Van de Beek must start against Newcastle

Manchester United will be hoping to pick up where they left off before the international break when Newcastle visit Old Trafford this afternoon.

The Red Devils picked up a healthy seven points from a possible nine in the opening weeks of the new Premier League campaign, and the addition of five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo will provide a significant boost to their ambitions this season.

However, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have a difficult decision to make regarding who starts in midfield, with Scott McTominay unavailable for the 20-time English champions today due to injury.

There was also a doubt over Fred due to a dispute involving the Brazilian FA and coronavirus restrictions, but he has now been cleared to play.

The duo normally form either a double pivot alongside each other in United’s engine room, or if Solskjaer is feeling more adventurous, he drops one for a more attacking option.

On this occasion, the Norwegian will be forced to field a different setup in the centre of the park, handing an opportunity to one of the club’s fringe plays.

Against Southampton, 33-year-old Nemanja Matic got the nod to play alongside Fred, but his underwhelming display saw him return to the bench last time out.

The experienced campaigner would perhaps be the safe option for Solskjaer, yet a fixture at Old Trafford against a struggling Newcastle side on Ronaldo’s homecoming is no time to play things safe.

Therefore, he must bring Donny van de Beek into the starting lineup, giving the Netherlands international a perfect opportunity to showcase his true potential and stake a claim for a regular spot in the first XI.

Van de Beek arrived on English shores with a sizeable reputation after scoring 41 goals and providing 34 assists in 175 games for Ajax, as well as winning a domestic double in 2018/19 as they reached the Champions League semi-finals.

Nevertheless, the 24-year-old struggled in his maiden Premier League campaign, making just four top-flight starts last term as he attempted to get to grips with his new surroundings.

He did catch the eye from time to time, though. One such occasion was against Istanbul Basaksehir while on European duty, and his impressive showing drew praise from former United midfielder Owen Hargreaves.

“I thought Van de Beek was close to perfect. He is so unselfish, he can just fit in and play the right balls everywhere,” said the BT Sport pundit.

Van de Beek’s previous exploits for Ajax illustrate that he can be a real game-changer when on top form, and today’s fixture could be the ideal opportunity for him to show that in a United shirt, so Solskjaer must give the 24-year-old the opportunity to rediscover his golden touch.

Ring of steel weighs heavy on the teams

So much has been said and written about the security arrangements for this. Less has been said about the effect it’s having on the home players.

While being body-searched with a thoroughness that bordered on thediscomfiting, one could see beyond the door and into the lobby of the TajCoromandel. The Indian team had returned an hour earlier after a practicesession under leaden skies at Chepauk, and one of the players was standingthere talking to a police officer. By the time this writer was finally allowed in -even the stick of sunscreen scrutinised as a potentially lethal object – the chat had become an argument. The player was gesticulating angrily before turning on his heel and walking away. “You could at least have asked me,” he said as a parting shot to the officer. So much has been said and written about the security arrangements for thisgame and how England were convinced to return and continue the tour. Lesshas been said about the effect it’s having on the home players. Many ofthem have spent vast tracts of time in Chennai, either for league cricketor as trainees at the MRF Pace Foundation. In less troubled times, it wascommon for friends to drop by or for the players themselves to go out oncetraining was done for the day. Now, with the security blanket weighingdown heavily, the often wrongly diagnosed Cabin Fever may manifest itself. In days gone by, it was common to see people loiter around the teamhotel in search of an autograph or a handshake from the stars. If you havesuch intentions this time, don’t even bother. It takes a couple of minutesjust to have the car inspected, and getting past the metal-detector andthe frisking expert is another ordeal. Even inside, there’s no room tobreathe. As soon as I paused, a steward was next to me, asking politelywhere I needed to go. “It’s been like this since the teams arrived,” saidthe book-store owner. The security is everywhere. The city’s police chief says the teams will be protected by 5000 security personnel – including a thousand policemen ringing the Coromandel – in a complex, multi-layered operation from the hotel to the stadium. There are commandos -300 have been deployed – all over, starting at the gate. Hands on the butt of their automatic weapons and eyes watching the road and neighbouring buildings, they stand there as poker-faced as theGrenadier Guards at Buckingham Palace, even as a light drizzle falls. The scene at the ground was even more unreal. Pre-match days at the MAChidambaram Stadium always attracted a decent crowd eager to catch aglimpse of their heroes. Not this time. When the Indians turned up shortlyafter noon to have a nets session, the silence was punctuated only by thesound of bat on ball and the odd raised voice. No yells or shrieks ofencouragement from the stands, and certainly no extempore analysis fromthe hacks, who had all been banished to a faraway stand. Those nearest to the players, the nets bowlers and ball boys apart, wereseveral dozen Rapid Action Force commandos standing just beyond theboundary. In their dull-blue camouflage fatigues, the circle of soldiersmade for a surreal sight. All of them were facing away from the action, their eyes trained instead on concrete stands and huge piles of plasticchairs that had yet to be arranged properly.India had a decent workout in intensely humid conditions and, when Englandarrived soon after two, there was an impromptu press conference in thedining hall of the TNCA clubhouse. Alastair Cook spoke of “getting back towhat we know” but everyone present at this famous old venue felt those simpler times may never return. Cricket writers are often guilty of using words like arsenal, fusillade and artillery, butthe sooner we can watch a game without a hundred assault riflesscrutinising us, the better it will be for everyone.

West Ham keep tabs on teenage prodigy

West Ham will continue to monitor Kerr Smith after nearly signing him on transfer deadline day last month…

What’s the word?

That’s according to the ever-reliable ExWHUemployee, who delivered a fresh update on the situation on the recent episode of ‘The West Ham Way’ podcast.

He said: “A guy called Kerr Smith who we were close to signing on deadline day, he is one as well who we are keeping an eye on.”

The Irons were linked with the Dundee United gem during the summer, with The Sun’s Alan Nixon claiming that there was also interest from Premier League rivals Southampton and Crystal Palace.

It was even thought that manager David Moyes wanted the 16-year-old to come to London for talks over a potential move, which speaks volumes considering his age.

Moyes masterclass

The Hammers, and Moyes in particular, made some very smart signings throughout the summer, ranging from the arrival of Champions League winner Kurt Zouma to the addition of potential future star Thierry Nevers.

Smith would undoubtedly be a signing for the long-term but the fact that the 58-year-old would have liked to speak to him personally suggests that there is a first-team element in mind – and understandably so.

The young centre-back has already made his senior bow for the Terrors and has racked up a total of seven appearances since the start of last season.

It’s thought that Smith has a £500k release clause in his contract, which for a Premier League side like West Ham is peanuts. He has even trained with Aston Villa, Manchester United and Everton, as per the Courier, so he’s clearly caught the eye in recent years.

The vastly experienced Mark Connolly, his teammate at Tannadice Park, spoke glowingly about the teenager back in April this year.

“Kerr, who played beside me, was fantastic. He’s 16 years of age and it’s incredible,” he told reporters after a defeat to Kilmarnock. “It’s the way the football club wants to go, bringing young players through, and this boy’s ready.”

The 6-foot emerging talent would fit into the mould of what Moyes has been doing in recent times, having overseen the progression of academy talents like Ben Johnson.

If the Scotsman can secure one of the biggest talents from his home country, then he deserves to be lauded for pulling off another masterstroke in the transfer window, especially after being given the full authority over such decisions.

Siddons bemoans overawed batsmen

Jamie Siddons, the Bangladesh coach, said his batsmen were a bit overawed by the prospect of facing Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis in tandem

Jamie Siddons, the Bangladesh coach, admitted he did not expect a 465-run mauling at the hands of Sri Lanka following the application they had shown in the fourth innings in Mirpur, but said they were a bit overawed by the prospect of facing Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis in tandem.”After the 400 [in the fourth innings] in Dhaka where everyone including me saw huge improvement in the young guys this was not what was expected,” Siddons said. “But I still see that six or seven of our first eight batsmen haven’t played ten Test matches yet and against two of the world’s best bowlers, probably the best bowlers in the world at the moment, it is a tough ask.”They were also a bit overawed I think. Mendis took three wickets in no time and we were again four for nothing,” he said. “I am disappointed that our top four can’t consistently make runs and it is always Ash [Mohammad Ashraful], Shakib [Al Hasan] and Mushie [Mushfiqur Rahim], the same three, trying to save our skin. I’m disappointed that we didn’t show that we are improving although without doubt we are.”Siddons said the pitch was not to blame, but felt the lack of experienced showed. “The wicket was okay. Some of the players I think were a little inexperienced to handle the pressure that Mendis, Murali and [Chaminda] Vaas put on them. I mean those names bowling at you is pretty tough for a team of players who haven’t played ten Test matches.”I guess our more senior players like Ash, who looked at ease making 45 in the first innings, Shakib, who has played a lot of one-dayers, and Mushfiqur, who has played a fair bit of cricket, showed that experience can help when you have the talent.”They are getting there and I would love to do this all over again in two years’ time with the same guys and I can assure you that we’ll be a much better team.”Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lanka captain, was “very happy” with the series win. “We knew it was going to be tough considering the conditions we were given,” he said. “We knew we had to adjust. We were in trouble at times but the guys showed a lot of fight and character.”[Tillakaratne] Dilshan in the first innings showed that when we were 75 for 4 and that is something we encourage the boys to do, to be the best they can. I am very proud of the players. We are a good unit and we have very good standards. We just need to continue working hard and improving. At the moment we are fourth in the rankings and we should try and push ourselves further up.”
