Katich and Co deliver for Australia

Australia’s marks out of 10 for the 2-0 series win over New Zealand

Peter English01-Apr-2010Australia swept past New Zealand in two games to maintain their unbeaten Test summer. Marcus North confirmed his spot while Ryan Harris and Phillip Hughes delivered promising performances for the future. However, the result was set up by a core group of Simon Katich, Michael Clarke, Mitchell Johnson and Doug Bollinger.Simon Katich was on top of New Zealand – and Australia’s run-list – during the two Tests•Getty Images

Simon Katich
Consistent and committed, he led the run list with 291 and was a key reason for Australia’s strong finish in Hamilton. His 88 carried them in the first innings and his 106 ensured they regained all the power in the second. Still can’t crack that massive score, but is an essential in any conditions.Mitchell Johnson
Started slowly but finished on a high with 10 wickets for the match in Hamilton. The pitch was flat and lifeless, especially when New Zealand bowled, but Johnson made the batsmen jump and hop and wince while operating around 150kph. He started with 4 for 59 and wrapped up the game before lunch on the final day with 6 for 73. Deserves his rest before the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean later in the month.Doug Bollinger
Captured his second five-wicket haul of the summer in the first innings at Wellington and gained breakthroughs in every subsequent innings. His movement, angle and bounce were always a threat and he narrowly out-performed Johnson with 12 victims at 23. Has become a popular and important member of the side and proved two left-armers can succeed in the same Australian team.8.5
Michael Clarke
Proved he could cope with anything after the public break-up of his engagement. Returned for the first Test to post a personal best of 168, winning widespread admiration for his mental and physical deeds. Added 28, 63 and the wicket of Mathew Sinclair to provide more value in the second Test. The captaincy succession plan remains in place.Marcus North
Saved his career with his century in Wellington and backed up with a much more fluent 90 in Hamilton in a pressure-relieving return. The selectors want the No.6 involved in the Ashes and he has the winter to work on some technical flaws that led to his extended slump before the series. Remains a boom or bust player, but is currently paying off.7
Ryan Harris
The surprise performer of the summer who found his feet at Test level after jumping the queue through a series of stand-out one-day performances. A skiddy bowler who can be very fast, he gained six wickets on debut in Wellington and followed up with another three in the second game. Did not look out of place despite a limited season that began with knee surgery, and will look to cement an Ashes spot.5
Michael Hussey
Was workmanlike without being fully comfortable. A 67 in the second innings in Hamilton was the high mark of his collection of 93 runs, but there was a potentially worrying pattern in his dismissals. All three exits were the results of edges behind.Brad Haddin
Finished the series with a 40-ball 48 but had limited opportunities with the bat due to Australia’s firing top order. Collected six catches in the second Test, but was untidy at times behind the stumps after a long campaign.4.5
Phillip Hughes
Showed his explosiveness in the second innings at Wellington after exposing his vulnerability in the first. With 86 not out from 75 balls he produced an awesome performance to finish the 10-wicket victory, but won’t be a true star until he can deliver consistent displays on the opening day. Must now wait for Katich or Watson to be injured, or Watson to be moved down the order.Shane Watson
Got too excited in the second Test after missing the first game with a hip strain suffered in the one-day series. After such a stunning summer he thinks he can do anything – often he can – and departed both times to pull shots to Tim Southee. With time will find the balance between domination and recklessness.4
Ricky Ponting
Still capable of brilliance, but is unquestionably a wonderful batsman on the wane. His judgement – and leg speed – has diminished and opposition attacks can now target him with the short ball and airy hits to the legside from straighter deliveries. Two run-outs gave him 13 dismissals of that type, which is the most in Test history, and restricted his scores to 41, 22 and 6.Nathan Hauritz
Won respect for his three wickets in Wellington in 49 second-innings overs, about half of which were delivered into a gale-force wind. Didn’t seem as comfortable as he had been at home, which was highlighted by 16 no-balls, and had only four victims. Contributed with 41 not out in the declaration at Hamilton.

O mal estar durou pouco.

Rangers poised to make Alex Lowry offer

A big update has emerged on Rangers gem Alex Lowry regarding the Glasgow giants’ plans for his future at Ibrox…

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Record’s Scott Burns, the Gers are prepared to offer a contract to the midfielder in order to keep him at the club in the long term.

The report claims that they have been in talks with him and are now set to make their attempt to pin him down to an extension, with his current terms set to expire at the end of next season.

Van Bronckhorst will be buzzing

Giovanni van Bronckhorst will surely be left buzzing by this news, as a fresh deal for the youngster would avoid the club losing him to another team on a free transfer. Other clubs may have become alerted to Lowry’s potential availability within the next 18 months if Rangers were slack and did not try to extend his contract, which could have led to them seeing him leave for nothing.

This would have been particularly frustrating for Van Bronckhorst after he handed the midfielder his first-team debut against Stirling Albion last week. He scored in the 4-0 win over the League Two side in the Scottish Cup, having clearly made enough of an impact in training to convince the head coach to give him a chance.

In his last nine games for Rangers and Scotland at youth and senior level, the teenager has produced four goals and two assists from central midfield. This suggests that he is enjoying a fine season and starting to show that he could have the potential to become a key first-team player for the club further down the line.

Scoring on his debut against Stirling Albion will not have done Lowry’s chances of further involvement any harm, and Van Bronckhorst could be tempted to test him out in the Premiership between now and the end of the campaign. His development could be aided by minutes in the Scottish top flight, whether that comes from the start or off the bench for a cameo.

The 18-year-old could have a bright future at Ibrox and that is why the Dutch head coach will be buzzing with the club’s efforts to ensure that he does not depart. He will surely be excited to work with the young midfielder on the training ground to hone his skills and mould him into the perfect player for his system, which will hopefully happen in the coming months and years.

Ele fica!

Bowlers and Ganguly knock out Rajasthan

Kolkata’s bowlers knocked out Rajasthan from the IPL and kept their semi-final hopes alive

How they were out
Jaidev Unadkat took three wickets, including the important one of Yusuf Pathan•Indian Premier League

Kolkata Knight Riders’ bowlers knocked out Rajasthan Royals and kept their semi-final hopes alive by setting up a comprehensive eight-wicket win. They limited Rajasthan to a below-par score on a slowish pitch, and Sourav Ganguly backed them up with another significant contribution to push Kolkata to 12 points. The effort overcame an intimidating start from Shane Watson, who began with a series of boundaries, and the loss of early wickets in the chase. Kolkata, however, face a tough task in ensuring a qualification for the knockout stage, as they have to beat a formidable Mumbai Indians in their next game and by a big margin to boost their negative net run-rate.Watson, opening for the first time this IPL, took little time settling in to his preferred position in limited-overs cricket, triggering a confident start with a series of boundaries, feeding off some indisciplined bowling. The Kolkata bowlers often pitched too short or were countered by some superior batting by Watson, who created opportunities to find the boundaries with ease. But the damage caused in the first seven overs, where Rajasthan had raced to 57 without loss, was compensated for by Kolkata’s seamers, who, realising the sluggish nature of the track, cut down on pace and used their variations well. Laxmi Shukla played a prominent role in the first two dismissals, bowling Watson with a slower legcutter and then flinging himself to his left to snap a blinder to send back Naman Ojha off Jaidev Unadkat, who finished with a three-for.Kolkata’s ground-fielding remained poor for much of the innings but their catching won them crucial wickets. Sourav Ganguly’s brilliant effort to get rid of Yusuf Pathan was among the best catches in the tournament, running back several yards from midwicket, keeping his eyes on the ball and falling full stretch to hold on. When Ashok Dinda had Adam Voges hole out to long-on in the 14th over, four out of five genuine batsmen had fallen prey to the slower ball. While the boundaries had dried up, Rajasthan could have still worked the field and rotated the strike to preserve enough wickets for the surge at the death. But their batsmen consumed an inordinate number of dot balls – including a wicket-maiden by Shane Bond where he dismissed Aaron Finch – to make just 31 runs in the last six overs for the loss of five wickets. The conditions were difficult to handle, with Kolkata’s bowlers consistently slipping in slower cutters and the ball keeping low and the middle order, featuring three changes from the previous game, struggled in the wake of the increasing pressure. Abhishek Raut and Paras Dogra fell in their attempt to step up, and Dinda’s last over involved two more wickets, as Rajasthan, in a must-win game, disappointed with the bat.Kolkata needed an attacking start in their pursuit of a big win to propel their net run-rate, but were deprived by the early loss of Brendon McCullum and Chris Gayle. Ganguly had warmed up well with three boundaries, but Kamran Khan’s double-strike in the third over – he snared McCullum with a full toss and bowled Gayle through the gate – prompted a change in approach with Kolkata opting for a game of caution, postponing their acceleration. Each of the next five overs featured a boundary, but only 22 were scored off them as most balls, barring the bad ones that were dispatched, were pushed towards fielders inside the circle. The quest to pierce the field and hunt for more singles was evident in the first couple of overs following the time-out, and it was in the 12th over that Ganguly displayed the belated aggression, making room and charging down the track to strike Yusuf for two boundaries. He and Cheteshwar Pujara then followed up with a six each in the next over from Voges. Ganguly hammered consecutive fours off Siddharth Trivedi and helped smote 15 in Faiz Fazal’s only over to help Kolkata past their target with 23 balls to spare, but the result, despite its convincing margin, may yet prove inadequate for Kolkata when the final four are determined.

Batsmen put Yorkshire in command

Yorkshire moved into a commanding position thanks to a surprisingly attacking declaration from Hampshire captain Nic Pothas at the Rose Bowl

Yorkshire moved into a commanding position thanks to a surprisingly attacking declaration from Hampshire captain Nic Pothas at the Rose Bowl. Resuming on 162 for 3, Hampshire progressed serenely to 200 during an overcast morning session, with Neil McKenzie going past 50 and youngster James Vince also looking in decent touch.A comical mix-up ended Vince’s innings and the pair’s 57-run partnership, when both batsmen ended up at the same end after Vince called for a third run but McKenzie – the senior partner in the middle – turned the offer down. Hampshire’s middle and lower order all chipped in with useful contributions but no batsman could go on to contribute the big score Hampshire needed to get close to Yorkshire’s first innings total of 415.For Yorkshire, Adil Rashid was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4 for 62 from just under 19 overs of attacking, controlled legspin bowling. Sean Ervine (20), Pothas (23), Dominic Cork (26) and David Balcombe (30) all squandered good starts in the face of some disciplined Yorkshire bowling as Hampshire limped towards 350 and an extra batting point. As soon as that target was reached – and with his side still 64 runs behind – Pothas declared the innings closed, in a bid to force the positive result Hampshire so desperately need to climb off the bottom of the County Championship Division One table.Adam Lyth and Joe Sayers, so impressive in forging a big opening partnership on the first day, began Yorkshire’s second innings in a similarly assured vein, accumulating a partnership of 36 before Balcombe had Sayers caught at point by Michael Carberry.Yorkshire’s batting line-up twice suffered collapses during their stop-start first innings, but any hope Hampshire had of a similar flurry of quick wickets was extinguished by some dogged batting from Lyth and partner Anthony McGrath.Lyth added a half-century to his ton in the first innings, moving past 800 Championship runs for the season in the process, while McGrath showed the sort of form which saw him gain England honours in 2003 to smash a 66-ball 50.The pair survived unscathed until the close, guiding Yorkshire to 152 for 1 and a commanding lead of 216 runs, leaving Yorkshire in a prime position from which to attack the Hampshire bowling and try to force an unlikely win.

Celtic: Callum McGregor has ‘a chance’ to feature

Celtic captain Callum McGregor could feature against rivals Rangers this evening, Anthony Joseph reports.

The Lowdown: McGregor a regular under Ange

McGregor, who Ange Postecoglou praised for the ‘massive’ role the midfielder plays both on and off the pitch, has made 33 appearances this season.

The 28-year-old had to be replaced against Alloa Athletic last month with a facial injury, which has kept him out of the wins against Hearts and Dundee United.

Postecoglou initially labelled the injury as ‘significant’ and expected the club captain to be out long term, but it seems as if he could make a surprise return this evening.

The Latest: Joseph’s post

Joseph took to Twitter on Tuesday ahead of the crucial Glasgow Derby to relay comments from Postecoglou on McGregor.

He posted:

“Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has told Sky Sports News that captain Callum McGregor has been recovering well from his facial injury and there is “a chance” he could be involved tomorrow against Rangers.”

The Verdict: Brilliant

Postecoglou is expected to make a late call on McGregor, who would have to play with a protective mask, but it’s brilliant to see that he has a chance.

Some Celtic supporters may have been fearing the worst when Postecoglou labelled the injury as ‘significant’ just last week, but he is back on the training pitch and doesn’t seem to be far away from a full return.

Hopefully, he’ll be able to feature in some capacity tonight, with a win at Parkhead taking the Hoops back to the top of the Scottish Premiership.
