Making a £4.5m move to Celtic back in the summer of 2020, expectations at Parkhead were high for Vasilis Barkas, with the Bhoys handing the goalkeeper a four-year deal believed to be worth around £20k-per-week.

However, after making just 23 appearances in all competitions, only one of which has come under the management of Ange Postecoglou this season, reports have claimed that the club are ready to cut their losses on the Greece international this January.

It is not difficult to see why, as, over his 15 Premiership appearances last time out, Barkas made an average of just one save and conceded 0.7 goals per game, returns that saw the £2.52m-rated 27-year-old earn a seasonal SofaScore rating of just 6.79 – ranking him as the club’s joint ninth-worst performer in the league.

However, rather than splashing the cash on a new backup to Joe Hart this winter, it would appear wise for Postecoglou to take a closer look at one of the club’s up and coming prospects between the sticks – in the shape of Tobi Oluwayemi.

Having already been called up to first-team training by Postecoglou, as well as being selected to feature on the bench – ahead of Barkas – in Celtic’s Europa League campaign this season, it is clear that the 18-year-old shot-stopper is a player the Greek-Australian coach has high hopes for.

Indeed, speaking prior to the Bhoys’ 3-2 victory over Real Betis earlier this month, the 56-year-old manager said of Oluwayemi: “Stevie Woods, our goalkeeping coach, rates him very highly. We’ve had him up in training with the team and he’s shown some good qualities.

“With all of these guys, we try and include them as much as we can and give them that experience. Toby was on the [Europa League] list so it gives him a chance to travel with the team and get the experience.”

As such, while the England U19 international is yet to make a single appearance in senior football, it would very much appear as if he is a player who has the potential to one day go on to become Celtic’s number one, an objective that would only seem to be helped by him being included in the Hoops first-team squad on a much more regular basis.

So, should Celtic indeed move the 27-year-old Barkas who Tam McManus dubbed a “horrendous” player on this winter, it would seem a very intelligent move for Postecoglou to unleash the 18-year-old Oluwayemi in the Greek’s place.

The servers which dealt with the ticket machines, and over which the ground had no control, crashed which meant that the punters couldn’t be processed. Thankfully, in a superb piece of pro-active thinking, the ground authorities threw open the gates and allowed the fans in for free. Duminy looked a little embarrassed, Mickey Arthur wore a broad grin on the dressing room balcony and all Collingwood could do was look forlornly at the crease. Speaking to FI, the Lilywhites source believes that Tottenham’s centre-back will ‘definitely’ leave north London in January – barring a serious injury to in-form defender Eric Dier.

“I think Rodon will definitely go in January,” he explained to the outlet.

“The only way he will stay is if Dier picks up a long-term injury. On the face of it, that would cement his place in the side.”

The Verdict: Right call?

Lauded as a ‘special player’ by Wales Online correspondent Ian Mitchelmore, Rodon could still have a bright future at Spurs, and we believe the best course of action could be a loan spell away in the winter window.

The defender impressed in flashes last season and showcased real potential at times, and at 24-years-old, there is a case to be made that he will only improve over time.

According to WhoScored, over his eight Premier League starts last year, he even managed to make more interceptions per 90 on average (1.8) than any Spurs player in the top flight – showcasing his obvious quality.

As he is arguably wasted on the bench, a temporary spell away from N17 for Rodon could suit all parties.

According to the Express, the north London outfit are ready to battle their arch-rivals to the signature of the Brighton and Hove Albion star this month.

After picking up a long-term injury, the 21-year-old dynamo has quickly re-established his place in Graham Potter’s side and is now attracting interest from both Spurs and Arsenal.

Conte is expected to offload Matt Doherty before the transfer deadline and is now looking at Lamptey as a potential replacement, though the summer window seems more plausible as Albion want around £50m to let him go.

Perfect fit

Given the Italian’s system at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Lamptey would surely be an absolute dream for Conte, especially if Doherty does move on this window.

And with Emerson Royal’s form being a little inconsistent, the England U21 international should not find it hard to break into the starting XI upon arrival.

Since his breakthrough in 2019, the £16.2m-rated dynamo has averaged 3.3 dribbles, 2.5 tackles, 1.8 interceptions and 1.1 key passes per 90 minutes in the Premier League, per WhoScored, who also state his strengths as being his short passing and dribbling – two key components for a wing-back.

“Terrific prospect” and “phenomenal young talent” is how the Daily Mirror’s chief football writer John Cross once described the marauding Seagulls defender, whilst his teammate Pascal Groß dubbed him a “special boy” and “top class” to talkSPORT.

Conte’s system thrives when a wing-back can do the business at either end of the pitch and it seems as if Lamptey fits the bill greatly, so sporting director Fabio Paratici must look to beat the Gunners to his signature.

£50m may be a hefty investment to make but on the above evidence, there won’t be many better homegrown talents out there for that price.

McKay has taken two wickets in each of his two ODIs so far, and was particularly impressive in the second game against Bangladesh in Dunedin, conceding just 17 runs off his ten overs.”He was definitely the quickest guy I faced in the HRV (Twenty20) Cup,” Vettori told the . “We took a chance on him because of that pace. I think he does have it. I think he can be on a par with Shane Bond when he gets it right, and that makes a real difference when you step up to international level.”McKay made a late entry into the national side, at 29, after entering the first-class scene in 2002-03. He played five seasons for Auckland before shifting to Wellington in 2009-10. He was the joint leading wicket-taker in the one-day competition when the national selectors came calling.McKay bowled to Vettori during a HRV Cup match between Wellington and Northern Districts in Mt Maunganui last month.
