Andrew Balbirnie’s all-round effort propelled Ireland to the top spot in the points table•International Cricket Council

Afghanistan might be stealing the spotlight in the ODI and first-class arena but their Under-19 team is still finding its trappings in international cricket. It was beaten soundly by Ireland Under-19s in King City, thanks to a splendid all-round performance by captain Andrew Balbirnie.Asked to bat, Ireland posted an imposing 289 for 7, with Balbirnie smashing eight fours and four sixes in his 106-ball 102. Balbirnie added 124 with fellow opener Lee Nelson (55) and a further 63 with Ben Ackland (50) to lay the stage for a substantial Ireland score. Afghanistan, however, fought back, taking four wickets for 16 to prevent Ireland from reaching 300, but their effort was to prove inadequate.Afghanistan, in their reply, struggled from the outset, losing their first three wickets for 34. It was their middle order which gave them hope: Noor-ul-Haq (49), Aimal Wafa (45), Asghar Hussain (51) and Zard Ali (31) kept Afghanistan in the hunt but three-wicket bursts from Balbirnie and Graham McDonald shut them out and propelled Ireland to the top of the table.Balbirnie was understandably ecstatic with his team’s performance. “We couldn’t ask for a better start,” he said. “We have had two pretty convincing wins so far and have done well in the batting, bowling and fielding departments. I really couldn’t have asked for a better start.”It was nice to contribute to a win and to score a few runs as well obviously makes me really happy. With a hard new ball and on a good batting wicket we do go and try and play our shots. It was also a quick outfield.”Balbirnie also lauded Afghanistan for their spirited effort. “(Having arrived late to the tournament) they must have been very jetlagged, but I thought that they played quite well,” he said. “Their bowling is good and their batting is very impressive as well. They really hung in there and did very well despite losing some wickets.”In another fixture, USA Under-19s were awarded two points after Sierra Leone Under-19s, held up by visa troubles, could not participate in their scheduled game and, as a result, had to forfeit.

Report makes big Martinez to Leeds claim

According to a report by Super Deporte, via Sport Witness, there has been a behind-the-scenes update on Leeds United’s search for a possible heir to Marcelo Bielsa.

The Lowdown: Bielsa era ending?

The Argentine, who has worked wonders at Elland Road overall, guiding them back to the Premier League after many years of waiting, could be on the way out of Yorkshire at the end of this season.

Sources suggest that the 66-year-old could decide to part company with his contract set to expire at the end of 2021/2022 as things stand.

There has been no sign of an extension at Leeds so far as the club hover just two points above the relegation zone after a very lacklustre start.

Former Granada boss Diego Martinez has been heavily tipped to potentially succeed Bielsa at the end of this season as an update emerges.

The Latest: ‘Everything suggests’ Martinez to Leeds…

As per Super Deporte (via Sport Witness), ‘everything suggests’ the 40-year-old will eventually succeed Leeds’ manager as the Spaniard is even in England studying the game.

Indeed, as per their information, Leeds chief Victor Orta has already held talks with Martinez – making a ‘first approach’ with him behind the scenes.

However, the out-of-work boss does not want to take charge of a team mid-season – with the feeling being he will arrive in the summer when Bielsa’s contract runs out.

The Verdict: Ideal replacement?

Lauded as a miracle worker and Spanish football revelation for his job at Granada, it’s safe to say Martinez certainly knows how to get the best out of what he has.

Guiding his former side from the second tier to Europa League quarter-finals, his candid interview with ESPN details a hard-working, charismatic boss potentially in the Bielsa mould.

He was adored by his former club’s supporters according to writers associated with Granada, with there being some suggestions they were calling for a statue (LaLigaLowdown).

Taking this into account, he could be a more-than ideal heir for Bielsa at Leeds.

Rangers linked with Joey Veerman move

Rangers could potentially look to sign Heerenveen midfielder Joey Veerman after Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s arrival, according to journalist Stuart Hodge.

The Lowdown: Van Bronckhorst takes charge

A new era at Ibrox is now in full swing, with Van Bronckhorst replacing Steven Gerrard as Gers manager following the latter’s switch to Aston Villa.

The Dutchman won his first Premiership match in charge on Sunday, with his side picking up a 3-1 victory away to Livingston.

It is a promising start to life as Rangers boss for Van Bronckhorst, who will be hoping to achieve similar success to his playing career at Ibrox, when he won two league titles.

[freshpress-poll id=“380435″]

The Latest: Veerman linked with Rangers move

He will be no doubt be eyeing up a few signings in order to further stamp his blueprint on the team and one player who could move to Rangers is Veerman, who has been linked with the Scottish champions in recent months.

That’s according to Hodge, who told GIVEMESPORT that he could see a transfer materialising. He said: “That one, yeah, potentially. But I think more so, that’s a market that van Bronckhorst will know well, that’s a market that’s affordable for Scottish clubs.”

The Verdict: Strong creative addition

Veerman is a midfielder with great potential, with Dutch coach Robert Molenaar once hailing him for having ‘extremely good’ technical ability.

Still only 23, he has already registered six assists in just 13 Eredivisie starts this season, highlighting the creativity he could bring to Van Bronckhorst’s team. Only James Tavernier (13) has accrued a higher assists tally for the Gers in 2021/22 across all competitions, with Ryan Kent (five) the next closest.

Veerman’s average of 2.4 key passes per game is also only bettered by Tavernier (3.9) at Rangers, so he is someone who could be an exciting and productive signing.

In other news, some Rangers fans have blasted one player after an incident against Livingston. Read more here.

Meet the new KP

Kieron Pollard played the innings of his short cricket life, as he stood his ground and hammered the New South Wales bowling into submission with his18-ball blitz that included five massive sixes and five thunderous fours

Nagraj Gollapudi in Hyderabad16-Oct-2009

Such was the ferocity of Kieron Pollard’s innings, that 50 off his 54 runs came in boundaries and sixes•Global Cricket Ventures-BCCI

The buzz in the press box was unambiguous – forget Kevin Pietersen, the real KP has arrived. Kieron Pollard played the innings of his short cricket life, as he stood his ground and hammered the New South Wales bowling into submission with his18-ball blitz that included five massive sixes and five thunderous fours. To repeat the obvious: 50 of those 54 runs came in boundaries and sixes! As soon as he hit the last of those sixes over the sightscreen to carry his team past New South Wales’ formidable target, the 6’4″ Pollard wielded his bat like a sword, then bent his back to let out a roar, his monstrous frame shaking as he released all that nervous energy. He repeated that act twice, then plucked out one of the stumps and ran to square leg where his team-mates joined him in a victory dance. Almost impossible to believe that 20 minutes before, the champagne corks were poised for popping in the New South Wales camp .The evening had already seen some incredible batting, as Phil Hughes and David Warner put on a 121-run opening stand to build an imposing platform for New South Wales. They then lost their way after Warner was out with five overs to go and fell about 20 runs short, but on a night like this, could any total have been beyond Pollard?Even if Pollard had a reputation for being a big hitter, today the challenge was huge. After the 12th over, Trinidad and Tobago were struggling at 79 for 4; a couple of overs later, they lost another wicket and the equation now was 70 from 36 balls with only Denesh Ramdin left of the experienced batsmen, along with Darren Bravo and Pollard to offer him support. To his credit, Ramdin took the onus on himself while Pollard was getting his eye in .With 55 needed in the last five overs, Simon Katich was nervously changing his fields. Ramdin was then run out and Pollard assumed the responsibility of providing the desired end – something he is getting used to as the leader of the lower order, but seldom has he lived up to the potential of a finisher.”We had a chance. Ramdin is an experienced campaigner and he has brought it home sometimes and sometimes he has not,” Pollard said after the victory. “In the first two overs after I came in to bat, he really took it to them and scored 20 runs but got run-out unfortunately.” That’s when Pollard chalked out his aim: “I’m the last (specialist) batsman so I need to win it for T&T and I must play my natural game and if it comes off it would be good for the team.”Pollard was aware of the equation and knew Brett Lee still had two overs. He told his partner Sherwin Ganga that if Lee bowled the 17th over the innings, the objective was to get at least eight runs off it. It was likely that Lee would bowl the final over, and the pair had decided to score the maximum in the last six deliveries. The advantage lay in the fact that two of the remaining four overs were to be bowled either by one of the two spinners, Nathan Hauritz and Steven Smith, or Moises Henriques. To everyone’s surprise Katich opted for Henriques to bowl the 17th.Nonchalantly, standing his ground, Pollard turned the match on its head. 27 runs came from that over, as Henriques started with a short ball and then lost himself trying to bowl yorkers. “He was trying his best and bowl to a plan, to bowl short. When he tried to bowl short I hit a boundary, and then he tried to bowl yorkers and I looked to hit straight. My plan was to whack it if he bowled short again.”Lee came the next over, but Pollard deflected him past third man for another four. Katich surprised again, sticking to Henriques for the next over, and Pollard continued to punish with supreme confidence for T&T to emerge victors.”We had a couple of practise sessions and we knew we had to play the straight-batted shots,” Pollard said. “We had discussed the cross-batted shots were not the way to go. So I watched the ball and tried to hit as straight as possible.”

Cook breaks South Africa's first-class batting record

A round-up of South Africa’s provincial games

Ashwell Prince would have thought he had done enough to emerge as the top batsman of the week when he scored 154 in the Warriors’ massive 532 in their match against the Lions in East London. Johan Botha chipped in as well, with a solid 97, his third significant score of the season, but both South African internationals were outdone by Stephen Cook.Cook broke the South African first-class batting record by scoring a superb 390, occupying the crease for almost 14 hours before being trapped leg before by Botha. Lonwabo Tsotosbe showed encouraging form with 3 for 95, accounting for Neil McKenzie, Alviro Petersen and Jonathan Vandiar. Thami Tsolekile announced his return to first-class cricket with a confident 141. Even as the runs piled up, the match petered out to a draw.Matters were more measured in Centurion though, even as the match between Titans and Dolphins ended in a stalemate. The bowlers came to the fore with Johann Louw taking 6 for 50, as the Titans were bowled out for 315 in their first innings. New South African cap Heino Kuhn scored a half-century while Albie Morkel managed a hundred. The Dolphins were reeling at 30 for 3 during the reply when Loots Bosman retired, but he returned to score 45. Dale Steyn took 4 for 30 as the Dolphins ended 27 runs short.Louw ended with a match haul of 10 wickets as Faf du Plessis scored 73 in the Titans’ second innings. They set the Dolphins a target of 291 and even though Bosman scored 53, the Dolphins ran out of time and finished on 209 for 4.CSA Provincial Three-Day ChallengeRoelof van der Merwe was the star performer for Northerns against Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN) in Kingsmead. He top scored with 56 and took just one wicket but his team steamrolled the opposition by an innings and 54 runs. KZN were bowled out for 144 and Northerns’ reply of 271 was enough for a massive victory. Mandla Mashimbyi took 4 for 34 and Sean Nowak picked up three wickets as KZN were bowled out for 73 in the second essay.Doug Watson was in top form for KwaZulu-Natal Inland against Griqualand West in Pietermaritzburg. The veteran batsman scored an unbeaten 103 as Inland declared on 300 for 4. Reeza Hendricks scored a hundred for Griqualand who declared on 223 for 7. Mario Olivier’s century helped Inland finish on 212 for 2 and secure the draw. That was just one of four drawn clashes in the week, with the matches between Eastern Province (EP) and North West, Free State and Boland, and Namibia and Easterns failing to yield results.EP, carrying a slender 24-run lead, set North West a target of 242 in Port Elizabeth. However, North West ended on 108 for 4 with spinner Werner Coetsee ending with nine wickets in the match.Shadley van Schalkwyk scored 86 as Free State took a 18-run lead against Boland in Bloemfontein. Free State had a solid second innings as well, with Divan van Wyk reaching a half-century. Boland could only manage 177 for 2 chasing 290.In Windhoek, Gerhardus Viljoen’s 5 for 54 bowled out Namibia for 219. Easterns may have fancied their chances after Kobus Pienaar scored 154 and they declared on 430 for 8. But Namibia responded with class, as Raymond van Schoor smashed 141 to take the hosts to 418 for 5.Shane Burger was the hero during Gauteng’s innings-and-18-run demolition of Border in Johannesburg. He scored an unbeaten 101 to take Gauteng to 352 for 7 in the first innings. He then claimed 5 for 13 as Border were bowled out for 124. Asked to follow on, Border collapsed for 210 with Burger taking 4 for 34. The victory took Gauteng to the top of the table.CSA Provincial One-Day ChallengeIn the provincial one-day challenge, rain played spoilsport with two results being decided via the D/L method and no-results in the other two. One of those was between KZN and Northern in Durban. Natal managed just 127 after being put in, and Northerns reached 11 without loss when play was stopped. A similar result followed in the match between KZN-Inland and Griqualand West in Pietermaritzburg. Inland scored 165 for 9 first up, with Charl Pietersen picking up 4 for 24. Griqualand weren’t even able to start their innings as the heavens opened up.Half centuries from Jimmy Kgamadi and Cliffie Deacon lifted North West to 206 for 8 in their match against EP in Port Elizabeth. Vusimusi Mazibuko bagged 6 for 25 as EP limped to 129 for 9 in 26 overs, when rain stopped play and handed North West a revised target of 67. There was a thriller in Bloemfontein where Dean Elgar’s half century took Free State to 208. Omphile Ramela, Uwe Birkenstock and Lenert van Wyk all scored half-centuries as Boland’s chase looked to be on track but their tail fell apart and they ended on 202 for 8, losing by just six runs.Craig Williams scored 114 as Namibia managed an impressive 242 for 6 against Easterns in Windhoek. The men from Benoni crashed to 166 all out, giving Nambia victory by 76 runs. Gauteng scored 323, the highest total of the round, in Johannesburg as Richard Cameron blasted 114 and Vaughn van Jaarsveld notched up 95. Border were in danger of being bowled out for under 150 at 130 for 7 when the match was called off. Gauteng earned a 100-run victory via the D/L method.Batsman of the week:Stephen Cook’s claim to the South African record earns him the title this week. His 390 broke Daryl Cullinan’s unbeaten 337 for Transvaal against Northern Transvaal in the 1993-94 season. It also eclipsed the highest score by a South African in first-class cricket, which was Barry Richards’ 356 for South Australia against Western Australia in 1970-71. Cook is also the leading run-scorer in the competition so far.Bowler of the week:Even though the Dolphins didn’t win, Johann Louw’s 10-wicket haul was enough to make him the bowler of the week. While he dismantled the Titans’ top order and the tail in the first innings, he proved too fearsome for the middle order the second time around. He is now on the top of the bowling charts with 18 wickets, six ahead of his nearest rival.Special mention:Shane Burger gets a special mention for orchestrating Gauteng’s win over Border with a brilliant all-round performance. He claimed nine wickets and scored a century in a superb display to hand Gauteng the massive victory. Burger is now 14th on the batting rankings and second on the bowling rankings in the CSA Provincial Three-Day Challenge.

Newcastle transfer news on Diaz

Newcastle United may now have received a big boost in their pursuit of Luis Diaz in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: In the race

A Bola (via Sport Witness) reported last month that the St. James’ Park faithful were one of a number of clubs in the race to sign Diaz in January, along with the likes of Liverpool, Everton and Chelsea, Real Madrid and AC Milan.

He is a player that is having somewhat of a breakout season at FC Porto, with no fewer than 12 goals scored and three assists made in 21 games in total over all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Teammate Sergio Oliveira even went as far as to claim that he is ‘extraordinary’ after a match-winning display against AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League, and there is no doubt that he has a big future ahead of him.

The Latest: Financial trouble

As per Record (via Sport Witness), the North East club may now have received ‘good news’ in their hopes of signing Diaz, as Porto failed to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages.

It has made a big impact on their financial situation, and the ‘fastest solution’ is to sell some of their big stars next month, including Diaz.

Porto will now listen to any offers that come in for the Colombia international in January, and their ‘dream scenario’ would be to sell in the winter, but for him not to actually leave until the summer.

The Verdict: Unrealistic

Given the calibre of clubs that seem to be in for Diaz, it may prove too difficult for the Tyneside outfit to persuade him to join them at this moment in time.

Of course, they currently find themselves in a relegation battle, and a player of Diaz’s quality, who has just played in the Champions League, will surely want to move to other teams still in the competition ahead of them.

Still, with the financial backing that they have from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium, it will not hurt the Magpies to at least try to sign the 24-year-old, but it may well be an uphill battle.
