T&T end record Jamaica streak to reach final

T&T are through to the finals after securing a seven-wicket victory over Jamaica. They will face Barbados in the final on May 9

Trinidad & Tobago held on to a three-wicket victory over five-time defending champions Jamaica in their semi final, and will proceed to the final on May 9 where they will play Barbados. It was a huge upset as it ended a run of 15 consecutive wins for Jamaica in the Caribbean first-class domestic competition.Jamaica chose to bat, and were 87 for 6 at one stage as the T&T bowlers bowled incisive spells. Carlton Baugh played the lone hand with an unbeaten 88, with Tamar Lambert scoring a vital 38. Last man Sheldon Cotterrell scored 44 to help boost Jamaica’s innings to 246. Marlon Richards took 5 for 46, while Imran Khan took two wickets.T&T lost opener Jeremy Solozano early through a run out, but Lendl Simmons and Yannick Cariah shared a 64-run partnership to help steady the innings. However T&T’s innings was kept in check by Nikita Miller, who finished the innings with figures of 5 for 41 in 23 overs. Contributions from Simmons (79), Cariah (26) and Akeal Hosein (24) helped push the T&T score to 170 before they were dismissed.Although they began with a lead of 76, Jamaica did not fare any better in their second innings, as Richards and Rayad Emrit struck to pick up three wickets each. Apart from a 39-run partnership between David Bernard and Baugh, who once again top-scored with an unbeaten 38, the team was shot out for 102, leaving T&T 179 runs to chase.Jamaica’s chase looked as good as over with the score at 73 for 6 but Imran Khan and Emrit ensured the team would make it to the target, albeit seven wickets down. Bernard waged a lone war, taking six of the seven T&T wickets, and was not helped by two dropped catches.”It was a fantastic effort. It was a real fight,” T&T manager Omar Khan told the after the match. “Down to the end the guys rally showed a lot of character. In the batting department we continue to struggle, but Imran Khan and young Katwaroo gave us a partnership (of 57) and we really fought.”And then Imran and Rayad Emrit. We knew we had batting to the end, but at the end of the day the guys have to be commended.”

Miller magic leaves RCB stunned

David Miller became the fourth centurion of this edition of the IPL as he single-handedly kept Kings XI Punjab in contention for a playoff place

David Miller smashed a 38-ball 101 to pull off a heist for Kings XI Punjab•BCCI

David Miller became the fourth centurion of this edition of the IPL, as he single-handedly kept Kings XI Punjab in contention for a place in the play-offs. Miller’s 38-ball century resurrected Kings XI from 64 for 4 and was chiefly responsible for the 99-run blaze off the last five overs of the chase. It ensured his side pulled off a grand coup against a team studded with superstars.Royal Challengers Bangalore would not have expected this Kings XI, especially after posting the tournament’s fifth-highest score. The Royal Challengers innings was built on the shoulders of Chris Gayle – who went past the fifty mark for the first time since his whirlwind 175 against Pune Warriors and reclaimed the orange cap – and the fit-again Cheteshwar Pujara, and was given legs by AB de Villiers’ cameo at the end.Kings XI responded with only a spine in Miller. He proved it remains the most important component of the human body and can be totally self-sustaining if needs be. Miller’s father would have been a proud man, if he was watching in Durban. He gave his son an important piece of advice when he was growing up and tonight he followed it to the letter.”If it’s in the V, it’s in the tree and if it’s in the arc, it’s out of the park,” Miller senior said.Against an attack that continued to offer him length, Miller had both those options and took full advantage. His innings was a masterclass in hitting straight, although not all his shots found the boundary. He top-edged one attempt when he was on 42. Virat Kohli spilled the skier which proved match-changing. The next over confirmed it, as Miller took 26 off RP Singh to begin the assault. He started by dispatching a half-volley over long-off and ending with a cut over point to display his ability in hitting to other areas of the ground as well.Miller went on to pick the slower ball with ease and targeted wicket area as well, bringing up the 100 partnership with Rajagopal Sathish with a six off a short-ball. Sathish had only scored 11 at that point and was happy to play a bit-part role until the end.Sathish managed 14 runs off Gayle’s over and then dutifully gave Miller the strike to end the match. With three runs to get – it was only the 18th over – and Miller on 95, he needed a big hit to reach a century and he duly sent a length ball over the sightscreen to bring up his milestone in characteristic fashion.Fittingly, it came off Gayle who had himself showed intent in the other half of the match but had to be a spectator this time. Gayle started well, despite being peppered with short balls from the Kings XI attack. Praveen Kumar and Parvinder Awana did not have the pace to test Gayle on the back foot and he had Pujara as an ideal foil. When Gayle was bowled, Pujara went on to record his first half-century in the format in typically classy fashion. His only ungainly shot came when he charged Manpreet Gony and played on.Kings XI clawed back but ran into de Villiers at the end of the innings. His cheeky defiance began with a flyswat through midwicket and he innovated with the sweep shot and square cut to take Royal Challengers to a total they would have been satisfied with.Having reduced Kings XI to 64 for 4 at the halfway stage, with David Hussey among those dismissed, Royal Challengers would have been confident of victory. But the other David was still at the crease and it is his name Royal Challengers will remember after tonight.

2º – OBINA – 47 GOLS

Lancashire refute pitch claims after big win

Lancashire have dismissed criticism of the pitch at Old Trafford after wrapping up a convincing eight-wicket victory over Northamptonshire

Lancashire have dismissed criticism of the pitch at Old Trafford after wrapping up a convincing eight-wicket victory over Northamptonshire, their main rivals in Division Two, inside two days. The victory, achieved with three overs remaining after they took an extra half hour to finish the game, reduced Northamptonshire’s lead at the top of the table to 17 points having played a game more, but it was a triumph marred by controversy over the state of the wicket.Despite Jack Birkenshaw, the ECB pitch inspector, clearing the surface after concluding that high-quality seam bowling and average batting were the contributory factors to 18 wickets falling on the opening day, it was not a verdict that satisfied David Smith, Northamptonshire’s chief executive.Smith, who was at Old Trafford for the opening day, claimed the wicket was “akin to an out-ground and a poor one at that” in an interview with the . “What level of preparation went into this wicket?” he said. “We can only guess but it looked underprepared and the scorecard supports this view.”The controversial surface lies several away on the square from that being prepared for the third Ashes Test, which starts on August 1.Mike Watkinson, Lancashire’s director of cricket, not surprisingly disagreed with Smith’s verdict, despite the same pitch being marked as sub-standard last year against Worcestershire. On that occasion Lancashire escaped with a warning because the square had only recently been turned as part of the ground’s re-development.”Jack Birkenshaw has been here on behalf of the ECB during preparation time for the game and for the entire match and in his opinion it has been swnging ball, climatic conditions and poor batting that has led to the wickets,” said Watkinson.”I don’t think there has been anything sinister from the pitch. We had the first day of a Championship match which was played 80 percent of the day under floodlights and the temperature at 25 degrees with extreme humidity and the ball swinging around corners.”Certainly conditions for batting had improved on the second morning, with the sun attempting to break through the cloud cover, enabling Tom Smith to hit an unbeaten 35 and secure a crucial 97-run first-innings lead. For long periods of Northamptonshire’s reply it appeared they would suffer a humiliating innings defeat well inside two days, with Glen Chapple’s new-ball partnership wtih Kyle Hogg once again proving productive. They combined to make an early breakthrough when Kyle Coetzer mistimed a defensive shot against Hogg that looped to Chapple at mid-on.Chapple followed up with a full length delivery that seamed back into David Sales and knocked back his off-stump and James Middlebrook fell to the next ball, shuffling across his stumps to fall lbw to Hogg. At that stage, Lancashire had claimed their last 26 Championship wickets for only 109 runs, with their in-form opening pair claiming all but two.At least Northamptonshire resisted long enough this time to force Lancashire into a bowling change for the first time in 59.1 Championship overs, when left-arm spinners Simon Kerrigan and Stephen Parry, both selected to try and exploit a dry surface, were finally utilised shortly before lunch.Instead of having a major impact, a new pair of Lancashire seamers effectively ended Northamptonshire’s resistance, with Luke Procter and Tom Smith inducing a mini-collapse of four wickets for 45 runs in 12 overs after lunch. Two of those dismissals were self-induced, with Steven Crook chipping Procter to midwicket and David Willey mistiming to mid-on.When David Murphy joined Andrew Hall at the crease for the start of Northamptonshire’s eighth-wicket partnership, they were still trailing by 17 runs but demonstrated that sensible batting could prosper by both scoring half-centuries and forging an 89-run stand, the biggest of the match on either side. They batted together for 31 overs but in sight of setting a potentially testing target for Lancashire to chase in the final innings, they lost wickets in a cluster once again, the last three falling in only eight balls to leave a modest victory chase of 73. Despite losing Procter to the third ball of the reply, edging Willey down the leg side, Lancashire sealed their victory with plenty of time to spare and close the gap on Northamptonshire.Their coach, David Ripley, was less critical of the surface than Smith but he wasn’t impressed with the performance of his batsmen on the second day when conditions eased. “My personal view of the pitch was that if it was a little below par on the first day, it was genuine,” he said.”On day one I had a lot of sympathy against two good bowlers in seamer-friendly conditions and it was tough. I was actually more disappointed today because I thought the wicket was a lot easier and we had two guys really dig in for us and make a substantial partnership but no other partnerships.”

Audition for India's next-in-line

These five games may not be entirely indicative of the future of the Indian team, but they will offer some enlightening clues

Start time 0900 local (0700 GMT)The series will also test Virat Kohli’s captaincy, in MS Dhoni’s absence for the whole tour•AFP

Big PictureZimbabwe and India were regular sparring partners in the mid to late nineties, but India have only visited the country thrice since 2000 and haven’t invited the Zimbabweans over since 2002. For the hosts, the upcoming series could well be the marquee cricketing event of the year, and India also have their reasons to make the most out of this trip. The presence of five potential one-day international debutants suggests that India are keen to try out a couple of new options, particularly with the ball, and the series will also allow Virat Kohli to add to his CV as the heir to the captaincy after mixed results at the helm in the Caribbean. These five games may not be entirely indicative of the future of the Indian team, but they will offer some enlightening clues. They’ll also serve as an early audition for an event of far greater consequence to India: their trip to South Africa at the end of the year. India’s preparations for that tour also include a visit by the A side to South Africa in August. Despite the modesty of the opposition there’s ample reason for the visitors to take these games seriously. For their own part, Zimbabwe will be happy with the chance to test themselves against quality opponents, and also ease some financial pressures with the tour likely to turn a profit thanks to the lucrative television rights deals that India bring with them. Indeed, after the paucity of international fixtures last year, Zimbabwe are proving a far more popular destination in 2013 with Pakistan and Sri Lanka both visiting before the end of the year. The Zimbabweans also won’t have forgotten India’s last tour in 2010, when an inexperienced touring group battled to compete with either the hosts or Sri Lanka in the tri-series and failed to make the final. Zimbabwe’s squad has been training together for more than two months to prepare for these ODIs, and it’s possible that they could register a rare win against elite opposition in one or two of the matches. The series opener could well be their best chance to do that.Form guide (most recent first, last five completed games)
India WWWLL
Zimbabwe WWLLLIn the spotlightIt’s hard to believe it’s taken this long for Cheteshwar Pujara to force his way into ODI contention for India, considering his eye-catching short format statistics – he averages 56.97 in List A cricket, with eight hundreds. Pujara has taken to Test cricket with instinctual ease, and if he moves as naturally into ODIs, his presence in the middle order could add significantly to Zimbabwe’s worries.Where Pujara’s statistics immediately and obviously mark him out as a successful batsman, Sikandar Raza’s don’t, at first glance, suggest a rare talent. But his laidback, friendly attitude belies a fierce dedication to the game, and Raza has earned his place in this team. He averaged 52.40 in the List A season leading to his debut against Bangladesh in May, but his results during that tour were modest and he’ll be keen to make an impact.Team newsZimbabwe are picking from a fully-fit 17-man squad, and coach Andy Waller confirmed that Ray Price is, in fact, in the group, but it’s unlikely he’ll play in the opening match. The host’s nets session on Monday also suggested a settled top six, but there are nine bowlers bottlenecking into four slots down the order. A balanced attack seems the most sensible option, and Tinotenda Mutombodzi looked the best of the spinners during training.Zimbabwe (likely): 1 Vusi Sibanda, 2 Sikandar Raza, 3 Hamilton Masakadza, 4 Brendan Taylor (capt & wk), 5 Malcolm Waller, 6 Sean Williams, 7 Elton Chigumbura, 8 Prosper Utseya, 9 Tinotenda Mutombodzi, 10 Kyle Jarvis, 11 Brian VitoriLike Zimbabwe, India’s scope for experimentation – at least in the series opener – is in their bowling group. Amit Mishra’s experience will be valuable to the young attack, while the combination of Vinay Kumar and Jaydev Unadkat would add variety. The most open position is that vacated by R Ashwin at No. 8, and offspinning allrounder Parvez Rasool could be in line to become the first player from India’s Kashmir valley to represent the national side.India (likely): 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Virat Kohli (capt), 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Parvez Rasool , 9 Amit Mishra, 10 Vinay Kumar, 11 Jaydev UnadkatPitch and conditionsWinters in Zimbabwe are cold and dry and usually the pitches reflect this, favouring spin over seam and playing a little on the slow side. The track for Wednesday’s game has been very well watered, however, and the groundstaff have left some grass on it to negate the potential for drying and crumbling. New ball bowlers may well profit in the first hour, with the games due to start somewhat early at 9am, but the wicket should have the pace to allow for shot-making.Stats and trivia Despite some notable successes, such as at the 1999 World Cup, Zimbabwe have only beaten India in 10 out of the 51 ODIs they’ve played against them since 1983. The first obstacle for Zimbabwe’s bowlers in a daunting Indian batting line-up will be the opening pair of Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma, who average 57.72 in partnership and have put together three century stands. Of Zimbabwe’s current batsmen, captain Brendan Taylor has by far the best record against India in ODIs, with 184 runs at 46 against them in four games.Quotes”Our top six are quite settled, and I’d like to think they know they’re in that position, but we’ve obviously got a spare batter sitting waiting to move in. But I think they’ll have a decent run.”
