This striker should avoid a Liverpool move at all costs

There’s something about Liverpool and target men that just doesn’t quite work. Managers and their philosophies come and go but every club has an inherent style of play; the brand of football their youth products are bred upon; and the Reds’, for whatever reason, seems incompatible with big and burly centre-forwards.

So amid reports claiming Liverpool are targeting 6ft. 3″ Belgian battering-ram Christian Benteke, the question must be asked; will the Aston Villa striker become the next target man whose size subdues his scoring tally at Anfield?

No doubt, Benteke is a talented striker. In fact, for a 24-year-old he’s an absolute phenomenon; arguably the most physically intimidating centre-forward in the English top flight, boasting three straight Premier League campaigns of double figures and an overall return of 49 goals in 100 appearances since arriving at Villa Park from Genk in the summer of 2012.

Yes, the Belgium international’s scoring form takes disturbing dips from time to time – last season he went seven Premier League appearances without a goal and had only recorded three prior to the appointment of Tim Sherwood in February, while the season before, he endured an eleven-game baron spell – but when you’re playing a style of football that reduces every game to a spate of attritional half chances, as Villa endured under Paul Lambert, dry patches are inevitable. I have little doubt Benteke would score with increasing consistency – in excess of 15 goals per season – at a major club with creativity in midfield and good service from the flanks.

That major club, however, should not be Liverpool. They say history is doomed to repeat itself and the narrative of target men struggling at Anfield is a convincingly consistent one, starting with Emile Heskey and ending with Rickie Lambert.

The former bagged 60 goals in 223 outings for the Reds, making him arguably the most successful target man in their recent history. But even Heskey’s Anfield tenure left lingering tones of underwhelm considering he was once the club’s record signing at £11m, lasting just four seasons before being cast off to Birmingham City.

Peter Crouch produced a superior strike-rate of almost one-in-three during his three terms on Merseyside, yet Liverpool never truly got best use out of the 6ft. 7″ striker and only half of his 42 goals actually came in the Premier League. Although he produced some memorable displays against Chelsea, Arsenal and in the Champions League, the England international failed to score in his first 20 appearances and never reached double figures in the top flight.

Which brings us onto Andy Carroll. A 6ft. 4″ centre-forward Brendan Rodgers wasted no time in booting as far away from Anfield as possible during his first summer as Liverpool boss. We all know how atrociously the now-West Ham star’s Reds spell turned out, so I’ll summarise the key details; purchased for £35m, scored six goals in 44 Premier League appearances, sold to the Hammers three-and-a-half-injury-stricken years later for £15.

It’s an episode in Liverpool transfer history most fans would rather forget. But there are some important lessons to be learned. I find this extract from Jamie Carragher’s column for The Daily Mail particularly telling; [Carroll] started well, with two goals against Manchester City on his first start, but it quickly became apparent he wasn’t the right fit for the club.

“In training, he’d complain if the ball was not flung into the box — and I don’t mean from out wide. He wanted the ball to come in to him from close to the halfway line, but at Liverpool that was never going to happen.”

Benteke is arguably a more complete striker than the three aforementioned names, something he’s rarely given credit for. The Belgium international’s link up play with Andreas Weimann during his inaugural Villa campaign was exceptional in terms of technique, movement, creativity and anticipation between the two, and for a centre-forward who measures in at his awesome height, Benteke is uniquely mobile with a striding gallop and sharp turn of pace.

Yet, he still seems largely incompatible with Liverpool’s style of play. Especially under Brendan Rodgers; a manager who has spent the last three years gearing the Reds towards technically demanding, possession-based football, favouring diminutive forwards over powerful ones, flooding his midfield with as many playmakers as possible and imposing a zero-tolerance embargo on route one hoofs from the back.

It’s a significant factor in Rickie Lambert failing to hit the heights expected since joining his boyhood club last summer, even in his bit-part capacity. Tall and powerful strikers thrive upon wrestling centre-backs for every lofted pass pinged into them from audacious distances; so simply manning the line for extended periods whilst the ball travels short and eloquently around the midfield doesn’t come naturally to them.

Likewise, their sheer size makes the high-pressing game Liverpool became famed for during the 2013/14 campaign nearly impossible. They just aren’t blessed with the mobility and stamina to close down effectively for 90 minutes.

Of course, Benteke could be the exception to the rule and as previously stated, I have no doubt he possesses the pre-requisites to become a dominant force at a top Premier League club. But for a Liverpool side who rarely utilise out-and-out wingers, who have a history of target men flopping emphatically and who aren’t blessed with limitless fortunes to spend in the transfer market, Benteke’s £32.5m release clause represents an unnecessary risk for player and club.

In Focus: Ryan Hardie deserves a proper chance at Rangers before exit

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Rangers forward Ryan Hardie is the subject of interest from English Championship side Queens Park Rangers.

What’s the story?

Hardie returned from a season out on loan at St Mirren and Raith Rovers in the summer but has struggled to establish himself in the first-team and with his contract set to expire, he could be the latest young prospect to leave the club for a fraction of his potential value.

That’s according to The Scottish Sun, who say Queens Park Rangers are lining up a move for him, looking to add talent to their U23s side.

That means the Light Blues would either lose him on a free transfer next summer or face selling him next month.

Does he deserve a chance?

With Kenny Miller confirmed to be out injured for a significant period of time, there’s never been a better time for Hardie to get his opportunity in the Rangers team if they can convince him to sign a new contract at the club.

The striker scored 13 goals out on loan last season and his industrious work rate and youthful exuberance could add real energy to Rangers’ attacking set-up, especially working under Graeme Murty, who will know all about Hardie having worked with the player at U20s level.

He deserves his chance and seeing move to the Championship would be frustrating for supporters, who are crying out for an attacking talent to emerge from Rangers’ youth sides and stake a first team claim.

In Focus: Malcom can bring fresh ideas to Tottenham’s creative endeavours

As reported by The Daily Mail, Tottenham have entered the race to sign talented Brazilian winger Malcom in this month’s transfer window.

What’s the story?

While the ever impressive Harry Kane hasn’t slowed down his scoring habits, Tottenham’s other usually reliable players haven’t quite hit the heights of last season so far this term and as the January transfer window opens, freshening up their attack could really ensure they have a successful second half of the season.

One player they’re said to be interested in is Bordeaux winger Malcom.

That’s according to The Daily Mail, who say that Spurs have expressed an interest in signing the attacker, who his club rate at £40m.

However, the paper also report that they’ll face competition from the likes of Manchester United and Bayern Munich for his signature, with Bordeaux also not keen on selling him until the summer.

Who is he?

At just 20 years of age, Malcom has yet to truly test himself at the top level of the game but is showing plenty of potential in Ligue 1, demonstrating he could be ready for his big move to a more illustrious league.

So far this season he’s scored seven goals and provided five assists in 20 appearances for the French club, the kind of attacking contribution that could make him a hit with Tottenham supporters, especially considering he is already doing it at a team struggling to pick up positive results in French football. Surrounded by better players he could flourish even more.

He has the ability to play on the left or right wings, making him a versatile choice for Mauricio Pochettino too, who could use some competition to motivate the likes of Son Heung-min, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli.

With his entire career ahead of him, getting in early and securing his talent before even bigger clubs come calling would be good business from Tottenham’s perspective.

In Focus: West Ham won’t be too disappointed to miss out on £15m Boubacar deal

According to reports in The Sun on Sunday, West Ham United are interested in signing £15m-rated Fiorentina striker Khouma Babacar, but The Guardian reports that they face heavy competition for the Senegal international from Premier League rivals Crystal Palace.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Sun on Sunday says that Irons boss David Moyes has been alerted to the 24-year-old’s availability, but while the Serie A outfit are looking for a £15m permanent move the east London outfit only want to bring him to the London Stadium on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The Sun on Sunday says that the Hammers may be looking for a new striker before the transfer window slams shut on January 31 with Andy Carroll, Diafra Sakho and Javier Hernandez all being linked with moves away.

The Guardian reports that West Ham could lose out to Palace though, with their neighbours from the capital seemingly willing to pay Fiorentina’s asking price.

How has Babacar done this season?

He has done ok considering he is their back-up centre-forward.

The 24-year-old has scored four goals and provided a further assist in 15 Serie A appearances – all from the substitutes’ bench – and he is currently averaging a goal in the Italian top flight every 92 minutes.

According to WhoScored.com, the Senegalese striker’s main strengths are his shots from range and his finishing.

Would he be a good signing for West Ham?

It’s difficult to say.

His goal record for Fiorentina this season is certainly decent considering he hasn’t started a match in Serie A, but you would have to question whether that fact itself means he isn’t good enough to play every game for the start for the Irons in the Premier League.

They are still searching for that player that can score regularly throughout the season for them, and there is no guarantee that Boubacar would be the answer to their long-term issue.

A loan deal would be sensible in this case to see how the player adapts and the impact he has, but Crystal Palace are seemingly willing to take a risk on him.

Will they get him?

Everything is pointing to them not getting him right now, and Moyes will need to look elsewhere if he does lose any of his strikers before the end of the month.

In Focus: Tottenham seal Lucas Moura deal

According to RMC Sport, Tottenham Hotspur have sealed a deal for Paris Saint-Germain attacker Lucas Moura, who will join the club on a four-year contract next week.

What’s the story?

Lucas has been strongly linked with a move away from PSG during the January window, with Manchester United and Liverpool both believed to hold an interest.

However, according to RMC Sport, Tottenham have won the race to sign the Brazilian, who will sign a four-year contract with the London outfit upon his arrival early next week.

The report claims that Spurs will pay an initial fee of £25m for the 25-year-old, and he could make his debut for the club in next Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Man United.

Lucas has already been shown around Tottenham’s training ground, and he will boost a squad looking to secure a top-four finish in the final months of the 2017-18 campaign.

Is Lucas a good signing?

In the current market, signing a player of Lucas’ talent for £25m does appear to be a very good deal for Tottenham.

The 36-time Brazil international scored 18 times in all competitions for PSG last season, but has only netted once this term, and has not started a single league game for the French giants during the 2017-18 campaign.

The presence of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Angel di Maria at PSG has made it difficult for Lucas to earn regular football, but he is still a brilliant talent that could thrive in England.

A versatile attacker with blistering pace, Lucas certainly has the credentials to operate in the Premier League, and he will look to form a relationship with Harry Kane and Dele Alli in the final third of the field.

Tottenham are in desperate need of some fresh blood to boost their hopes of securing a Champions League finish once again, and the signing of Lucas for a relatively small fee could turn out to be a very good piece of business.

Everton fans react negatively to Keane rumours

According to The Mirror, Everton could sell centre-back Michael Keane at the end of the current season.

Keane, who is valued at £18m by transfermarkt.co.uk, joined Everton from Burnley in last summer’s transfer window, with the Toffees paying £25m to bring the 25-year-old to Goodison Park.

However, it has been reported that Everton boss Sam Allardyce has been unimpressed with the former Manchester United youngster, and would be prepared to sell for the right price when the summer transfer window opens for business.

Everton have been pretty rotten defensively this season, with Keane, Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka all being criticised.

It appears that the Everton fans are desperate to keep hold of Keane, however, with many reacting negatively to suggestions that the defender, who was so impressive for Burnley during the 2016-17 campaign, could be sold by Allardyce this summer.

5 tackles and a glorious goal: Exciting Brazilian midfielder could be perfect for Man City

While most of us were falling asleep watching Manchester United’s bore draw in Sevilla on Wednesday night, the football hipsters of the world were watching Shakhtar Donetsk deliver yet another sensational home performance, as two of the Champions League’s dark horses battled it out in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian side beat Italian giants Roma 2-1, a result that might have been even more flattering if not for several fantastic saves from Roma keeper Alisson. Shakhtar have four wins from four at home in the Champions League this season, including impressive victories over Manchester City and Napoli.

A major part of the club’s success in recent years has come from their Brazilian contingent, breeding exciting players like Willian, Alex Teixeira and Fernandinho before moving them along for a tidy profit. The next in Shakhtar’s remarkable production line of talented Brazilians is Fred.

According to some reports, the midfielder is set to join Manchester City this summer in a deal worth up to £50million. The Premier League leaders were strongly linked with a move for Fred in January, but it is reported that Shakhtar were unwilling to sell their star man while still in the Champions League.

[ad_pod ]

The 24 year-old defensive midfielder delivered yet another marvellous display on Wednesday night, scoring the winner with a free kick his compatriot Juninho would have been proud of. Blessed with great athleticism, the Brazilian is seen as a long-term replacement for 32 year-old Fernandinho, and with performances like Wednesday night’s it’s not hard to see why.

Similarly to Fernandinho, Fred is excellent at reading the game and sniffing out attacks before they even begin, registering an incredible five tackles against Roma (no other player had more than three). He’s not just a traditional defensive midfielder though, as he also registered four shots and one created chance. This is not atypical of the season Fred is having, averaging three dribbles, two shots and a key pass every game.

It is not often a player bosses a Champions League knockout game in the manner Fred did on Wednesday night, only to cap it off with a curling free kick to put his team half way to the next round. His defensive contribution is just the tip of the iceberg, and his eye for a pass and ability to break lines with his dribbling would certainly improve Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side.

The Brazilian midfielder has enjoyed a fantastic season and seems to be getting better every week. He may just be the perfect candidate to fill the ageing Fernandinho’s boots. So, Manchester City fans, would you back a £50million move for the 24 year-old? Let us know your thoughts.

Typical City’s cup exit gives everyone else hope

After calling for more protection for players (all players, he was careful to add, not just his own), it was almost inevitable that Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City would have their quadruple dream ended by a red card dished out for an overzealous tackle.

It was a meaty one-footed smash that Fabian Delph unleashed on his counterpart, a tackle with max fury unleashed upon Max Power. Was it a red card? There’ll be a debate. It was one-footed, even if the studs were showing; he took the ball, albeit with plenty of the man; and it wasn’t as if Delph was trying to stop a counter-attack, flying in dangerously with no chance of winning the ball. Yet it was excessive and put his opponent in a position where injury was possible – then again, don’t most slide tackles?

To the traditionalists, it was a fever dream played out in real life: the Premier League leaders dumped out of the FA Cup as the oldest competition sprinkled its magic dust over a football match again, crushing the sophisticated foreign manager in the process. And yet, to the traditionalists, a meaty one-footed challenge would not usually merit a red card – but these days traditionalists are hardly minded to give Manchester City of all clubs the benefit of the doubt.

Soccer Football – FA Cup Fifth Round – Wigan Athletic vs Manchester City – DW Stadium, Wigan, Britain – February 19, 2018 Manchester City’s Fabian Delph fouls Wigan Athletic’s Max Power and was subsequently shown a red card Action Images via Reuters/Carl Recine

The irony is that Guardiola was hoisted by his own petard, upended by the same booby-trapped item he’d left for the others, like a mischievous child playing Mario Kart who later forgets about his own prank. There’s no small dollop of irony attached to losing a game thanks to a red card doled out in the name of player protection, but there’s also a sense of burning injustice that marching weren’t given to Cardiff City’s Joe Bennett, Crystal Palace’s Jason Puncheon or Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli. It was Delph who received the punishment.

Then there’s an inescapable reality to deal with, too. This was a defeat which precludes City from winning an unprecedented quadruple. And although the FA Cup is rarely high on the top six clubs’ list of priorities at the start of the season, it is a bitter disappointment to lose out at this stage, with so much of the competition still to play.

But perhaps it’s also truly bitter because of what it points to. Guardiola’s City were so dominant before Christmas. Back then they were undoubtedly the best team in Europe, playing some of the absolute best football and blowing all competition away. Now, they’re still one of the best, but they’re not undisputedly the most in-form. The question now is if they’re peaked too soon.

The answer is almost certainly yes – City were so good in the autumn that there is almost no way they could be better in the spring. In that sense, they have peaked too soon. On the other hand, that doesn’t mean they can’t grind their way to trophies now when it really counts. There will be pressure on Sunday’s League Cup final now.

The price of setting the bar so high is that missing it looks like failure where others simply fall much shorter. That’s why it’s strange to see so much schadenfreude doing the rounds. Two trophies is the ultimate success for Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham this season. No one can do any better than that. For City, two trophies is the bare minimum now. After having the title wrapped up by Christmas, anything fewer than a pair of shiny cups paraded around Manchester in June will be seen as scant reward for the football they’ve played.

The upshot is that City must win on Sunday to make sure of that second trophy to go with the Premier League title, and after that throw everything into the Champions League.

This is a bitter disappointment, make no mistake. But the disappointment isn’t just that the perfect season is gone, it’s that the level of dominance achieved in the autumn is no longer possible. And that means City are no longer invincible.

Even if the league is gone, every other team now knows that City are beatable which is great news for the rest of the top six. Four of them can dream of Champions League glory, but the belief starts for Arsenal on Sunday.

Leeds United fans take aim at Middlesbrough over snow drama

Snow showers have been sweeping the nation this week, which has poured doubt over certain football fixtures.

On Friday night, Middlesbrough and Leeds United are due to go head to head at the Riverside Stadium in a Championship clash.

Leeds will be looking for back-to-back league wins for the first time since December, while Boro aim to stretch their unbeaten run to three games in a row.

However, there are concerns that the game could be postponed due to the disruptive weather.

[ad_pod ]

Boro released an update via their official website claiming that the pitch had been covered in snow overnight.

The club explained that they are “working hard” to ensure that tomorrow evening’s game goes ahead as planned, but nothing can be guaranteed, particularly as the snow is expected to get heavier in some parts of the UK over the next few days.

Leeds fans are, as expected, keeping track of Middlesbrough’s updates on Twitter, and some are not best pleased.

Allardyce planning summer shopping at Sevilla

Sam Allardyce claims he was at Manchester United’s Champions League clash with Sevilla to scout “a couple†of Sevilla players.

What’s the word?

Allardyce was spotted at Old Trafford on Tuesday as Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League at the hands of Sevilla.

Many fans speculated he was there to scout Manchester United players. Big Sam’s claims in his press conference today were quite the opposite.

Last year’s summer spending spree was disastrous for Everton, and it remains to be seen whether Allardyce will even still be at the club next season. If he is still there, it is surely a good sign for fans that he is shopping at a Champions League match.

[ad_pod ]

Who would be a good fit?

There are a number of players Allardyce could be have been keeping his eye on, and there are plenty of problem positions at Goodison right now.

Steven N’Zonzi is a player on a lot of fans minds. The French midfielder had a pretty forgettable time at Stoke but has excelled since moving to Sevilla. Valued at £27million by Transfermarkt, the towering defensive midfielder would be a pricey move for the Toffees, but would form one formidable partnership with Idrissa Gueye.

Perhaps the biggest problem at Everton right now is the lack of a solid partnership in the heart of the defence, evidenced by some of the awful away results this season. French centre back Clément Lenglet may go some way to fixing that if he was one of the players on Allardyce’s radar.

The 22 year-old defender has drawn lots of plaudits for his play in Spain this season, and could potentially help Michael Keane find form and build a long-term partnership.

Wissam Ben Yedder could be another blip on the radar; the French striker scored both Sevilla goals at Old Trafford and would be a vast improvement on the current attacking ranks at Goodison.
