Munro smashes 90 as Islamabad United embarrass Quetta Gladiators by chasing target in 10 overs

United bowlers played their part too; Javed and Wasim combined their eight overs for 30 runs while Hasan took two wickets

Danyal Rasool11-Jun-2021

Colin Munro struck a 36-ball unbeaten 90•Pakistan Super League

A spellbinding, soul-destroying, record-breaking opening partnership between Usman Khawaja and Colin Munro saw Islamabad United thrash Quetta Gladiators by 10 wickets, polishing off the target of 134 with an eye-watering 10 overs to spare. It included the highest Powerplay total in PSL history as Islamabad ran up 97 in the first six, with Munro bringing up his half-century in 20 balls; He would go on to finish unbeaten on 90 having faced just 36 deliveries.Indeed, only three times in top-flight franchise T20 cricket has a higher powerplay total been achieved as the Gladiators were left helpless in the face of a genuinely stunning onslaught. It leaves the Gladiators on the brink of crashing out of the tournament.Aside from the first over of the game, where Hasan Ali sloppily conceded 15, United were on top from start to finish. Akif Javed and Mohammad Wasim kept things tight and made regular inroads, while Mohammad Musa weathered a couple of huge sixes from Andre Russell to come back and dismiss the Gladiators’ star man the same over. More worryingly, though, he struck Russell on the head a couple of balls earlier, leading to a lengthy concussion test. Russell would not return to the field all match, and footage later showed him being stretchered to hospital. On the field, though, the Gladiators continued to lose regular wickets, never quite threatening to pull away from United’s bowlers. Jake Weatherald provided the most substantial contribution with a steady 43, but when his side needed someone else to kick on, there was no one to be found. Azam Khan struggled for fluency in a stuttering innings, while captain Sarfaraz Ahmed fell early. With the side being bowled out for 133, they needed a big contribution with the ball, but Khawaja and Munro soon put any such notions to beat. The record-breaking standKeen viewers of the PSL may be aware United like to take full advantage of the powerplay with quality overseas batters, but this might be the finest exponent of the art in the history of this league. Munro got things going off Naseem Shah’s first over using a combination of pure timing and artistic placement, fulfilling the role his former Kiwi teammate Luke Ronchi used to execute with such perfection for this side. After Naseem – Russell’s concussion substitute – was plundered for 19 in the first over, the floodgates were opened, and Khawaja got into the act soon enough.Mystifyingly, the Gladiators continued to go with pace on the ball, and that played right into the hands of a sweet timer like Khawaja. Fellow Australian Jack Wildermuth went for three caressed fours off the inning’s third over, before Mohammad Hasnain was picked up and put away over fine leg, all using the tearaway fast bowler’s own pace. The 50 was up, and the game was quickly over as a contest, with the records beginning to tumble. No 100-plus partnership in all of PSL history has ever seen a higher run rate than Khawaja and Munro’s 13.70, and it wasn’t even mindless slogging. Repeatedly, the two used field placement, perfect timing, and sharp footwork to remain one step ahead of the hapless Gladiators, and when Munro reverse-swept Mohammad Nawaz for six over third man in the tenth over, putting Sarfaraz’s side out of their misery seemed like an act of mercy. The perfect replacement Faheem Ashraf’s absence for three games seemed like a pivotal blow for United, but Javed and Wasim filled those boots masterfully at the top of the innings. After a loose opening over from Hasan threatened to allow the Gladiators to get off to a flyer, Javed consolidated with a tidy six balls from his end. He tagged Wasim in then, who left veteran South African Faf du Plessis at first flustered, and then embarrassed, working him over with a nastily rearing bouncer before cleaning up the middle stump with one that kept low.It put the Gladiators on the back foot completely, and in the five powerplay overs the pair bowled, the batters managed a mere 21 runs. They weren’t done, though, Akif returning to prise out Weatherald, outthinking the Australian with a leg-stump full toss after all three stumps were exposed for a ramp shot. Wasim, meanwhile, had Nawaz walking back thanks to a near-perfect middle and leg stump yorker that knocked back his stump. Their combined figures of 8-0-30-3 went a long way towards illustrating the story of Islamabad’s dominance in that first innings.Where they standUnited move into second place with eight points, while the Gladiators are cut further adrift at the bottom, with just one win in six.

Birmingham must rue selling £3m ace who’s now worth as much as Stansfield

The bleakness that engulfed Birmingham City after relegation down to League One was confirmed has now been replaced by an infectious optimism around St. Andrew’s, as the new-look side take the third tier by storm.

Chris Davies’ men will hope that their stay in the lowly division is a very swift one, and it looks like it’ll be a whistle-stop tour at best, with the rampant Blues only kept off the top of the early League One table currently owing to the fact they have a game to catch up on.

Jay Stansfield will be raring to go this weekend after netting twice last time out against an equally ambitious Wrexham side, with the bumper £20m amount splashed out to get him to relocate back to the West Midlands already paying off.

Stansfield's start at Birmingham

There were plenty of eyebrows raised amongst avid EFL fans when Stansfield linked back up with his former employers for such a lavish amount on deadline day, concluding Birmingham’s over-the-top spending methods in the window in some style.

Money does talk, however, and Stansfield will believe he can sharpen his goalscoring prowess in the third tier even more, having netted 13 goals in all competitions for his relegated side last season, before making this permanent move happen.

He had a dream debut back in the West Midlands, with his two important strikes helping Birmingham come out on top against Wrexham last time out, as more League One defenders now wait anxiously for how Stansfield could twist and turn them moving forward.

However, as much as winning the ex-Fulham youngster back was a major plus in the transfer department, Birmingham have also fallen victim to some poor decision-making with deals in and out of the club over the years, including letting Jobe Bellingham leave for just £3m last year.

Birmingham midfielder Jobe Bellingham.

Bellingham's increased transfer value

Bellingham’s transfer value has only gone up and up since leaving Birmingham behind for pastures new at Sunderland, as the impressive 18-year-old continues to star for Regis Le Bris’ Black Cats.

From 51 appearances playing in Wearside to date, the teenage sensation has managed to amass a respectable return of seven goals and two assists, leading to the attacking midfielder being touted for a move to Serie A titans Lazio, among other luxurious outfits.

He was even labelled as a “wonderful” talent by interim Sunderland boss Mike Dodds during the 2023/24 season, before further cementing himself as a key part of the first team under his new French manager this campaign.

Bellingham would unfortunately never blossom into a top first-team performer at St. Andrew’s, as can be seen looking at the table above, with no goal contributions coming his way from 24 men’s appearances for the Blues.

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

Therefore, at the time, £3m must have felt like a substantial amount, but with his recent valuation coming in at around the £20m mark when clubs were sniffing this summer – the same as what Birmingham reportedly paid to land Stansfield – the Blues might have well been better equipped to exercise more patience.

Of course, hindsight is a funny old thing, but Birmingham would have loved to have got more out of their homegrown product when they could have, before he became a top performer in the Championship.

That’s the level the Blues will be striving to get back to as soon as possible, with Birmingham perhaps even facing off against their ex-midfielder next campaign if everything goes to plan.

Former Birmingham star would be worth more than Stansfield if sold in 2024

South Africa eye T20I trophy but want middle order to step up

If Ireland want to test themselves before the T20 World Cup, this is their chance

Firdose Moonda21-Jul-2021

Ireland and South Africa are at two ends of their planning timelines before the T20 World Cup•Sportsfile via Getty Images

Big PictureSouth Africa are one win away from being able to declare their winter tours successful bar one ODI defeat. Victory in the T20I series will give them three trophies out of four, after they swept West Indies in the Tests, won the T20I series in a decider and shared the ODI series with Ireland. Should South Africa win the T20I series in Ireland, it will take the number of T20I series won under Mark Boucher to two out of seven, and overall number to five out 15 across formats. A win in the second of the three-match series will also leave South Africa with room to experiment in the finale, something they desperately need.Despite there only being five more T20Is for South Africa before the T20 World Cup, they have several strategic questions to address which range from the make-up of the top five to the sixth bowling option. So far, in Ireland, they have chosen six specialist batters, a spin-bowling allrounder, three quicks and a specialist spinner, which seems a likely combination for a World Cup in the UAE but may leave their line-up a little thin. South Africa need the middle order to start stepping up and that may be the focus of the next two matches.Ireland are at the other end of their planning timeline. They have only just made their return to the shortest format and have another seven matches before the T20 World Cup, though only two more against this opposition. No disrespect to Zimbabwe but they did not appear in the best of shape, and if Ireland want to test themselves against an obviously strong side, this is their best opportunity. They came back from the washout in the first ODI to take the series lead when they won the second and will want to spring a similar surprise to level this rubber before Saturday’s finale.Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)
Ireland LWLLL
South Africa WWLWWIn the spotlight Simi Singh is enjoying the form of his career with a century in the final ODI and the best economy rate among the Irish bowlers in the opening T20I. It’s a good time for the offspinner to be coming to the fore, with a T20 World Cup in the UAE on the horizon and Ireland’s attack exhibiting a mixture of skills, including the (now) part-time spin of George Dockrell. Singh also has all the making of a strong lower-order allrounder, and adds to Ireland’s power hitting. His former student, Harry Tector, who has cleared the rope with authority, is also part of the outfit.Bat or ball, Simi Singh is ready to step up•Sportsfile via Getty Images

Rassie van der Dussen played club cricket in Belfast for two years in 2014 and 2015, scored 1865 runs at an average of 81 and top-scored with 190* and he will hope some of that rubs off in his first appearance in the city since. By his standards, van der Dussen may not have had the returns he wanted on this trip, with two scores over 50 in 11 innings across formats in the West Indies and Ireland. While van der Dussen has become a stable presence in the South African line-up, there are still some concerns about his ability to score quickly and take the game away from the opposition, and he will want to dismiss those in the next two matches.Team news Kevin O’Brien’s lack of runs is a worry for Ireland but they are more than likely to give him another run as they look to build up to the T20 World Cup. Given that Ireland have only just got back to this format, after last playing in March 2020, they will want to allow themselves some time to create continuity.Ireland (possible): 1 Paul Stirling, 2 Kevin O’Brien, 3 Andy Balbirnie (capt), 4 Harry Tector, 5 George Dockrell, 6 Lorcan Tucker (wk), 7 Shane Getkate, 8 Simi Singh, 9 Barry McCarthy, 10 Josh Little, 11 Craig YoungSouth Africa went into the first T20I top heavy and included all four opening batters in their squad in the XI. Aiden Markram was their top performer at No. 4, showing the much talked about versatility they hoped they could get from him. It still leaves them a little under-staffed in the middle order but, with George Linde performing well in the allrounder role, there isn’t much they can do to lengthen the line-up. Kyle Verreynne and Heinrich Klaasen are likely to remain on the bench.South Africa (possible): 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Temba Bavuma (capt), 3 Janneman Malan, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Rassie van der Dussen, 6 David Miller, 7 George Linde, 8 Kagiso Rabada, 9 Lizaad Williams, 10 Lung Ngidi 11 Tabraiz ShamsiPitch and conditions This will be the first sight of Stormont in the series and it’s set to be hot. Northern Ireland is in the midst of a heatwave with temperatures set to reach 27 degrees on Thursday. The series moves to Belfast, which last held a T20I in 2015 and has not hosted any top-eight teams, so South Africa’s visit is easily the most high profile.Stats and trivia Andy Balbirnie needs 33 runs to become the fifth Irish player to reach 1000 T20I runs Tabraiz Shamsi has enjoyed his best year as an international in 2021. He has already played more matches than in any other calendar year, taken more than double the number of wickets than in any other year and more than halves his average. He has 21 wickets at 13.28 this year, leads the T20I wicket-takers’ list and has the lowest economy rate among the top 10, at 5.47Quotes “All our bowlers were pretty good. Simi stood out with his economy rate and Josh bowled really well and Mark as well. A lot of the bowlers can take the credit. They did a really good job for us at the halfway stage and its disappointing we couldn’t back them up with the bat.”
Malahide’s wicket was on the slower side, especially as the games went on. There was quite a lot of traffic on the square. This wicket is a lot fresher. Not too much green grass but the even grass might result in a bit more bounce. The outfield looks really quick. Hopefully in these remaining T20I games theres quite a lot of runs.

Everton make approach to sign 17 y/o being chased by clubs worth billions

Everton are believed to have made an approach to sign a major South American prospect, according to a fresh transfer update.

Everton manager & takeover latest

The future of Sean Dyche at Goodison Park is a big talking point currently, with the Blues enduring an awful start to the season that has seen them pick up just one point from their opening five Premier League matches. This Saturday’s visit of Crystal Palace is a huge game for the manager, who will know that defeat will heap massive pressure on him.

There is also the small matter of The Friedkin Group’s takeover of Everton hopefully going through in the very near future, having agreed a deal to purchase Farhad Moshiri’s 94.1% stake.

Potential replacements for Dyche are already being mooted, including former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri, who was most recently in charge of Lazio, with Dan Friedkin and Co said to be eyeing their Serie A connections in search of a new boss.

Graham Potter is another name who has been thrown into the mix, having not been in management since his doomed spell at Stamford Bridge, while former England manager Gareth Southgate has also been mentioned as an option.

Now, a piece of transfer news has emerged regarding the Blues, as they look to acquire the signature of an exciting young talent.

Everton pushing to sign 17-year-old attacker

According to a report from UOL [via Sport Witness], Everton have made an approach to sign Sao Paulo forward Henrique Carmo, who is seen as one of his current club’s “great prospects”.

Both the Blues and Paris Saint-Germain are thought to have “already expressed interest” in snapping up the 17-year-old, while Saudi side Al-Qadsiah are also battling to sign him, as well as an unnamed Portuguese club. His current deal expires in December 2025, but other clubs will be able to strike a pre-contract agreement with him from July next year.

Everton's home stadium, Goodison Park.

Not a huge amount will be known about Carmo to Everton supporters, considering he is playing in Brazil and only made his first-team debut back in August. The fact that Sao Paulo cherish him so much and are desperate for him to sign an extension says so much about his ability, however, and there could be so much more to come from him in the next 10 or 15 years.

Carmo has won three caps for Brazil at Under-16 level, scoring once, as well as bagging a goal and an assist apiece for Sao Paulo’s Under-20s, despite still only being 17 years of age. He clearly wouldn’t be coming in as a key man from the off, should Everton agree to beat PSG and others to his signature, but he would be seen as a long-term acquisition with the potential to grow into something special.

TFG want him: Everton looking at 4-3-3 "genius" to upgrade on Sean Dyche

Change could soon be afoot for the Merseysiders.

ByAngus Sinclair Sep 26, 2024

Whether the Blues have the financial clout to beat the likes of PSG and Al-Qadsiah is up for debate, but The Friedkin Group’s takeover will hopefully ensure that more funds are available than under Moshiri.

West Indies hold T20I edge against CPL-acclimatised Pakistan

The availability of Gayle, Russell, Bravo and Pollard makes the hosts a terrifying proposition on paper

Danyal Rasool27-Jul-2021

Chris Gayle’s T20I stats haven’t been that great this year, but he did burst into form in one of the games against Australia•AFP/Getty Images

Big PictureWest Indies’ extended warm-up for the T20 World Cup continues apace, with Pakistan the latest side the defending champions will host ahead of the global event later this year. While there might be legitimate concern around how relevant T20 cricket in the Caribbean is to a T20 World Cup on the other side of the planet in the UAE, you can’t really argue West Indies will go into it undercooked.A slightly below-par series in Grenada saw South Africa give the home side a bloody nose and walk away with the trophy, but Nicholas Pooran’s men bounced back strongly in St Lucia to hammer Australia 4-1 and get themselves back on track. Part of the excitement around West Indies stems from the return of most of their key players that have, for one reason or another, been unavailable to them for the large parts of the previous decade. With Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle, Andre Russell and Kieron Pollard all back in the maroon, West Indies are perhaps the most intimidating side on paper, and will be the most closely watched.Certainly more so than Pakistan, who fly to Barbados off the back of a 2-1 series reverse in England. It’s a measure of how much expectations have been managed in Pakistan that that result was viewed as something of an over-performance, so heavily unfancied was Babar Azam’s side against England. Things don’t get much easier, though, even if Pakistan have a perfect series record against West Indies, because the side they face bears little resemblance, both in personnel and intensity, to the one they beat on these shores in 2017.Still, that positive head-to-head means Pakistan are unlikely to fear the hosts going into this Covid-shortened series. Three T20Is in England ensure they don’t come in rusty against a well-oiled West Indian machine, and with the CPL among the more popular overseas T20I competitions for Pakistan players, this land carries little of the unfamiliarity it might have done in previous years. These two sides are very different from each other, both in style and T20 philosophy, and that contrast should make for an absorbing four games over the next week.Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)

In the spotlight Is the greatest batsman in T20I history now a liability for West Indies? Chris Gayle is difficult to omit whenever he makes himself available, the 41-year old now appears to be a pale shadow of the man who carried his side’s T20I hopes for a decade and a half. No longer a basher of the ball from the outset, Gayle likes to take his time settling in before unleashing, except more often than not, the opposition get rid of him before that actually happens. In 12 T20Is this year he averages under 18 with a strike rate of 120.88, down from a career figure of 140.16. If he’s looking to play himself in, he doesn’t do much of that either; just two of these 12 innings have seen him cross 21. The PSL is the league he’s struggled in more than any other, so it isn’t like Pakistan’s bowlers don’t know how to keep Gayle quiet either. Expect an engaging battle. If there’s one Pakistani player who might feel at home in the West Indies side, it’s Hasan Ali. Not that there aren’t other members of the visiting squad good enough to get into a West Indies team, but there’s something delightfully Caribbean about Hasan’s charismatic personality and outgoing disposition. There’s a swagger about him that should endear him to any crowds allowed to attend. It isn’t just style, though; there’s substance to go with it. He missed the first two T20Is against England, but played crucial parts with both bat and ball in the thriller at Old Trafford. His nascent rise as perhaps Pakistan’s most valuable power hitter down the order is perfectly timed, coming as it does ahead of a series in the nation that has revolutionised the power game in the shortest format.Team news Kieron Pollard is slated to captain West Indies, but did not play the T20Is against Australia, with Pooran standing in.West Indies (possible): 1 Lendl Simmons, 2 Evin Lewis, 3 Chris Gayle, 4 Shimron Hetmyer, 5 Nicholas Pooran (wk), 6 Andre Russell, 7 Kieron Pollard (capt)/Fabian Allen, 8 Dwayne Bravo, 9 Hayden Walsh, 10 Obed McCoy, 11 Fidel Edwards.Misbah-ul-Haq admitted after the England series Pakistan weren’t making much headway in working out how to resolve their middle-order issues. That, arguably, is what series like these are for, so expect some tinkering over the next few games.Pakistan (possible): 1 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 2 Babar Azam (capt), 3 Fakhar Zaman, 4 Sohaib Maqsood, 5 Mohammad Hafeez/Sharjeel Khan, 6 Azam Khan, 7 Shadab Khan/Usman Qadir, 8 Imad Wasim, 9 Hasan Ali, 10 Mohammad Hasnain, 11 Shaheen Shah AfridiPitch and conditions Showers are expected for the late morning in Barbados, around the time the game starts. A shortened contest likely benefits the big-hitting West Indies, but there are enough dry spells tomorrow to perhaps get a full contest in.The Kensington Oval isn’t the highest-scoring T20I ground, but with no T20I played here for four years, predicting how the pitch might turn out is something of a fool’s errand.Stats and trivia This will be just the fourth four-match T20I series between two Full Member nations. One of the others also involved these two sides, when Pakistan beat West Indies 3-1 in 2017. The most recent such series took place in April, when Pakistan triumphed 3-1 in South Africa. The last T20I in Barbados took place in 2017. It was also a West Indies-Pakistan game, a low-scoring contest with Pakistan chasing 113 and winning by six wickets.Quotes”All those bad mistakes we committed in England, we don’t want to repeat them. We discussed them and we are taking forward all the learning curves. Batting and bowling is one thing but we are putting extra, a lot of time into fielding in practice. This is an important series in a way that we will check out different combinations and check our bench strength.”
