Shane Warne says Jos Buttler 'should definitely be opening' for Rajasthan Royals

“My hands were a little bit tied and I would have liked to have had a bit more of an influence on the team,” he adds

Jos Buttler has a knock before the game•BCCI

Shane Warne, Rajasthan Royals’ mentor and brand ambassador, has said that Jos Buttler “should definitely be opening” the batting for the franchise, having shifted down into the middle order for their last three games.Rajasthan have used five different opening pairs in the tournament to date, with Robin Uthappa and Ben Stokes combining at the top since their game against the Royal Challengers Bangalore on October 17. That has meant Buttler moving into the middle order – a role he had filled only once in all T20 cricket since midway through the 2018 IPL season – where he has so far posted scores of 24, 70* and 9.Warne, whose involvement with the team management has been reduced this season, said that he thought using Buttler as a middle-order floater was a mistake, and that the Royals should revert to using him at the top of the order alongside Steven Smith – as they did in three of their first four games.”I think Buttler should definitely be opening,” Warne told Sky Sports’ IPL Cricket Show in the UK. “I think Ben Stokes can do a job opening the batting, but I would like Ben in the middle overs – that’s where he has played all of his cricket and done really well.”That’s not to say he [Stokes] can’t open, but Jos Buttler to me – if you’re picking a world XI, the first one pencilled in is at the top of the order, No. 1, [is] Buttler. I’m not sure why they’ve gone away from that. I think Jos has to bat at the top. I think Steven Smith should be the guy that’s the backbone of the team in their batting, so he should probably open as well with Buttler, and then you’ve got Sanju Samson, Stokes – that’s one to four, then guys like [Rahul] Tewatia who’s done really well, [and] young Riyan Parag at five and six.Warne suggested that the Royals’ think-tank had over-complicated things while trying to make up for senior players’ lack of form, and said they should return to the simple T20 mantra that teams should put their best batsmen at the top of the order to ensure they can face as many balls as possible.”As the wickets are getting slower as the tournament goes on, and the bowlers are getting so good now, the faster bowlers at the back end, you’ve got to maximise that powerplay,” Warne said. “The best players bat all the way through, or they bat to the 16th, 17th and make a hundred.”I think if you bat Jos Buttler in the middle overs, it’s that juggling act about when does he go in, how many balls does he face, and then you might get stuck like the other day. There’s only 120 balls: if Jos Buttler can face 50 or 60 of those balls, which is half, then I know he’s going to make a lot of runs.”So I want him up the top, it’s as simple as that, otherwise you can complicate it too much and say back end, he’s got all the shots and improvisation – well, in this tournament, your best players have to perform, and if they don’t perform you’re going to struggle.”That’s what Andrew McDonald, the coach, and the leaders of that team are trying to fix – all the spots that aren’t working. But as I tried to say to them: just get your best players to face the most amount of balls [sic], and if they don’t, you’re going to struggle a bit.”Warne spent some of the tournament in the UAE, but was largely seen speaking to franchise stakeholders in the stands rather than joining the rest of the Royals’ coaching staff in the dugout. He voiced some frustration at his lack of involvement with the team’s management, suggesting that his “hands were a little bit tied”.”My role was team mentor and brand ambassador, and I think they wanted me to do more of the brand ambassador stuff, talk to people in the stands. I wasn’t involved in the dugout, I wasn’t involved in debriefings, I wasn’t involved in any of that stuff.”I attended training – the coach and the captain would come and speak to me and ask for my thoughts and then implement them if they wanted to, or … they didn’t want to. At training I helped the spinners out when I could but they had a spin-bowling coach [Sairaj Bahutule] out there too, so I just worked with him.”I was trying to help out where I can. My hands were a little bit tied and I would have liked to have had a bit more of an influence on the team, but they had other people in charge.”

IPL 2020 scenarios: Kings XI's defeat marginally simplifies things for KKR, Royals in their must-win clash

Kings XI’s defeat to CSK has improved the qualification chances of RCB and Capitals

S Rajesh01-Nov-2020

KL Rahul is foxed off a slower delivery•BCCI

Rajasthan Royals: Played 13, Points 12, NRR -0.377
The Rajasthan Royals’ need to beat the Kolkata Knight Riders to keep their hopes alive. The elimination of the Kings XI has only very marginally simplified their task, in that, if the Sunrisers beat the Mumbai Indians in their last game, then the Royals’ net run rate (NRR) should be above that of the loser of the Capitals-Royal Challengers match. If the Capitals lose by a run, chasing 160, the Royals need to win in around 13.5 overs (also chasing 160). If the Royal Challengers lose by a run, chasing 160, the Royals need to win in around 13.2 overs (also chasing 160).However, given the Royals’ poor NRR, their best bet for qualification will be if the Sunrisers lose their last match. Then, the Royals will progress to the playoffs without NRR coming into play, if they beat the Knight Riders.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Kolkata Knight Riders: Played 13, Points 12, NRR -0.467
The Knight Riders are in a similar situation as the Royals, their opponents on Sunday, except that their NRR is a bit poorer. Hence, the best-case scenario for them is exactly what applies to Royals: to hope that the Sunrisers lose their last game. Then, the Knight Riders will qualify as the fourth team if they beat the Royals. If the Sunrisers win their last game, then the Knight Riders will have to win by a big enough margin which lifts their NRR above that of the loser of the Capitals-Royal Challengers match. If the Capitals lose by a run, chasing 160, the Knight Riders need to win by 77 runs. If the Royal Challengers lose by a run, chasing 160, the Knight Riders need to win by 80 runs.Royal Challengers Bangalore: Played 13, Points 14, NRR -0.145
The Kings XI’s defeat has improved the qualification chances of the Royal Challengers, even if they lose to the Capitals on Monday. If they lose on Monday, they can qualify if their NRR stays above that of the winner of the Knight Riders’ game against the Royals. If the Sunrisers lose to the Mumbai Indians, then the Royal Challengers will be through without NRR coming into play, despite a defeat to the Capitals. They will want to beat the Capitals, though, as that will secure them second place on the points table.Delhi Capitals: Played 13, Points 14, NRR -0.159
Not only have the Capitals lost their last four matches, they have also lost three by huge margins, which has shaved off a whopping 0.933 from their NRR.The Capitals are now in a similar situation as the Royal Challengers, their opponents on Monday. If they win, they will finish second; if they lose, their survival will depend on the Sunrisers-Mumbai game, and the margin of the Knight Riders-Royals match.Sunrisers Hyderabad: Played 13, Points 12, NRR 0.555
The Sunrisers have made a late surge and have an excellent NRR, but their last game is against table-toppers Mumbai Indians. However, apart from the NRR, what might work in their favour is the fact that they will play Mumbai in Sharjah, the same venue where they beat the Royal Challengers so emphatically. The equation for the Sunrisers is the simplest: beat Mumbai, and they will be through regardless of other results; lose the match, and they will be out.

Leicester City now eyeing move to sign "unique" £8m Ndidi replacement

Following the departure of Wilfred Ndidi, Leicester City have reportedly turned their attention towards handing Steve Cooper an £8m replacement ahead of next season.

Leicester transfer news

Of course, the Foxes are due some good news following such a tumultuous start to the summer, which has seen manager Enzo Maresca and star man Kiernan Dewsbuy-Hall both jump ship to join Chelsea. The former has at least since been replaced by former Nottingham Forest manager Cooper, but Leicester are yet to welcome a replacement for a player of Dewsbury-Hall's calibre.

With potential FFP sanctions on their way too, things are unlikely to get any easier for those the King Power Stadium next season, making their summer business all the more important. Replacing players will be the key, and that's not just Dewsbury-Hall, with Ndidi's departure also leaving a gaping hole in Leicester's midfield.

The Nigerian would have brought plenty of Premier League experience and quality to Cooper's midfield next season, but the new manager must now look elsewhere for options, which may see a Ligue 1 ace arrive.

According to L'equipe, Leicester City are now eyeing a move to sign Amir Richardson from Stade Reims alongside Everton and Udinese, but none of the three interested parties are willing to match the French side's reported €10M (£8m) price tag as things stand.

Imagine him & Fatawu: Leicester keen on signing ex-Messi teammate

Leicester City could pull off a very impressive free transfer deal with this summer buy.

ByKelan Sarson Jul 4, 2024

Leicester and Everton must both be careful with their spending these days, but for just £8m, it's a deal that could be worth pursuing for the Foxes as they look to replace Ndidi. Still just 22 years old, Richardson is a player who is likely to step up a level with such an opportunity, perhaps making the investment worthwhile this summer.

"Unique" Richardson can fill Ndidi void

Replacing a midfielder of Ndidi's calibre is no easy task, but given the praise of footbal writer Bence Bocsak, Richardson is certainly capable of doing just that at Leicester next season.

Bocsak was full of praise for the midfielder on X earlier this year, saying: "He’s already won the U23 AFCON with Morocco last year. Such a unique profile in terms of a midfielder – extremely tall at 1.95 metres and springy – he defends and goes forward with the ball really well. So good on the ball. Just 21 years old."

Whilst Richardson didn't receive the same amount of minutes as Ndidi last season, he proved in a smaller sample size exactly what he's capable of, outperforming Ndidi in a number of areas.

So, whilst they have their PSR concerns to think about, Leicester should pursue Richardson this summer in a deal which could cost them just £8m to kickstart their transfer window. The young midfielder has shown plenty of signs that he's one to watch.

Nottingham Forest monitoring "exciting" gem who just outscored Awoniyi

As Nuno Espirito Santo looks to add to his attacking options ahead of next season, Nottingham Forest are reportedly monitoring a future star who outscored Taiwo Awoniyi in the last campaign.

Nottingham Forest transfer news

The Midlands club wasted no time before getting their summer business going, welcoming both Eric da Silva Moreira from St Pauli and Marko Stamenic, who will spend next season on loan at Olympiacos after arriving from Red Star Belgrade. The former will, however, play a part in Nuno's side next season, looking to make an instant impact despite being just 18 years old.

The young winger told the club's official website after putting pen to paper: "I’m really happy to be here. I’ve heard a lot about the Premier League and a lot about many clubs, so I’m very happy to be at Nottingham Forest, especially at a club that has a lot of tradition just like my old club.

“Me and my family are really happy about this new challenge and I can’t wait to get started and get to know the city, the people and everything about the club.”

Nottingham Forest eyeing new striker who's scored 11 goals at City Ground

He’d bring plenty of experience to the Midlands.

ByTom Cunningham Jun 26, 2024

Moreira isn't the only young talent who could arrive though. According to Sky Sports, Nottingham Forest are monitoring Edmund Baidoo ahead of a potential summer move. The 18-year-old winger enjoyed an excellent season with Sogndal in the second tier of Norweigian football, scoring an impressive eight goals in 17 games in all competitions, whilst also assisting a further six.

With 14 goal contributions in 17 games at just 18 years old, Baidoo could quickly become quite the player if Forest decide to make their move in the coming months.

"Exciting" Baidoo can support Awoniyi's firepower

As good as Awoniyi has been since arriving in the Midlands, his injury history remains a problem for Espirito Santo and his side, as they struggle to replace his presence leading the line. And with Chris Wood on course to leave the City Ground following the expiry of his current contract at the end of the month, Baidoo could emerge as the perfect cover for Awoniyi's goals.

Outside of Awoniyi, the Reds boss will currently be searching for options within his Forest squad in need of a player of Baidoo's potential. The teenager is already proving his goalscoring calibre, having netted more than Awoniyi last season, and should only become even better in the Premier League.

Earning plenty of praise during his time in Norway, journalist Lawrence Degraft Baidoo described the winger's characteristics as "exciting" on X:

Young players seem to be the name of the game for Forest and Baidoo certainly fits into that this summer, but it remains to be seen whether those at the City Ground will make their move.

AB de Villiers could dictate fate of Mumbai Indians vs Royal Challengers Bangalore contest

Both the top-two aspirants have lost their most recent fixtures

Karthik Krishnaswamy27-Oct-2020

Going by recent history, AB de Villiers should make a big difference to the result•BCCI

Big pictureThe Mumbai Indians and the Royal Challengers Bangalore have been in and around the top three for most of IPL 2020, but neither can yet count on finishing there. The tournament table has been known to shape-shift dramatically in past seasons as the league stage approaches its close, and there’s a possibility, this year, of five teams finishing tied at 16 points.Neither team – the Royal Challengers’ net run-rate is currently barely in the positive zone – will want to be in that situation. Both teams come to this meeting having lost their most recent games, and both have the same two oppositions lying in wait after this match, one of whom is a fellow top-two aspirant in the Delhi Capitals.Wednesday’s meeting in Abu Dhabi, therefore, could prove season-defining.In the newsNavdeep Saini split the webbing on his right hand while fielding off his own bowling against the Chennai Super Kings on Sunday. He has had stitches put in, but since the injury is to his bowling hand, he is a doubtful starter on Wednesday.Rohit Sharma batted in the nets on Monday, but it seems unlikely that his hamstring injury – the ostensible reason for his exclusion from India’s squads for their upcoming tour of Australia – has healed to the extent that he can feature against the Royal Challengers.Previous meetingThe match of the tournament? Quite possibly. AB de Villiers’ unbeaten 24-ball 55 powered the Royal Challengers to 201, and victory seemed almost certain when the Mumbai Indians needed 80 from 24 balls. Ishan Kishan and Kieron Pollard had other ideas, though, and forced the game into a Super Over, where Saini kept Pollard and Hardik Pandya to just seven runs. It came down to one ball, one run, and Jasprit Bumrah to Virat Kohli, and a whip to the square-leg boundary gave the Royal Challengers two valuable points.Likely XIsMumbai Indians: 1 Ishan Kishan, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Saurabh Tiwary, 5 Hardik Pandya, 6 Kieron Pollard (capt), 7 Krunal Pandya, 8 James Pattinson, 9 Rahul Chahar, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Jasprit Bumrah.Royal Challengers Bangalore: 1 Devdutt Padikkal, 2 Aaron Finch, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 AB de Villiers (wk), 5 Moeen Ali, 6 Gurkeerat Singh, 7 Chris Morris, 8 Washington Sundar, 9 Navdeep Saini/Umesh Yadav, 10 Yuzvendra Chahal, 11 Mohammed Siraj.Rohit Sharma and Navdeep Saini are both doubtful starters•BCCI

Strategy punt In the seven matches the Royal Challengers have won this season, de Villiers has scored 246 runs at an average of 123.00 and a strike rate of 203.31. In the four matches they have lost, de Villiers has scored 78 runs at 19.50 and 120.00. Of the matches they have won, four results – including the Super-Over win over the Mumbai Indians in the teams’ previous meeting – would quite likely have gone the other way but for de Villiers’ interventions. Further evidence of the Royal Challengers’ over-reliance on de Villiers and his death-overs striking comes from their overall middle-overs run rate of 6.80, the poorest of any team this season. It’s not hurt their campaign because of de Villiers, but the Royal Challengers can’t keep expecting him to win matches singlehandedly. One way they could ease the burden on de Villiers is to push Moeen Ali up to No. 4 if they lose their second wicket before the ten-over mark. Of all the Royal Challengers batsmen to have scored at least 50 runs in the phase since his debut season in 2018, Ali has the best middle-overs strike rate – 160.50. His left-handedness would also help combat the Mumbai Indians spinners, Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya, who both turn the ball away from the right-hander. The Mumbai Indians are likely to have four left-handers – Quinton de Kock, Kishan, Saurabh Tiwary and Krunal – in their top seven, and the Royal Challengers are likely to have two offspinners to bowl at them, in Ali and Washington Sundar. De Kock (114.88), Kishan (100.99) and Krunal (79.41) all have modest strike rates against this style of bowling in the IPL since the 2018 season, while Tiwary has faced just one ball of offspin in this period. With this in mind, they could make Suryakumar Yadav open the batting, or promote Hardik Pandya or Kieron Pollard to No. 4, to ensure they have a right-hander in the mix for most of their innings.) If Yadav opens, though, the Royal Challengers could use Yuzvendra Chahal with the new ball. Since 2018, Chahal has superb records against both Yadav (14 balls, 14 runs, two wickets) and de Kock (12 balls, 11 runs, two wickets).Stats that matter Both teams have enjoyed playing in Abu Dhabi this season. The Mumbai Indians have won five of their seven games here so far, and the Royal Challengers have won two out of two. The Mumbai Indians (12.70) and the Royal Challengers (11.47) have the best death-overs (16-20) scoring rates of all batting teams this season. They have done pretty well with the ball in this phase too, with the Mumbai Indians (9.89) and the Royal Challengers (10.12) boasting the second- and third-best economy rates behind the Delhi Capitals (9.15 as on October 26). Bumrah is one wicket short of 100 in the IPL and 200 in all T20 cricket. De Villiers needs 19 runs to complete 9000 in T20 cricket, while Tiwary is 13 short of 3000.

– Cara, estou tentando – escreveu Felipe Neto.
