It was slow going with the bat in Wollongong while South Australia managed one breakthrough

Kurtis Patterson edged past Don Bradman in the New South Wales record books after making it to stumps on day one of the weather-affected Sheffield Shield match against South Australia in Wollongong.Rain stopped play for almost three-and-a-half hours in the middle of the day, before bad light forced another stoppage only seven overs after the resumption.”The game’s probably sitting pretty fifty-fifty at the moment,” South Australia spinner Ben Manenti said. “They haven’t gotten away from us but they haven’t lost many wickets.”Soon before the lunch break, Patterson surpassed Bradman to become the 19th-highest run-scorer for NSW in Sheffield Shield history. The 29-year-old Patterson now has 4656 runs for NSW, while Bradman made 4633.Only Moises Henriques (14th) sits higher than Patterson amongst the current crop. Bradman averaged 107.74 from his 31 Shield matches for NSW before his move to South Australia in 1934, while Patterson is averaging 37.07 from 76 appearances. The majority of play at North Dalton Park took place in the morning session, which failed to reach any great heights.Hughes was dropped by Nathan McAndrew at short leg early in his innings, while Manenti secured the only breakthrough of the session when he dismissed Blake Nikitaras for 32. Nikitaras departed when he chipped Manenti to mid-on, where he was caught by Jordan Buckingham.”It was like he was batting on a different surface from me,” Hughes said. “It’s quite a slow wicket but it’s quite flat and the outfield’s slow. There’s going to be a bit of grinding to do but hopefully we can do that tomorrow.”NSW and South Australia are in the bottom two spots on the Shield ladder with a draw and a loss to their names.
Australia do not have any T20s on their schedule until next August

Glenn Maxwell: Every time we were one wicket too many down to go hard
Aaron Finch won’t rush into a decision over his international future following Australia’s exit from the T20 World Cup, instead giving himself a chance to see how this season’s BBL goes.Having retired from ODIs in September, there are no international commitments for Finch until next August when Australia have T20s in South Africa. The next T20 World Cup is in West Indies and the USA in mid-2024 when Finch will be 37.”No, I’m not going to retire. Not just yet,” Finch told as he arrived back at Melbourne airport on Sunday. “I’ll play Big Bash and see where we sit after that, but I’m still enjoying playing cricket, playing T20.”It still feels unlikely that Finch will pad up again for Australia and if that’s the case he will finish with 3120 T20I runs at 34.28 and a strike-rate of 142.53 including a top score 172. He continued to struggle for form at the World Cup with a painful innings against Sri Lanka, but rebounded somewhat with 63 off 44 balls against Ireland in what may have been his last international innings after a hamstring injury keeping him out of the Afghanistan game.Related

“There’s not another international T20 until August, so there’s quite a long break,” he said. “Still plenty of time to be able to weigh all that up. It’s been a pretty good ride regardless of what happens.”Finch’s BBL season with Melbourne Renegades will start on December 15 against Brisbane Heat.Speaking earlier in the day, head coach Andrew McDonald did not preempt any decision from Finch but noted that once conversations about retirement start that’s often the way they play out.”Any time that you, I suppose, start to think about it then the end will be one day closer, there’s no doubt about that,” he said. “I think the Big Bash will probably determine his future – how he goes there, his performances, how his body is holding up.Is it the end? “His body has failed him here in terms of a hamstring strain that put him out of the World Cup…the next game is not until August next year so that gives him a lot of time to repair if he is willing to go on.”If not, then I am sure that over the next couple of weeks he will have a think about that and call it a little bit similarly to what he did in the one-day international scene.”McDonald, who took over as head coach from Justin Langer earlier this year, offered no excuses for Australia’s Super 12s exit of their home tournament.”We have only got ourselves to really blame,” he said, while forecasting personnel changes ahead of the next T20 World Cup. “We will go through what that looks like in terms of building towards the next World Cup”There will be some natural turnover because of the gap and space and also the age profile of the team. So there will be some people that get some opportunities, albeit next August when we play T20 again.”Australia’s next international action is a three-match ODI series against England which starts four days after the World Cup final. McDonald hinted that the early end to their tournament could mean a stronger-than-expected squad will be named. Pat Cummins was announced as the new ODI captain last month although he is not expected to feature in every series.
West Ham made around £142m worth of sales in the 2023/24 season, which has since gone on to fund multiple big spending windows for the Hammers as they look to transform their identity to a more possession-based side and establish themselves in European places each season.
Of course, their biggest loss was Declan Rice, who joined Arsenal for around £100m in the summer 2023 window, after making 245 appearances for the club, scoring 15 goals, providing 13 assists and totalling 20,580 minutes in his time at the club.

The departure of Rice is still causing issues for West Ham at present, with their midfield struggling to strike balance, firstly under Julen Lopetegui, but now also under new head coach, Graham Potter.
West Ham's midfield issues since Rice's departure
Since Rice left the club, West Ham have tried to replace him with multiple midfield signings, bringing Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse in during the 2023/24 season, before adding Guido Rodriguez and Carlos Soler in the 2024/25 season.
None of these signings have replaced the key attributes that Rice brought to the squad, with his raw athleticism, ability to cover ground and contest in duels, as well as carry the ball forwards when breaking from deep, getting West Ham up the pitch at speed.
Alvarez has proven to walk a disciplinary tightrope on too many occasions, Rodriguez has been more notable for similar and Ward-Prowse spent the first half of 2024/25 out on loan.
But, perhaps the best Rice replacement was right there all along, being sent out on loan during the 2023/24 season by West Ham, before being sold last summer, joining Southampton for a fee of around £18m.
West Ham may have sold a Rice replacement
Flynn Downes was sold after managing just 35 appearances for the West Ham first-team, with the majority of his time being spent out on loan after joining West Ham from Ipswich in 2022.
Where Are They Now
Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.
Rice leaving in 2023 could have been the best time to fast-track Downes’s minutes, giving him a more important role in the team.
Many of the traits mentioned earlier which were lost with Rice, including an ability to progress play, athleticism to defend in transition and protect the defence, as well as mobility and an engine to get around the pitch and contribute to all phases, could have been addressed with Downes.
Flynn Downes for West Ham
Since moving permanently, he has made 20 appearances for Southampton this season, scoring once, contributing to two clean sheets and totalling 1,536 minutes.
In his time at Swansea, Russell Martin (who signed Downes from West Ham for Southampton) described the English midfielder as “incredible”, praising his work-rate, athleticism, creative ability and his ability to enable others to perform their roles.
This isn’t to say he was the sole answer to replacing Rice, but given the circumstances, it would have been a good idea to implement Downes alongside a new signing, in order to provide the team with balance, not completely stripping the team of its central mobility.

Chelsea are now preparing a £75m bid for an “incredible” Premier League star, and they may also look at using one of their own players as a makeweight in negotiations, according to a report.
Blues pursuing a defender
Ahead of the summer transfer window, one of the Blues’ main priorities appears to be bringing in some new defenders, having been linked with moves for a number of top centre-backs.
Barcelona’s Jules Kounde is one of the most high-profile centre-backs thought to be on the shortlist, with Enzo Maresca’s side willing to push the boat out to get a deal done.
However, there are also some options from much closer to home, with it recently being revealed the west Londoners are the favourites to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, despite interest from European heavyweights Bayern Munich.
Crystal Palace's MarcGuehicelebrates after the match
There has now been a new update on Chelsea’s pursuit of Guehi, with a report from Spain revealing they are now preparing a bid of around £75m for the summer.
The Palace defender is described as one of the Blues’ main targets, having caught the eye of Maresca, and they are now willing to make a huge bid to get a deal done, after making attempts to sign him during the winter.
Not only are Maresca’s side willing to make a £75m offer plus bonuses, but they are also considering whether to use a player as a makeweight in the negotiations in order to sweeten the deal.
The report does not state which player could be offered to the Eagles, but the willingness to send someone in the opposite direction is said to underline Chelsea’s desire to get a deal done as quickly as possible.
Chelsea preparing £25m offer for "brilliant" forward who may replace Nkunku
The Blues are keen to bolster their attacking options this summer.
ByDominic Lund Feb 23, 2025 Trevoh Chalobah swap deal could make sense
Maresca was forced to recall Trevoh Chalobah from his loan spell at Selhurst Park last month, with the manage lacking options in defence due to the injury sustained by Wesley Fofana.
Chalobah was a key player for the Eagles prior to his loan being cut short, and Oliver Glasner described him as a “very good player”, so it could make sense to use the centre-back in negotiations for Guehi.
Lauded as “incredible” by members of the media, the England international has certainly earned a big move with his performances for Palace, once again playing a big part in his side picking up a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory against Fulham at the weekend.
The 24-year-old made three interceptions, three tackles and blocked one shot to keep the Cottagers at bay, while also showcasing his leadership by captaining the side.
That said, £75m seems a large fee for a player who will be out of contract next summer, so it would make sense for Chelsea to try and engineer a swap deal, and there is seemingly a good chance Palace would be keen on Chalobah, given the praise from Glasner.
The Australia teenager has heaped praise on the India batter for the insights she shared during their time together in the WBBL

Australia’s uncapped teenaged batter Phoebe Litchfield has heaped praise on India opener Smriti Mandhana for sharing insights during the Women’s Big Bash League last year and termed her one of her “favourite left-handers to watch.”Mandhana led the charts for for Sydney Thunder in WBBL 2021-22 with 377 runs at a strike rate of 130.44. Litchfield, who became the youngest batter to hit a WBBL half-century in 2019, was next on the list with 263 at a strike rate of 109.12. While Mandhana opted out of the WBBL this season, Litchfield was Thunder’s top run-getter with 280 at a rate of 117.64, with two half-centuries. Those runs contributed to a call-up to the Australia side that is now in India for a five-match T20I series.Related

“Smriti was awesome to play with. She is a class above,” the 19-year-old Litchfield said in Mumbai on Wednesday. “As a lefty I learnt a lot off her. She helped me through those innings. I definitely made the most of her [time] over there [and] picked her brains. She’s one of my favourite left-handers to watch.”She actually gave me one of her bats at the end of the series. I used that and it was a peach! [The chat with her was about] just batting insights around how to go about a game. Sometimes you shank some, sometimes you go well. You’ve got to stick in there and put an innings together. She helped me with that.”Litchfield has been regarded as a bright prospect ever since her WBBL debut. She stroked her maiden List A century this season for New South Wales Breakers in the Women’s National Cricket League, underlining her next-big-thing status in Australian cricket. While the tag sits comfortably on her, she admitted to the occasional pressure that it brings.”I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t cross my mind,” she said. “The pressures of scoring runs always plays on the mind, especially as a young player. With the media going ‘oh, you are the next big thing’ and I hope like I don’t go nowhere or something like that. But as soon as I hop on the field it disappears, which is nice.”I focus on scoring runs and actually having fun around the group and seeing players like Rach [Rachael] Haynes, Alyssa Healy play and mirror my game to the T and have fun.”Litchfield is looked at as a like-for-like replacement for Haynes, who retired from professional cricket this season. Having had her first practice session in India on Tuesday, Litchfield, who’s into her first full season as a full-time cricketer – and not having to juggle the sport with school – said she was still getting to grips with subcontinental surfaces.”I am like-for-like for Rach – as in a top-order, middle-order batter, lefty and a fielder,” she said about her possible role. “I guess that’s the spot that is free in the Aussie set-up. But I am not looking for anything at the moment and just relishing the time in the group.”It wasn’t the greatest hit on these spinny, slow wickets but it’s my first hit in the subcontinent. It is not going to be perfect but yeah, it was lots of fun batting with Midge [Healy], who was smacking it down at the other end while I was struggling to get off the mark.”
