Leeds fans react to Marcelo Bielsa footage

Leeds United bolstered their chances of gaining promotion this campaign with a narrow victory on Saturday afternoon after they opened up a healthy gap to the playoff zone.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side defeated Reading 1-0 at Elland Road to move four points clear of third-placed Fulham, although league leaders West Brom still remain four points ahead.

Footage has since emerged of the Argentine’s actions prior to kick-off as he was seen interacting with the young members of the home crowd.

And fans have been loving it, here’s what has been said…

The overriding consensus was that his actions were of a “class” nature while one supporter couldn’t hold back his admiration for the 64-year-old as he claimed he loves the man.

Another fan believes Bielsa is a “true role model” and that he should be cherished rather than belittled by the press.

A further member of the Elland Road faithful even suggested that he has created a “culture of excellence” at the club and that it has been a real privilege to have him as manager of Leeds.

Plenty of others quickly noted how much they would miss him if he were to depart anytime soon…

The theme of Bielsa being a “class act” was once again mentioned with one fan stating just how lucky they are to have him in charge.

Sunderland’s Alim Ozturk wipes away a concern

When Bailey Wright suffered a season-ending injury last week there were huge concerns.

Not least from fans but also from Phil Parkinson who immediately entered the market to bring in Tommy Smith on a free transfer.

The Australian powerhouse had contributed to four clean sheets in just five matches after arriving from Bristol City on loan and he took to League One like a duck to water.

Given he’d previously succeeded in the Championship, it was a hardly a surprise.

How would Sunderland cope without the central defender though? There were various remedies Parkinson could have chosen, but his first one has already shown signs of paying off.

On Saturday, he brought Turkish defender Alim Ozturk back into the fray. The 27-year-old had been out of the side after Wright’s arrival but he showed few signs of rustiness against Bristol Rovers as Sunderland kept their superb defensive record intact.

Jon McLaughlin has now kept eight clean sheets in his last nine matches, a tally that stands at the best record in England throughout the top four divisions.

Wright was previously a large part of that but his replacement could now also become key as well.

6 foot 3 Ozturk was described as “flawless” by Parkinson after the clash and it was easy to see why.

He was a colossal influence in aerial situations, winning as many as four-headed battles during the game, via WhoScored.

This statistic in particular, proved vital in making up for Wright’s absence. Since playing for the Mackems, he’d won 2.4 aerial duels per game but that aspect certainly wasn’t lost in the backline last weekend.

Ozturk may only have managed one tackle but that was symbolic of the sweeper type role he was playing as part of the three-man defence. That allowed him to carry the ball forward and play countless long balls forward towards Charlie Wyke in attack.

Idiots Abroad: Do you know where these famous Brits are playing now?

The Turk registered as many as 12 while still maintaining a pass success rate of 79%. Given he rarely played the ball on the floor that was mightily impressive.

Missing Wright was a huge concern heading into the weekend but Ozturk has already battered away doubts that the Australian couldn’t be replaced. He more than stepped up to the plate.

Alasdair Gold gives his take on Mourinho slamming Ndombele

So Tanguy Ndombele’s difficult start to life in north London continues. The Frenchman has largely been on the periphery of things for Tottenham this season, with injuries and questions over his fitness really hampering his ability to settle down in English football. He has made just 26 appearances across all competitions, and hasn’t completed the full 90 minutes in the Premier League since December. And against Burnley on Saturday, he was hooked at half-time, with Jose Mourinho publicly slamming him after the game, saying that the midfielder has to “realise this is the Premier League”.

After hearing Mourinho’s comments, Football.London’s Tottenham correspondent, Alasdair Gold, gave his take on the situation.

It’s certainly an age-old method of working for Mourinho.

Calling out players in public who disappoint him during matches or training is nothing new for the Portuguese man. You only have to look at his incessant criticism of Luke Shaw whilst he was manager of Manchester United to see that.

Former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino certainly seems like a more friendly, and protective man-manager than Mourinho. Only time will tell whether the latter’s big call pays dividends when it comes to Ndombele.

Meanwhile, Tottenham swooping for Ryan Fraser could spell bad news for this player.

West Brom could benefit if 1960s protocol is copied

For a lot of people, this will be the first time football has been delayed in England in their lifetime.

However, if you ask your grandparents about the 1962/63 season, they’re likely to tell you the story of the big freeze, when football was called off for months due to arctic-like temperatures gripping the UK.

Football was endangered for three months, and such drastic measures were made such as Halifax’s Shay Stadium being turned into a public ice rink.

Eventually, the sport was resumed, but as you can imagine, that season didn’t quite pan out in the same way as every other campaign.

The powers that be decided that the season still had to be concluded by mid-May and this led to the most insane fixture congestion you could imagine.

For example, take a look at Liverpool’s fixtures in the back-end of that term.

The Reds played five games in eight days at one point in mid-April, and if that same protocol is followed this season it will have a huge effect on teams as fatigue and tiredness will set in.

One team that are nicely set up for this eventuality is West Bromwich Albion.

The Baggies have a big squad with a lot of depth, just look up front, their third choice striker was an £8m signing, while they also have four talented wingers, Kyle Edwards, Matheus Pereira, Callum Robinson and Grady Diangana who can easily be rotated.

Gareth Barry, Rekeem Harper and Chris Brunt provide good depth in the middle of the park, while this delay could allow Nathan Ferguson to return to fitness and provide more options at the back too where they have a plethora of central defenders in their ranks.

If the FA choose to copy the same protocol they used over 50 years ago, the Midlands club could be set up to go on and get promotion. Their strength in depth is pretty-much unmatched throughout this division, and that will be key from now until the end of the season.

In other news, West Brom may be impacted if the Championship runs until July.

Everton’s major problem under Ancelotti and Silva

After their difficult start to the season under Marco Silva, Everton had enjoyed a fairly impressive revival under Carlo Ancelotti until the world of football was put on hold.

The Toffees find themselves in 12th place in the Premier League, but have suffered just three defeats in the top-flight since Ancelotti’s appointment back in late December – even those were against Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea respectively.

But whilst the Italian’s arrival has heralded an upturn in form and results, the former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich boss has still yet to solve one of the Merseyside club’s major problem – their defending at set-pieces.

Watch Everton Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

As per Whoscored, Everton have conceded twelve goals from dead-ball situations – the joint-second worst of any team in the Premier League, with only newly-promoted Aston Villa letting in more with 14.

It points to a team that is still defensively disorganised, and has no real leaders taking charge of situations. It says a lot that even despite boasting physically imposing centre-backs like Yerry Mina (6 foot 4) and Michael Keane (6 foot 2), the Toffees remain one of the worst in the division at such a crucial part of the game.

Jordan Pickford may carry a lot of blame on his shoulders for his howlers this season, but conceding from set-pieces is something that should force people to look at both Silva and Ancelotti in particular.

What could’ve been… Can you name the clubs these football legends almost joined?

The manager of course is the one who decided whether to defend zonal or to man-mark, and so for them not to put in the required work on the training ground to ensure everything is absolutely perfect and secure, is a failure on their parts.

If Everton don’t buck up their ideas sooner rather than later, than all their hard work at the other end of the pitch (only eight sides have scored more than them), will just simply go to waste.

Meanwhile, Everton swooping for this La Liga star could add some power to their team.

Sheffield Wednesday can’t afford to waste Fletcher’s final years

Sheffield Wednesday are due to go through a period of transition.

For far too long now it’s been the same names lining up week in week out at Hillsborough, and while many won’t want to hear it, Carlos Carvalhal’s cohort of reliable stars are no longer what they used to be.

While many teams around them have adapted and evolved, the Owls have maintained the same core of players, but for many of them, the ship has sailed on their peak years.

The likes of Fernando Forestieri, Keiren Westwood, Kieran Lee and Adthe Nuhiu no longer look like players who can compete for a side challenging for the top six.

Watch Sheffield Wednesday Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Westwood has been frozen out, Forestieri has contributed to just three goals all season, Lee has dropped off in a number of metrics and Nuhiu has just three strikes to his name.

However, there are a couple of players from the Carvalhal era still producing the goods, and one of those is certainly Steven Fletcher.

The Scot is having arguably one of the best seasons of his career, he’s netted 13 goals, and he’s scoring at a rate of one every 155 minutes, a record capable of competing with the best of the best at this level.

Unfortunately, the former Sunderland man’s form can’t last forever.

He turned 33 this week, and he’s heading towards the back end of his career, but Wednesday have to make sure to not waste his final years by doing one thing.

Fletcher is a player worthy of playing for one of the division’s top sides, and those types of strikers don’t come around all that often in the Championship, but the rest of his team are letting him down.

Dejphon Chansiri and Garry Monk need to build a solid side around Fletcher to get the most out of arguably the most talented striker the Steel City outfit have seen this decade. Otherwise, his talents will be wasted, pointlessly finding the net for a team destined to languish in mid-table.

Wednesday must bring in the players to make sure Fletcher is able to lead the Owls towards a playoff push over the next couple of seasons, or else they’ll have let a huge opportunity pass them by.

In other news, this sale is one of Wednesday’s biggest mistakes ever.

Man Utd and Chelsea to battle it out for Jadon Sancho

According to reports from Mirror Football, Manchester United and Chelsea are set to battle it out for Jadon Sancho’s services this summer – with Liverpool not a factor in the race for his signature.

What’s the word?

Mirror Football claims Liverpool have no immediate interest in the England international, who has bagged 17 goals and 19 assists for Dortmund this season, leaving United and Chelsea as his only suitors from the Premier League.

Hilariously obscure Premier League players – Can you name them all?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

United have already been in contact with the 20-year-old’s agent, but the big stumbling block is the price-tag – Dortmund remain adamant that they want £100m for Sancho.

The Red Devils are also reluctant to make a formal offer, fearing how the ongoing lockdown of European football will affect the transfer market going forward.

Worth the money?

Top-quality right wingers these days are something of a rare commodity, with most elite attackers playing on the left to cut in on their stronger foot. Tellingly, Transfermarkt actually value Sancho as the third-most valuable one in the world, only surpassed by Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.

That in itself suggests Sancho is worth the investment to any potential suitor, Transfermarkt rating him at £117m, but for Man United his arrival could have particular significance.

Currently, there is no clear starter on the right of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s attack, with Dan James, Andreas Pereira, Mason Greenwood, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard all featuring there in the Premier League this season.

In that sense, Sancho could be the missing piece in Solskjaer’s jigsaw. Bruno Fernandes appears set to be United’s No.10 going forward, while Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have switched between centre-forward and left wing throughout the campaign. Adding the Dortmund star to the mix would essentially complete the front four, making it a rather formidable one at that.

Of course, the big question nobody can answer is how will the transfer market be affected by the current crisis, but certainly under normal circumstances £100m would seem like a fair price to pay for a young attacker already doing the business for a top European club.

Hopefully football’s postponement doesn’t drag on for too long, ensuring the spending power of top clubs like United isn’t shredded when the next transfer window comes around.

Meanwhile, the latest on Mason Greenwood has Man United fans fuming…

Wolverhampton Wanderers: Club should let Adama Traore join Liverpool amid transfer link

Wolverhampton Wanderers should let Adama Traore go to Liverpool after Football Insider reported that the Midlands-based club have named a price demand of at least £70 million, as the Reds come sniffing.

The outlet has also revealed that Liverpool are looking for a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane if they lose them, with Traore shortlisted as a candidate.

The 24-year old has scored six goals and provided 10 assists in 43 appearances in all competitions for the Wanderers this season, according to website.

One could argue that the winger has improved upon his performances this campaign, which is backed up by the stats, but the goal and assist return combined with the number of games he has played is simply not good enough to justify a £70 million price tag.

If Liverpool do come in with an offer, Nuno Espirito Santo could use the inflated figure to rebuild the squad in other areas, perhaps investing in another striker to ease the burden off of Raul Jimenez.

The Reds did something similar when they sold Philippe Coutinho to FC Barcelona for a whopping £142 million, signing the likes of Alisson to help fix a key position they were arguably lacking in. Since then, they have won the Champions League, with the Brazilian keeper incidentally voted man-of-the-match in the final.

If WWFC fans are worries that Traore will come back and haunt them, they must realise how difficult Salah or Mane would be to displace if they were still at the club, exemplified by the fact that they shared the golden boot last season alongside Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Spaniard has arguably added a cutting edge this campaign, but he will have to perform to a much higher standard if he is to justify the price quoted by Football Insider. But from Wolves’ perspective, the £70 million may prove handy in helping them add strength to their squad.

Wolves fans, would you sell Traore to Liverpool for £70 million? Comment below!

Ex-Manchester City stars team up to form Team Poseidon

As former teammates and Premier League winners, there are few Manchester City fans that would fail to recognise the contributions that both Shaun Wright-Phillips and Joleon Lescott have made to the Citizens’ recent history.

Whilst they have spent most of their career’s taking on full-backs, or in Lescott’s case keeping out the best-attacking talent that was on offer, they both now find themselves at the epicentre of a different challenge and one of virtual kind.

Lescott and Wright-Phillips have signed up for the NHS Charities Together Cup, where alongside ex-Bolton star, Fabrice Muamba, they will become a part of Team Poseidon in the FIFA 20 tournament.

What is the NHS Charities Together Cup?

A group of celebrities, including former-sports stars, comedians and actors, have signed up to compete in the NHS Charities Together Cup, which aims to raise £100m in support of the current Covid-19 crisis.

The FIFA 20 competition will involve eight all-celebrity teams, with three celebrities per team, going head-to-head in 12-minute long FIFA 20 matches. Fans will be given the chance to vote for who they want to see compete from every team in each round.

The competition’s organisers, Celebrity e-Sport, hope to raise a huge £100m for NHS charities together during these desperate times for all the care workers on the frontline, who are putting their own lives at risk to help save ours.
