Liverpool linked with Antony transfer

So far this season, Liverpool wingers Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota have scored 19 of the Reds’ 27 goals in the Premier League, with the Egyptian netting 10 of them.

However, it seems as though FSG have their eye on securing a new attacking talent who could strengthen the attacking power at Anfield even further.

What’s the news?

It has recently been reported by El Nacional that Liverpool are interested in signing Ajax winger Antony during the next summer transfer window.

The 21-year-old winger joined Ajax last year after the Dutch club secured a five-year deal in February 2020 with Brazilian club Sao Paulo worth a reported initial fee of £13.3m.

Since then, Antony – who has been described as a “wonderful” player by Dutch scout Piet de Visser – has made 56 appearances for Ajax across all competitions, scoring 14 goals and providing 12 assists, which is presumably what has apparently attracted Liverpool to him.

So far this season, the £22.5m winger (according to Transfermarkt) has scored four goals and provided two assists in 10 appearances across all competitions.

In addition to this, he has racked up an average of 2.6 shots per game in the Eredivisie, and while it may not be at the same level as Salah’s average of 4.4 shots per game in the Premier League this season, it shows that Antony has plenty of attacking talent in him at a young age.

However, according to SofaScore, the 21-year-old has the same technical rating (62) as Liverpool’s Egyptian star, which suggests that the Ajax man could be the Merseyside club’s next version of Salah in the future if he moves to Anfield and improves other aspects of his game, something that Klopp would undoubtedly love to see.

If a move for Antony in the next summer transfer window is financially viable for FSG, they should definitely look to add him to Klopp’s squad as a potential future star given his young age and evident talents.

Joyce ton helps Sussex to Lord's

In a match of two fine centuries, Ed Joyce’s career-best 146 outshone Alex Gidman’s fine response to guide Sussex into the Friends Provident final with a 34-run victory against Gloucestershire at Hove

In a match with two excellent centuries, Ed Joyce’s career-best 146 outshone Alex Gidman’s fine response to guide Sussex into the Friends Provident final with a 34-run victory against Gloucestershire at Hove. On a sun-soaked day with a parched outfield runs flowed freely and the visitors were on course in their pursuit of the target of 325, but they couldn’t maintain the momentum until the end. After his outstanding innings, Joyce produced a vital piece of fielding to run out Hamish Marshall after he and Gidman had added 155 for the second wicket to make the chase look achievable. When Gidman reached a 104-ball hundred there was still a decent chance for Gloucestershire, but those hopes faded when Yasir Arafat showed his brilliance with reverse swing and the Sussex spinners picked up vital wickets.Kadeer Ali fell early in the chase, but Marshall and Gidman made the most of the fielding restrictions in conditions tough for bowlers to maintain pressure. Balls scudded across the quick outfield but Sussex have a trusted one-day method this season and backed their spinners to play a key role.Once Marshall was run out, Rory Hamilton-Brown made an important breakthrough when he removed Craig Spearman for 2 and Will Beer, the young legspinner, deserved credit for conceding less than five an over.Chris Taylor – playing despite a split webbing on his hand – ticked along nicely with Gidman before he was cleaned up by Arafat. Then it was over to the spinners. Michael Yardy had Gidman caught behind and Steven Adshead missed a heave to be well stumped by his opposite number.Arafat was spearing in his pinpoint yorkers and when James Franklin briefly threatened to jangle Sussex nerves, Yardy closed out the match and finished with four wickets. There has been a changing of the guard at Hove, but Yardy has retained the same team spirit and competitive attitude instilled by Chris Adams.Yardy was pleased when asked to bat on a used pitch and Sussex set off at a decent rate with Joyce and Chris Nash laying the platform. Joyce, who has enjoyed a new lease of life since moving from Middlesex, played the anchor role, allowing the others to free their arms. Nash fell to Steve Kirby for a 30-ball 32 the Luke Wright cut loose to carve 36 off 26 balls.Goodwin, the engine of Sussex’s one-day batting, then joined Joyce in the key third-wicket stand and the pair began to run Gloucestershire ragged in perfect batting conditions. Joyce picked up sixes over the leg side although the second nearly brought his downfall when Vikram Banerjee clung onto the catch at deep square-leg only for his foot to touch the rope.Joyce brought up his century with a thick edge down to third man and with two batsmen set Sussex took the batting Powerplay. Runs came at more than nine an over and Goodwin had enough time to also reach three figures before he lost his leg stump against Jon Lewis when he attempted a lap sweep.Joyce stayed to see the total past 300 before being run out and he certainly picked a good time to set a new career benchmark. Sussex have become used to claiming silverware and are one match away from showing the new-look team can add to the trophy cabinet.

Luke Edwards drops fresh Eddie Howe claim

Eddie Howe does not look likely to take charge of Newcastle United this weekend.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Luke Edwards, with The Telegraph journalist revealing in a post on Twitter that, regardless of whether the 43-year-old is appointed as Steve Bruce’s successor at St. James’ Park prior to Saturday’s trip to Brighton & Hove Albion, the former AFC Bournemouth manager will not be the man in the Magpies’ dugout at the American Express Community Stadium this weekend.

In response to a fan asking whether Edwards expected Howe to be appointed before the Brighton fixture, the journalist said: “I doubt very much he will be in charge of the team against Brighton whether his appointment comes before it or not.”

Fans will be gutted

Considering just how poor Newcastle United looked against Chelsea last time out, the news that Graeme Jones appears to be set to once again take charge of the Magpies on Saturday is sure to have left fans of the club gutted.

Indeed, while few would have expected a win against Thomas Tuchel’s table-topping Blues side last weekend, the manner in which Newcastle succumbed to the visitors rightly left a number of the club’s fanbase furious – with one stating their belief that “Jones is no better than Bruce,” while another dubbed the performance as “disgusting.”

It is not difficult to see why fans felt this way, as the home side enjoyed just 21% possession of the ball against Chelsea, as well as mustering one shot on target, creating no big chances and completing a total of 123 passes over the course of the 90 minutes – only eight more than Antonio Rudiger managed by himself.

And, with Brighton looking a much-improved outfit under Graham Potter this season, picking up 16 points over their opening ten fixtures of the campaign, it would appear wise for Newcastle fans not to hold their breath for a better performance, or indeed result, come Saturday afternoon. After all, they are yet to win under their interim boss.

He will take charge on August 1.

Predicted Rangers XI vs Ross County

Rangers host Ross County at Ibrox today in the Scottish Premiership as they look to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to eight matches.

The Gers won their last league match 6-1 as they thrashed Motherwell at Fir Park last weekend, with Fashion Sakala netting a hat-trick being the highlight of the scoring.

Steven Gerrard’s side managed a 1-1 draw in their Europa League clash with Brondby on Thursday, however, as Ianis Hagi’s second-half goal secured a point after he came off the bench in the second half.

How many changes will Gerrard make to the team? Here is our predicted XI…

We are predicting that the head coach will make four alterations to the side, with Jon McLaughlin, Ryan Kent, Kemar Roofe and Ianis Hagi all coming in.

Starting between the sticks, this is a simple case of rotation. McLaughlin and Allan McGregor have shared the goalkeeping duties this season and it could be time for the former to start after two starts in a row for the latter in all competitions.

The next three changes all come in the front three. Firstly, Kent could start ahead of Sakala on the left after his impressive cameo against Brondby. We published an article explaining why the ex-Liverpool man should be unleashed against Ross County and it could give Sakala a chance to rest heading into the international break as he potentially jets away with Zambia.

On the right of the attacking trident, Hagi could be handed a place in the team. He came off the bench to score with a sublime right-footed finish against Brondby and that strike could be enough to convince Gerrard to start him. Joe Aribo started in that position against the Danes, but he could drop back into the midfield three with Steven Davis facing the chop, after a disappointing performance from the Northern Ireland international.

Finally, Kemar Roofe could start in place of Alfredo Morelos at the tip of the attack. He has five goals in six Premiership starts this season and could slot into the team to give his Colombian teammate a rest. The former Leeds man, who scored 14 goals in 18 league starts last term, is a proven scorer at this level and could link-up with Hagi and Kent in the final third.

AND in other news, Gerrard can get Ibrox bouncing on Sunday by unleashing “phenomenal” Rangers dynamo…
