Collingwood concentrates on England preparation

Paul Collingwood insists that Australia’s current struggle for form will have no bearing on England’s preparations ahead of the first Test in Brisbane

Paul Collingwood insists that Australia’s current struggle for form will have no bearing on England’s preparations ahead of the first Test in Brisbane later this month, as they turn their attentions to their opening three-day warm-up game against Western Australia in Perth on Friday.England have named a 13-man squad for the first of their three practice matches, with the fit-again Ian Bell expected to replace Eoin Morgan as the only change from the side that won the fourth Test against Pakistan at Lord’s back in August. That level of stability is something that the Aussies cannot currently rely upon, having slumped to an improbable one-wicket defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka at the MCG on Wednesday – their sixth consecutive loss in all internationals dating back to July.In addition to their lack of form, Australia are also struggling to deal with newspaper reports suggesting that Michael Clarke, the team’s vice-captain, has fallen out with senior colleagues who do not believe he should be the next Test captain after Ricky Ponting. But Collingwood, while clearly happy for his opponents to take the heat in the early stages of the tour, was adamant that England needed to keep their counsel in the coming days and not get distracted by matters beyond their control.”It’s a different position – it’s something we’re not used to when we come to Australia,” admitted Collingwood, who witnessed at first hand the media feeding frenzy that greeted England in 2006-07, not least when Marcus Trescothick quit the tour ahead of the Brisbane Test with a recurrence of his stress-related illness. “But we know they’re a good side, and we’re going to have to play very well to beat them.”Let’s be honest, the more games they lose the better it is for us. The more games they do lose, confidence levels may go down,” he added. “But we’re not going to read too much into it. We’ve got to prepare ourselves as a team to be in the best frame of mind going into the Test matches. I’m sure they’ll be trying to do that themselves too. We’re not going to take them lightly – it’s as simple as that.”Australia in a home Ashes Test will be a different proposition to the team that lost the first ODI against Sri Lanka, Collingwood insisted, but nevertheless, the manner in which they let slip a seemingly impregnable position at 107 for 8 has been taken as further evidence of a loss of killer instinct, something that England themselves witnessed at Cardiff in 2009, when James Anderson and Monty Panesar saved the game with an unbroken tenth-wicket stand.”Most of us watched the game [against Sri Lanka], but really we’re very much focused on what we’ve got to do rather than the opposition,” said Collingwood. “Obviously it’s a different team to the Test team, so we’re very much preparing ourselves to do well in these warm-up games. It would be silly to let the foot off the gas because of the opposition going through whatever they are going through.”Collingwood, for his part, has plenty to keep his mind occupied in the coming days, as he prepares to readjust himself to first-class cricket after a sparse home summer against Pakistan. However, with just seven first-class outings since the World Twenty20 got underway in April, he’s not too concerned about the suggestions that he is out of nick, especially having overcome several doubters on the last trip four years ago with a gutsy double-century at Adelaide.”Anyone who says it’s a bad trot I’m going through, I’m not going to read too much into it,” he said. “The challenges you get out here are exactly what I want as a cricketer, and something I’m very excited to get my teeth into. I look forward to playing what I hope will be some big, match-winning innings.”As far as England are concerned, their preparation for Brisbane begins in earnest at Perth on Friday, and will continue through both of their remaining warm-up matches at Adelaide and Hobart. “If we can get three wins under our belts that will be fantastic,” said Collingwood. “”You want good individual performances out there as well to get the confidence going high, because the belief is the most important thing, coming to Australia.”There is genuine belief around the camp that we can win out here,” he added. “I don’t think anything that happens between now and the first Test will waver that belief in any way. The guys are very experienced now, playing in different conditions round the world, and although there are a couple of technical adjustments, I think that belief is the major thing we can bring into this tough environment. We’ve done plenty of talking in the dressing room – now is the time to go out there and put those big performances in.”England squad Andrew Strauss (capt), Alistair Cook, Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, Ian Bell, Matt Prior (wk), Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, Steven Finn, James Anderson, Eoin Morgan, Chris Tremlett

Afghanistan surge to Intercontinental title

Afghanistan’s rise through the cricket world continued they secured the Intercontinental Cup in their first year of participation

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Dec-2010
ScorecardAfghanistan’s rise through the cricket world continued as they secured the Intercontinental Cup in their first year of participation with a commanding seven-wicket victory against Scotland in Dubai. Mohammad Shahzad guided the pursuit of 124 with an unbeaten 56 after Scotland had been skittled for 82.Scotland were facing an uphill battle at the start of the third day when they resumed on 64 for 6 and the lower order couldn’t turn around their fortunes. The innings lasted just a further eight overs with Mirwais Ashraf claiming three quick wickets and Hamid Hassan completing a match-haul of eight when he removed Richie Berrington.Karim Sadiq fell early in the chase, but Scotland needed more than one breakthrough to give Afghanistan a scare. Shahzad and Shabir Noori (35) added a brisk 55 to ease any tension in the dressing room. When Noori was caught behind, Narwoz Mangal hit four boundaries to take Afghanistan to the brink of victory.Hassan was named Man of the Match and his coach, Rashid Latif, offered him high praise with comparisons to Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. “I kept wicket a lot with Wasim and Waqar who are both mentally and physically very strong and they used to bowl spells of 18 and 20 overs on the trot and to see Hamid come in and bowl 22 odd overs on the trot I think is amazing,” he said. “I didn’t think anybody could bowl 22 overs in a row, but Hamid did and it was simply great stuff.”Hassan, though, was more modest. ” I don’t know where I get the stamina to bowl 22 overs, I think I was just so desperate to make sure we won the final that I lost count of how many overs I had bowled,” he said.”It wasn’t easy bowling as I’ve got a bit of a heel injury but all that mattered was that we won the final today. Credit should go to Scotland, they played well and particularly [Neil] McCallum who scored the century for Scotland on the first day.”

Newcastle: Exciting Lucas Paqueta claim

Newcastle United fans would be ‘licking their lips in anticipation’ if the club reunited Lucas Paqueta with Bruno Guimaraes.

That’s according to journalist Pete O’Rourke, who was speaking to GiveMeSport about Newcastle’s summer target.

The lowdown

According to French outlet Le10Sport, Newcastle saw a £34million bid for Paqueta rejected last year following the takeover at St James’ Park. The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder has more recently claimed that the Magpies are ‘in with a great chance’ of landing the Brazilian this summer.

Paqueta’s future is uncertain, with sources indicating that he’s told manager Peter Bosz that he’ll make his decision this month.

Guimaraes, who played with the former AC Milan star at the Stade Gerland before his £40million switch to Newcastle, has offered his recommendation.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-6/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The latest

O’Rourke says supporters would relish the chance to see the pair rekindle their partnership in the north east. He believes it could be the stuff of ‘dreams’ for the Toon.

“It would definitely be something that would have a lot of Newcastle fans licking their lips in anticipation of what they can do,” he tells GMS.

“Bruno Guimaraes has already established himself as a big fans’ favourite at the club and he linked up really well with Paqueta at Lyon.

“If those two could be reunited, they could be a dream pairing for Newcastle going forward.”

The verdict

It’s clear that the bond between the two players is incredibly strong. Paqueta told Guimaraes following his January move that he would miss him ‘so much, on and off the pitch’.

In reply, Guimaraes described Paqueta as the ‘brother’ he never had and said it had been a ‘huge pleasure’ to play alongside him.

That connection materialised on the field in a 1-1 draw between Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain at the start of the year as Guimaraes provided a ‘beautiful assist’ for his team-mate.

If £50,000-per-week star Paqueta does decide to leave, his former midfield partner will surely do all he can to persuade him to pick Newcastle.

In other news, PIF are insisting on this signing.

Virada do Criciúma.

van Wyk leads Knights to win in finals

A half-century by Morne van Wyk and a tight performance in the field from the Knights took the them to victory in the MTN40 finals, as they beat the Titans by eight wickets on the Duckworth-Lewis method

The Bulletin by Firdose Moonda11-Dec-2010
ScorecardAn unbeaten 85 from their captain Morne van Wyk led the Knights to victory over the Titans in the MTN40 final in Centurion. The visitors won by eight wickets on the Duckworth-Lewis method after rain reduced their innings to 23 overs. It was the Knight’s third limited overs title since the inception of the franchise system in South Africa in 2004/5.With lightening going off like fireworks around the ground, the Knights knew the Duckworth- Lewis method would probably play a part in their chase of the Titans’ 227, and began in earnest. Albie Morkel opened the bowling for the Titans, although his brother Morne and seamer Ethy Mbhalati were both on the field. Van Wyk took advantage, hitting Albie to the point boundary and then to long-off in the first over. He was brutal in the first ten overs, showing no respect even when Morne and Mbhalati were introduced. He was particularly strong through the covers and helped his team bring up their 50 off 44 balls.Van Wyk’s opening partner Reeza Hendricks played second fiddle and fell to left-arm spinner Roelof van der Merwe in the ninth over. As van der Merwe made the breakthrough, the heavens opened and the match was delayed for 78 minutes. The Knights innings was reduced to 23 overs and they were set a revised target of 152 to win. They needed 85 off 86 balls after the delay. The downpour did not put a dampener on van Wyk’s innings and he reached his half-century with a drive through the covers. Van Wyk and Rilee Rossouw took the Knights to the brink of victory before Rossouw played onto his stumps and left Dean Elgar to finish the job with the captain. Van Wyk hit the winning run with eight balls to spare and after completing the single took a bow to celebrate guiding his team to victory. The Knights bowlers had bowled out the Titans in 39 overs, after putting them in to bat in gloomy conditions. Seamer Ryan McLaren picked up a wicket in his first over when opener Henry Davids was caught by Rossouw in the slips. Jacques Rudolph and Blake Snijman both struggled to play big shots to the tight line McLaren and seamer Johan van der Wath were bowling, and both fell cheaply. Snijman was caught by Elgar at point off van der Wath and three balls later Rudolph handed McLaren his second scalp, after being caught behind by van Wyk.McLaren was replaced by left-arm seamer Obus Pienaar after a six-over spell and that released some of the early pressure on the Titans. AB de Villiers played one convincing cut off seamer Victor Mpitsang but, worryingly for the national team, scratched around nervously for the rest of his innings. He managed to rotate the strike with Faf du Plessis, who established himself as the anchor.De Villiers was dismissed for 31, thanks to a diving catch by Rossouw in the covers and that brought big-hitting Farhaan Behardien to the crease. His first boundary was a magnificent shot over left-arm seamer Jandre Coetzee’s head for four and he followed it up with two more straight drives down the ground. Behardien looked set to stay with du Plessis till the end, but pulled a van der Wath delivery straight to Rossouw at short midwicket.Albie Morkel was out for a first ball duck and then McLaren returned for a second spell with immediate success. He claimed the wicket of van der Merwe, who inside-edged one onto his stumps. Du Plessis continued steadily at the other end, unperturbed by the carnage around him, which only got worse. David Wiese was caught behind off Coetzee’s bowling and Mangaliso Mosehle was run out off the next delivery. He drove confidently to deep-extra cover before Elgar swooped in and threw to Coetzee, who dumped the ball onto the stumps in emphatic fashion. The Titans looked likely to be dismissed for under 200, but du Plessis had other ideas. He smacked back-to-back sixes off van der Wath in the 38th over, first over long-on and then over long-off, scoring 19 runs off the over, including a clever single off the last ball to keep the strike. Du Plessis registered his third century of the competition in the next over, but the Titans innings came to an end before they could complete their 40 overs, when Morne Morkel top-edged high into the Centurion sky and van Wyk completed his fourth catch of the evening.

Rangers must axe Borna Barisic

Rangers will need to put a stop to their celebrations after securing a place in the Europa League final to concentrate on the Premiership once again.

The Gers have three Scottish top-flight matches left to play before the end of the campaign and are currently nine points behind their arch-rivals as it stands, making a late title charge seem near-on impossible.

Gio van Bronckhorst’s men have two cup finals coming up this month but still need to see out the remainder of their domestic fixtures.

They face Dundee United at Ibrox today after beating RB Leipzig 3-1 in Europe on Thursday night, but one man who has played himself out of deserving a place in the line-up is left-back Borna Barisic, who is currently on a poor run of form.

Ex-Gers midfielder Derek Ferguson ripped into the Croatian international after the recent draw with Celtic in the Premiership. The full-back was beaten to the ball by Jota from a cross for the Hoops’ opening goal and the pundit was left far from impressed, saying:

“With Barisic, he got spooked. He has one look, two looks, he has three looks. He knows he’s there. Then there comes a time, you know he’s there. Is there a panic in him? Instead of thinking there’s the ball, I’ll go and meet it, he doesn’t react.”

Ferguson went on to say that Barisic “didn’t deliver” in the match and this was the case once again against RB Leipzig on Thursday. Whilst his team-mates put in stoic displays at the back, the Croatian struggled throughout the game and was unable to showcase the best of his abilities on the night.

The £18k-per-week lightweight failed to step up to the mark and has now put in worrying displays in two crucial matches in succession – against Celtic and Leipzig – and this should lead to him being axed from the starting XI today.

In the 1-1 draw with their Glasgow rivals, Barisic lost possession of the ball a whopping 26 times as he completed 67% of his attempted passes. He then gave the ball away on 14 occasions against the German outfit, whilst completing just 44% of his passes and losing four of his six individual battles.

These statistics, and the aforementioned quotes from Ferguson, suggest that the Croatian defender has been a liability at the back for Van Bronckhorst this month. Therefore, he must be brutally axed from the starting XI for this clash at Ibrox today as punishment for not delivering in those two big matches in the Premiership and Europa League.
