The rising star who has become the object of Premier League club’s affections

In the aftermath of England’s 3-0 victory away in Bulgaria, Wayne Rooney came away with most of the plaudits after his 2-goal performance helped seal the win. But it was the other goalscorer that many pundits considered as the real man of the match, with a rock solid display in the heart of central defence, culminating in a clean sheet for his country, topping it all off with his first international goal. That player is Gary Cahill – a man who at 25-years old is finally enjoying his time in the limelight.

The man whose name was on many people’s lips throughout the summer transfer window has experienced an unprecedented amount of interest over the last 12-months, all culminating in a chaotic couple of days which saw him start, and score, for England during a competitive international, and being subject to the uncertainties of where he would be plying his trade as the drama of the transfer deadline day unfolded.

Gary Cahill is now a very much a wanted man. But if his rise to prominence seems meteoric due to the fame and interest of the last 12-months, it may seem surprising for many to learn he’s actually been playing in the Premiership since 2004, breaking through the ranks at Aston Villa. A few seasons on loan spent at Burnley and Sheffield United (his home town) saw him gain first team experience before establishing himself at the heart of Villa’s defence, even scoring a wonder goal – an overhead kick, in his first midlands derby. Interest gathered and in the January transfer window of 2008, Bolton Wanderers, on the advice of head scout Colin Harvey, plumped to sign him. It didn’t take long for the centre-back to become a firm favourite with the Trotters fans, where he remains this season, in the final year of his contract – despite the ongoing interest from the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea.

The host of Premier League clubs have been chasing Cahill’s signature since last season and many tipped the defender to leave this summer. However nobody stepped forward in meeting Bolton’s valuation of the player, thought to be around the £15 million mark. When Arsenal did come forward with an offer, their £6 million bid was instantly dismissed as ‘derisory’ by both Bolton’s Chairman and manager Owen Coyle who stated: ‘When I make an offer for a player, I’d like to think it’s in the right ball park. But this wasn’t even close. I’m only passing it on as a third party, but the word derisory doesn’t even cover it.’ Arsenal didn’t return and despite Harry Redknapp’s late desperation for the player, Tottenham failed to come up with the money on deadline day, ensuring Cahill will remain at Bolton until January at least.

[ad_pod id=’vip-2′ align=’center’]

To Cahill’s credit, the amount of interest shown in him from the bigger clubs (with all respect to Bolton) hasn’t swayed his attitude or commitment to Bolton’s cause. He has never kicked up a fuss and never looked to capitalise on the interest by handing in a transfer request unlike Messrs Modric, Meireles and Nasri. Or maybe he chose to remain, confident in the knowledge that if form is maintained, he can have his pick of whoever comes calling when his contract expires at the end of this season.

Cahill seems a down to earth character with his feet still firmly on the ground. As a teenager he played Sunday football for Sheffield side AFC Dronfield and still stays in touch with the club: ‘I still call in and visit whenever I’m around the area and have helped out in training and had a kick about with some of the younger groups. It’s amazing if you go back all those years and think of where you are now. I am very proud of what I have achieved. As a young English player coming through, playing for your country is the highest honour you can get.’

The way his season has begun, Cahill’s form shows no signs of dipping and is only serving to intensify the hype surrounding his abilities. Unflappable but tough, with an eye for a spectacular goal, the defender seems to have now transferred his club attributes to the international stage – and that ensures that his stock will continue to rise for the foreseeable future.

Has Harry finally found his dream team?

The one ingredient often missing from Tottenham Hotspur last season was goals. Their three main strikers from last term Jermain Defoe, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Peter Crouch only managed 18 league goals between them, a poor record for a team chasing a top four place. When you consider that Manchester City, who were one of the teams to pip them to a Champions League spot, had Carlos Tevez who scored 20 goals alone, Spurs’ problem becomes even clearer. But after their new look strikeforce of Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor made a good first impression against Wolves at the weekend, has Harry Redknapp found his dream partnership to fire Spurs to success?

Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Wolves at the weekend can be seen as a real turning point for Redknapp’s team. They can put the heavy losses to the Premier League’s early leaders Manchester United and Manchester City behind them and take great encouragement from the fact that both Adebayor and Defoe got on the scoresheet. Building a formidable strikeforce is essential for teams across the leagues, especially those chasing honours and trying to compete against the best in the country.

On paper Adebayor and Defoe are the perfect big man, little man combo that has generated so much success in the Premier League before. Adebayor’s strength, speed and ability in the air should be the perfect foil for England striker Defoe, who should now have the freedom to drop deep or play off the last man. Having a successful season is crucial for both players, for Defoe he needs to put the woes of a bad campaign behind him whilst Adebayor will be keen to banish the doubters and win over the Tottenham faithful. Defoe also has a history of working with a big strike partner, most notably with former teammate Peter Crouch at Portsmouth and then Spurs. When both were fully fit and confident the partnership looked deadly and Defoe must look to recreate that success with Adebayor.

[ad_pod id=’vip-2′ align=’centre’]

The key for success when it comes down to Adebayor and Defoe as a strike partnership will be consistency. There was a distinct lack of consistency amongst Tottenham’s strikers last season as all three failed to find the target on a regular basis. Defoe and Adebayor will need to be given the opportunity to gel as a unit so both can fully profit from having a partner next to them. Adebayor and Defoe as a strikeforce will obviously only be utlisied when Redknapp opts for a 4-4-2 formation, so Redknapp’s tactical choices will play a big part as to whether the pair can be a success. Adebayor’s mobility as a lone striker means he can play up front on his own but the movement and link-up play with Defoe in a 4-4-2 would be the better option for Spurs.

The only problem holding back the partnership may be Rafael Van der Vaart. The Dutch international is currently suffering with a hamstring injury whilst his outburst over his omission from Tottenham’s Europa League squad has left a slightly black cloud over a player so readily loved after his arrival from Real Madrid last summer. Tactically though when he returns from injury Redknapp may look to deploy him behind a lone striker, ruling out any partnership between Defoe and Adebayor. There will obviously be times when a variation in formation will be required but Redknapp should look to utilise his new strikeforce to its full potential, which for me means playing both Defoe and Adebayor (whilst trying to find the optimum position for the amazingly talented but sometimes slightly troublesome Van der Vaart).

One thing after last season was clear, Tottenham needed goals. Redknapp has gone a long way to address that problem by bringing in Adebayor on loan and the striker’s arrival at White Hart Lane should also give Defoe the boost he needs to help rebuild his place in the Tottenham attack.

Arsenal 3-1 Stoke City – Match Review

Robin Van Persie was the Arsenal hero once again coming off the bench to score twice and claim victory over a Stoke side that look destined to leave the Emirates Stadium with a point.

The Dutchman was rested by Arsene Wenger but with the Gunners struggling to find a way past a formidable Potters defence he came on continue his prolific run in front of goal which has seen him now score 29 goals in 34 games. The hosts also cured their European hangover that had seem them lose each of the four fixtures that had preceded a Champions league fixture. They certainly had the fresher legs after having a days extra rest than Stoke who were in Europa League action on Thursday night. Despite having only a few days to recharge their batteries Tony Pulis’ men looked good value for a point after Peter Crouch struck 10 minutes before half time to cancel out Gervinho’s opener before Van Persie’s double sealed victory. The result saw Arsenal leapfrog their opponents into seventh place as they continued their rise up the table with a sixth win in seven games.

Defeat was harsh on the visitors though as they defended superbly to repel wave after wave of attacks from the home side but they found themselves one behind on 27 minutes with Gervinho scoring his second goal in Arsenal red. Aaron Ramsey’s delightful clip over the top of the Stoke defence was expertly controlled by the Ivorian bringing the ball down on his chest retaining his composure to slot the ball past Asmir Begovic. That goal should have seen the home side take the ascendancy but the visitors fought back taking a foothold on the game and their efforts were rewarded when Crouch side footed home Jon Walters knock down. Ryan Shawcross and Matthew Upsonhelped the ball on in the box following Arsenal’s protestations a free kick awarded after Laurent Koscielny fouled the England striker who snapped up his chance without hesitation.

Both sides faded after the break with the game calling out for some inspiration and Wenger duly obliged sending Van Persie on to win the game. He did just that turning in Gervinho’s cross six minutes after coming on to send a wave of relief soaring around the Emirates. He wasn’t finished there though as he put the Stoke defence to the sword once again eight minutes from time with Gervinho again providing the cross for his captain to hammer the ball past Begovic stretching the Gunners unbeaten run to five games and making their horrendous start to the season a distant memory.

FA backs John Terry inclusion

The English FA have backed Fabio Capello’s decision to include John Terry in his England squad to face Spain and Sweden in upcoming friendlies, and denies any rift between the organisation and the Italian coach.

Terry’s inclusion in the national side was up for debate as he is currently under investigation due to claims of racism made by QPR defender Anton Ferdinand.

Despite this, the Chelsea man will represent his country in the exhibition games, and this move has been backed by Club England managing director Adrian Bevington.

“There was a lot of conjecture about this subject last week and some stories and certain media outlets suggested that there might have been some disagreement between Fabio and the FA,” Bevington told Sky Sports.

“I can confirm that there was nothing of that sort.

“We can’t comment on specific issues, but what we can say is that these are allegations and therefore Fabio was perfectly entitled (to pick Terry) and we agree with this.

“There are allegations in place and nothing has been proved against anybody. So Fabio picked John Terry and we support that decision,” he concluded.

Meanwhile Spain have named a strong squad for the game against England, with Andres Iniesta included after injury and Cesc Fabregas travelling back to London for the game.

What to do with Ravel Morrison?

When the team was announced for Tuesday’s game against Benfica, there seemed to be a collective Red groan that Darron Gibson had made the bench, seemingly at the expense of Ravel Morrison .

It amazed me as I scanned the wonderful interweb, how many United fans were incredulous at the fact Gibson, a player who’d helped the team through to the Champions League final with a goal against Schalke in his last European appearance, was in the squad, while Morrison wasn’t.

I’ve long advocated giving Morrison a chance in the first team, not only as he could add some much needed enthusiasm and skill to a side which at times seems lacking in both, but also because the added responsibility could help the youngster move away from the nonsense which has almost derailed his career.

The upcoming fixtures for United are ones that could be ideal fpr giving an untried youngster a chance in the first team as with all due respect to our opponents, while they’re not ‘easy’ after all as last season, proved there are no long any ‘easy’ games in the Premier League, they’re not the most difficult games either.

There is a flip side to the argument though, the idea that for a player such as Morrison who’s obviously had his problems, patience may be a better option, after all, as I’ve already mentioned the games United have coming up should be winnable without a untried teenager.

Personally I’d like to see Morrison given a chance sooner rather than later, but if he isn’t it may well prove to be another masterstroke from Sir Alex Ferguson, as when the time comes, the Mancunian will be truly ready to make the step up.

What do my fellow Reds think, is it time to give Morrison a chance? Does fortune favour the brave? Or is it better not to rush this precocious talent?

The top TEN footballing returns from ‘Hell’

Thierry Henry’s proposed return to Arsenal has been met with mixed emotions by fans. There are those for whom the necessity for the acquisition of a striker who knows both the club and the league well is outweighed by the desire not to see their record goal scorer’s reputation tarnished by performances that could, in reality, never live up to their memory of the Frenchman. Returning to a former club is far from an exact science in terms of success; for every Mark Hughes or Juninho there are ten others who failed to live up to their former glory. There will always be that fear of knowing when the right time to return is and possibly pushing your luck with a second spell, but some players and clubs just can’t help it. Look at Henry and Arsenal: on the one hand Arsenal need another striker capable of scoring goals and who better to go for than their record goal scorer, especially when they don’t have to pay any money for him. On the other hand he is thirty four years old and, with all due respect to the MLS, has been out of top level football for over two years. Exciting though it may be for fans to see their heroes grace the pitch once more, there is an air of desperation about such moves and trying to lure back aging stars hardly smacks of either forward planning or long term vision.

So who are the least successful returnees of the Premier League?

City and Chelsea confirm transfer interest

Roberto Mancini has admitted that Manchester City are interested in signing Lille’s highly rated playmaker Eden Hazard, as a scramble for the attacking midfielder’s services in the summer is set to ensue.

The Belgium international has been the standout performer in French domestic football for quite some time now, and excellent performances last term inspired Rudy Garcia’s men to the Ligue 1 championship title.

The superstar looks set to leave the French club in the summer, and Mancini has expressed his interest in bringing him to the Etihad Stadium.

“Hazard has an enormous level of talent and is able to play at the maximum level. But we know there is interest from the big European clubs and any deal will not be easy,” Mirror Football quote the Italian coach as stating to French newspaper Le 10 Sport.

Meanwhile Chelsea are also thought to be keen to add the Belgian star to their ranks, with scout Guy Hillion holding Hazard in high regard.

“I was at the Lille-St Etienne match and the player has interested Chelsea since Frank Arnesen was at the club,” Hillion admitted.

“Personally, my reports have been excellent and I do think he can succeed in the Premier League.”

Real Madrid and Inter, amongst others, are known suitors of Hazard, with Lille valuing the player at £30 million+.

Fergie: Denis Law had everything

It has been a quite a week for Sir Alex Ferguson with two impressive wins sandwiching a personal accolade from FIFA for his achievements within the game. As Sepp Blatter pointed out at the Ballon d’Or gala; 25 years at the top level at a club of Manchester United’s stature is a phenomenal achievement and is unlikely to be replicated again within football.

Sir Alex was rightly touched by the award and the personal tributes he received from various footballing personalities, but what about the man himself and who were his heroes within the game? One of them is certainly no stranger to United fans, in fact it is the ‘King of Old Trafford’ himself Denis Law, who scored 237 goals in 404 games at Old Trafford.

Ferguson told Yahoo! Eurosport, “He epitomised to me everything about a Scotsman. He could start a row in an empty house, fight his own shadow, unbelievable courage, electric pace, exciting and dynamic to watch – I always loved Dennis as a player”

Ferguson also mentioned his admiration for Willie Woodburn and Willie Waddell, who he grew up watching play for his boyhood team Glasgow Rangers.

William Gallas talking up title chances

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe has stated that William Gallas has been urging the club’s players to have a winning mentality, and to go for the Premier League title rather than settling for a top four place.

The north London outfit have been one of the standout performers in the country this season, and are currently in third place in the top flight; Defoe has revealed Gallas’ motivational outlook.

“When Gallas was at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho, they were unbelievable,” Defoe told Mirror Football.

“They didn’t lose a game at home because they had that rock-solid belief.

“He passes that all on to us and tells us to stop settling for fourth place and qualifying for the Champions League, like we did two years ago.

“He tells us to think, first and foremost, about finishing top. Hopefully the top two will slip up. You never know what will happen between now and the end of the season.

“The other day, I was having a conversation with him and he was saying that he doesn’t understand anyone within the squad who thinks we can finish fourth or even third.

“If you look at the players we have got, the way we play and where we are in the League now, why can’t we win it?”

“William has been there and he has done it.

“He told me about his time at Chelsea, where he and the other players had that arrogance in that, whoever they played against, they believed they could win.

“And he keeps saying that we need to really believe we can actually win it. Forget about finishing fourth,” he concluded.
