Celtic could perfectly replace Oh by signing £8.5m star

Celtic enjoyed a relatively decent season last time out as Brendan Rodgers lifted two domestic trophies in his first year back in the dugout at Parkhead.

The Northern Irish boss came in to replace Ange Postecoglou, who departed for Tottenham Hotspur and the Premier League, last summer and won the Scottish Premiership title and the SFA Cup.

However, the Hoops were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage, finishing bottom of their group, and they could be set to aim for more success in Europe to go alongside domestic success next term.

Changes to the squad could help the Scottish giants to push on in the continent and the forward department has already seen some alterations this summer.

Adam Idah spent the second half of last season on loan from Norwich City and the Hoops are reportedly continuing talks to sign him on a permanent deal, having already had an offer of £4m plus add-ons turned down.

The Scottish Premiership champions have also allowed one of their senior strikers from last season to move on this month as Hyeon-gyu Oh was sold to Genk.

Celtic's Hyeon-gyu Oh masterclass

The Belgian outfit have reportedly paid a fee of £4.5m to sign the South Korea international to bolster their forward line ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

That is £2m more than the £2.5m the Bhoys reportedly paid Suwon Bluewings to bring him to Glasgow in the January transfer window at the start of last year.

Celtic, therefore, played a masterclass with the 23-year-old attacker as they almost doubled their money on him, despite his distinct lack of quality on the pitch during his 18-month spell at Paradise.

Firstly, his finishing during the 2023/24 Premiership campaign left a bit to be desired as he plundered five goals from 6.35 xG, an underperformance of 1.35.

As you can see in the table above, only four Celtic players underperformed their expected tally by more than the South Korean dud, who was behind Kyogo Furuhashi and Idah in the pecking order in his final few months at the club.

The biggest issue for Oh was that he did not offer much outside of scoring goals and that meant that his wasteful finishing made him a liability for the side.

In the Premiership last season, the right-footed marksman failed to create a single 'big chance', did not register any assists, and only made 0.3 key passes per game across 20 appearances, which shows that he offered very little, if anything at all, as a creative threat.

Celtic striker Hyeon-gyu Oh.

Oh also lost 58% of his ground duels and 60% of his battles in the air in those 20 league outings, which shows that opposition defenders got the better of him in physical contests more often than not.

Taking these statistics into account, Celtic played a blinder to make a £2m profit on him as his performances on the pitch did not suggest that he was worth more than they paid for him, as the forward struggled physically and technically.

Rodgers could, now, perfectly replace the £4.5m sale by dipping into the market to sign one of the club's reported targets before the end of the summer transfer window.

Celtic's interest in Danish sensation

The Scottish giants reportedly have a long-standing interest in Brondby centre-forward Mathias Kvistgaarden, and they already know how much he would cost.

Back in June, Austrian outlet VICTAURI, as relayed by the Daily Record, claimed that the Hoops target had a price tag of €10m (£8.4m) this summer.

The report stated that RB Salzburg are also eyeing up a possible move for the Danish sensation and that they had already sent scouts to watch him in action.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers looks on.

However, the Bundesliga side were not willing to pay the £8.5m transfer fee required for him at the time, which meant that they did not press ahead with a deal for his services.

This means that the door could still be open for the Hoops to swoop in to bring him to Parkhead as the dream replacement for Oh in Glasgow next season.

Why Mathias Kvistgaarden would perfectly replace Oh

Being a back-up striker option, at least initially, is a hard sell for players and a difficult position for Celtic to fill, particularly if they also sign Idah from Norwich to join Kyogo in the striker ranks at Parkhead.

However, it could be sold to Kvistgaarden as an opportunity for him to prove himself and potentially earn a move to a major league in Europe, whilst winning trophies and playing European football.

At the age of 22, he is younger than Oh and seven years younger than Kyogo, which means that the talented gem could come in as the long-term heir to the Japan international.

This suggests that Kvistgaarden would be perfect for the role that the South Korean dud vacated as a young back-up striker with the potential to emerge as a key figure for Rodgers in the future.

His statistics for Brondby in the Danish Superliga also suggest that he could come in as a big upgrade on Oh, in terms of what he offers on and off the ball, as he enjoyed what talent scout Jacek Kulig described as a "superb season".

As you can see in the table above, the 22-year-old sensation offered more to his team as both a scorer and a creator of goals, whilst also winning a higher percentage of his duels.

This suggests that Kvistgaarden, who racked up 31 goals and 11 assists in 45 games for Brondby's U19s, could provide a greater threat at the top end of the pitch for Celtic, in comparison to Oh.

Therefore, the Danish marksman could perfectly replace the new Genk signing due to his age profile, potential, and quality that he could immediately bring to the team.

They failed to live up to the hype and missed the finals, losing four of the six games de Villiers played including the final game against the struggling Melbourne Renegades, when a win would have vaulted them into fourth spot and a home Eliminator. They had trouble with the balance of their side while their desire to bat at breakneck speed in every game caused consistent collapses.Bubble impactTom Banton has withdrawn from his deal citing the demands of ongoing bubbles. England team-mate Lewis Gregory will serve 14 days quarantine after arriving from South Africa which will keep him out until late December, but Dan Lawrence was a shrewd signing by the Heat as cover for that duo. Mujeeb Ur Rahman returns for the Heat but tested positive for Covid-19 late last week so it remains uncertain when he will become available while Afghanistan’s ODI series with Ireland in January could affect his availability later in the tournament. Joe Burns, Marnus Labuschagne, and Mitchell Swepson will all be unavailable for large periods due to Test duty.Player to watchChris Lynn is always a player to watch but this year he is especially important. The Heat have a very inexperienced batting line-up and Lynn hasn’t played a lot of top-level cricket of late. He had a very lean CPL and then carried the drinks for Mumbai Indians throughout the entire IPL. He has made three rapid-fire centuries in club cricket over the last two weekends but he will need consistent runs if the Heat are to win the title.Key stat (Gaurav Sundararaman)Among all the teams last season, Brisbane Heat suffered the most against spin. They lost 44 wickets, averaging just 20.78, and 39 percent of the balls they faced were dots.

Ele é o responsável pelas principais jogadas ofensivas e de recomposição do time azulino.

Fabrizio Romano: Tottenham in talks with £100k-per-week forward for months

Tottenham have been in talks with a £100,000-per-week forward and his camp since February, with Ange Postecoglou's side seemingly very keen on signing him.

Spurs targeting another attacking signing after Timo Werner

The north Londoners haven't exactly been one of the busiest Premier League sides this window, making just two senior signings.

Once-£100 million valued forward now really wants Tottenham to bid for him

He’s very keen on a move to north London.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 25, 2024

Most recently, Spurs sealed a £40 million deal to sign Archie Gray from Leeds United, with out-of-favour defender Joe Rodon re-joining the Championship side on a permanent deal to help sweeten the move.

Before one of English football's most exciting talents made the move to N17, Lilywhites chairman Daniel Levy gave the green light to extend Timo Werner's loan deal by an additional season, which includes a more favourable option to buy set at around £8.5 million.

With just over a month to go until the window shuts, supporters could be hoping that Postecoglou's side manage to get a few more key additions through the door. In terms of outgoings, Spurs have been very active, ridding their manager's squad of unwanted players and trimming the club's wage bill.

Alongside Rodon, who signed for Leeds in a £10 million transfer, the likes of Ryan Sessegnon, Japhet Tanganga, Eric Dier, Ivan Perisic, Tanguy Ndombele and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg have all left.

Girona are in talks with Tottenham to sign Bryan Gil and Spurs are also prepared to sell Richarlison for £60 million, according to reports, so they could yet raise more money to fund potential transfers.

Perhaps Levy, technical director Johan Lange and the wider recruitment team are operating on a sell-to-buy policy, first offloading surplus players before a late-window surge. In any case, it is believed by many reliable media sources that Spurs want to make another attacking signing before deadline day on August 30.

That could be in the form of a new winger, with renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano backing claims that Wolves star Pedro Neto and Crystal Palace forward Eberechi Eze are on their radar.

The latter has been a crucial player at Selhurst Park since joining the Eagles from QPR, scoring 26 goals and registering a further 17 assists across 124 appearances in all competitions.

Tottenham have been in talks with Eze's camp since February

Writing in his Dailybriefing, Romano has now shared an interesting bit of detail on Spurs' serious interest in the England international. The reliable transfer reporter claims that Tottenham have been in talks with Eze's camp since February, with interest from north London materializing into player discussions for five months.

However, while they're still very keen on the £100,000-per-week attacker, Spurs are still yet to place a formal bid on the table for him. Eze has a rumoured release clause of around £60 million written into his Palace contract, but it remains to be seen if Levy is prepared to go that high in a potential deal for the 26-year-old.

Jason Roy's 74* the cherry on top of dominant Scorchers victory

With Jhye Richardson leading their bowling attack, they are looking like the team to beat

Matt Roller12-Jan-2021Perth Scorchers rolled back the years to win their fifth game on the bounce, trouncing Hobart Hurricanes by nine wickets at Optus Stadium to jump to third in the BBL table. A superb bowling performance restricted the Hurricanes to 139, with Jhye Richardson, AJ Tye and Fawad Ahmed all impressing, before a belligerent 123-run stand between Jason Roy and Liam Livingstone helped them home with 22 balls to spare. The Scorchers have missed out on the finals for two years in a row following a sustained period of dominance, but are beginning to resemble their former selves. They have won all four of their home games, conceding totals of 89, 97 and 168 before tonight, with Richardson leading an impressive pace attack, while their batting line-up is beginning to click.Their cruise to victory came in the absence of Colin Munro due to a quad injury, though he is expected to re-join the squad shortly, and with the possibility of Ashton Agar returning to fitness in time for the knockout stage, the Scorchers are quickly becoming the team to beat. The one blemish for the Scorchers came in the form of an injury to Mitchell Marsh, who went off with a side injury three balls into his spell and was replaced by X-factor sub Kurtis Patterson. Adam Voges, their head coach, told Channel 7 that it was a “precautionary measure” and that he anticipated Marsh would be available again soon, even if only as a specialist batsman.Jason Roy led Perth Scorchers’ victory charge•Getty Images

Scorchers’ fiery startThe competition’s leading run-scorer and leading wicket-taker came up against one another from the start after the Hurricanes chose to bat, but Ben McDermott was no match for the irresistible Richardson.Touching 90mph/145kph, Richardson conceded only two runs from his opening two-over burst, with his skiddy lengths proving impossible to get away. Ashton Turner posted attacking fields, hunting early wickets with two slips in place, and Richardson duly delivered. He made the breakthrough with a perfect length ball on a sixth-stump line to McDermott, whose attempted punch away from his body only managed to divert the ball onto the top of his leg stump via the inside edge.Dawid Malan has fond memories of Perth, where he made his only Test hundred in 2017, but chipped to mid-on for a six-ball duck. With D’Arcy Short out of nick and Peter Handscomb bowled by a Fawad Ahmed googly, the Hurricanes limped to 3 for 50 at the halfway stage – the joint-lowest 10-over total of the season.Hurricanes surge earlyThe Hurricanes became only the third team this season to use the Power Surge at the earliest possible opportunity, taking it in the 11th and 12th overs. Tye’s over ended with three consecutive boundaries – two off Short’s bat, one via his pad – and Richardson was taken for two himself as 24 runs came from the two Surge overs. With Marsh off the field, Colin Ingram decided to target Aaron Hardie, who would have to bowl at least three overs in the innings, but he skewed a catch to Patterson running back at extra cover to leave the Hurricanes four down after 14 overs.Ahmed’s tight figures were dented by two sixes from Tim David in his final over, but Short chipped to extra cover to fall for a scratchy 54 off 47 balls. Despite a late flourish between David and debutant Mitch Owen, the Hurricanes’ total of 139 always looked a long way short.Roy, Livingstone finally fireRoy and Livingstone have struggled for form since they came out of quarantine after Christmas, with neither reaching fifty in their first five innings of the season, and both took their time to get set as they struggled for timing early on in the chase. Livingstone was given a life first ball when Short put down a straightforward chance at backward point, but his ramped six off Scott Boland in the fourth over seemed to kick the Scorchers into gear.Roy has often struggled against wristspin in T20 cricket, but treated Short and Sandeep Lamichhane with disdain on a true pitch. He reverse-swept Lamichanne’s fourth ball for four, before clubbing Short for six over long-on and continuing to score freely as the Scorchers cruised towards their target.Livingstone had eked out 18 off 21 balls when he decided to target Owen’s first over as a BBL player, top-edging him over the keeper for four before spanking two sixes to take 18 from the ninth over. Roy added three consecutive fours off Short in the 10th, taking them to 86 at the halfway mark. He brought up his half-century off 35 balls, and Livingstone reached a 37-ball fifty in the 14th.Livingstone holed out to deep square leg off Boland with 17 required, but Roy sealed the deal, clubbing four through midwicket before Lamichhane put down a half-chance at long leg to allow them through for the winning runs.

Waqar Younis: Hasan Ali's 'comeback is a great message for young bowlers'

Bowling coach impressed with the way fast bowler has overcome injury and regained top form

Hasan Ali’s story can be great inspiration for young fast bowlers, who fear that injury could bring their careers to a halt, according to Pakistan bowling coach Waqar Younis.Hasan completed a match-winning ten-wicket haul in Rawalpindi, which led Pakistan to their first Test series win over South Africa since 2003. But it was only two years ago that he was almost lost to Pakistan cricket. His body was repeatedly letting him down. His groin, his back, his ribs, everything seemed brittle. There was even talk of surgery. It troubled him enough that he wondered if he would ever play cricket again.Related

Hasan resurfaces with threatening zeal

Misbah: Beating SA 'was like a breath of fresh air'

“Hasan is a great character,” Younis said on Wednesday. “He was coming from injury and the way he performed, hats off to him. This must not be forgotten that Hasan got so much success at a very early age but then was suddenly plunged into oblivion due to injury and was in a very tough situation. I can tell you from my own personal experience from the 1992 World Cup – it really hurts. It feels like the end of the world because you have seen such highs in your career and then when you see absolutely nothing, it’s very, very hard.”Hasan even lost his national contract, but he didn’t give up. After an extensive rehabilitation programme, he returned pretty much to his very best at the recent Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and captained Central Punjab all the way to the final, where he scored a century and picked up five wickets. The game ended in a tie and Hasan emerged as the Player of the Series for his 43 wickets at 20.06. That performance put him back on the national radar and he is back leading Pakistan to victories.”Hasan is doing a wonderful job. I have seen him in tough times being injured and struggling, but the best thing is he never gave up,” Younis said. “He bowled really well [in the Rawalpindi Test]. From my playing experience, or even from watching Wasim Akram or any other big successful bowler, I can tell that if you want to pick up fast bowling, you have to know that such injuries will come in your way. Fast bowling isn’t a natural act. It puts a lot of burden on your body and you have to be strong physically and mentally.”I have seen Hasan do all the hard work, the work he put into his recovery, getting fitter, playing first-class cricket and reviving himself again. He is fitter than ever and of course he played a big hand in winning the series [against South Africa] with support from others: Shaheen [Shah Afridi] and Yasir [Shah] bowled well, Nauman [Ali] was brilliant and Faheem Ashraf was excellent in our pack of bowlers. They all did their job and this 2-0 is massive because South Africa is a big team to have toured Pakistan and winning against them is a big achievement. His comeback is a great message for the young fast bowlers out there that where there is a will there’s a way to make a comeback.”The time of Pakistan fast bowlers having long and productive careers is over. Since the days of Younis, Akram and Shoaib Akhtar, Pakistan have gone through 37 pacers, and none of them have really managed to last. Even highly skillful ones like Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz chose to step away from red-ball cricket because of the strain it placed on them. It also hasn’t helped that over the last ten years, Pakistan have had to play most of their home Tests on slow and low surfaces in the UAE, which forced them to invest in spin, leading to a situation where fast bowlers were more or less support acts to the likes of Saeed Ajmal and Yasir Shah.”A fast bowler’s career can surely go on for five to seven years. Maybe longer. Neither me nor Wasim or Shoaib played for their whole life. It’s a circle and new players come in replacing the previous ones. Look at Hasan Ali’s comeback strongly and he earned his place,” Younis said. “Sometimes injuries play a major part. Even Pat Cummins or Jasprit Bumrah and few others in other countries, they all have had their fair share of injuries in their career but they came back after rehabilitation with full fitness and they are staying relevant with their performance.”I am hopeful now that we have started playing at home, you will see this present lot of fast bowlers will have lengthy careers with success. If you see, most of the bowlers do well in their own conditions. I feel they are more comfortable bowling at home.”
