Celtic: Should Postecoglou sign Ryan Gauld?

Blink twice and you’ll miss it; that’s the order of the day when analysing the style of football Ange Postecoglou could bring with him to Celtic.

The Hoops finally announced their new manager on Thursday morning as the Australian entered Parkhead with the promise of getting straight down to business in the transfer market.

Celtic’s summer plans have been thrown into disarray after their pursuit of Eddie Howe collapsed. He already had various targets in mind but the goalposts have moved now Postecoglou is at the helm.

The 55-year-old favours an attacking brand of football, one which involves a high press. Therefore, in order to settle into his rhythm as quickly as possible, he’ll need to find players who suit what he wants in the final third.

The Bhoys already possess a number of captivating weapons in forward areas. James Forrest missed a large portion of last season with injury but scored 16 goals in 2019/20. Player of the Year, David Turnbull, will also look to make an instant impact under the new boss.

That being said, it’s an individual in the mould of Turnbull whom Postecoglou should look to bring to Paradise.

That happens to be a certain Ryan Gauld, who has had a one-year contract extension triggered with Portuguese side Farense but Celtic were one of the clubs being tipped to sign him by fan media.

Gauld left Scotland as a teenager when he took the brave decision of moving to Sporting Lisbon. Now a Portuguese speaker with Brazilian flair, the 25-year-old possesses technical qualities rarely seen in Scottish players.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-news-faria-postecoglou-howe-elyounoussi” title= “Read the latest Celtic news!”]

Calls were made for him to be included in Steve Clarke’s squad for the European Championship but he missed out despite scoring nine goals and registering seven assists this term. It’s likely that Turnbull was given a place ahead of him, but the duo could work in beautiful tandem if he moves to Celtic.

Gauld has matured significantly while in Portugal, taking his tally for Liga NOS outfit Farense to 20 goals in 71 outings. Described as a “complete” player by his manager Sergio Vieira, the attacking midfielder could ensure Postecoglou starts his Celtic tenure with a bang.

He already knows the Premiership and has the attacking qualities to thrive in the Australian’s system. In 2020/21, the former Dundee United gem recorded 2.4 shots, 2.3 key passes and 1.3 dribbles per game.

For context, that’s more attempts on goal than Turnbull (2.2) and also more dribbles (0.4). Based on that, they would likely complement each other in the middle very well.

The Hoops need vibrant young players approaching the prime of their careers this summer; Gauld certainly ticks that box and would be a stellar acquisition. His attacking brand of football would suit the new manager perfectly.

AND in other news, Postecoglou could find Celtic’s new Mark Viduka by signing “clinical” 41-goal bully…

Te Beeste carves second comprehensive victory for Netherlands

Pauline te Beeste made a magnificent 90 off 117 balls to guide Netherlands to their second thumping victory over Pakistan women in the 7-match one-day series, being played at the National Stadium, Karachi

Mahmood Ahmad18-Apr-2001Pauline te Beeste made a magnificent 90 off 117 balls to guide Netherlands to their second thumping victory over Pakistan women in the 7-match one-day series, being played at the National Stadium, Karachi.Requiring 157 to win the match, Netherlands women romped home in 39.5 overs with 6 wickets to spare, with te Beeste and van Leeuwan (18 off 35 balls, 1 four) leading the way with a 77-run second wicket partnership.Te beeste then added 47 for the 3rd wicket with her skipper Salomons before getting out just 10 short of what would have been the first century of the series.Salomons remained not out on 21 off 47 balls and Toussaint had got one before the required runs were knocked off in the 40th over.Earlier, Pakistan won the toss for the 6th time in as many matches and put the opposition into bat for the first time in the series. The decision seemed right at first as the opening pair of Zehmurad Afzal and Rabia Khan added 47 for the first wicket in 9.5 overs.Netherlands met their first success when Jharap, the right-arm fast medium bowler, accounted for the in-form Zehmurad for 20 (38 balls, 1 four). Rabia Khan made 18 (32 ball, 2 fours) before being run out at the total of 59 in the 15th over.Shiaza Khan, the skipper, faced just two balls before being caught by Toussaint off Van Leeuwan for naught. After that, all resistance in the home team’s batting line up just withered out, with wickets falling at regular intervals.Only two of the remaining batswomen – Khursheed Jabeen and Mahewish Khan – could reach into double figures, before the whole team was bundled out for paltry 156 in 49.4 overs.Salomons, the Dutch skipper, used nine bowlers during the innings and all of them proved almost equally generous in giving away extra runs. At the end of Pakistan innings the scoreboard showed 64 extras, of which 56 were wides.Te Beeste was the most successful bowler for the visitors getting 2 for 11 in 3 overs. H Rambaldo also claimed two wickets for 13 in 5 overs. Jharap, van Leeuwen and Salomons got one wicket each.Te Beeste hit two consecutive boundaries in Kiran Baluch’s 5th over to bring up her fifty, the second of the series, in 74 balls, which contained in all nine hits to the fence. The hundred of the Netherlands innings came up in 25 overs, when Sajjida Shah bowled a leg side wide.Te Beeste was duly awarded the player of the match after her magnificent effort with the bat.The last match of the series will be played under lights on Saturday, April 21.

How may Everton look under Nuno Santo?

Everton were given a huge boost in their chase for a new manager on Wednesday morning.

The Toffees had interviewed Nuno Santo for the vacant managerial role but were facing strong competition from Crystal Palace.

A deal had been agreed and he was closing in on a move to Selhurst Park after resigning at Wolves. However, the plug was pulled on a move which has now given Everton a free run at luring him to Merseyside.

If he does arrive then it will understandably change the complexion of Everton. Nuno has favoured a three-man defensive shape but tried to migrate Wolves into a team that played with four defenders last term.

Though, a move to Goodison Park could give him the license to be more attacking.

With that in mind, we’ve had a go at predicting his starting XI once the transfer window closes, if he does take over at Everton…

Much of the team remains the same from last season but crucially for the Toffees, they keep Dominic Calvert-Lewin despite interest from Manchester United.

One player who could arrive and join the Englishman in attack is Pedro Neto.

The Portuguese starred under Nuno at Wolves, scoring five goals and assisting six strikes on his way to being crowned the Old Gold’s Player of the Season for 2020/21.

A £50m move to Man United has been touted but he has his admirers at Everton as well.

The second addition to this team is in midfield where another Portuguese dynamo could sign on the dotted line.

Joao Palhinha has been linked with a move to Merseyside and could favour a switch to Goodison if his fellow countryman becomes their new manager. It’s thought Sporting Lisbon will require a fee of £35m in order to let him go.

The final transfer is at right-back where Seamus Coleman is ousted for Ainsley Maitland-Niles, another player who’s caught the eye of Everton.

The Arsenal man prefers to play in the middle of the park but his versatility could be a huge asset to Nuno.

A fee of £20m may be needed in order to prise him away from north London, leading to a potential spend of £105m from Marcel Brands.

Nuno wanted to sign Maitland-Niles when he was at Wolves so there is a real chance that he could want him at his next club too.

After all, Coleman’s contract expires in the summer of 2022 so they will need to think of younger alternatives moving forward.

White shines on slow third day

The third day of England’s last practice game before the First Test Match in Galle was a weary affair

The third day of England’s last practice game before the First Test Match in Galle was a weary affair. The English displayed admirable tenacity, but not a great deal of adventure as they remorsefully plodded and padded their way through the day.As a smattering of locals stood patiently by in the picturesque Uyanwatte Stadium, the English batsmen added 244 runs in 97 overs and finished the day on 418 for seven when bad light stopped play. They can now roll out the bowlers tomorrow for one final trundle.England, of course, are under no obligation to make this a festive affair. The real business is now just five days away and the time spent playing the Sri Lanka board President’s XI spinners, one of whom is likely to partner Muttiah Muralitharan in Galle, was surely valuable.Alec Stewart, for one, would be glad to have spent his three hours at the crease during the first half of the day. He disappointed in Pakistan with scores of 3, 27*, 13, 22, 29 and 5 in the Test series and is the only top order batsman to have not passed fifty so far in Sri Lanka. However, he made good use of his final innings before the Test and, although he lacked fluency in his 40 runs and had to wait 133 balls for his solitary boundary, his feet were moving with greater conviction when a leg spinner from Malinga Bandara finally bowled him.It was Craig White, however, who dominated the day. He came into bat after Michael Vaughan was well caught by Hashan Tillakaratne at silly point, off Muthumudalige Pushpakumara’s first ball, to leave England 247 for five.Stewart and White then added 63 for the sixth wicket, 39 of which were made by the confident White. It was the highlight of the day as White bristled with positive intent during the early part of his innings and took the attack to the Sri Lankan spinners. Using his feet he swung Pushpakumara over long on for six and lofted Bandara over extra cover for four.Like he had done in Colombo last week, where he scored 63 and 39, he was, however, heavily dependent upon the sweep shot and when the Sri Lankan’s countered this with a defensive leg side field, he struggled to score runs with the same freedom.Nevertheless, he pushed on, refusing to be forced into throwing away his wicket by the negativity of the spinners. At the close of play he remained unbeaten on 85 from 227 deliveries.Following Stewart’s dismissal he added 32 runs with Ashley Giles, who showed little discomfort from the stiffness in his Achilles tendon during his 67-minute stay at the crease, and then an unbeaten 76 for the eighth wicket with Robert Croft, who had scored 30 not out by the close. The Sri Lankan’s waited an unbelievable 153 overs before taking the second new ball. When they did the opening fast bowler, Ruchira Perera, was champing at the bit and became involved in an altercation with Craig White. The two players exchanged words after a bouncer from Perera and umpire TH Wijewardane was forced to intervene.Earlier in the day Dinusha Fernando had bowled Michael Atherton for the third time of the tour, this time by a delivery that nipped back through bat and pad. Graham Thorpe had completed an industrious half-century, his first of the tour, before being caught and bowled by Bandaratilleke.Afterwards, Atherton was quick to pay tribute to Craig White’s worth to the England team: “He’s probably at the top of his game at the moment,” Atherton said. “You can see from the way he comes in and takes on the spinners from the word go, and is batting like a man who is high on confidence and feeling good about his game.”He feels a key part of the team which he is because he is in the linchpin position at number seven and the third seamer.”

Matabeleland cricket report

The Matabeleland selectors have finalized the side to play Mashonaland this weekend, leaving Jason Hitz out of the named 13 with Munir Makadam as 12th man

Derrick Townshend15-Feb-2002The Matabeleland selectors have finalized the side to play Mashonaland this weekend, leaving Jason Hitz out of the named 13 with Munir Makadam as 12th man. The team has not as yet been announced. The decision to omit Jason Hitz from the 13 is rather harsh as he was twelfth man for the whole of last season and attended every practice; his batting has improved through the current season beyond all recognition, anda better team man is hard to find.It is always pleasing to see new caps and youngsters being given a chance but it may well prove costly in the batting, with new cap Norman Mukondiwa having not only to prove his bowling skills but also to show he is capable of batting and seeing his team through to a good score which is of utmost importance in the four-day game. Matabeleland have a reasonable bowling line up and, should the bowlers perform to standard, be capable of holding their own against a weakenedMashonaland side.Townshend, who has been bowling well recently will share the new ball with new cap Mupariwa, with Mukondiwa, McKillop and Strydom providing the seam attack and the spinners, Ewing and Mercury, doing most of the bowling if Matabeleland are unable to dismiss the opposition for a reasonable score. It has been very hot in Bulawayo for this time of the year, temperatures being far higher than normal, 32-36 degrees and no rain, so a fast outfield and a batting-friendly wicket could well be the order of the day. Following a further practice, and discussions on the composition of the team, it was decided to change the lineup and include Jason Hitz, omitting Norman Mukandiwa, which adds some batting strength to the tail.Player profilesTawanda Mupariwa – born 16/4/85, Bulawayo.
