Taylor, Asif shine on engrossing first day

It was an engrossing first day of the series with New Zealand claiming the slight upper hand thanks to Pakistan’s poor fielding

Mohammad Asif – he of the persuasive wrist, the smug smile, the quietly provocative mannerisms – was back. Ross Taylor – scratchy start followed by spurts of arrogant strokeplay followed by spells of quiet prudence – played one of his more mature knocks at Test level. The support cast was there too: Mohammad Aamer and Saeed Ajmal, a surprise success on a first-day seaming track, kept the batsmen grounded; Martin Guptill got his maiden fifty and started New Zealand’s recovery, and Brendon McCullum and Daniel Vettori thwarted the bowlers in the final session. Result: an engrossing day’s play with New Zealand claiming a slim advantage thanks to Pakistan’s poor fielding.UDRS debuts

Two similar appeals, two different decisions, but same end results. That’s how the new Umpire Decision Review System’s first day in Test cricket went. In the 41st over of New Zealand’s innings, Mohammad Asif bowled an offcutter to Ross Taylor and the appeal was turned down by Billy Doctrove. Pakistan asked for a review, and the replay showed Taylor was hit just outside the line. Another appeal from Asif – the offcutter hit Brendon McCullum’s pads – in the last over of the day got a positive response from Simon Taufel. This time the batsman didn’t agree with the umpire, and replays against suggested he was hit just outside the line of off stump, and the decision was overturned.

It was no surprise that the day should have begun eventfully. Mohammad Yousuf became the first ICL player to captain a national side, Vettori perhaps the first captain to call at the toss in a Test being played in his country. Then the start itself. Aamer must have grown up – if that is possible for someone aged 17 – watching Pakistani bowlers demolish New Zealand in New Zealand with swinging yorkers, and he did the same. The first ball of the series swung into Tim McIntosh, who got hit on his boot on the full. The ball then went on to the bat and through to the stumps.Guptill looked to counter-attack, driving emphatically, using the tiny straight boundaries and the third-man gap to his advantage. New Zealand raced to 22 in four overs, Guptill to 18 off 17 balls. All three Mohammads then combined superbly for immediate gains: Yousuf put in a fourth slip to block the third-man gap and Asif and Aamer pulled back the lengths a touch, having realised there was no swing to be had. Result: Asif caught Daniel Flynn on the crease, and an inside edge made it 27 for 2.Taylor and Guptill then dug deep into their reserves of patience and judgement, and a bit of luck, to keep the menacing Pakistan seamers at bay through their 117-run partnership. Aamer, Asif and Umar Gul hit near-perfect lengths in the first session, bowling just short of a length and outside off, and letting the seam do the rest. Asif was especially dangerous, getting the ball to both hold its line and dart back in.During that testing period, both Taylor and Guptill played out of their skins. Taylor kept getting beaten outside off with Asif getting it to seam either way. Thrice he took his eyes off Aamer’s deliveries, and took body blows. When Gul bowled seven consecutive maidens, he hardly scored; his score read 2 off 29 and 6 off 44 at two different stages of the innings.Guptill, too, had to get used to not getting anything to drive, and with the third-man gap plugged, scoring became an afterthought. Gul drew Guptill forward on the defence, and then, suddenly, mixed in the shorter ones. One such short delivery that seamed away a touch got the edge but Imran Farhat dropped it at first slip. Five runs later, it was Gul doing the dropping: at the fine-leg boundary, a top-edge off Aamer, and Guptill had survived twice on 26.After those two lives, both Taylor and Guptill opened up, and simultaneously Pakistan relaxed a bit. Taylor punched well off the back foot, and Guptill got the driving length too. Post lunch, Yousuf didn’t get the seamers to work in tandem. Saeed Ajmal bowled 13 straight overs in the second session. Given that there wasn’t much wind, the move seemed a bit inexplicable. But Ajmal would go on and get the most important wicket of the day. Before that, though, Taylor overtook Guptill at the 50-mark. Unlike Guptill, Taylor managed to play forcing shots off the back foot, and during one period of acceleration that included a slog-swept six, he went from 19 off 74 to 51 off 97. Things would have been rosier for New Zealand had Aamer not struck in the first over of his third spell. He first hit Taylor on the back of the head, then got Guptill to top-edge another.Taylor had reached 64 then, and looked good to go by his conversion rate (five fifties and four hundreds before this). This time, though, in his 90s, Taylor got edgy and went to drive Ajmal against the spin, far from his body and edged to first slip – six short of his century. With the ball soft, and the pitch eased out, both the batsmen missed out on a real chance to dominate the bowling. It was the best possible time for Peter Fulton and Grant Elliot to start their innings; they survived nine-odd overs before Asif turned the day again. In two overs he removed them both, the length being crucial again. Both batsmen were kept on the crease: Fulton got one that stayed a touch low, Elliott one that moved in, made him play uncertainly, and took the edge.Time, then, for Pakistan’s hallowed fielding to raise its head: Farhat – still in the slips – dropped a tough chance from Vettori when the latter hadn’t even scored. McCullum and Vettori went from strength to strength, and batted New Zealand through to stumps, having added unbeaten 65 for the seventh wicket. Just in case there wasn’t enough drama already, the review system proved Simon Taufel wrong. The penultimate ball of the day was a sharp offcutter from Asif, an appeal that was upheld. McCullum challenged it, and was seen being hit outside the line of off.

Ele soma quatro gols e quatro assistências no ano.

Edinson Cavani set to stay at Man Utd

Manchester United have received a potentially significant boost over striker Edinson Cavani as the January transfer window fast approaches.

What’s the story?

According to well-known journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils appear set to keep hold of the 34-year-old over the coming months, despite interest from abroad.

He tweeted: “There are no talks between Edinson Cavani and Corinthians board, as things stand. Timão dream of Cavani but there’s nothing advanced. #MUFC Many European clubs are interested in Cavani but no decision has yet been made with Manchester United for January transfer window.”

The Uruguay international’s current contract is set to expire at the end of 2021/22, meaning an imminent exit could be on the cards, although new interim manager Ralf Rangnick may have alternative plans.

Man Utd fans will be ecstatic

Although Cavani has featured in just 274 minutes of first-team action this season due to several injuries, a large section of United supporters will be ecstatic at Romano’s latest revelation.

That’s because the South American hitman has the potential to be a crucial player under the tutelage of Rangnick, with their styles appearing to be a perfect match.

Throughout his career, Cavani has developed an enviable reputation as an elite-level pressing forward, never giving opposition defenders a moment’s peace and often profiting from the chaos his work ethic causes.

And with Rangnick renowned for his innovative Gegenpressing system, the possibility for the two experienced campaigners to develop a fruitful relationship is clear for all to see.

On top of that, Cavani also enjoyed an extremely productive season for the Red Devils last term, bagging 17 goals and providing six assists in 39 appearances in all competitions, highlighting his importance to the team.

Therefore, news that the £5.4m-rated star appears set to remain in the red half of Manchester until the summer will be warmly welcomed by everyone associated with United, and the manager, player and fans alike will be hoping for a productive end to the campaign.

Confira:

Projeção do clássico

Invencibilidade no Pacaembu

Melhora no segundo turno

Rangers: Arfield was disappointing

Rangers won their fourth Scottish Premiership match in succession under Gio van Bronckhorst as they beat Hearts 2-0 on Sunday.

The Gers picked up the three points as Alfredo Morelos and Joe Aribo put the game to bed in the first half with their well-taken goals.

Lightweight

One player who did let the Dutch head coach down, however, was central midfielder Scott Arfield as he struggled at times in the middle of the park.

Off the ball, he was a lightweight. As per SofaScore, he only won 33.3% of his duels as he lost six of his nine battles on the pitch. He won two of his six duels on the ground and one of his three in the air, whilst also committing two fouls, showing that he was too weak throughout the game.

To his credit, he did make three interceptions and two tackles as he put in an energetic shift in midfield for the Gers. However, his lack of strength up against Hearts players let him down at times and he should be looking to win a higher percentage of his duels.

On the ball, he was wasteful in front of goal. Via SofaScore, he missed two ‘big’ chances in the final third as he ended the match without a goal to his name. He fired the ball straight at Craig Gordon in a one-on-one position with plenty of time to pick his spot and then scuffed an effort wide of the far post after Morelos put the ball on a plate for him 12-yards out and unchallenged.

Arfield also completed 0% of his attempted dribbles and only created one chance for his teammates. Although, he did complete 89% of his passes and only lose possession of the ball six times.

Therefore, he let Gio down badly in the end as his end product was not good enough to make up for his lightweight nature in midfield. He put the effort in and made the right runs to get into positions to score, but he has to do better when he gets into those areas and he should have been coming away with at least one to his name.

Had Aribo and Morelos not already sealed the points with their goals, his misses could have been disastrous for the Gers.

India missing a bowling coach – MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni has said India are missing a bowling and fielding coach

Nagraj Gollapudi in Mumbai01-Jan-2010

MS Dhoni also touched on the need for India to improve their fielding•AFP

Indian captain MS Dhoni has admitted that the absence of a specialist bowling coach is hurting the team’s performance. Dhoni said it was “tough” for the bowlers and especially head coach Gary Kirsten to perform at optimum levels, and that ideally he would like the vacancy to be filled soon.”To some extent it does hurt not having a bowling coach. If you have a specialist coach he is always interacting with the bowlers and trying to get the best out of them,” Dhoni said on the eve of the Indian team’s departure to Bangladesh.Though India ended 2009 at the top of the ICC’s Test rankings, they have struggled to make a consistent progress in ODIs. After the early exit at the ICC World Twenty20, they were knocked out of the Champions Trophy in South Africa even before the tournament reached the second week. In a desperate move, the Indian board sacked Venkatesh Prasad and Robin Singh, the bowling and fielding coaches respectively. No explanation was given with the assumption being both coaches had been under the scanner after the World Twenty20 debacle.Dhoni said that decision had only increased the burden on Kirsten, who he felt was submerged under extra duties. “He [Kirsten] has to look after everything: he has to sit and talk to the batsmen, bowlers, fielders, build strategies and look after team building,” he said, adding that the BCCI could reduce the pressure simply by naming replacements who could closely work with the bowlers and fielders. The inconsistency in the fast bowling department has remained a concern for India right from the World Twenty20. In England, Zaheer Khan had aggravated the shoulder injury he picked during the IPL in South Africa. His inability to go full throttle exposed the younger lot like Ishant Sharma and Praveen Kumar, and though Ashish Nehra was around he was just finding his own feet, having made a return after a long time. Things did not improve during the Champions Trophy, and India’s problems were exacerbated during the home ODI series against Australia, which they lost 4-2. But things have started to improve after Zaheer’s return.Zaheer will lead the fast bowling department in Bangladesh which comprises Nehra, Sreesanth, and the rookie Sudeep Tyagi. During the recently concluded Sri Lanka series the Indian fast bowlers were lukewarm even if they improved on their death bowling. A good example could be the difference in their performances in Rajkot and Kolkata, for the second and fourth matches. In the first instance, after Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara’s blistering innings, India recovered admirably to clamp down the batsmen in the final ten overs. But in Kolkata, abetted by some shoddy fielding, the bowlers got distracted and allowed Upul Tharanga and Sangakkara to build a solid platform.Dhoni’s reaction to Mohammad Yousuf’s statement on Twenty20 hurting Pakistan

It is quite similar to the review system [UDRS]. If the decisions are in your favour you are OK with it but when they go against you don’t really feel it is working. It is the same case with Twenty20 format. I don’t think it would be great to blame the format. It is a mental approach that needs to change. The change of mindset is important. The basics remain the same.

Though Dhoni felt that a bowling coach would be able to discuss with the youngsters and build their confidence, he put faith in his squad. “It is a matter of time before they return to form. In Rajkot we bowled really well,” he said, “but we haven’t bowled consistently well in the death overs. It is a bit of a worry. But if we can do it in patches I don’t see why we can’t do it consistently.”A twin headache has been the fielding. Embarrassingly in the two Twenty20s and the first ODI of the Sri Lanka series, India dropped 12 catches. In the second ODI in Nagpur, when the match was still hanging in the balance, in the penultimate over Zaheer’s misfield cost them the match. By the time they reached Kolkata their ground fielding improved a lot but they still dropped Tharanga and Sangakkara when the batsmen were yet to get off the blocks. The pair built a valuable partnership of 171 runs. In the abandoned final game another simple catch went down.Dhoni was blunt in his appraisal once again. “We need to improve our fielding because in a close game avoiding the fielding errors can save us at least 15 runs,” he said. “We have a mix of safe fielders with some brilliant ones like Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.”He also praised Mike Young, the former Australian fielding coach, who spent time with the Indian team as a consultant during the limited-overs series. Though Young didn’t rush in with some innovative stuff, Dhoni said it had been “interesting” to spend time in his company. “He didn’t come with lots of ideas. He just wanted to see what was happening and where we are positioned. He worked really slow and came up with few basic techniques. It is important to take that forward.”Young will not travel with the squad to Bangladesh.
