Liverpool plot move for £50m Nunez replacement who shoots more than Salah

So, the track that FSG have chosen this winter is one that we all know and love: Liverpool are opportunistic in the transfer window, and will only act if that perfect prospect presents itself.

This might be frustrating for those of an Anfield persuasion, but there’s a reason why Liverpool have stayed ahead of the curve for the best part of a decade, probably behind only Manchester City and Real Madrid on the grand European scale.

It might not feel like it at times, but you can bet your bottom dollar that Liverpool chiefs aren’t just twiddling thumbs and spinning around ergonomic chairs, with plenty simmering behind the scenes as Arne Slot’s side chase down the Premier League title.

Liverpool managerArneSlot

We all want a shiny new signing to insinuate themself into the core of Liverpool’s first team, but sporting director Richard Hughes is currently embroiled in a fight to tie down the ‘big three’ to new contracts.

Moreover, Darwin Nunez’s future is up in the air. The likeable Uruguayan, sadly, might be moving on.

The latest on Darwin Nunez's future at Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp personally advocated Nunez’s signing after he scored 34 goals from 41 matches for Benfica in 2021/22, bagging twice against Liverpool in the Champions League.

Liverpool broke their transfer record to bring him in on a £85m deal, but it hasn’t gone to plan. For all his energy and spirit, the maverick has never managed to shake the wastefulness that has marred his career on English shores, having missed 50 big chances across 80 Premier League fixtures, as per Sofascore, and scoring only 22 times.

The word on the street is that Michael Edwards has reportedly rejected a £70m verbal proposal from Al Hilal for the 25-year-old, with FSG holding out for their £85m asking price. Some might find that ludicrous – Nunez, after all, has only scored four goals from 26 matches this term – but let’s see how it pans out.

It almost feels like Nunez has regressed under Slot’s wing, that he’s lost some of his chaotic energy and been minimised into something more simplistic. It’s not working for him.

The highly-charged number nine is a fan favourite and rightly so, but Slot carries himself with a business-like ruthlessness and that is one of the defining factors behind Liverpool’s success.

Liverpool lining up exciting Nunez replacement

If Nunez does leave this month, Liverpool would be wise to secure an instant replacement. Jayden Danns, 18, is a wonderful prospect but it would be negligible to heap such a burden on his shoulders.

As such, there might be some truth in The Northern Echo’s recent report that Liverpool have identified Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo as a possible signing this month, though he is valued at £50m.

However, FSG are drawn to the idea of offering the £30m-rated Ben Doak as a makeweight, allowing them to welcome Semenyo to the fold in an affordable fashion.

The 25-year-old has been a standout figure at the Vitality Stadium this season and is also on Newcastle United’s radar. He could be the dynamic and versatile forward that the Reds need to push over the line in their title charge.

What Antoine Semenyo would bring to Liverpool

Bournemouth signed Semenyo from Bristol City for a £10.5 fee in January 2023, convinced by the electric winger’s performances in the Championship.

He sat on the fringes initially but went from strength to strength when Andoni Iraola replaced Gary O’Neil in the dugout, bagging eight Premier League goals last season and raising his game once more this term.

With six goals and three assists across 21 outings for the Cherries in 2024/25, Semenyo has the talent and the potency to make a difference in Liverpool’s squad, with his underlying data suggesting that he could actually prove to be an upgrade on Nunez.

You can see that Semenyo brings more to the table than Nunez, whose foibles have devolved into something damning. When Liverpool scouts weigh him up against Semenyo, who has been described as being “almost unplayable on his day” by reporter Ed Aarons, it’s clear that he’s in trouble.

Bournemouth’s dynamo, you see, likes to bring fire to his attacking efforts, peppering the goal with an obscene number of shots. His 4.1 strikes per game, in fact, are even more than Mohamed Salah’s 3.9 per game, so if Slot can increase his clinical edge, Liverpool might have a dangerous weapon indeed.

Analyst Ben Mattinson claimed that Semenyo would be the “perfect January signing” when discussing Arsenal’s interest, so why shouldn’t Liverpool push to sign him – especially with the Gunners in desperate need of fresh firepower?

Semenyo is simply operating at a higher level than his age-mate Nunez, and if Saudi suitors are willing to pay a big sum to take him off Liverpool’s hands, it seems like something of a no-brainer.

After all, Liverpool have skyrocketed into the ascendency under their Dutch coach’s management this term and must continue to lay down a steely framework to ensure that the mountain is crested and many more down the line.

Nottingham Forest now activate £50m+ clause to sign new forward for Nuno

Nottingham Forest have triggered the release clause of a new exciting forward for Nuno Espírito Santo as they look to continue their strong Premier League campaign, according to an astonishing new report.

Can Forest lift the Premier League title?

After holding current Premier League leaders Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at the City Ground in midweek, Forest followed that result up with a 3-2 win over Southampton to maintain their strong form in England’s top tier.

Having narrowly avoided relegation last season, the Garibaldi now sit just six points off the top of the Premier League (albeit having played a game more than Liverpool) and are six points clear of Manchester City in fourth.

The form of Chris Wood has spearheaded their charge up the table, with the New Zealand international scoring his 14th goal of the season against the Saints to help them to their seventh win in their last eight games, form that has them in the mix for a shock Premier League title charge.

Neco Williams and Chris Wood

Speaking after the game, Elliot Anderson admitted that the City Ground side were just as concerned about the sides below them though, as they look to at least cement a spot in Europe for next season.

“We started really bright but made it hard for ourselves in the second half. Ultimately we got the three points and I’m really happy,” he explained.

“The manager said it’s always hard when you’ve got something to lose. We needed those three points because there are teams creeping up behind us.”

The club are expected to be active in January, with reports linking forward Taiwo Awoniyi with a move away from the City Ground and the club having already made clear their desire for a new striker last summer.

Now, a shock report has tipped Forest to splash the cash this winter in a bid to cement their newfound place among the Premier League elite.

Forest "trigger" £50m release clause

That is according to a report in Spain, which has claimed that Forest are one of three sides who have triggered the €60m (£50.7m) release clause in Villarreal star Alex Baena’s contract ahead of the second half of the January transfer window.

The Spaniard has long been linked with a move away from the Yellow Submarine, having cemented his reputation as one of the best creators in LaLiga. He is enjoying another fine season in Spain’s top flight, with the 23-year-old having managed four goals and five assists in 17 outings, while the “sublime playmaker” leads the division for expected assists, chances created and shot creating actions.

As per the report, all of Forest, Newcastle United and Bayern Munich have activated the player’s release clause this month in a bid to secure his services in the coming weeks, while Forest have “decided to go all out” on the Spaniard to try and complete the deal.

In truth, the report feels at the very least premature, with Forest and Newcastle in particular both under financial fair play scrutiny and unlikely to invest so heavily in one player this month, while a trio of clubs activating his release clause also seems far-fetched.

However, if Forest are indeed keen on signing Baena, then they will be getting one of the best creative forces in Europe as they look to make history this season.

Amorim wants Man Utd to sign "talented" Premier League star to replace Shaw

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim wants to bring an “extremely talented” Premier League star to Old Trafford to fix his biggest problem position, according to a new report.

Manchester United news and updates

They may have made it look difficult, but United finally returned to winning ways in the Premier League on Thursday night after a month without a victory, coming from behind to beat bottom side Southampton 3-1 at Old Trafford courtesy of a sensational hat-trick from Amad Diallo.

The Saints were much the better side in the first half, with winger Kamaldeen Sulemana in particular proving too much for young Leny Yoro to handle, and took the lead just before halftime when Manuel Ugarte turned the ball into his own net.

Southampton and Sulemana again looked threatening after the break, but, as so often has been the case this season, were unable to convert their chances. Diallo, United’s best player this season, then made them pay, netting three goals in the last 12 minutes to seal all three points for the Red Devils and write himself into the Old Trafford history books.

“[It is] maybe one of the best weeks in my life,” Diallo, who last week signed a new five-and-a-half-year-contract at United, said after the game. “We believed until the end and are happy to win.”

Amorim, meanwhile, said: “He is having a very good season. Congratulations to him. I hope he enjoys tonight because he needs to appreciate these moments. But we have to be careful with young kids. This game is in the past.”

Amorim wants Ait-Nouri to fix left-back problem

While Amad may be producing the goods for Amorim, the Portuguese boss still has issues to address all over the pitch.

Amorim’s most notable problem position is at left-back. Luke Shaw is injured again, while Tyrell Malacia, who missed all of last season following knee surgery, has failed to impress since his return. Summer signing Noussair Mazraoui, meanwhile, has been solid, but looks far more at home on the right flank.

According to a new report from CaughtOffside, to fix the problem, Amorim is keen to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri. The former Sporting boss reportedly wants the Algeria international to be his new first choice left-back instead of Shaw, and could facilitate a move for him through the sale of Malacia, who is attracting interest from Italian giants Juventus.

Wolves player Rayan Ait-Nouri

Ait-Nouri has been one of Wolves’ best players this season, scoring three goals and laying on five assists for his teammates in 20 Premier League games. Speaking about the 23-year-old last year, former Wolves boss Gary O’Neil heaped praise on the defender, describing him as “extremely talented”.

“He can play anywhere on the pitch with the quality that he has and we’re working with him at the moment on his decision-making because he’s unbelievably brave,” O’Neil said, according to the Express & Star.

Premier League legend Dion Dublin, meanwhile, also said of Ait-Nouri last season: “What a player. I think he’s one of those players Wolves fans will be thinking, ‘Don’t play too well!’, because they might not have him next season.”

'He could actually win you a World Cup' – Ricky Ponting pushes Tim David's case

Ponting compared David’s match-winning power-hitting ability with former teammate Andrew Symonds

Alex Malcolm24-Jul-2022

Tim David sends one high•Robert Cianflone/Getty Images

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes Tim David is the type of player that could win Australia the T20 World Cup, comparing his match-winning ability to that of 2003 50-over World Cup star Andrew Symonds.Ponting, who has recently taken a role as Hobart Hurricanes head of strategy where David plays in the BBL, suggested that if he was an Australia selector he would find a place for the powerful right-hander in Australia’s side despite the fact the 2022 T20 World Cup hosts are defending a title they won without David in the squad last year.He compared David’s power-hitting to that of his late friend Symonds, who was a last-minute inclusion in Australia’s 2003 World Cup squad and dominated scoring a brilliant 143 not out in the opening game against Pakistan and another match-winning 91 not out in the semi-final against Sri Lanka.”If I was a selector, I would love to have someone like that in my team,” Ponting said. “If he’s playing or not, just to have that sort of striking power ability around, he’s an out and out match-winner.Related

Australia challenged to 'find a way' to fit Tim David into the T20I side

Tim David looms large in Australia's plans despite Sri Lanka absence

Langer looks at 'other opportunities' despite Ponting's pursuit for Hurricanes job

“He’s the sort of player that could actually win you a World Cup. He’s not just the average run-of-the-mill guy that might just sneak into a squad. I mean, he actually reminds me a bit of someone like an Andrew Symonds back in the 2003 World Cup. You know if you get them in and you give him an opportunity they’re a chance of winning a tournament for you. That’s how I’d be looking at him right now. I know there are some other great world-quality players in the middle order for Australia. But probably none of them boasts the resume as good as Tim’s over the last two years.”Australia’s selection panel, which features George Bailey (chairman), Andrew McDonald (coach) and Tony Dodemaide, have a challenge on their hands trying to fit David into the 15-man squad. They did not pick him for the T20I tour of Sri Lanka as the squad was selected just prior to his outstanding run of form in the IPL. Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade have established themselves as Australia’s finishers at No.6 and No.7 following their World Cup heroics last year. The top four is also settled. The only vulnerable player in that line-up appears to be Steven Smith who has been backed in at No.5 in Australia’s T20I team with the selectors holding faith that the veteran will stand up when required in the T20 World Cup.Skipper Aaron Finch suggested recently that David’s opportunity with Australia will come. Australia’s next T20I assignment is a three-game series against India in India in September. It is possible David could be part of that squad if a couple of Australia’s multi-format batters are rested given the matches will be in vastly different conditions to those that will be seen in the World Cup. But those games are likely to be played after the 15-man World Cup squad has already been named.Tim David hits one straight during his 11-ball 34•BCCI

Ponting saw David in the IPL at close quarters when he smacked 34 off 11 balls for Mumbai Indians against the Ponting-coached Delhi Capitals to knock Delhi out of the playoffs.Ponting felt David was underutilised by Mumbai and is already planning to use him more prominently for Hobart Hurricanes following discussions with new coach Jeff Vaughan.”He’s been incredible in almost every tournament that he’s played around the world, the last 12 or 18 months,” Ponting said. “He was probably a little bit unlucky not to play more in the IPL this year to be honest, with the way that he started with Mumbai and then didn’t come back until right near the end and played some match-winning knocks then.”He’s obviously one player that we’re extremely excited about. I think there’s a chance for him to probably take on a bit more responsibility in the batting line-up with the Hurricanes this season as well because of his consistency and his match-winning ability. We don’t want to waste that and we don’t have him sitting on the sidelines too long. So I know that’s one of the strategic things that we’ve already spoken about with him, is how we actually get the most out of him and how we maximize his ability.”He’s a very, very good, very dangerous T20 player that I’m sure the Australian selectors are thinking long and hard about for the World Cup in a couple of months time.”
