Southampton: Alex McCarthy signs new deal

Alex McCarthy became the latest Southampton player to commit his future to the club earlier this week, although fans may not be too happy with the decision.

What’s the word?

Southampton confirmed on Wednesday that the 31-year-old had been rewarded with a new three-year contract at St Mary’s, with Ralph Hasenhuttl set to stick with the former QPR man as his first choice ahead of Fraser Forster this season.

Both McCarthy and Forster’s contracts were set to expire at the end of the current campaign and the former’s new contract paves the way for the latter to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Hasenhuttl suggested earlier this month that:

“We will definitely extend the contract of one of the two keepers, then the other one will leave. I think that, in the future, we will look to sign a new goalkeeper.”

Therefore, it looks as if Saints fans will have to wait until next summer to see a new ‘keeper arrive, with any new signing likely to replace Forster and compete with McCarthy for the starting spot in between the sticks.

However, Southampton fans may not be too happy that McCarthy was the one handed a new deal reportedly worth £50k per week, as his performances in the second half of last season were far from good enough and his two displays so far this season won’t fill fans with much confidence.

The shot-stopper, who has previously been dubbed “fantastic” by the manager, was slow off his line for two of Everton’s goals in the opening fixture whilst he was beaten by a tame effort from Mason Greenwood in last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

Last season saw Southampton concede 68 top-flight goals despite having an xGA of just 58.55, which suggests that the goalkeepers must take a fair portion of the blame for their woeful defensive record.

[freshpress-quiz id=“594431”]

It also perhaps won’t fill McCarthy with confidence that Hasenhuttl is already planning on bringing a new ‘keeper in as the long-term solution in goal, so hopefully, his form doesn’t continue to suffer.

Liverpool tracking Jarrod Bowen

An update has emerged on Liverpool’s interest in Jarrod Bowen, amid speculation over Divock Origi’s future.

What’s the talk?

According to The Athletic, a number of European teams are interested in signing Origi from Liverpool before the end of the window, although no official offers have been placed.

The report adds that Liverpool are continuing to monitor West Ham attacker Bowen, although it remains to be seen how viable a deal for the Englishman is.

Fans would love it

Michael Edwards and Jurgen Klopp must work together to wave bye-bye to Origi and replace him with Bowen either before the end of this window or in the January market. With less than a week to go before the deadline, it may be too tight for the Reds to get both deals over the line this summer, but they could get the wheels in motion ahead of the next one.

With a clutch of clubs showing interest in Origi, the Reds should cash in on the Belgian and use those funds to bring Bowen in. The Reds dud failed to score a Premier League goal in nine appearances last term, having managed four goals in 25 games the previous year, whilst only providing one assist. This suggests that he does not have the quality to be a consistent threat for the club in the top-flight.

Bowen, meanwhile, was impressive in the Premier League for the Hammers last season. He produced eight goals and five assists in 30 starts, averaging a WhoScored rating of 6.75 for David Moyes’ side. The winger showed that he is capable of scoring and creating goals from out wide, whilst he is also able to operate in a number of positions across the front – offering Klopp tactical flexibility.

Hull boss Grant McCann once hailed him as a ‘special talent’ and lauded his professionalism on and off the pitch. He said:

“He is unreal. Just watching him doing his tests the other day and the way he trains and presents himself every day shows you that. He has always got a smile on his face and there are no airs or graces about him. He got 22 goals in the Championship last year and that is no mean feat.

“He is a special boy and special talent. Hopefully, I can add my stamp onto him and imprint that will take him further. That is what I am about.”

Liverpool fans would love this move as it could improve the quality of their attacking options. Bowen has proven that he can score and assist goals at a greater rate than Origi, whilst he also has the potential to improve further at the age of 24.

Whether they are able to do that in the remaining days of the window is up in question, though, so this may be one that is shelved for a future one, but fans could be delighted if the club are able to ship out an underperforming player.

Stuttering back into life

Not everything went smoothly as Toronto hosted big-time cricket for the first time in nine years

In the late 1990s it looked as if Canada was set to become North America’s home for visiting international sides. A large, primarily Asian, expat audience turned up in big numbers to a succession of tournaments, usually held in September. The presence of India and Pakistan was crucial to the viability of the ventures, but as the political tension between the two escalated, the cricket sides became caught up and eventually India were forced by their government to pull out rather than face Pakistan. Without the prime draw, interest waned and the Toronto project was doomed. Soon after, the whole match-fixing saga broke and offshore venues for matches lost their appeal as the authorities looked to clamp down on bookmakers’ opportunities. But nine years later on, and Toronto is again hosting major cricket. Some would argue it’s too late in the year – early-morning temperatures struggle to hit 50 degrees – but with the international calendar jam-packed, you take what window you can get.The event has been made possible by substantial sponsorship by a Dubai-based company. However, the build-up has been anything but ideal. West Indies were on the original cast list, along with Canada, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, but they pulled out as their board signed a deal to make all their players available to Allen Stanford. They were replaced by Zimbabwe, hardly an A – or even B-list – attraction.Promotion has been scratchy, not helped by rumbling uncertainty over the visa positions for two of the visitors. As late as Monday, both Pakistan and Zimbabwe were reported to be having difficulties. In the event, both made it, albeit with little time to spare.Temporary stands, accommodating up to 10,000, have been built in recent weeks, and the organisers have been bullish in their predictions of the turnout. In the event, there were never more than 1300 inside the ground today, with the bigger audience for the Pakistan match. The earlier game was not so attractive, either in terms of teams or time. The 9.30am start on a chilly autumn morning doesn’t appeal to many. The ground looks pretty good, the replay screens are big and the sightscreens impress. But the behind-the-scenes operation was hardly slick, with power outages and limited internet access for the media. What an event like this needs is publicity, and the PR machine has been, at best, spluttering into life. With a slicker operation, many more tickets might well have been shifted. Oh, and given that a picture is worth a thousand words, someone might have thought to ensure that there were photographers on the ground who would feed the world’s media. The hope is that the weekend will bring much bigger crowds, and talk is that when Sri Lanka play Pakistan tomorrow at 1.30pm in what should be a dress rehearsal for the final, there will be several thousand inside the hastily-constructed ground.Despite the glitches and grumbles, just getting top cricket to Canada is an achievement, and the organisers deserve credit for that. What they now need is three days of good weather, more spectators and some great cricket.

Stats to match the style

What the numbers say about VVS Laxman, who became the eighth Indian player to appear in 100 Tests

S Rajesh06-Nov-2008

Despite being in a batting line-up which includes several heavyweights, VVS Laxman has made his presence felt in no uncertain terms throughout his 12-year Test career. In Nagpur, he completes a century of Tests, a feat achieved by only seven other Indian players.Parallels are often drawn between him and a follow Hyderabadi whose strokeplay was similarly silken and magical, but one who missed the century landmark by a solitary Test. Not only is Laxman’s batting evocative of Mohammad Azharuddin’s, their stats are remarkably similar too: Laxman’s amazing performance in Delhi against Australia, where he scored 259 runs without being dismissed, ensured his average crept past Azharuddin’s, but the sitter he missed from Michael Clarke means the catches tally for both is exactly the same – 105.

Comparing Laxman and Azharuddin

PlayerTestsRunsAverageCatchesVVS Laxman99631345.41105Mohammad Azharuddin99621545.03105Unlike Azharuddin, who blazed his way into Test cricket with three hundreds in successive Tests, Laxman’s entry was far more subdued: his first century came in his 17th Test, and his average didn’t touch 40 till his 34th.In fact, Laxman’s career can be split into four parts: the first one – lasting 20 matches – was one where he struggled to make a mark, scoring just one century, against Australia in Sydney in 1999-2000. The next phase started with that unforgettable Kolkata Test against Australia in 2001 – Laxman’s epic 281 began a glorious run which continued through most of the next three years. He scored six centuries and 13 fifties in 30 Tests during that period. When India toured Australia in 2003-04, Laxman notched up two hundreds, the second of which was the ideal way to celebrate his 50th Test – a sparkling 178 in Sydney, which also pushed his average up to an all-time high of 47.39.The next three years were largely disappointing, in which he even failed to get runs against his favourite Australian team when they toured in 2004-05. His only hundreds in those 30 Tests came against Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and West Indies. That barren spell was broken when Pakistan toured in 2007-08, and since then Laxman has been fairly consistent – he was the only middle-order batsman in the Indian line-up to score two half-centuries on the tour of Sri Lanka, where they struggled to find answers to Ajantha Mendis.

Exclude his stats as an opener, and Laxman’s average shoots up to almost 49, with 44 fifty-plus scores in 86 matches.

The Australians invariably brought out the best in him – in seven series, the only time he failed utterly was at home in 2004-05, when he averaged 17.57 in four Tests. Overall, in 23 Tests against them, Laxman averages a splendid 56.21, the highest among all batsmen who’ve scored at least 1500 Test runs against Australia since 1970. His heroics in Delhi means his average against them has nudged ahead of Tendulkar’s. Of the three times Laxman has won the Man-of-the-Match award, two have come against Australia.

Among the three, Dravid was the one with whom he forged the biggest partnerships: in 66 innings, the two put together 11 century stands, with two match-winning triple-century efforts in Kolkata and Adelaide against the Australians. They also added 175 in Sydney earlier this year – their average against Australia in 22 innings is 66.38. They are one of only nine pairs to score more than 1000 runs against Australia, and in terms of averages only Jack Hobbs and Herbert Sutcliffe, the legendary openers from England, have done better among those nine pairs.

If Dravid comes out of his current rut, the two might yet have the opportunity to get another big stand going, and break that record. Leeds wanted Rangers ace Kent

Alan Hutton has now revealed that Marcelo Bielsa wanted to sign Ryan Kent from Glasgow Rangers in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: James signed

Leeds United announced the signing of Dan James from Manchester United on Transfer Deadline Day, as it became clear that they were looking to sign a winger before the window shut.

The Yorkshire club have previously been linked with a move for Kent, and it is not clear whether they will revisit their interest in January after signing James.

The Latest: Hutton on Kent

Speaking to Football Insider, former Light Blues ace turned pundit Hutton has revealed that Bielsa was after Kent, and is relieved that he has ended up staying at Ibrox:

“Bielsa liked the likes of Ryan Kent and he was after him.

“They’ve (Kent and James) got similar traits. For him to come in with that pace and work ethic. He can score goals, he can assist.

“I was desperate for Kent to stay. I know he’s been a little bit up and down but he’s a fantastic player.

“He’s a key figure in that Rangers team. Over the moon that he’s stayed.”

The Verdict: Relief

It is certainly a welcome relief that Steven Gerrard’s team have managed to keep Kent on their books, despite interest from the Whites.

The Englishman scored no fewer than 13 goals and made a further 15 assists in 52 matches in total over all competitions across the 2020/21 term (Transfermarkt), which are very impressive numbers for a wide player.

Nonetheless, at 24 years of age, his market value will surely only get bigger, and so the Gers can wait for him to reach his full potential before potentially selling him to a Premier League side for a huge profit.
