip was helping the batsmen, who were finding it easy to stay on the wicket. That hadn’t been the case in the morning when Dinda had removed the openers Shivakant Shukla and Karn Sharma in quick succession to leave Railways rattling at 7 for 2. Shivakant was removed with a delivery that moved away from him, and was caught by wicketkeeper Basu, while Karn was trapped lbw. Paul then got better of HD Rawle with a delivery that held its line, as the visitors looked to press home the advantage. However, Ghosh and Bhille stepped in to play the rescue-act, despite struggling at first. The pair were initially very cautious, leaving several deliveries outside off stump. Several of Ghosh’s strokes got stuck near the boundary line owing to thick grass, but the batsman kept the runs flowing with some good running between the wickets. As Ghosh began to find his feet, Dinda’s frustration began to boil over, sledging the batsman and peppering him with unnecessary short balls which were left alone. Ghosh, however, remained unperturbed and responded by pulling Dinda in front of square for four. Ghosh eventually reached his third first-class fifty off 116 balls, and Bhille notched his sixth first-class half-century soon after, off 170 balls. The pair looked in good touch, but Paul made the breakthrough for the visitors with a beauty in the 72nd over. He pitched one on the middle stump committing Bhille to play forward, but the ball had moved enough to clip the bails.Bengal would’ve hoped to wrest the advantage, but Rawat, coming in at No.6, immediately got off the mark with a couple of fours, as he and Ghosh batted out the last 18 overs of the day without losing a wicket.
