After waxing lyrical about Matty Cash’s debut season with Aston Villa, Paul Robinson believes Dean Smith’s side pulled off an excellent deal on the “outstanding” man, who Leeds were also circling during the summer, as per Football Insider.

The Whites were eyeing up a swoop for the former Nottingham Forest ace last season. The right-back bagged himself three goals and five assists in 42 Championship games. He also contributed 14 clean sheets and showcased his versatility by operating on the wing on several occasions, via Transfermarkt.

A player of Cash’s calibre would’ve been a good fit for Marcelo Bielsa and his Championship-winning Whites. However, had Andrea Radrizzani made a move for the £65,000 per week defender, it would have likely posed a huge threat to Luke Ayling’s position within the club.

Signing Cash could have been trouble for Ayling

The Bielsa’s favourite played a huge part in his side’s promotion last season, both defensively and in attack. The 29-year-old has also been a key player in Leeds’ returning Premier League campaign, starting every top-flight match so far and contributing to three clean sheets.

But had Leeds brought in a younger player in his position, it’s hard to predict whether he would be seeing much game time at all this season. According to WhoScored, Cash averaged more clearances (3) and tackles (2.6) per league game, than Ayling with an average of 1.8 for both facets.

The new Villa recruit also had better discipline, picking up seven yellow cards to Ayling’s nine. Even this season, Cash has a better passing percentage so far (78.4%) and more interceptions (2.9) compared to the Leeds dynamo’s 77.5% and 0.3 respectively.

Whilst Ayling is very much part of the furniture at Elland Road, there’s no knowing whether the arrival of Cash would have elbowed him out of the spotlight and away from Bielsa’s attention.

Either way, he can count his lucky stars that Cash did not arrive in Yorkshire this summer.

وشدد كارتيرون على أن مباراة الزمالك المقبلة أمام الإسماعيلي لن تكون سهلة، ولكن الفريق لديه تركيز كامل لتحقيق الفوز.

Sunderland’s season has been a topsy-turvy affair.

Is that really very surprising? It shouldn’t be if you’re familiar with what’s happened in the last five years.

The Black Cats suffered back to back relegations and try as they might, they can’t seem to get out of League One.

Their ambitions of doing so took another meaty blow this week, too.

On the chalkboard

Ahead of Sunderland’s clash with Fleetwood on Friday evening Phil Parkinson delivered some frustrating news in his pre-match press conference.

Speaking to the north-east media, he confirmed that Lynden Gooch had picked up an ankle injury.

Parkinson said: “He’ll have an injection tomorrow [Friday] which we hope will speed up that recovery, but we are probably looking at between two and four weeks without Lynden.”

The manager continued: “That’s a blow because he has been exceptional for us this season, but we have to take the advice of the specialist and make sure that Lynden is right and he is flying for us when he comes back.”

As the Sunderland boss states, the American has been brilliant for the Black Cats this term, scoring two goals and registering a team-high four assists.

The attacking midfielder has been Sunderland’s most consistent performer in the final third so losing him will be a bitter loss.

The solution?

Who Sunderland see as their Gooch replacement in the next few weeks remains to be seen. There have been hints that Elliott Embleton could make a return and play more regularly but this injury may have just handed a lifeline to someone else on the fringes at the Stadium of Light.

That happens to be Aiden McGeady.

Parkinson’s views on the Irishman are quite clear. He transfer listed the winger last season and banished him from the senior squad. With that in mind, it looked as though he’d played his final game for the Mackems.

However, McGeady started for the U23s at the beginning of last week and could well make a first-team return in the future.

Parkinson seemed more positive about the 34-year-old’s chances when questioned about his surprise outing this week, stating: “He came back [this season] with a couple of niggly problems, he has had an injection in his knee which then needed rest, and then we have put together a programme for him similar to the one the lads did in pre-season to get him up to speed.

“I’ve just said to Aiden ‘let’s get you fit, then we’ll sit down and assess everything’, because until he is fit and flying, there’s no discussion to be had really.”

Therefore, for McGeady to even be considered before Gooch comes back he’ll need to get fit.

Playing 60 odd minutes was a good start and if he does prove his sharpness, there is no question he has to be picked. After all, this is someone with unquestionable ability, someone previously described by Neil Lennon as a “mercurial talent.”

It would be a shame to waste him.

Carlo Ancelotti must get ruthless and sever Jonjoe Kenny’s 14-year association with Everton after being urged to solve a “very apparent” lack of depth in defence.

What’s the word?

While speaking with Football Insider, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has urged Ancelotti to delve into the mid-season transfer market to sign new full-backs after witnessing Everton struggle without Seamus Coleman and Lucas Digne.

Coleman initially sustained an injury in October’s Merseyside Derby draw with Liverpool that forced his withdrawal from the Republic of Ireland squad to face England, but provoked his hamstring problem again after returning to action against Manchester United.

Ancelotti’s injury crisis worsened with Digne having to undergo surgery after suffering ankle ligament damage in training last month, which could rule the Frenchman out of action for up to three months.

Digne has provided more assists (4) than any other Everton player in the Premier League thus far this season, while also delivering a higher number of accurate crosses (17) and ranks second to James Rodriguez (23) for key balls (16), per WhoScored.

Ancelotti called on midfielders Alex Iwobi and Tom Davies to slot in at full-back for Saturday’s defeat to Championship title-holders Leeds United, something Robinson is adamant the Italian cannot persist with having urged Everton to spend on their defence this winter.

“Everton need to address the depth of their squad in January,” he said. “We saw against Leeds United that they lack squad depth, it was very apparent.

“The fact that Ancelotti had to play Iwobi at left wing-back and Tom Davies at right wing-back speaks volumes. When Seamus Coleman and Lucas Digne are missing, they are significantly weakened. It is something that has to be addressed in January. A stronger squad is needed.”

End of the road for Kenny

Ancelotti favouring Iwobi against Fulham last month would have raised alarm bells over Kenny’s future at Goodison Park, having been overlooked at Craven Cottage despite travelling with the squad to west London.

Davies then featuring in his position for Saturday’s clash with Leeds after Ancelotti stated the Blues product was fit and ready to feature again hammered home the sense that Kenny has reached the end of his road on Merseyside.

The challenging afternoon Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds dealt Davies has now only highlighted Everton’s lack of top-quality depth in full-back, too, leading pundits to urge Ancelotti and Director of Football Marcel Brands to splash the cash this winter to solve a “very apparent” problem.

Ancelotti must certainly get ruthless and end Kenny’s association with Everton if he is to strengthen at full-back as the 23-year-old, who first signed with the Toffees’ academy in 2006, is clearly not the Italian’s favoured option is far from proving himself to be Coleman’s long-term successor.
