Former Australia wicketkeeper Rod Marsh is in a Queensland hospital after suffering a serious heart attack.Marsh, 74, was in Bundaberg for an event for the Bulls Masters charity group. He was reportedly rushed to hospital by Bulls Masters organisers John Glanville and David Hillier.”John and Dave deserve so much credit because the doctor said if they had waited for an ambulance he would not have made it,” Bulls Masters boss Jimmy Maher told .”Rod landed at 10.05am and rang me from the car at about 10.30. He said he could not wait to have a beer with me. Then soon [after] Dave rang me from the car and told me what had happened. It’s devastating.”Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley said: “We are very concerned to hear the news about Rod and send him all our best wishes. Our thoughts are with him, his wife Ros and their family and many friends at this difficult time. Rod is one of the most iconic and popular figures in the game and we thank and acknowledge those who are looking after him.”The Australian Cricketers’ Association said: “The thoughts of everyone within cricket are with the family and many friends of Rod Marsh who is in a critical condition in hospital after suffering a heart attack this morning. Rod is an influential figure in Australian cricket and has been so for more than 50 years.”He was in Bundaberg as part of the Queensland Bulls Masters event and is currently surrounded by some of his former team-mates. He will soon be joined by his family who are making their way to Bundaberg.”Marsh played 96 Tests for Australia between 1970 and 1984, snaring 355 dismissals behind the stumps. He also previously served as Australia’s men’s chairman of selectors before stepping down in 2016.

Katherine Brunt says pressure will be on New Zealand in crucial World Cup encounter

Hosts facing elimination if they cannot arrest slump in form, as group-stage hots up

Katherine Brunt believes that the pressure will be ramped up on the tournament hosts New Zealand in Sunday’s crucial group-stage encounter at Eden Park, as they take on England in what is effectively a knock-out contest in an extraordinarily tight race for the Women’s World Cup semi-final berths.England, the defending champions, made a disastrous start to their campaign with a trio of narrow defeats against Australia, West Indies and South Africa in their opening three games. However, they ended a run of six consecutive ODI losses by beating India by four wickets in their last outing, and it is now New Zealand who are encountering a slump in form following back-to-back losses to the tournament’s two unbeaten teams, Australia and South Africa.Failure to reach the semi-finals would be a desperate disappointment for Sophie Devine’s team, who can expect a strong home support in Auckland, but whose hopes of qualification would be all but over if they slumped to their fourth loss of the group stages.Looking back on England’s own experiences of hosting the World Cup in 2017, Brunt recalled how their opening-match defeat against India in Derby had served as a “wake-up call”, meaning that they never sailed quite so close to elimination in the first round.”We didn’t experience that ourselves in 2017 because we had that wake-up call very early on,” Brunt said. “So we got ourselves right pretty early and then won every game thereafter. So we didn’t have that nervousness of everything being a knockout.”So, I would say that would definitely add some tension, especially with it being at Eden Park, and I’ve no doubt there’ll be a very good outpouring of people for that game to support their country. So 100%, it will add pressure on them.”An extraordinary tournament was treated to another thrilling finish overnight, as Australia maintained their 100% record by hunting down a record World Cup target of 278 with three balls to spare. Quite apart from being a spectacle in its own right, the result was good news for England, as it means that they and India have each lost three games.Related

Assuming both sides win their remaining fixtures, Net Run Rate could be the deciding factor in the race for a top-four finish, with England potentially having an advantage in that regard given that they have two matches against the group’s bottom two sides, Bangladesh and Pakistan, to come.”Obviously we’re in a position where we are relying on other people’s results,” Brunt said. “So there’s something of becoming a fan of other teams, as it may be, which is not what you want but that’s just the reality of it. But it’s been great to watch all the other nations, and be a part of games like that, putting on exciting games of cricket.Reflecting on the glut of cliffhangers in the tournament to date, Brunt added: “As players it’s certainly never a situation you want to be in, and every game has been that kind of situation. Obviously in the last three games we’ve lost, we’ve probably lost by a total of about 20 runs [three wickets, 7 runs, 12 runs], which is mad.”These things generally happen rarely, so for every game to be going down the wire just shows you how many nerves there are, and how much teams have improved. We don’t necessarily take it for granted or think less of these teams, it’s just we’ve not played these teams in forever. People can improve in six months, never mind three or four years. So it’s been a learning experience along the way, and it’s great to see everybody playing good cricket and different people coming out of the woodwork.”Despite the victory over India, Brunt is conscious that England’s standards have been a long way short of the levels that carried them to the title in 2017. But, she said, after a bruising Ashes campaign and a tricky first three weeks at the World Cup, an experienced squad can yet be galvanised by the chance to finish their winter on a high.”We’ve had 10 weeks with our backs against the wall,” Brunt said. “We fought a lot in Australia. We gave everything in the Ashes. From there we were probably not in the best headspace. But we are certainly learning to show fight and adapt quickly, and move on pretty quick from disappointments”You can’t be in form all the time. But what you can do is always show fight and turn up, and that’s what we’re doing. It might not be pretty at times. But that’s just how we’ve got to do it, and how we’re going to get past each game. Hopefully things will improve.”

Man City must regret selling their dream Rodri replacement for just £10.5m

Manchester City have struggled this season, winning just once in their last 11 games in all competitions. Their performances find them fifth in the Premier League, already nine points off first-placed Liverpool.

Pep Guardiola’s side have averaged the most possession in the division (62.7%), the most shots taken per game (17.6) and have conceded the fewest shots per match (9.2).

However, their biggest issue is the amount of xG they concede, already giving up 26.51 xG (10th most in the division) and 0.18 xG per shot (the most in the league).

All of this began to deteriorate since the injury of Rodri, who has been the metronome of this City side in recent years, and his importance has been further exemplified in his absence.

Rodri's influence at Manchester City

Since joining Man City back in 2019 for a club record fee (at the time) of £62.8m, Rodri has made 260 appearances, scoring 26 goals, providing 30 assists and totalling 20,560 minutes played.

The 28-year-old made history last season, becoming the player with the longest unbeaten run in club football history, going 74 games unbeaten.

He also has a 78% win rate since the start of the 2022/33 season, whilst City only have a 57% win rate without him, which is dropping each week.

Rodri’s importance can’t be underestimated, and their lack of a replacement has seen a huge drop-off in their performances with his injury this season, but that all could have been avoided, or at least minimised, had they not sold an academy graduate back in 2022.

Man City sold the perfect replacement

A certain Roméo Lavia was sold to Southampton back in 2022, for a fee of just around £10.5m in what was a rather understated move at the time.

18 at the moment in his career, he went on to have a brilliant breakthrough season, earning himself a move to Chelsea in the 2023 summer window where despite an injury-hit debut campaign, is now showing the type of form that would make him a brilliant fit at the Etihad Stadium.

So, now an “elite number 6” in the words of scout Jacek Kulig, how does he compare to Guardiola’s current options in the middle of the park?

Stats taken from FBref

Well, Rodri completed a ridiculous 12.4 progressive passes per 90l ast season, as well as 11.9 passes into the final third, which was more than all three of the other midfielders.

Lavia ranked the lowest in this metric, but playing for Chelsea, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernández can often take a lot of this progressive burden, which will affect his stats in comparison.

Where the Blues star does thrive is defensive actions per 90, making the most tackles, the most blocks and the most interceptions, whilst being the only one close to Rodri in terms of aerial duels won, despite being just 5 foot 11, compared to Rodri, who stands at 6 foot 3.

This isn’t to say all of City’s problems would go away had they had Lavia in reserve for Rodri. However, many of their problems coming in transition, that extra protection in front of the defensive line, the ability to cover ground and recover the ball, would have been very helpful in the absence of their Spanish midfield maestro.

Sangha keeps NSW in hunt for Shield final

NSW’s hopes of reaching the Sheffield Shield final remain alive, thanks to a crucial unbeaten century from new captain Jason Sangha against South Australia.

Jason Sangha marked his first-class captaincy debut with an unbeaten century against South Australia in Adelaide to keep NSW’s Sheffield Shield final hopes intact.Needing a win to have any chance of featuring in next week’s final, a patched-up NSW side ended day one at 6-243 after being sent in to bat on a challenging Karen Rolton Oval pitch. The injury-hit Blues needed to make four changes among their top-six, but 22-year-old Sangha stepped up to the task to complete his century just before stumps.Sangha held the innings together – just as he did last week in a match-saving knock against Western Australia – to finish the day on 104.Sangha struck 12 boundaries and faced 191 balls in four-and-a-half hours at the crease.NSW went into the crucial final round contest without three captaincy options in Moises Henriques, Daniel Hughes and incumbent skipper Kurtis Patterson.Henriques suffered a calf injury in last week’s draw with Western Australia, Hughes has a broken thumb, while Patterson remained in Sydney with his wife for the birth of their first child. In addition, allrounder Hayden Kerr (hamstring) and wicketkeeper Peter Nevill (shoulder) were also ruled unavailable for the Blues.South Australia were notably without Australian representatives Travis Head and Alex Carey. The absentees allowed the day to be marked by strong debut performances with both bat and ball.NSW opener Blake Nikitaras was the second-best contributor for the Blues, batting through the first session for 44, including a remarkable pulled six over mid-wicket.Meanwhile, Jordan Buckingham, one of three new faces for the Redbacks along with Bailey Capel and Thomas Kelly, was the best with the ball for the home side, returning 3-59. Among his victims were Matthew Gilkes (41) and hard-hitting allrounder Jack Edwards (5).South Australia are the only state without a chance of playing in the March 31 Shield final.

Newcastle now monitoring "sublime" £20m Premier League youngster

Newcastle United are now monitoring a “sublime” Premier League player who has an affordable asking price, according to a report.

Newcastle transfer news

Although they are significantly hampered by the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, Newcastle are still looking at ways in which they can improve their squad in January and beyond.

Amid the uncertainty around Alexander Isak’s future, Newcastle have been linked with a move for Corinthians striker Yuri Alberto, who could be available for the relatively low fee of £17m this winter.

However, The Athletic reporter Chris Waugh believes that Eddie Howe will be more keen to strengthen in a different area of the pitch, saying: “As things stand, right-wing is very much the priority position, ahead of center-back,” Waugh reported. “Right-sided attack is the area they feel can be most improved upon.”

The Magpies are believed to have identified a number of targets that fit the bill, with Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo at the top of the list, although West Ham United winger Mohammed Kudus could also be considered.

Newcastle scouting Southampton gem

Mbeumo and Kudus aren’t the only Premier League players Howe has in mind, however, as Caught Offside report Newcastle have sent scouts to monitor Southampton’s Tyler Dibling this season.

Dibling is in high demand across the Premier League, with the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Aston Villa also being named as potential suitors, so there is likely to be stiff competition for his signature.

There has been a growing interest in the 18-year-old since his performance in the Saints’ loss against Liverpool last month, but his current employers are adamant they don’t want to sell him.

While they are likely to resist any interest in the winger, Southampton are said to have set an affordable asking price of around €25m (£20m), which shouldn’t be too prohibitive, at least for the Premier League’s top clubs.

Newcastle leading the race to sign £16.5m gem with a "magical" left foot

The Magpies are in pole position.

1 ByHenry Jackson Dec 9, 2024

It is exciting news that Newcastle are interested in the Southampton ace, given how highly he is rated, with journalist Jacob Tanswell describing him as “sublime” earlier in the campaign. Current manager Russell Martin also sang the starlet’s praises after his performance against Brighton & Hove Albion at the end of last month.

Although the Exeter-born winger is less proven than the likes of Mbeumo and Kudus, he is likely to be a far more affordable option, which may be necessary for Newcastle, given their financial challenges.

As such, Howe should continue to monitor Dibling ahead of the January transfer window to see how he progresses.
