Everton: Yerry Mina proves Lampard wrong

Everton have comfortably progressed in the FA Cup, beating Brentford 4-1 at Goodison Park in Frank Lampard’s first game as manager, in a team performance the Toffees haven’t enjoyed for a while.

Yerry Mina, Richarlison, Mason Holgate and Andros Townsend all found the net in an attacking masterclass from Lampard’s team which saw them play much more offensively than they ever did under Rafael Benitez.

Brentford were incapable of breaking down the Toffees, with only two shots on target throughout the game, but were gifted a penalty by Jordan Pickford when the goalkeeper made a late challenge on Ivan Toney.

The former Chelsea boss set up his team with a back three, playing a 3-4-3 formation, and early in the first half there was another blow to the injury-ridden squad with Ben Godfrey sustaining what looked to be a calf injury in the first 12 minutes, so Lampard was duly forced to replace the defender with Mina.

The £120k-p/w machine missed out on the starting line-up, but he made sure he would use his opportunity to prove his new manager wrong on that decision by becoming an absolute force throughout the game both offensively and defensively in his position.

Mina opened the scoring for Everton. rising the highest when the ball was whipped in from the corner to find the back of the net just 16 minutes after he came off the bench, and he delivered a man of the match performance in his defensive position in the back three.

According to SofaScore, the 27 year old was the highest-rated player on the pitch this afternoon (7.70), winning 86% of his duels and completing 91% of his passes despite having fewer touches than his fellow defenders, proving that Lampard should think twice about leaving him on the bench in the future.

The 43-year-old will have plenty to take away from that performance, and Everton fans will surely be delighted that they got to watch an enjoyable game after a series of poor performances and protests throughout the season so far. Mina today went a long way towards proving a point to his manager and putting a smile back on Evertonian faces.

'I played my percentages and took it on' – Morgan

Andrew Miller at the Rose Bowl22-Jun-2010

Drive for cover: Eoin Morgan took advantage of Australia’s half-volleys in a dominant performance•Getty Images

After the innings of his life to date, Eoin Morgan faced the press with the same thousand-yard stare and monotone voice that Bob Willis produced at Headingley after his own demolition of the Aussies back in 1981. It was hardly surprising, to be fair. After gracing the Rose Bowl with a performance of Technicolor rarely witnessed in England’s one-day history, he wasn’t interested in furnishing his effort with any more superlatives than he’d already produced.”I’m just doing what I practise really,” he deadpanned. “It was a belting wicket. I played my percentages and took it on. It’s tough playing against Australia, especially with the attack they have. They’ve got some good bowlers, so it was nice. I’ve got no trick shots on the snooker table. And I’m rubbish at golf.” At 10.30pm after a sapping evening’s work, that was pretty much that.Morgan will know, however, that in a year that culminates in both an Ashes and a World Cup campaign, that was quite some manifesto to slap on the table. When he last took part in a home one-day series, in the autumnal mists last September, he was a rookie finding his feet against a vengeful Aussie outfit, who were on their way to a 6-1 thumping. Now, nine months down the line, he’s cemented a role as England’s finest finisher for a generation, having played an integral role in a one-day series win in South Africa, and a maiden ICC global triumph in the Caribbean. And, as a packed and jubilant Rose Bowl crowd rose to acclaim his first hundred on home soil, it really was a case of seeing is believing for the English cricket’s fanbase.”The great thing about Morgy is he is a finisher, but he does it in an aggressive manner as well, and that puts opposition captains under pressure,” said Andrew Strauss. “He’s doing it consistently as well, and it was an outstanding innings today – one of the very best I’ve seen in an England shirt.”Coming from a man who’s seen Kevin Pietersen in full flow on numerous occasions in the past five years, that was quite some statement, but Strauss was loathe to suggest that a new sheriff had ridden into KP’s town. “I don’t think we need to compare the two,” he said. “It’s not like a ‘wow!’ competition. He plays some outrageous shots but the great thing is he can score around the wicket against all sorts of bowling, so as an opposition captain, you scratch your head and think how can we tie him down. It’s proving difficult at the moment.”Morgan’s intervention was audacious and emphatic. At the nadir of England’s innings, they had slumped to 97 for 4 after 20 overs, a scenario almost identical to Australia’s early wobble at 98 for 4 after 21.2. But, on his watch, England somehow rushed to victory with an impertinent four overs to spare. The actual margin of victory – four wickets – was more realistic as to the tussle that had taken place. But Morgan’s magic ensured the final stages were a rout.”I thought tonight was a pretty even contest, for the majority of the game it was right in the balance,” said Ricky Ponting. “It was a decent game of cricket and we’ve got some work to do to make sure we are a bit better prepared next game. We were a long way below our best tonight and we still remained pretty competitive. If there are any positives for us at all, that’s probably it out of the game.”Inevitably, Ponting played down any suggestion that England have raised their one-day game to levels never before seen in his career – (“Maybe they are getting a few more results now, but that doesn’t necessarily mean there’s been a change in attitude …”), while Strauss maintained the admirable calm that has been England’s stock reaction to their recent efforts by pointing out that this was just one match out of five. But in the same week that Sachin Tendulkar suggested that Australia are as vulnerable as they’ve been for 20 years, the collective confidence of England’s cricket was almost as striking as Morgan’s individual effort.”It’s the first game, but we’ve done a lot of things right,” said Strauss. “The bowlers did a good job to restrict Australia to 267 and at the halfway mark I think we felt we were in front. But Australia being Australia they’ll come back at us hard in the next game, so let’s not pat ourselves on the back too much in this game. Ultimately it’s a very satisfying victory.”The more Morgan’s game develops, the more the comparisons with a certain MG Bevan will start to flood in, and Strauss didn’t pretend he hadn’t noticed the similarities between two left-handed icemen with an uncanny knack for producing a crucial boundary in some undefendable corner of the field.”We’ve been looking for a Michael Bevan-type character for quite a long time, and Morgs has shown a few times in both 50-over and 20-over cricket that he can play in a similar fashion, and perhaps a bit more aggressively than Bevan. We can’t rely on one person, we need to get contributions from 1 to 9 in the batting order, which is why it was good that Luke Wright came in and did a good job at No. 6 and Tim Bresnan at No. 7.”But ultimately, the first ODI was all about one man, and Ponting is already plotting to stop him. “He did everything right tonight, there’s no doubt about that. He didn’t offer us a chance, did he? He hit the ball very, very well.”The difference in those situations is how much pressure you can build up and how much you can put on them to hit a boundary. We didn’t do that tonight. He got his boundaries too easily, which allowed them to stay in front in the game. We have to make it harder for good players like him to find the boundary in those middle overs.”Against the slower guys he is unorthodox. You saw that tonight when [Nathan] Hauritz first came on. The way he reverse-sweeps makes it difficult to set fields for. But the way our quicks and our medium-pacers bowled to him tonight, we just gave him too many easy boundary options. There’s not too many guys in international cricket if you bowl them a half-volley they won’t put it away.”He hit a lot of cover-drives for four. We have to address that, and address it pretty quickly for the next game.”

World Cup 2015 likely to stay at 50 overs

The ICC is determined the World Cup will still be a 50-over competition in 2015, despite Cricket Australia considering a new two-innings one-day format

Brydon Coverdale10-Jun-2010

John Buchanan was Australia’s coach when they won the 2007 World Cup, but he remains adamant the 50-over format needs an overhaul•AFP

The ICC is confident the World Cup will still be a 50-over competition in 2015, despite Cricket Australia considering a new two-innings one-day format. The CA board will discuss the concept, which could involve two innings of either 20 of 25 overs, at a meeting this week with the view to testing it in state cricket this summer. The former coach of Australia, John Buchanan, has for many years been spruiking the idea of one-dayers split into two innings per side. He believes the future of the game lies in shorter formats, with Test cricket also retained, and 50-over matches fall into a no-man’s land between the two versions.”If Cricket Australia are contemplating making changes to it, I think congratulations to them for looking at that,” Buchanan told Cricinfo. “I’d support any changes that make it look more like the 20-over form. It has been in need of an overhaul for some time … and has been and will continue to lose popularity unless something is done with it.”Games won’t finish by the end of 10 overs into the second innings of a normal 50-over game, where one side has either dominated with the bat or been completely dominated by the ball and the game has really lost interest. By being able to quarterise the game it should enable the game to have longer life from a spectators’ point of view.”England and South Africa have already dropped 50-over cricket from their domestic schedule in favour of 40 overs, but Cricket Australia’s two-innings idea takes that concept even further. It could also mean that many players around the world will have limited exposure to the 50-over format, which in some countries will be played only at international level. That raises questions over the 2015 World Cup, to be hosted by Australia and New Zealand. But the ICC is confident the event will remain in its current 50-over format by the time that tournament rolls around.”The ICC is committed to the three forms of the game, being Test cricket, 50-over cricket and Twenty20 cricket,” an ICC spokesman told the . “We have a working party of eminent chief executives set up to look at the context and content of international cricket.”However, the ICC’s general manager of cricket, Dave Richardson, last year said he “quite liked” the idea of two-innings one-day games. “If it has been trialled successfully at domestic level, it may give the trial to give it the go-ahead at international level,” Richardson said last September.Part of the appeal of a split-innings one-day game is that the home team is guaranteed to bat during the more popular second session. There is often less interest in matches in Australia when Ricky Ponting’s men have batted first, with fans less likely to turn up to the game after work or watch it on television.”There’s no doubt in the world there’s time for some change,” Steve Crawley, the head of sport at Channel Nine, said in the . “There’s no doubt they [Cricket Australia] are up for it. You’ve got to hope they can lead the world.”The idea has also won support from some former players including Ian Chappell and Dean Jones. Chappell said the game would become more tactical when split into two innings per team, while Jones called it “a fantastic idea”.

Arfield, Aribo & Lundstram Rangers worst

Glasgow Rangers kept up the pace in the title race with a 2-0 win at home in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday night.

Goals from James Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos were enough to give Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team all three points at Ibrox, but it was not always plain sailing for the hosts, as Leon Balogun was forced off through injury after just 15 minutes, while they also managed to pick up three yellow cards, and gave up 12 shots on their goal in total (SofaScore).

Using statistical experts SofaScore, The Transfer Tavern have now analysed which three Teddy Bears (to have played at least 45 minutes) may not have been as pleased with their own individual performance as others. Could they be worried about their places in Gio’s XI?

John Lundstram

Admittedly joint with Calvin Bassey in terms of rating (seven), Lundstram ranks in third here as the former managed to keep a clean sheet as a defender, and was forced to move into the centre-back position after Borna Barisic came on for the injured Balogun.

The former Sheffield United man meanwhile lost out on five of his duels and was dribbled past twice, and also failed to record a single shot on goal or block any shots on the defensive side, mustering little impact on either side of the ball.

He also lost possession of the ball nine times, hardly ideal for a player tasked with adding control and solidity in front of the back four.

Joe Aribo

With a 6.7 overall rating, Aribo ranked as the second-worst Light Blue on the pitch.

The Nigeria international lost eight duels, the most out of any of his teammates, while he also had no shots, successful dribbles, clearances or interceptions, giving the ball away a total of 12 times, the joint-second most from any Gers player.

Scott Arfield

Van Bronckhorst has publicly spoken of his desire to hand Arfield a new contract, but the Canada international did little to make his case for a shiny new deal here, ranking as RFC’s worst player on the night with a 6.5 rating given.

The central midfielder was unsuccessful in seven of his duels, while also never managing a shot on target, dribble or cross, as he lost the ball on 11 separate occasions in the match.

Ainda assim, o Verdão segue 100% no Paulista.

Rangers told Aaron Ramsey deal is unlikely

A concerning Rangers transfer verdict has emerged regarding the January signing of Aaron Ramsey…

What’s the talk?

Former Gers defender Alan Hutton has suggested that the midfielder may have his eye on joining another club at the end of the season, casting doubts over a permanent Ibrox deal.

The 37-year-old told Football Insider:

“It ticks all the boxes at the moment as Rangers are only paying a portion of his wages. Ramsey can come in, get the football he needs to get firing again and get back into that Wales squad. He’ll then see where it takes him in the summer.

“If he sets the league alight and has an incredible rest of the season, then maybe he’ll look to move on somewhere else. Rangers will be looking for an incredible deal, but it’s all going to come down to figures.

“What he’s on now is way outside the ballpark, so unless there’s a deal to be done – you really can’t see it happening in the summer. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Gutted

Rangers fans will surely be gutted by this verdict, as it suggests that there is only a slim chance of Ramsey signing on a permanent basis in the summer.

He is currently on loan until the end of the season and Hutton has claimed that the Welshman will be playing for his future at another club, rather than at Ibrox.

Whilst there is nothing wrong with Ramsey’s motivations as he may have the ambition to play in one of Europe’s top leagues again before he retires, this claim will still frustrate Gers supporters who are hoping to see him as a full-time member of the squad. He could be a fantastic player for the Light Blues, and keeping him beyond the summer would be a major boost to Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad.

The Wales international has one assist in three games for Rangers so far, setting up Filip Helander for a headed goal against Annan Athletic in the Scottish Cup.

However, he has only played 29 minutes, across two games, in the Premiership as he builds up his match fitness, and he is yet to showcase his quality at league level.

His career record suggests that he will be able to make a big impact when he is up to speed. He produced 65 goals and 65 assists in 371 matches for Arsenal and then managed six goals and six assists in 70 matches for Juventus.

This shows that he can regularly deliver with goal contributions from midfield, and it could get Gers fans excited about what he could do for their team in the coming months, even if a deal beyond the summer seems unlikely.
