Not Eze: Arsenal ready to pounce for "superstar" in Berta's best deal yet

It would be fair to say that some of the shine has been taken off Arsenal’s summer over the last seven days.

The atmosphere around the club was excellent going into the game against Tottenham Hotspur last Thursday, only for the team to fall to a dull 1-0 defeat.

Then, instead of wiping the slate clean with an entertaining win over Villarreal on Wednesday, Mikel Arteta’s side fell to yet another defeat.

Fortunately, it’s not all doom and gloom, as the club have made several brilliant signings so far, with the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and Martin Zubimendi the clear standouts.

Moreover, Andrea Berta looks ready to make yet more additions, with Eberechi Eze’s name refusing to go away, and reports suggesting he could pull off the signing of another international ace, someone who’d surely represent his best deal yet.

Berta targets a better signing than Eze

Despite already adding six players to the squad this summer, Arsenal are clearly on the hunt for more first-team additions, and Eze has been someone consistently touted for a move to the club this summer.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The Crystal Palace star has a £67.5m release clause in his current deal that expires on August 15th, and based on stories from the last week or so, it does seem like the Gunners will be making a move for him once that clause is gone.

However, in exciting news, the Englishman isn’t the only attacker Berta and Co are supposedly after, as it now looks like they’ve got their eye on someone who’d undoubtedly be his best signing of the window.

At least that’s according to a recent report from journalist Graeme Bailey, who has reaffirmed the fact that Arsenal are very interested in Rodrygo.

Bailey has revealed that, alongside North London rivals Spurs, the Gunners are now just “waiting for a signal” from the Brazilian before they make their move.

Interestingly, stories from earlier this summer made it clear that if the winger were to leave, it’d likely require a fee of around £86m, but then more recent reports have stated that a season-long loan with an obligation to buy at the end could be his route out of Spain.

It remains to be seen how Arsenal could eventually sign Rodrygo, but if they have any chance of doing so, they should, as he’d instantly become the best deal under Berta’s watch.

Why Rodrygo would be Berta's best deal

So, when it comes to the deals Berta has already completed this summer, the only two players who would be in with a shout of being his best are Gyokeres and Zubimendi, but we still think Rodrygo would land above both.

The reason he’d do so in the case of the Spaniard is the simple fact that the club do already have several genuinely great options for that role in the shape of Declan Rice, who was initially signed as a six, Christian Norgaard, who has impressed in pre-season, and Mikel Merino.

Moreover, it’s simply the nature of the sport that those who operate in deeper areas of the pitch are viewed as less game-changing than someone who’s up top, banging in goals or creating chances for his teammates.

However, in that case, why wouldn’t the former Sporting CP star be the better deal, as he racked up 67 goal involvements in 52 games last season?

Well, in this instance, it comes down to the fact that, while still outstanding, those numbers were achieved primarily in the Portuguese league, which, according to Opta Analyst, is just the eighth toughest in the world, coming in behind the Championship and Belgian top-flight.

Liverpool'sDarwinNunezreacts

While there is every chance that the Swedish international is a lean, mean goalscoring machine for the Gunners as well, there is still an element of the unknown about how he’ll adapt, especially when strikers like Darwin Núñez have struggled to do so in the past.

In contrast, we’ve got plenty of evidence that the Real Madrid star can more than handle himself in a top-five league.

For example, across the last two seasons, the Brazilian “superstar,” as dubbed by Luka Modrić, has found the back of the net on 31 occasions and provided 20 assists in 105 appearances, totalling 7159 minutes.

That means the former Santos gem has been averaging a goal involvement every 2.05 games, or every 140.37 minutes across the last two years, which is only made all the more impressive when you take into account the fact he had to play out of his preferred position on the left for most of those games.

Finally, like all top-tier players, the Osasco-born ace has an incredible record in the Champions League.

In his 64 appearances in the competition, totalling 3883 minutes, the 24-year-old has scored 25 goals and provided 14 assists, which comes out to a goal involvement every 1.64 games, or every 99.56 minutes.

Ultimately, when you take everything into account, from his record to the fact that there are plenty of other top sides looking to sign him, it’s easy to see why Rodrygo would represent Berta’s best deal since joining Arsenal.

'Just go all out': Rodrigues looks to Australian mindset

The India batter revealed her Brisbane Heat team-mates encouraged her to take a positive approach

Rodrigues welcomes ICC’s initiative to tackle social media abuse

India batter Jemimah Rodrigues is hoping to apply the Australian “mindset” she has picked up from her WBBL team-mates in her game.Rodrigues, who’s back in the tournament for her third stint having last played in 2022 for Melbourne Stars, has played four games so far for Brisbane Heat. She scored a 40-ball 61 in a match-winning effort against Adelaide Strikers after scores of 13 and 5 in the previous two games, crediting the turnaround to her Heat team-mates’ encouragement to play “positively”.Related

Lizelle Lee smashes WBBL records with 150 not out against Scorchers

“I think the last two innings of mine [in the WBBL] didn’t go that well,” Rodrigues said. “Grace Harris and Laura Harris both of them texted me and said, ‘Jemi, your over extra cover drive is the best. Don’t stop yourself from playing that. Even if you get out, it’s fine. But just keep dominating’. So I think that really helped me in [the Strikers] knock just to have that kind of backing firstly from your team that the team still believes in you and at the same time, just they’re like, ‘No, we’re still going to take the positive route. We’re still going to play positive cricket and bat with intent’.”So 100%, that mindset – just to learn from them [Australians]. There’s a saying always that if there are two options, always take the positive one. So I think that is something I have also been really working on in my game and just to have people around you after two failures, I had those doubts – ‘should I still play with this mindset or should I not?’. They were like ‘just go all out’ and that really helped me. This is something that I will take with me 100% hopefully bring it out with the Aussies and just continue to do well.”Rodrigues feels facing other international bowlers in leagues around the world is good for her confidence, especially with the ODI World Cup scheduled in less than a year.”Playing these foreign leagues and playing the WPL, it does help because you play against the best in the world in all these leagues and at the same time you get to play in different conditions,” she said. “Every ground is so different to the other and I think that is one of the best parts of playing franchise cricket that you get used to the conditions and you get to play the top bowlers in women ‘s cricket.Jemimah Rodrigues’ innings at the Gabba proved to be a match-winning one•Getty Images

“Imagine just going out there and doing well, how much confidence you’ll get coming back into the Indian team when you’ve taken on these bowlers. So I think it’s a good preparation leading into the World Cup. At the same time, it’s just good games because the more matches we play, the better we become. I think that’s the best part about having WBBL, the WPL, the Hundred, the Caribbean Premier League, all the leagues.”India started their preparation for the World Cup with three ODIs against New Zealand at home recently, which they won 2-1. Their next assignment is against Australia in December when they will play three ODIs in Brisbane and Perth. Rodrigues believes playing in the WBBL will be good preparation for the ODIs despite the format being different.”For me, nothing much changes in my technique,” Rodrigues said. “Nothing much will even change in my mindset. I think I will still back myself to play positive cricket, but at the same time being more sensible because it’s a longer format and trying to extend this innings even longer, scoring more and more runs for India. So I think that’s the similar mindset. Again, it’s about how I assess the conditions and assess the situation.”Recently, the ICC successfully trialled an AI tool to eliminate social media abuse in the women’s game. Rodrigues welcomed the move, saying she was glad the players don’t have to deal with it anymore and focus just on playing.”I think that was a very good initiative by the ICC. I remember when I had gone in that line because sometimes social media can be harsh. At the end we all are humans, we all are we here doing our best, trying to do whatever we can. Some ways we are great. Some ways we are not. So it’s just harsh when we see people just commenting all sorts of things on social media. But it was such a nice thing from ICC just to protect us and just to keep the game so pure. We [needed to] just go out there and play cricket and enjoy cricket than dealing with all these things. So it was, it was really nice from ICC.”

Nottingham Forest in talks to sign "outstanding" ace; same agent as Awoniyi

Nottingham Forest are in “talks” with an “outstanding” player over a move to the club in the summer transfer window, according to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg.

Nottingham Forest willing to spend big in midfield

The Reds continue to be linked with moves to the City Ground before the new Premier League season gets underway, with AC Milan midfielder Yunus Musah seen as an exciting option before the window slams shut.

Forest are reportedly willing to pay as much as £26m for the USA international, with the Midlands outfit also hoping that they can “close the deal quickly”, enhancing Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad depth in the middle of the park.

Away from the Reds’ pursuit of Musah, other exciting options are also being targeted, including Ipswich Town winger Omari Hutchinson. Forest are said to be in talks over a summer move for the Englishman, with a £35m bid tabled.

Juventus ace Douglas Luiz has been heavily linked to the Premier League side, while RB Salzburg’s Mads Bidstrup has been mentioned as an alternative to the Brazilian.

Nottingham Forest in "talks" to sign midfielder

Now, according to Plettenberg on X, “talks have taken place” between Salzburg and Nottingham Forest over the signing of Bidstrup this summer, and with the player himself, who is open to a new challenge.

This is another encouraging update regarding the Reds acquiring the midfielder’s signature, with the Dane looking increasingly like a leading option to move to the City Ground before deadline day ends.

Bidstrup has now racked up 84 appearances for Salzburg, not to mention representing Denmark across five different youth age groups, and analyst Chris Kearney has heaped praise on him.

Still only 24, Forest would get the best years of Bidstrup’s career out of him, with his peak still likely to come, and he can provide welcome competition in midfield, as well as being compared in style to Luiz by FBref.

Ian Botham has been elected as honorary president of Durham, after completing a seven-year term as the club chair, with Phil Collins, his vice-chair, stepping into the role with immediate effect.Botham, who was appointed in 2017 having played for Durham in the club’s maiden seasons as a first-class county in 1992 and 1993, attracted controversy last year for his scathing response to the report into cricket’s racism crisis by the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC), which he described as “nonsense” and claimed he “threw down on the floor”.In response, ICEC chair Cindy Butts told MPs at a Culture, Media and Sport select committee hearing in February that the ECB lacked “a moral backbone” in failing to distance itself from Botham’s comments, adding that Botham himself had been asked to give evidence to the inquiry, but had not responded.Speaking after the end of Botham’s Durham tenure was confirmed, ECB Chair Richard Thompson said: “Over 50 years, Lord Botham has made a huge contribution to English cricket and in particular to Durham, first as a player before returning as chair in 2017 at a very challenging time for the club.”Collins, who became vice-chair and a director of Durham in 2017, enters the role with over 35 years’ of commercial and marketing experience in various industries, along with a lifelong passion for cricket. He takes over with Durham restored to the top flight of the County Championship, having been relegated back in 2016 as punishment for a financial crisis that required the ECB to bail them out.Botham took over as chair soon afterwards, and said in a press release from the club: “I am delighted with what has been achieved at the Club during my tenure both on and off the field.”Our men’s team have performed superbly in recent times and this was evident with our promotion to Division One and our performances last year in the topflight.”Our successful Tier 1 bid is huge for the region and we are absolutely delighted to bring professional women’s sport to the region.”It’s a huge endorsement of the pathway we already have at Durham and the potential of the region and our squad and coaching staff is coming together very nicely.”I look forward to working with Phil to achieve our goals and build on our successes, as I wish him all the best as our new Club Chair.”Collins added: “I’m delighted to have taken on the role of chair in what is a very exciting time for Durham Cricket. Lord Ian and the board has laid strong foundations for many years and I am looking forward to building on the work which has been achieved.”The response to my election has been magnificent and everyone has been very supportive. “I can’t wait for the season to start and for our men’s and women’s teams to get competing on the field, while we work on some exciting projects off it too.”

Kudus repeat: Spurs make very good offer to sign "incredible" England star

Tottenham Hotspur fans haven’t been the happiest with Daniel Levy in recent years, amid constant frustration with his lack of spending within the transfer market.

Whilst the owner has spent over £700m on new additions since the opening of the new stadium in 2020, many of which have failed to cut the grade needed in the Premier League.

The investment is one thing, but key players have also been offloaded during such a time period, including record goalscorer Harry Kane – who departed in a £82m deal to join Bayern Munich in 2023.

After the Lilywhites only ended the previous campaign in 17th place, more signings are desperately needed in the next couple of weeks, before the transfer window slams shut on September 1st.

Numerous players remain in their sights at present, with many of whom improving the options currently at Thomas Frank’s disposal as he attempts to build on their Europa League triumph.

Spurs preparing move for Premier League star

Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze has been the biggest name mentioned with a move to join Spurs this summer, with the player himself keen on a deal to join the Lilywhites.

The two clubs have been in constant discussions over a move for the 27-year-old, who could cost a fee in the region of £60m, with Arsenal also interested in his signature.

However, he’s not the only Eagles talent currently in their sights, with centre-back Marc Guehi also a player the hierarchy are making a move for, according to TEAMtalk.

Their report claims that Frank’s side have made an offer to the player personally, which has been described as ‘very, very good’, with Liverpool also firmly in the race for his signature.

It also states that Guehi, who has one year left on his deal at Selhurst Park, could be available for a fee in the region of £45m – which may prove to be too expensive for any interested party.

Why Spurs’ latest target would be a Kudus-esque signing

Mohammed Kudus remains Spurs’ biggest addition throughout this summer, costing a staggering £55m from rivals West Ham United back in the early weeks of July.

The Ghanaian was brought into the club to provide needed quality to the attacking department, something which he’s already done as seen by his two competitive outings for the Lilywhites.

The 24-year-old started in a number nine role against PSG for the UEFA Super Cup final, before shifting to a more familiar right-sided role against newly-promoted Burnley.

He managed to register two assists for Richarlison, including his superb acrobatic effort in the second half, ending his first league outing for Frank’s side emerged as 3-0 victors over Scott Parker’s men.

It’s early days for the former Ajax star, but he’s already demonstrated his quality in North London, with a move for Guehi potentially being a similar deal this summer.

Whilst the two operate in different positions, the comparison is evident between the pair, in both joining the Lilywhites from sides, also in the Premier League.

Crystal Palace'sMarcGuehilooks dejected.

Both have proven their quality in England’s top-flight, as seen by Kudus’ league debut, but Guehi’s underlying stats are just as impressive – enabling him to make a huge impact on the side throughout 2025/26 and beyond.

The Englishman, who’s been labelled “incredible” by creator HLTCO, completed 84% of the passes he attempted, 3.9 of which per 90 were progressive – able to provide Kudus with added chances in the final third, despite his defensive role.

Out of possession, the Palace star was just as impressive, winning 1.8 tackles per 90, at a success rate of 66%, able to add further quality to the Lilywhites’ already potent backline.

His talent without the ball is further reflected in his tally of 1.6 blocks made and 4.8 clearances made per 90 last season, able to help Frank in his quest to improve the defensive record that saw the side concede 65 times in their 38 outings in 2024/25.

Given the interest from the defending champions, it’s unclear whether Guehi will want to move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before the September 1st deadline.

However, any deal would be a phenomenal piece of business, allowing the centre-back to follow in Kudus’ footsteps and aid the club’s chances of building on their recent European triumph.

As mudanças chamaram atenção desde a primeira rodada.

– disse.
