Marseille in meltdown: Adrien Rabiot, Roberto De Zerbi and the post-match punch-up that has threatened to destroy the French giants' dressing room

The chaos that followed last Friday's dismal defeat at Rennes is likely to lead to two players leaving the club

Fights between team-mates are more frequent than most fans think. Footballers are, by their very nature, competitive characters and emotions regularly run high at the very highest level, especially when under-pressure players are competing for major honours – and starting spots.

It's not uncommon, then, for arguments to break out on the training pitch or in the dressing room. In the past, we've even famously seen colleagues come to blows on the pitch, with Kieron Dyer versus Lee Bowyer probably the most famous example in Premier League history.

Of course, such spats can sometimes be a good thing for a squad, as they have the capacity to clear the air by allowing for a release of tension in a struggling team. It would be difficult, though, to portray Marseille's post-match meltdown on Friday as anything other than a very troubling development for Roberto De Zerbi and his players.

Indeed, the incident is being taken so seriously by the French club that Adrien Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe are both expected to be sold for their respective role in the dressing-room row in Rennes, while legitimate questions are also now being asked over the coach's ability to restore order at Marseille…

AFPOpening-round setback

De Zerbi's first season in charge at the Stade Velodrome was typically turbulent but nonetheless encouraging, with the outspoken Italian leading OM back into the Champions League via a creditable runners-up finish in Ligue 1. Given the club backed the manager in the market during the summer, making a plethora of exciting signings, including Angel Gomes, Facundo Medina and Igor Paixao, there was actual talk of Marseille being able to mount a legitimate title challenge this time around to perennial champions Paris Saint-Germain.

However, optimism has given way to outrage after the abysmal season-opening loss at Roazhon Park. Despite seeing their hosts reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal just after the half-hour mark, Marseille failed dismally to break down Rennes and were hit by a stunning sucker-punch in the 91st minute, when an unmarked Ludovic Blas raced away to score the game's only goal.

AdvertisementAFP'We have small balls'

As if that weren't bad enough, all hell then broke loose when Marseille's disgruntled players returned to the visiting dressing room.

The precise nature of the clashes remains a subject of great debate. However, journalists waiting in the nearby mixed zone claim to have heard a major commotion in the Marseille dressing room allegedly caused by a confrontation between Adrien Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe, who some sources claim actually struck his team-mate after being accused of a lack of effort.

A disgusted De Zerbi also reportedly told his players, "The others beat us on the pitch, and we come in here and fight among ourselves. You know what that means? That we have small balls. In Marseille, we need to have big ones."

AFP'Unacceptable behaviour'

According to , De Zerbi also warned his warring players, "This is the last time this will happen." And the full significance of that statement would only become clear afterwards.

Although both Rabiot and Rowe were promptly suspended for their role in the dressing-room dust-up, meaning neither player was allowed to train with their team-mates on Monday morning, it was thought that they would be quickly welcomed back into the fold – most likely after making a donation to the club's foundation as a form of punishment.

However, according to , De Zerbi made it clear to sporting director Mehdi Benatia, who had helped the coach break up the scuffle, and president Pablo Longoria that he no longer wanted either player at the club. As a result, Marseille placed both Rabiot and Rowe on the transfer list on Monday evening "due to unacceptable behaviour in the dressing room after the match against Stade Rennais FC, in consultation with the coaching staff and in accordance with the club's internal code of conduct."

Getty'Incomprehensible'

Even though Rowe only completed a permanent move to Marseille during the summer, the forward – who scored the winning goal for England Under-21s in their European Championship final back in June – appears to have no issue with moving on and has apparently already agreed to join Serie A side Bologna.

However, Rabiot and his representatives are less than impressed with how the entire episode has been handled. The France international's mother and agent, Veronique, is said to be unhappy with Benatia's lack of communication and clarity on the matter, as well as reports that De Zerbi cited a perceived "lack of commitment" as another reason for getting rid of Rabiot.

It's certainly surprising that the Marseille boss is seemingly so keen to sell the midfielder, given Rabiot was one of the team's most influential players last season and considered such a key figure within the squad.

As Rabiot's lawyer, Romuald Palao, told , "It's incomprehensible. Adrien has been extremely involved in the Marseille project for almost a year, and he’s very attached to it. Adrien thought that when he came back after the weekend, everyone would have moved on and resumed training. So, when we learned that he was on the transfer list, we were clearly stunned."

Arsenal are reportedly winning the race to sign the Leverkusen centre-back but according to Rolfes, no formal offer has been tabled and the Bundesliga outfit want to keep the 23-year-old this summer. A move for him may be contingent on Jakub Kiwior leaving the Emirates, too.

Rolfes told RTL/ntv and sport.de: "We still haven’t received an official offer from any club, so he’s our player. That’s the status quo. He knows that we value him highly and would like to see him continue with us."

Arsenal have already spent nearly €300 million (£258m) on players so far this summer but reports that Hincapie was set to join Mikel Arteta's team appear to be wide of the mark. The Gunners are aiming to end their 21-year wait for a Premier League title but they may have to do it without the Leverkusen star.

Tom Heaton's Man Utd return?! First-team stars want Ruben Amorim to draft in third-choice goalkeeper after Andre Onana & Altay Bayindir howlers

Alleged doubts about Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir from within Man Utd's squad have led to a belief that Tom Heatson finally deserves an opportunity.

A report from claims that some member of the first-team squad think Heaton has performed better in training than Onana and Bayindir, both of whom are ahead of the veteran in the goalkeeping pecking order. Those players now think Ruben Amorim ought to throw caution to the wind and hand the 39-year-old the opportunity to prove that in a game. Unease surrounding Onana and Bayindir was already developing.

AdvertisementGetty THE BIGGER PICTURE

Onana's pre-season injury saw Amorim go with Bayindir when the Premier League season began earlier this month, only for the Turkiye international to make a costly error that led to the only goal in a narrow defeat against Arsenal. He also came under fire after the win over Burnley, prompting another staunch defence from the head coach. But, even after returning to fitness, Onana wasn't recalled, except for the horror show that ensued against Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup. United are thought to be in the market for a new goalkeeper before the transfer deadline, in talks over a deal for Senne Lammens and lining up Emiliano Martinez as a back-up option.

DID YOU KNOW?

Occupying the role of a seldom used third choice goalkeeper since he returned to Old Trafford in 2021, Heaton hasn't made a competitive first-team appearance in two-and-a-half years and his most recent run as a regular starter came with Aston Villa in the first half of the 2019-20 campaign. But he is a popular member of the United squad and is thought to be well liked around the club.

The Red Devils don't play again until after the September international break, so calls for Heaton to start ahead of Onana and Bayindir would only be relevant if neither Lammens nor Martinez, or indeed anyone else, is signed before the transfer window closes. Babar Azam, Bismah Maroof awarded Pakistan's civilian honours

Babar, 28, becomes the youngest person to ever receive the Sitara-e-Imtiaz

Danyal Rasool23-Mar-2023Pakistan captain Babar Azam has received the Sitara-e-Imtiaz, the third-highest civilian honour in Pakistan. It was conferred onto him at a ceremony in Lahore on Pakistan Day, which is a national holiday in the country. Babar, 28, becomes the youngest person to ever receive the honour, beating out another cricketer, Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed. Sarfaraz was awarded the Sitara-e-Imtiaz in Karachi in 2018, when he was 31. Former Pakistan women’s captain, Bismah Maroof, meanwhile, has been awarded the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, the fourth-highest honour. Masood Jan, a former blind cricker for Pakistan, received a Pride of Performance Award. The Pakistan government announced last year on August 14, Pakistan’s Independence Day, that it would give Babar the award for his achievements in the field of cricket. He joins a number of former cricketers who were given this award, with Javed Miandad, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Yousuf, Younis Khan, Shahid Afridi, Saeed Ajmal and Misbah-ul-Haq also honoured in this way.Babar called the award “an immense honour” dedicating it to “his parents, fans and the people of Pakistan”. He was congratulated by a host of cricketers past and present, including Kamran Akmal, Ajmal, Shahnawaz Dahani, Saim Ayub and Mohammad Haris.

Since making his international debut in 2015, Babar has gone on to become one of the finest cricketers of his generation, and ranks among the greatest batters in Pakistan’s history. His career ODI average of 59.41 is the highest among players with at least 2000 runs, and his 17 ODI hundreds already place him second in the all-time list in Pakistan. He was a part of the side that won the Champions Trophy in 2017, and after a rocky start, has established himself as an elite Test batter. His 3696 runs in the format include nine hundreds and an average of 48.63. He is also the leading run-scorer for Pakistan in T20Is with 3355 runs at an average of 41.41 and a strike rate of 127.80, and has scored two of Pakistan’s four T20I hundreds. He was named captain of the ODI and T20I sides in 2020, before taking over the Test captaincy in 2021. He was named the ICC Men’s Cricketer of 2022, as well as the captain of the ODI Team of that year.Maroof becomes the second female cricketer to receive the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, following in the footsteps of Sana Mir. She said she was “humbled and honoured”, in particular dedicating the award to her father who “stood by me through thick and thin.” Maroof, 31, assumed the Pakistan captaincy in 2013, retaining it until 2020 before she took a break from cricket to give birth to her daughter. She assumed the captaincy after returning, and led the side during the recently concluded T20 World Cup, before stepping down earlier this month.

Bruno Fernandes was right – Ruben Amorim's under proper pressure now! Winners and losers as Man Utd's Europa League embarrassment leaves Red Devils boss in Sir Jim Ratcliffe's crosshairs while Ange Postecoglou makes Tottenham's managerial decision much more difficult

The Portuguese had been relying on winning the competition to make amends for his torrid time in charge, but now he has serious questions to answer

On the eve of the Europa League final, Ruben Amorim was asked whether it was strange that his opposite number Ange Postecoglou was under huge pressure at Tottenham while the Manchester United manager was not. Before he could answer, Bruno Fernandes hilariously interjected: "Who told you he's not? He is!" Well, he certainly is now, after United bungled their one shot at redemption by losing 1-0 to Spurs in Bilbao.

United were not just left with the pain of watching Tottenham lift the trophy in front of them, as they also had to contemplate the fact they had wasted a golden chance to return to the Champions League. And for only the second time in the last 36 years, they will have to make do without European football altogether next season.

The plus side for Amorim is that he will have more time to work on the training ground, which will be crucial for the players to properly understand his methods and master his 3-4-2-1 formation. The negative, however, is that he has no riposte and no excuse for overseeing the club's worst domestic season in half a century, and will have to explain to Sir Jim Ratcliffe why the club will not be getting the £100 million ($134m) pay day the part-owner had hoped for.

But while United were counting the cost of their defeat, Tottenham were savouring their first piece of silverware in 17 years and shedding the 'Spursy' tag that has dogged them for so long. They are, though, now left with a huge dilemma: move on from Ange Postecoglou or give the Australian another chance as a reward for ending their trophy drought?

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from San Mames…

Getty ImagesWINNER: Ange Postecoglou

Very few managers spend their press conference before a major final discussing their imminent sacking, and even fewer end up insisting that they are not "a clown". But Postecoglou has had the last laugh, whatever happens this summer.

The Australian may have presided over Tottenham's worst-ever Premier League season, but he is also the club's first coach to win a major trophy since Juande Ramos in 2008, and the first to deliver a European trophy in 41 years. It is a legacy he will be very happy with, and so too will Tottenham fans, who have long lived by the words of their legendary coach Bill Nicholson, who famously declared "the game is all about glory".

Postecoglou fiercely defended himself the day before the game, showing that he is above all a human being with emotions and feelings and that he does not take kindly to being put down constantly. On the pitch on Wednesday, his side showed how to fight.

The coach made some bold decisions, above all benching his captain Son Heung-min, and in doing so he showed the courage Mauricio Pochettino had lacked with Harry Kane in the 2019 Champions League final when the striker had just returned from injury. Sure, the performance was anything but the buccaneering football Postecoglou is known for, but he got the job done while keeping his promise to win a trophy in his second season, as he has done throughout his long career in dugouts around the world.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportLOSER: Ruben Amorim

Amorim gave mixed messaging before the final about whether or not Champions League football would be beneficial to United or not, while he also considered the consequences of losing when he admitted: "It is going to be really bad, I don’t want to use that as an excuse and the patience of the fans and you guys next year if we don’t win. It is going to be on the limit."

Well, he better get used to it. Amorim will now face the same scrutiny Postecoglou endured all season and the questions about whether or not he should remain in charge will ramp up. The Europa League campaign was the only thing keeping United's season interesting, and now that Harry Maguire's heroics against Lyon and Mason Mount's Federico Macheda moment against Athletic Club were all for nothing, Amorim's Premier League record will be pored over – and there is nowhere to hide.

He has won just six of 26 Premier League games in charge, has not tasted victory since beating Leicester City in March and has only beaten teams that ended up relegated since January. Amorim has a lower points-per-game ratio in the English top-flight than Paul Jewell, the man who presided over the league's worst ever campaign at Derby County. When Amorim took charge United were seven points from the top four; now they are 27 points adrift.

The former Sporting CP coach would rather have taken the job this summer than be parachuted into the middle of the season, but he ultimately chose to accept the role and has to live with the consequences. It is hard not to contrast his miserable job with that of Oliver Glasner, who took over at Crystal Palace midway through last season, changed the style of play while adopting a 3-4-2-1 formation and got almost instant results before winning the FA Cup just a year later.

Amorim did at least front up and admit after the game that he had "nothing to show to the fans." He also made a striking promise, saying: "If the board and fans decide I'm not the right guy, then I will leave tomorrow without any compensation." He might end up regretting that pledge…

Getty Images SportWINNER: Brennan Johnson

In the aftermath of the most important goal of his career, it should not be forgotten that earlier this season Brennan Johnson deactivated his Instagram account amid a torrent of online abuse following Tottenham's defeat by Arsenal in September. The north London derby was the lowest point of a difficult start to the season for a player who had never really justified his £48m ($64m) million transfer fee from Nottingham Forest the previous year. But now he has more than paid it off.

Spurs' return to the Champions League is worth roughly £100m, more than double Johnson's transfer fee, but it is worth far more than that to Tottenham's long-suffering fanbase. The Wales international will be remembered as the man who scored the goal that ended their 17-wait for silverware, and will also go down as their top scorer this season, his match-winner being his 18th goal in all competitions.

Johnson's father, David, began his career at United, but his son has been the scourge of the Red Devils this season. He scored the first goal in September's thumping 3-0 win at Old Trafford when Erik ten Hag was still in charge, and now he has made Amorim's job a whole lot harder. But his place in Tottenham's history is far more significant, and it is assured forever.

Getty Images SportLOSER: Bruno Fernandes

Fernandes has had the thankless task of trying to carry this dysfunctional United team on his back this season, but on Wednesday he couldn't find the strength to go one more time. His flat performance was arguably the most disappointing aspect of this lacklustre United display, and while fans have come to expect little from other members of the squad, they have continued to see their captain as a superhero, the man who always saves the day. Here, though, his powers were faulty.

His only notable effort on goal was his effort which Guglielmo Vicario saved comfortably in the first half, and he was unable to supply his team-mates with chances, save for a few promising passes to Amad Diallo. Fernandes has now lost two European finals with United after the 2021 Europa League defeat to Villarreal on penalties, and in five-and-a-half seasons at Old Trafford he has just two trophies to show for his efforts, the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

Before the game, Fernandes had spoken of his natural desire to win the trophy, but he also made a statement which has extra significance in light of the defeat: "It won't change the past for us but it can affect the future." The captain was talking about the impact of United getting back into the Champions League and the players they would be able to attract, but it also is worth reflecting on the impact the defeat could have on him.

There have been growing reports of his agent meeting with representatives from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, and a defeat of this magnitude and the reality that he will not be involved in the Champions League (or indeed any European football) might well make Fernandes take those offers more seriously.

U.S. international Matt Turner could be back on the market as Ligue 1 side Lyon are reportedly looking into canceling their rumored $9.42 million move for the goalkeeper.

According to L'Equipe, Lyon need to reduce their wage bill and ensure economic stability to ensure they remain in the French top flight. The outlet reports owner John Textor has appointed a lawyer to revoke Turner's contract at their hearing with the National Council of the French Football Association.

Turner, who made just three club appearances last season while on loan with Crystal Palace, needs a move get meaningful playing time and to maintain his challenge for the U.S. No. 1 job.

L'Equipe reports the same lawyer has already reached out to Nottingham Forest to reconsider the commitment for the goalkeeper's sale. Lucas Perri is the club's current No. 1 option at the position, and with no sale imminent, Lyon are conscious of DNCG's demand of prudent spending.

The spend for Turner to potentially serve as No. 2 isn't prudent by those guidelines. With Turner's future again uncertain, a return to MLS could be a potential option. The American previously mentioned he's open to coming back stateside.

"Yeah, I think I'd always be open to coming back home, but I've had a lot of positive talks with a lot of different clubs," Turner said.
