Sunderland’s Benji Kimpioka could get rare chance to prove first-team credentials

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

The games continue to come thick and fast for Sunderland, but for manager Phil Parkinson the match against Leicester U21s provides him with the ideal chance to run the rule over the fringe players in his squad.

Laurens De Bock and Brandon Taylor could be involved again after being selected in the matchday squad in the last Leasing.com trophy fixture against Grimsby, with the latter starting at centre-back.

Another who looks set to get his chance is Benji Kimpioka, according to Phil Parkinson’s comments, and his inclusion is a great chance for him to stake his claim for long-term first-team involvement.

Some fans have called for the 19-year-old to be given an opportunity following a return of two goals in six games for the struggling under 23s, and a fixture against a team mainly made up of youngsters should prove suitable.

What’s more, game time has been limited for the winger in the senior side, and so far he has accumulated just nine minutes of playing time this term – none of which came under Jack Ross.

As a result, he should be determined to make the most of his opportunity, and with Lynden Gooch currently sidelined there is a vacant position at right-wing – Luke O’Nien had to play out of position in that role against Southend at the weekend.

Kimpioka seems to have that battling spirit, too, previously stating he will fight to earn a first-team place. He has showed signs of potential, enough for the club to try and pin him down to a long-term deal, and if he begins to show his ability against Grimsby he’ll likely get more chances.

Josh Maja and Denver Hume are recent examples of successful academy graduates, while Parkinson has a track-record of trusting youngsters, as evidenced by his time at Bolton when he introduced Luca Connell, who subsequently thrived and earned a move to Celtic, into the first team.

If Kimpioka can showcase his pace and direct style he will offer Sunderland an alternative option on the wing, and could begin to push for more substitute appearances and further starts in cup competitions – with Gillingham visiting in the FA Cup at the weekend.

Man United legend Gary Neville provides plenty of reason for optimism

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking on his podcast for Sky Sports, Gary Neville has suggested there is now some cause for optimism for Manchester United after their recent run of good form.

What did he say?

After losing to Newcastle 1-0 before the beginning of the last international break, the Red Devils have earned some consistently good results. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have racked up five wins from their previous six games, and are up to seventh in the Premier League – nine points off fourth-placed Manchester City who occupy the final Champions League qualifying spot.

And having seen his former side return to some decent form, Neville gave his take on some of the positives the Red Devils can take over the coming weeks and months.

He said: “Barring the Bournemouth defeat it’s been a really good month for United. The Bournemouth defeat was frustrating and took them back a few steps, but generally it’s been a better month than the one before.

“You can see real excitement with Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Daniel James, there is something there to work with. Defensively with Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, there is something there to work with, and the young boy Brandon Williams gives me a great deal of hope.

“Manchester United need four or five players of real quality and experience, and that’s probably not going to change in January to the tune fans would like. But there is something there. Patience is needed because it is going to take time, but they will get back because the cycle will turn.”

Cause for optimism

The 1-0 defeat to Newcastle over a month ago felt like a moment where United could have truly fallen into the mire. Reports immediately after the game claimed Solskjaer’s long-term future at the club was in question, but since then, they have been back to their fluid, attacking best.

Anthony Martial’s return from injury has coincided with multiple games now where they have scored more than one goal in a match, whilst against Brighton on Sunday afternoon, they fired 21 shots on goal. As Neville alludes to, there are some problems the club will have to address in the transfer market in the upcoming January window, but there are now clear signs they are heading in the right direction for progress to be made.

And in the seven players Neville name-checks, United do have the basis for a bright future. A group of young players who are yet to hit the peak years of their career, and a clear emphasis from their manager to play them.

Liverpool man Trent Alexander-Arnold’s inefficiency vs Kosovo a worrying trend

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

England ended their Euro 2020 campaign in style on Sunday as they beat Kosovo 4-0.

In a match that made more headlines for its historical significance rather than its importance from a footballing point of view, the Three Lions won 4-0. Harry Winks, Marcus Rashford, Harry Kane and Mason Mount grabbed the goals.

There were some worries for Gareth Southgate though. The Balkan nation managed just three shots on target, but that does not mean they did not threaten Nick Pope’s goal regularly. If England want to challenge at next year’s tournament, there are improvements to make.

One disappointing performance came from Trent Alexander-Arnold. The nine-cap Liverpool right-back is regarded as a creative force, contributing 16 assists in all competitions for the Reds last year, but the match in Pristina was not his finest hour.

Watch Liverpool Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

For example, his SofaScore rating of 6.8 was the second-worst amongst any England starter – interestingly, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, his teammate on Merseyside, came out worst with 6.7.

Managing 56% possession, you would have expected the 21-year-old to play a big part in the offensive play – after all, he does have an average of 3.5 chances created per match for his club in the Premier League – but he couldn’t even manage one here.

It was the Reds man’s inefficiency that was the most disappointing though. He won neither of the two duels he contested, whilst he also failed to beat his man on the single occasion he attempted to do so. Not only that, but he lost the ball 14 times, which was the most of any of his teammates and the second-most in the whole fixture, behind Milot Rashica.

This is becoming something of a trend for Alexander-Arnold. In the last four matches for either club or country, he has lost possession of the ball the most times on his side – 14 here against Kosovo, 22 against Montenegro, 28 against Manchester City and 32 against Genk. This shows a worrying carelessness that both Jurgen Klopp and Southgate need to consider.

Is the right-back starting to believe his own hype? Perhaps. There has been a lot of talk about how much the youngster is impressing. He has been compared to Belgium star Kevin de Bruyne, whilst there have been calls for him to appear in central midfield.

Before even considering that he needs to iron out these mistakes in his game. Does he have talent? Absolutely. Does he have a lot to learn? Undoubtedly. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves and encourage him to believe he is already the finished article.

West Ham fans criticise Roberto after another horror afternoon

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United fans have let out all of their frustration at goalkeeper Roberto after another error-strewn performance.

The Spanish stopper conceded three times as Tottenham Hotspur ran out 3-2 winners at the London Stadium on Saturday.

The first goal came from Son Heung-Min, who sent a powerful effort into the bottom corner, though it appeared to be close to the goalkeeper and within a saveable distance.

The second goal was Lucas Moura’s, as he slid in to meet Son’s cross and convert, while Roberto appeared to dive past Harry Kane’s header for the third.

The stopper, of course, is currently deputising for Lukasz Fabianski, the first-choice goalkeeper who is out until next year due to a torn hip muscle.

He has yet to keep a clean sheet in the league, though, and is also yet to be on the winning side; the Hammers have lost to Crystal Palace, Everton, Newcastle United, Burnley and now Spurs while he has been in goal, while also drawing with Bournemouth and Sheffield United.

And fans have used Saturday’s performance as a reason to unload their criticisms of the Spaniard.

Take a look at the best of the reaction below!

Crystal Palace: Steve Parish’s comments suggest he has learned some lessons

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has been chatting to The Evening Standard about his plans for the south London-based club, and his words are certainly full of hope, determination and vision.

Parish embarked on a three-year plan back in the summer, a blueprint that will hopefully see a new Main Stand be built at Selhurst Park, as well as a £20m revamp of the academy with the intention of securing category one status.

The 54-year-old certainly has big plans for the Eagles, and aims to make Palace a “shining beacon of positivity” around south London and something for the community to be proud of.

Additionally, one particular snippet from his comments suggests that he has learned some lessons during his time in the Premier League.

What did he say?

When speaking about the academy in particular, Parish said: “We know that the academy is such a powerful thing, in terms of what it means to everybody, but also financially it benefits the club.

“We’ve got to put the finances in place and, at the same time, make sure that we do well in the Premier League. We have to bring through more Wilfrieds [Zaha] and Aarons.

“If you get the process right, then success follows. If you set short-term goals, you’ll do short-term things. I think we’ve probably been guilty of that in the past.”

11-word extract suggests lessons are being learned

The final 11-word sentence of Parish’s comments, in which he says “I think we’ve probably been guilty of that in the past”, suggest the Eagles chief is learning from previous errors.

Since achieving promotion back in 2013, Palace have had seven permanent managers – averaging roughly one boss per each campaign.

Additionally, some of the playing staff that has been recruited since promotion has reeked of short-termism – there are only four players in the Palace squad under the age of 28, with one of them being the on-loan Victor Camarasa.

[ad_pod ]

To further emphasise the point of unsustainable, short-term recruitment, only two players have been moved on for significant fees in that seven-year period – Yannick Bolasie moved to Everton for £25m, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka went to Manchester United for £50m.

Fair play to Parish. It really has felt as if the south Londoners have been making it up as they’ve gone along since earning promotion, riding their luck while being bailed out by survival experts. However, the chairman’s comments suggest that he has learned from the error of his ways, and is actively trying to guide the club onto a new pathway.
