Lara calls for better infrastructure in West Indies

Brian Lara has welcomed the increasing international exposure that young cricketers in the West Indies are gaining by participating in the IPL and in Australia. However, he said that the trend was a reflection of a poor infrastructure in the Caribbean for grooming young talent to play at the highest level. Lara, while proposing the establishment of a centralised cricket academy, also called for a change in personnel among those running the game in the region to bring about a revival.”We’ve always had the talent in the Caribbean,” Lara told reporters in Mumbai. “The exposure internationally for them is going to be very good. That’s something we had in the seventies. A lot of our cricketers then, like Sir Viv Richards, Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes, they all went to England to play county cricket. So, obviously, the opportunity for our youngsters to play in the IPL, in Australia or England is very exciting and promising.”But it means we are very weak in how we handle our own talent in the Caribbean. We have not set up any proper academy to take care of them. And that is where we are falling down in our support for our teenagers. If the Indians or the English are making that opportunity available, I think it’s good.”While in London recently, Lara said the current set-up in the West Indies relied heavily on the natural ability of players, which was inadequate to compensate for the absence of a proper institutional structure. “I believe that our structure is not good,” Lara said. “We do not have the academies to support the youngsters and our team is still built on natural ability and in sport nowadays natural ability is a small part of it.”The amount of technology that is happening and how people are learning about the game much faster, I believe we need to head in that direction and there’s nowhere on the horizon that I’ve seen where we have taken that step.”A centralised academy for the various islands playing cricket in the Caribbean, Lara said, was the way to go forward. “I think the main thing is that we need to set up academies, and not necessarily every single island having one, but I think we should have a centralised academy where all the youngsters come together under good coaches.”Maybe past players, [it] does not matter who the coaches are as long as they are well qualified and get them working together. I believe if we do that then maybe five, 10 years down the line you can see some semblance of what we were doing in the past.”At present I think we are just doing what we did 20-25 years ago and hoping that the kids with the talent will come through and we will beat people around the world, and that’s not happening, as you see.”Lara said he was keen in getting involved in West Indies cricket, and added that the inclusion of “new heads” was necessary in sparking a turnaround in fortunes for the game in the region. “I think it’s important that at some point in time I do get involved with West Indies cricket,” Lara said. “I am willing and able, whenever it’s necessary. Obviously, the present administration doesn’t see it fit yet.”Even if it did, I’d love to see a change. We’ve got a lot of the older heads who’ve been there for quite a long time, and things have not been working properly. We need some new heads, and some astute thinkers coming out and trying to get our cricket back together.”Among the new talents from the region, Lara singled out Adrian Barath for praise. “I think he is a special talent,” he said. “To score a hundred on debut against Australia, the best team in the world, shows that he has something and hopefully he can carry and achieve bigger things in the future.”The World Twenty20 gets underway in the West Indies towards the end of April, but Lara believed, despite the home advantage, the hosts would struggle to go far on current form. “In reality, the way we’ve been playing … I mean we just lost a Twenty20 against Zimbabwe,” he said. “I don’t think that will take us far in a World Cup against strong nations. We’ve got to do a lot of homework and we’ve got to get our game in order.”Of course, we have the advantage of playing at home, knowing the conditions but a lot of players and countries have done so over the years. So I don’t think they’ll be intimidated by that fact. But I believe if we do play good cricket over that period of time, we are capable like any other country to win the World Cup and I’ll be praying and hoping that we could do it.”

Gerrard reveals Trezeguet latest

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has revealed the latest regarding the future of Trezeguet, who is currently competing at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for Egypt.

What’s the latest?

According to the Birmingham Mail, Gerrard has hinted at the possibility of a move away from Villa Park for the winger this month.

Speaking to the media, the 41-year-old said: “Trezeguet’s a unique situation. He’s been out for seven months or roundabout. He’s come back and has obviously had a short cameo and has gone to the African Cup of Nations.

“We hope he stays fit, healthy and plays well and we’ll analyse that situation as the weeks go by. We’ve had a conversation in terms of what he needs next and he obviously needs game.

“He could find that challenging here so we’ll be respectful to him and we’ll see what lands from now until the end of the window but, as it stands now, he’ll be returning after the AFCON.”

As of yet, there has been no indication as to where the 27-year-old could end up. However, with the acquisition of Philippe Coutinho, Emi Buendia improving his output and Leon Bailey still to return from injury, it appears that the Egypt winger is now well down the pecking order at Villa Park.

Gerrard must axe Trezeguet

With Villa looking to make the next step with marquee signings such as that of Coutinho, lesser-seen players Trezeguet will probably fall further down the reckoning.

The Egyptian recently returned from a long-term knee injury and came off of the bench in Villa’s 2-1 defeat to Brentford to make his first appearance of the season before departing for AFCON. However, despite being on the pitch for just ten minutes, the 27-year-old went viral for a shocking dive.

In attempt to win a penalty, the winger flung himself to ground despite minimal contact, with Alan Shearer labelling the act “embarrassing”.

With Villa currently paying Trezeguet £47k-per week, the Midlands club could save money by axing the 27-year-old, especially with him becoming a fringe player in Gerrard’s squad and frankly stealing a living.

Since his move to Villa Park from Turkish outfit Kasimpasa in July 2019, the Egyptian has made 64 appearances and scored just nine goals whilst registering a further five assists. However, prior to the Brentford game, the 27-year-old hadn’t played a single minute of football since sustaining a knee injury in a 2-1 defeat at Liverpool back in April, while he made just 12 league starts last season.

With Gerrard and Villa looking to make ambitious signings, current squad players look set to see their game-time further decrease. Trezeguet is one of those, so the time could be right for the club to get him off their books if a decent offer comes in.

Western Australia must score the biggest total of the match to overtake Tasmania after they were set 275 for victory at the WACA. The Tigers were dismissed late on the third day for 246 and the Warriors knocked 40 from their target in 16 overs but lost both openers to Adam Maher.Liam Davis edged to third slip on 13 shortly before stumps and Wes Robinson (20) went lbw in the second last over. The nightwatchman Nathan Coulter-Nile and the captain Marcus North will start again on the final morning. Both teams want a win to keep the pressure on the leaders Victoria and Queensland, but Tasmania were battling in their second innings until Daniel Marsh arrived with a crucial contribution of 60. Marsh lifted the pace after Tim Paine (27) and Xavier Doherty (0) departed quickly and surged them forward from the trouble of 6 for 135.A six came off Steve Magoffin and Marsh also found the boundary eight times before he fell to Luke Pomersbach just before tea. Adam Griffith added 25 before he was bowled by Brad Knowles and Brendan Drew extended the lead with a valuable 39. Knowles led the hosts with 3 for 60 while Coulter-Nile and North chipped in with two victims each.Tasmania, who earned a 28-run lead on first innings, resumed on 1 for 31, and lost Alex Doolan (10) when he offered no shot to Magoffin. George Bailey managed a single in his 37-ball innings and there was further trouble when Ed Cowan left with 41 after chipping a catch back to the bowler North. The Warriors are fifth on 12 points, one behind Tasmania, and eight from the second-placed Bulls. A tense final day on a pitch still being kind to the bowlers will determine which side stays in contention.

Traore to stay at Wolves until the summer?

Wolves winger Adama Traore is reportedly happy to stay put at Molineux until the summer before potentially returning to his former club Barcelona.

The Lowdown: Constant exit rumours

The 25-year-old has been continually linked with a move away from Wolves in the January transfer window, with Bruno Lage seemingly happy to see him leave.

The likes of Liverpool and Tottenham have both been tipped to sign Traore in the near future but nothing concrete has materialised yet.

Another update has now emerged regarding the winger’s future as the saga takes another twist.

The Latest: Summer move instead?

According to Sport, Traore sees returning to Barca as a ‘priority’ and is willing to wait until the end of the season for the move to come to fruition, with the report describing it as a ‘feasible’ transfer.

It is claimed that the Spanish giants see the Wolves winger as a possible replacement for Ousmane Dembele, should the Frenchman move on in the summer.

The Verdict: Matter of time

Traore has had huge praise down the years, with Jurgen Klopp once hailing him as ‘exceptional’, but it seems evident that Lage doesn’t see a long-term future for the Spain international at Wolves.

The speedy winger finally scored his first goal of the season in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Southampton but it is a damning indictment of his end product that it has taken 22 appearances for that to happen.

A summer exit feels best for all parties, ensuring that Wolves don’t lose a good squad player in the middle of the campaign while allowing them to receive a healthy fee which can go towards new signings for next season.

Leeds: Kevin Phillips reacts to John Buckley interest

Pundit Kevin Phillips has been reacting to Leeds United’s interest in Blackburn Rovers midfielder John Buckley, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Midfielders wanted

Victor Orta is thought to be ‘busy’ when it comes to searching for midfield reinforcements at Elland Road, with the Whites after RB Salzburg’s Brenden Aaronson.

Leeds have had a £15m bid turned down for the American but are intent on signing the 21-year-old before the end of the month.

Buckley is another player of interest to Leeds, with Burnley also keen on the 22-year-old, who can play as a central, defensive or right midfielder.

The Latest: Phillips reacts

Phillips, who regularly features for Sky Sports, was talking to Football Insider regarding Leeds’ interest in Buckley.

He labelled Buckley being versatile as a ‘bonus’ and labelled a possible deal as ‘big’.

“Blackburn have been in great form this season and he’s been a big part of that. If you get a good player from a club that is flying in the Championship midway through the season you’ve done well.

“He’s a centre-midfielder which is a position Leeds desperately need to strengthen in. He’s versatile as well which is a bonus, so it’s a big signing if they can do it.

“At the end of the day though, it’s always a gamble signing a player from the Championship. It’s a jump to the Premier League. It could be a signing that pays off though.

“From Blackburn’s point of view, there is no way [Tony] Mowbray will let any of those players go on the cheap.”

The Verdict: Shrewd move?

It seems as if Leeds will need to spend big on Aaronson after having a £15m offer rejected. Should they manage to bring the American to Elland Road, then perhaps funds will be limited when it comes to the club’s search for a deeper midfielder.

Buckley could be the perfect addition then considering his £720,000 Transfermarkt valuation, but you’d expect Leeds may have to pay way more than that figure given he has been a regular in an impressive Rovers side this season.

A fee under eight figures could still be a shrewd move in the long run, with Buckley possibly Marcelo Bielsa’s dream player after already playing in eight different positions in 27 games in 2021/22.
