Cox stunned by Somerset semi-final victory

LONDON, Aug 1 AFP – Somerset’s Australian captain Jamie Cox admitted he thought his cricket team’s defence of the one-day Trophy tournament was about to end today during the course of a thrilling semi-final against Kent at Taunton.

AFP01-Aug-2002LONDON, Aug 1 AFP – Somerset’s Australian captain Jamie Cox admitted he thought his cricket team’s defence of the one-day Trophy tournament was about to end today during the course of a thrilling semi-final against Kent at Taunton.Kent somehow failed to score the nine runs they needed for victory from 15 balls despite having four wickets in hand. And their finish was all the more disappointing because for much of the innings, Kent looked on course to reach what would have been a domestic record score of 345 for victory.Instead the visitors’ challenge ended when former England all-rounder Mark Ealham was caught off the first ball of the final over, with Somerset winning by five runs.”The game was lost there for a while – I still can’t believe that we won,” said Cox, the 32-year-old Tasmanian.“But some magnificent bowling and fielding meant we managed to get it back.”We believe we can win from any situation and that was shown today when we came through in that fashion.”We have a very proud history in my time at the club in this competition and it will be special going back to Lord’s.”Earlier Ian Blackwell’s quickfire 86 off 53 balls took Somerset to their huge total. And he followed that up by dismissing Kent’s hard-hitting Queensland batsman Andrew Symonds for 55 and taking a fine midwicket catch to get rid of Matthew Walker. But it was substitute fielder Simon Francis who swung the game Somerset’s way.In the penultimate over he produced a magnificent piece of fielding to stop James Golding’s off-drive and then threw down the stumps to run him out at the bowler’s end while lying prone on the outfield. The Trophy final takes place at Lord’s on Saturday, August 31.But Somerset’s opponents are still unknown after the semi-final between Surrey and Yorkshire at Headingley was completely washed out for a second successive day.If no play is possible tomorrow, then a bowl-out will decide who the other finalists are in England’s senior one-day competition.

Spurs ‘close’ to signing Tomiyasu

According to a report by Italian news outlet Corriere dello Sport, via Sport Witness, Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu is ‘close’ to joining Tottenham Hotspur – but there’s one caveat involving Fabio Paratici.

The Lowdown: Tomiyasu in talks, still…

Tottenham have been in talks to sign the Japan international since the start of this month, with Sky Sports first revealing that Spurs had an offer of around £12.9m (€15m) plus an extra £2.6m (€3m) in add-ons rejected.

Since that point, Spurs have been working to come to an agreement over Tomiyasu and the Athletic’s update last week looked very promising.

It was claimed that the Lilywhites are ‘closing in’ on the 22-year-old with both Bologna and Spurs ‘finalising terms’.

The Latest: Spurs ‘close’, but there’s been a Paratici twist…

According to Corriere dello Sport (translated by Sport Witness), Tottenham are still ‘close’ to signing Tomiyasu but there may be one caveat which involves managing director Paratici.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-updates/” title=”Tottenham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As per the Italian news source, Spurs’ new transfer guru, as it stands, is unwilling to reach Bologna’s €25 million (£21.6m) asking price ‘between fixed part and bonuses asked for’.

It seems Tottenham’s move to sign the versatile defender rests on Paratici’s shoulders and whether or not he will increase his bid, with the 49-year-old seemingly prioritising other transfers at this point.

The Verdict: On the back burner…

Whether or not Spurs reach £21.6m for the 23-cap ace remains to be seen, but he could certainly be worth the trouble based off his stats and accolades from last season.

Tomiyasu was a key player for Bologna over 2020/2021, averaging the joint-most clearances per match in their squad over 31 Serie A starts (WhoScored).

Lauded as a ‘giant’ by the Italian press for his performances, while this move could be placed on the back burner for now, Tottenham definitely shouldn’t give up the chase.

Fulham set to miss out on Ike Ugbo

Fulham look to have failed in their attempts to bring Ike Ugbo to Craven Cottage this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Fabrizio Romano, who revealed in a post on Twitter that the Chelsea centre-forward has now agreed terms with Belgian side KRC Genk ahead of a summer switch.

The journalist goes on to state that the 22-year-old wants to join the Jupiler Pro League as quickly as possible, with the deal expected to be completed in the coming days.

Previous reports had claimed that Fulham, as well as Premier League side West Ham United, were also keen on a move for the former England U20 international this summer, however, it now appears as if the London duo have missed out on the striker’s signing.

Opportunity missed

While Chelsea themselves rarely benefit directly from their own relentless production line, the Blues academy often presents opportunities for so-called smaller sides to reap the rewards of the champions of Europe’s youth setup, with Ugbo being the latest example of this.

Having joined the Blues at the age of eight, the centre-forward failed to make a single senior appearance during his 14-year spell at Chelsea, despite having highly impressed during a number of loan spells away from the club.

Indeed, over his 32 Jupiler Pro League appearances for Cercle Brugge last season, the £4.05m-rated man scored 16 goals, as well as taking an average of 1.8 shots and making 0.5 key passes per game.

These returns saw the man the Belgian media dubbed a “decisive” player earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.79, ranking him as Yves Vanderhaeghe’s eighth-best performer in the Belgian top flight.

The £38k-per-week striker also impressed for Roda JC Kerkrade in the season before last, bagging 13 goals and registering three assists over his 28 appearances in the second tier of Dutch football.

So, while Chelsea clearly believe that Ugbo is not of the standard required to feature on a regular basis for their first team, it is evident that the Blues have nevertheless produced an extremely capable goalscorer.

And, with the 22-year-old reported to be available to purchase for a fee between €3 and €5m (£2.5m and £4.3m), there very much appeared to be the opportunity for Fulham to land an extremely talented player who has spent 14 years developing at one of the most prestigious clubs in the world for next to nothing this summer.

However, with Genk looking as if they have beaten the Cottagers to the signing of the youngster, this opportunity is one that now seems to have passed the club by – and we would not bet against the west London side coming to regret not pushing harder to land the striker at some point in the not too distant future.

Ryder bats through most of day for 181 for NZ Academy

Hawke’s Bay batsman Jesse Ryder gave another demonstration of his batting worth when scoring 181 for the New Zealand Academy on day two of their three-day match with the Australian Academy at Townsville yesterday

Lynn McConnell05-Aug-2002Hawke’s Bay batsman Jesse Ryder gave another demonstration of his batting worth when scoring 181 for the New Zealand Academy on day two of their three-day match with the Australian Academy at Townsville yesterday.Academies from the two countries and South Africa are taking part in a special series of games over the next fortnight.Ryder, a key member of the New Zealand Under-19 team at the ICC Under-19 World Cup earlier this year, played a much more sedate role than the hard-hitting demonstrations he gave then.He faced 299 balls during his innings and hit 27 fours and one six.Australia batted first and lost three wickets quickly. Kyle Mills had an especially welcome return when taking a wicket with his first ball, courtesy of a leg before wicket decision. Australia were 56/4.Australia’s response was led by Liam Buchanan, who took 16 from off-spinner Jeetan Patel’s first three deliveries and by lunch they were 70/4 off 23 overs.Buchanan and Mark Cosgrove increased the momentum of the innings with Buchanan’s half century coming off 43 balls. He added 102 runs with Cosgrove and went on to score his century off only 92 balls with some fine shots in front of the wicket and some severe pull shots. However, when on 109 he chased a wider ball from Joseph Yovich and edged it to Ryder in the slips.Patel came back into his own once Buchanan was out and had the wicket of Beau Casson for 12. Australia eventually declared at 325/8.James McMillan took three for 74, and Mills two for 58. New Zealand’s over rate was very slow and there were problems with no-balling.New Zealand suffered a setback when Shanan Stewart was dismissed off the first ball of the innings and when play was abandoned early due to shadows on the pitch, New Zealand were 15/1.Due to the slow over rate of the first day, play started 30 minutes early on the second day. Jordan Sheed was the first wicket to fall when the score was 57. However, opener Ryder contained his usual aggression and produced an outstanding display of his potential. His 50 came up in 129 minutes off 105 balls. As he and Rob Nicol combined in a fine second wicket stand of 190, they took full toll of the tiring Australian attack.Ryder’s century was scored in 246 minutes off 199 balls while Nicol’s half-century took 114 minutes off 101 balls. Nicol was first out for 78 just before the tea break. However, while Ryder continued to build his innings, the incoming batsmen were too keen to get on with the job and when play finished on the day New Zealand were 348/7. Brett Geeves took three for 55 and Aaron Bird three for 29 for Australia.

Indian players and ICC close to compromise

Newspaper reports from London and inputs from New Delhi suggest that top Indian cricketers and the International Cricket Council (ICC) have reached an agreement on the contract issue that has dogged the warm-up to the ICC Champions Trophy in Sri

Anand Vasu06-Sep-2002Newspaper reports from London and inputs from New Delhi suggest that top Indian cricketers and the International Cricket Council (ICC) have reached an agreement on the contract issue that has dogged the warm-up to the ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka.Speaking to CricInfo, Niranjan Shah, honorary secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said, “We have not received anything in writing from the players. Even if some agreement is reached, the players still have to sign the relevant contracts and give copies to the board.”It was earlier reported that the ICC and the players had reached a compromise agreement, wherein the following changes had been agreed on:1) The ICC would not have image rights to Indian cricketers. Previously, the ICC and its sponsors had the right to use footage and photographs of the Indian players for their campaigns for a period of six months.2) The Indian players will be allowed to advertise with rival sponsors shortly after the end of the ICC Champions Trophy. Under the earlier clause, cricketers could not advertise with rivals of the official sponsors of the ICC, for a period of 30 days before and after the tournament – and of course for the duration of the tournament. It is believed that this period has been reduced to a level acceptable to both parties in conflict and might actually work out to a figure of 17 days after the tournament.Shah further told CricInfo, “If the players have reached an agreement with the ICC, the Board is only too happy. It was good that the players could meet and sort things out. However, I must tell you that we have not got anything in writing from the players or the ICC so far on this matter.”A point of major concern to the board however, was its exposure to liability from various parties in case a fresh agreement is reached. “Let me make it very clear at this point itself. If the players reach any kind of agreement with the ICC and resolve the matter that is fine. But it must not cause any liability to the Board, now or on a future date,” added the secretary. It must be remembered that an ICC press release yesterday categorically denied that it was seeking any compensation from the Indian board in connection to this matter. The release goes on to say, “What has occurred today is that the BCCI sought a blanket indemnity from any damages claim that may be made in the future against it or the ICC in relation to the ICC Champions Trophy. It sought this undertaking from all other countries playing in the tournament. This request was considered by the countries and it was agreed that such an undertaking could not be given.”As it stands, there have been no claims for compensation from either the ICC or other countries. However, this does not guarantee that such claims may not arise in the future. With regard to this, the ICC says, “Should a claim emerge in the future, it would be a matter for that time to determine who, if anyone was at fault and the size, if any, of any compensation payout.”That might be the one clause that makes emphatic cries of a happy ending a bit premature. That said, this sticky issue has never been closer to amicable resolution. The Board secretary himself was confident, and concluded, “Hopefully, by the end of the day, we’ll be able to work things out and send our best team to the Champions Trophy.”
