Muslic takes over as Plymouth bossPlymouth beat Brentford in FA Cup clashGives inspiring speech after matchFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Muslic was named as Plymouth boss earlier this month, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal to succeed Manchester United legend Rooney, who was sacked after leaving the Pilgrims at the bottom of the Championship standings.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Muslic will start his tenure with Plymouth Argyle following a major bang as the Pilgrims defeated Premier League side Brentford 1-0 in the third round of the FA Cup under caretaker manager Kevin Nancekivell. Following the major victory, Plymouth posted the Austrian manager's awe-inspiring speech after taking on his first match as the Pilgrims' head coach.

WHAT MUSLIC SAID

Speaking to the squad in the dressing room after the clash against Brentford, Muslic said: "Good to be here, very good to be here. Normally, I would always address my words firstly to the team. But, this morning, I will address my first words to Nance [Kevin Nancekivell].

"Your courage, your commitment, your selflessness is an inspiration. There are moments in life and moments on the football pitch where the heat is on, the pressure is on and people just disappear, run away and hide, other people like Nance step up. That's courage, balls.

"When I saw the celebrations after the game, it was pure, it was from the heart. Not fake, pure and from the heart. Goosebumps all over my body!

"I know it has been difficult for you over the last weeks, suffering, struggling. It's part of our job. You are professional football players, it's not easy being a professional football player.

"We have to perform day in, day out, every single weekend, and we are an object. We don't have a private life, they (outsiders) can do what they want with us. They can destroy us every single day and every single game, that's why it's difficult to be a professional football player. That's why we are here, because it's hard.

"Nothing in the next weeks will be easy for us, no problem! Let's face this challenge in front of us with commitment, with heart, with togetherness, because you impressed me against Brentford.

"Going there, and delivering a performance the way you did. F*cking hell, well done. Showing this passion, this conviction, this togetherness, this will be the ingredients we need to face the challenge in front of us, no doubt. And it's going to be hard, no problem."

AFPWHAT NEXT FOR MUSLIC?

Plymouth do indeed have a very tough challenge on their hands after the start of the Championship season they suffered under Rooney. Nonetheless, Muslic has remained positive that the squad are ready to battle back from the bottom of the standings. They are only three points from safety, though, and face Oxford United next.

Lost the ball 19x: Ten Hag must drop 4/10 star who cost Man Utd vs Twente

It was another uninspiring performance from Manchester United against FC Twente of the Netherlands in their Europa League opener on Wednesday night. Erik ten Hag’s side were rather limp, in truth, and they could only stutter to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils were lacklustre in front of goal. United managed 19 shots, but could only test the goalkeeper on five occasions, with seven of their shots missing the target altogether, as per Sofascore.

Erik ten Hag

A superb finish from Christian Eriksen gave United the lead 35 minutes into the game, but they could only muster an expected goals tally of 1.27xG. It was the Dane’s error that led to Twente’s goal, with Sam Lammers equalising after 68 minutes. The visitors applied some pressure thereafter on the United goal and managed to stand firm, not allowing Ten Hag’s men to breach their steadfast defence.

Late subs could not swing the result in United’s favour, and it is another disappointing result in Europe. The Red Devils have won just one of their last nine continental affairs, as per Andy Mitten. There were certainly some poor performances on the night once again.

Eriksen’s stats vs. FC Twente

One of those players was Danish international midfielder Eriksen. Despite his goal, the former Inter man struggled at times off the ball, and it was his costly mistake that led to the Dutch side’s equaliser.

It is worth mentioning his superb strike just past the 30-minute mark. He got on the end of a loose ball in the penalty box, simply running onto it and lashing it into the top corner of the Twente goal, a great finish.

However, his lack of control of the ball led to Twente nabbing possession from United and running through to equalise. His mistake probably weighed in on the 6/10 rating from The Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, although he did praise him for being ‘prudent with the ball’.

His stats from the game reflected the mixed evening, too. Whilst the Dane retained the ball well for the majority of the match, with a pass accuracy of 93%, and created three chances, he was poor off the ball. He failed to win his sole tackle, won just one from three duels and lost the ball for their goal.

With that being said, it was an even more disappointing night for Bruno Fernandes, who once again looked off the boil.

Fernandes’ stats vs. FC Twente

Last Saturday’s trip to Selhurst Park was not Fernandes’ best game, struggling against a good Crystal Palace side as he lost possession on 34 occasions. Frustratingly, the 30-year-old could not get back on track against the Dutch side at Old Trafford.

The United skipper was wasteful in possession once again, and, ever the spark for his side, could not find the shot or pass which made a difference. He did come close late in the second half, but his shot from range was always bending away from goal.

His stats were reflective of such a frustrating evening for the United captain. He managed to complete just 75% of his passes and lost the ball a frustrating 19 times. He also struggled out of possession, winning just five from ten ground duels.

Fernandes’ performance earned him a 4/10 rating from Luckhurst, who explained that the United skipper was ‘sloppy again with the ball’, as he had been at Palace. It was a scathing review from the journalist, who claimed the Portugal star got ‘worse in the second half’.

That viewpoint was echoed by a certain Mark Goldbridge, who dubbed the playmaker as “dreadful” and questioned the decision not to withdraw him in the second half.

The Red Devils’ number eight, along with his teammates, have a chance to get back to winning ways this weekend at Old Trafford, where they host Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon.

Whether Fernandes should be involved from the start in that clash is another matter, however, with it looking as if Ten Hag may need to boldly drop his skipper on the evidence of his recent displays.

Imagine him & Havertz: Arsenal chasing Henry-esque ÂŁ50m-rated star

Mikel Arteta will be hoping that it will be third time lucky for Arsenal this season as they look to secure a first Premier League title since the invincible campaign of 2003/04.

The Gunners missed out on top spot by just five points during 2022/23, before only having a two-point gap to Manchester City last season – missing out on the title despite leading the way for the vast majority of the campaign.

However, the North London outfit strengthened the squad during the recent transfer window, signing players in various positions to provide added quality and squad depth in key areas.

Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino are just two players who starred at Euro 2024 before securing moves to the Emirates, with the latter only making two substitute appearances after an injury setback.

Despite their investment, one player who was at the club last season has continued his excellent form from 2023/24 into the new campaign – cementing his place as a regular starter under Arteta.

Kai Havertz’s stats in 2024/25

After registering a total of 21 goals and assists during his debut campaign with the Gunners, Kai Havertz has wasted no time in showcasing his talents once again during the current season.

The 25-year-old, who joined from London rivals Chelsea for ÂŁ65m last summer, raised eyebrows over his move after his mixed stint at Stamford Bridge.

However, the move gave the German international a new lease of life, as demonstrated last season, but he’s made a stellar start to the new campaign under Arteta’s guidance.

Havertz already has six goals and one assist in his opening ten outings of 2024/25, with only Bukayo Saka registering more goal contributions in all competitions so far.

He’s now scored in seven successive games at the Emirates, showcasing what a good decision it was by Arteta and the hierarchy to prise the German away from Chelsea.

He could be further aided in his attempts in attacking areas, with the club targeting another German to bolster their attacking options in January.

Arsenal battling to sign European star

The Gunners’ recent progression has seen a return to Champions League nights in North London, with huge praise needing to be given to Arteta for transforming the squad.

His side remain unbeaten in the competition after a win against PSG, whilst drawing away at Atalanta in their opening game of the tournament back in September.

However, according to reports in Spain, Arsenal have entered the race to sign Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane, but face competition from fellow Premier League side Newcastle United.

The 28-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer, would be up for grabs for free next year, ensuring the Bundesliga outfit would lose out after splashing out ÂŁ55m his signature back in 2020.

Sane, who’s previously been compared to “Thierry Henry in full flow” by Rio Ferdinand, has scored 49 times in 179 games for the German outfit, but could leave after featuring for 32 minutes in the league this season.

Despite his lack of action, the Henry-esque winger is still valued at £50m as per Transfermarkt, but given his contract situation, it’s likely a potential January deal for his services would be well below his current market value.

Leroy Sane

His record at the very top of European football could make him a stellar addition to Arteta’s side, potentially allowing him to form a deadly partnership with compatriot Havertz in North London.

Whilst he may not dislodge Saka in a starting role, his pace and talent could see him provide that added depth that the Spaniard has been searching for as he looks to end the club’s two-decade wait for a top-division title.

Gary Stead on T20 WC: Main goal is to get to the semi-finals

NZ coach feels “there are six-seven teams that could win this tournament”

Deivarayan Muthu05-Oct-2021Having won the inaugural World Test Championship earlier in June, New Zealand now have the rare chance to clinch another world title in the same year as they prepare for the forthcoming T20 World Cup in the UAE. Head coach Gary Stead said that New Zealand aren’t distracted by that prospect and that their main focus is to first qualify for the semi-finals.Related

“Every tournament you go in, you go in with high hopes, hope to win games and put yourself in a position to achieve that,” Stead said during a virtual media interaction after arriving in the UAE. “I guess our first one is focusing on one game at a time, but the main goal is to get to that semi-finals stage and if you’re there, you’ll know that you’re only two wins away from a title. We’re in a tough pool, I genuinely think there are six-seven teams that could win this tournament, and I guess that’s good for world cricket as well.”New Zealand are placed in Group 2, which also includes former champions India and Pakistan. They will first run into Pakistan in Sharjah on October 26 and there could potentially be some tension around the clash after New Zealand recently called off their limited-overs tour of Pakistan, citing security concerns. Newly appointed PCB chairman Ramiz Raja was particularly critical of New Zealand’s abrupt pullout, promising to avenge the cancellation when Pakistan face them at the World Cup.Stead, however, downplayed the chatter around the game. “I’m not sure if there’s any more tension on it from our perspective,” he said. “Obviously, what happened in Pakistan was sad for Pakistan cricket, their players and also our players who missed out on that opportunity as well. We can’t change what has happened there; all we can do is, I guess, prepare for the tournament, and we face Pakistan first up. I’m sure it will be an exciting game. We’ve always had good games with Pakistan cricket and this one will be no different.”Stead said that New Zealand are also wary of the challenging conditions they could face in the UAE. They will play two games in Sharjah, where pitches have become sluggish after being relaid and as many in Dubai, where tracks have slowed down at the fag end of this IPL, before rounding off their league stage with the match against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi. It helps New Zealand that ten players in their World Cup squad are currently part of the IPL in the UAE and the likes of Martin Guptill and Ish Sodhi, who had arrived in the UAE earlier from Pakistan, have been training with Thilan Samaraweera.

“We’ve taken it [mental health] very seriously and tried to be upfront with our players and stuff around how we sit with it.”Gary Stead, NZ head coach

“I’ve watched a fair bit of the IPL,” Stead said. “It looks like there are three different surfaces and even as the tournament progresses, there seems to be the odd bit of rogue score – a very high-scoring game in Abu Dhabi, where 190 got chased down but the norm has been anywhere between 120 through to 150 mark. With the three grounds, I guess, they will provide different options and opportunities that we need to consider as well. We will certainly be calling on the expertise of and knowledge of those guys that have been playing in the IPL – what they can add to our intel as well.”Stead stressed that the mental well-being of the players and staff is something that is of utmost priority for New Zealand. Stead, the rest of the support staff, and wicketkeeper-batter Devon Conway are currently in isolation for six days before they could head out and train.”We’ve taken it [mental health] very seriously and tried to be upfront with our players and stuff around how we sit with it,” Stead said. “We’ve also brought John Quinn with us to look after the well-being of our staff and players who are over here at the World Cup and then John will go home and will be replaced by Rod Corbin – they are guys within our mental skills network of providers back home. Those guys are there just to make sure they are checking in with all our players and staff and making sure we are taking that really, really seriously as well.”When you sit in a room for long periods of time, it’s not always that easy. It’s perhaps a novelty for the first day or two, but then when you look at the same four walls time and time again, it can be difficult. That’s, I guess, the world we live in at the moment, but also understanding that we’re in a privileged position of being able to tour around the world as well and play these World Cups, which is still exciting for us.”As part of New Zealand’s plans to rotate players and even staff over the winter, Stead himself was given a break for the tours to Bangladesh and Pakistan, with Wellington Firebirds head coach Glenn Pocknall standing in for him. Stead was pleased with the progress of the fringe players who stepped up in spin-friendly conditions and ran a near-full-strength Bangladesh side close before eventually losing the series 3-2.”It was definitely a different experience [watching the Bangladesh tour from the outside],” Stead said. “I’m really proud of the way the guys played over there. That was a relatively inexperienced Black Caps team that went over there when you consider what we normally had and to be able to take two games off a real quality side was encouraging, and to be in the running for all five matches was also very encouraging. So pleased with the development of the team there. We’ve planned out well in advance because of the well-being aspect of all our players and this was going to be the way we would tour for the winter. I guess, no surprises from our sense of how it’s playing out.”

Yilmaz to miss Rangers vs FCSB alongside Danilo despite step up in recovery

As they look to bounce back from shock defeat at the hands of Kilmarnock, Rangers will have to cope without one sidelined player once again against FCSB in the Europa League.

Rangers injury news

After watching on as Celtic finally slipped up by drawing against Aberdeen, Rangers had the opportunity to cut the gap on their Old Firm rivals to just two points in the Scottish Premiership. In what sums up the Gers’ season so far, however, they could not take advantage and instead found themselves on the losing side courtesy of Marley Watkins’ late winner for Kilmarnock.

Rangers boss Philippe Clement now reportedly finds himself under increasing pressure to turn things around, adding to the importance of Thursday’s Europa League clash against FCSB.

Rangers' Philippe Clement watched 18 y/o starlet score two goals this week

Rangers are seriously struggling this season.

The Gers’ visitors enter Ibrox in fine form on the European stage, having secured six points from six by defeating RFS and PAOK. Now, the Romanian side will be looking to pick up their biggest victory yet up against the Scottish giants.

Rangers are there to be beaten too, especially given that they’re yet to be handed a boost on the injury front. As confirmed by Clement and relayed by Rangers Review, Ridvan Yilmaz has been ruled out of facing FCSB alongside Danilo despite the fact that he has stepped up his recovery by returning to first-team training.

The right-back has been out injured with a hamstring problem for the last 12 games and whilst he is on his way back, is not ready to return as early as tonight. Danilo, meanwhile, has missed the last five games but is also now on his way back to an important return.

Clement told reporters via Rangers Review: “Yesterday. I was at the second team game, watching the young guys, watching Danilo back scoring a goal and getting back in shape. He still has a long way to go.”

Then asked about Yilmaz, Clement said: “He’s not yet in the selection because Ridvan trained now for the second time with the first team. He came out of a serious injury and it is too fast to put him in a game but he is in a positive way.”

Rangers need return of "fighter" Yilmaz

Rangers desperately need some consistency and the return of Yilmaz should only aid their bid to return to their best form. Competing against Jefte for the left-back spot, Yilmaz will be gunning to earn his place back from the Brazilian before keeping hold of it once and for all.

At just 20 years old and only arriving in the summer transfer window, Jefte cannot be the only left-back that Clement relies on. The depth that Yilmaz’s return should provide, alongside the competition for places, may well prove to be key as the fixtures begin to come thick and fast.

Although he’s not quite ready for a return, the left-back, who was dubbed a “fighter” by Clement last season, is at least on his way back from a lengthy injury blow for those at Ibrox.

Harvey Hosein retires from cricket due to long-term concussion

Wicketkeeper claimed 11 catches on debut for Derbyshire in 2014, aged 18

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Oct-2021Harvey Hosein, the Derbyshire wicketkeeper-batter, has announced his retirement from professional cricket after missing much of the 2021 season due to a series of concussions.Hosein, 25, made his first-class debut for Derbyshire against Surrey in 2014, at the age of 18, and starred from the outset, claiming seven first-innings catches, and a club record 11 for the match, in an eight-wicket victory. However, his progress was hampered this season, with four recent concussions, and two instances in which he had to leave the field due to concussion protocols. The latter incident, a blow to the helmet while batting against Leicestershire in the Royal London Cup in July, ruled him out for the remainder of the season. And now, following assessment and management from Derbyshire’s medical team and a specialist consultant multidisciplinary team, Hosein has chosen to step away from cricket with immediate effect to prevent any possible future injury.”Retiring early from the game has been the hardest moment I’ve faced in my professional career,” Hosein said. “I have been lucky enough to enjoy eight professional seasons as a homegrown player; an ambition I held since joining the Club at the age of 12.”I am extremely grateful for the support I have received during my time at Derbyshire and would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone at the Club, both on and off the field.”This is not how I envisaged or wanted to leave the game; however, I have made lifelong memories during the past 13 years at Derbyshire.”The loyalty and support that I received from Members and supporters is something I will always cherish – it has meant a huge amount to me over the years.”I look forward to joining them in supporting the Club as I look to the future and a new career path.”Hosein played in a total of 83 matches for Derbyshire, scoring 2,768 runs, with a top score of 138 not out, while he also claimed 156 dismissals. He will continue to receive support from the club, as well as the Professional Cricketers’ Association, as he works towards an Investment Management Certificate qualification, and a new career in finance.Ryan Duckett, Derbyshire’s chief executive, said: “I’m deeply disappointed for Harvey and as a Club, it’s unfortunate to lose a talented and home-grown cricketer, but players’ health must always come first.”There are risks associated with any contact sport and cricket is no different, particularly at this level. The Club’s medical staff and Harvey himself have followed the ECB’s concussion protocols thoroughly and there is no doubt that in doing so have in all likelihood prevented further injury.”Harvey has acted professionally throughout his time with Derbyshire and has been a great ambassador for the Club and the sport. He’s an intelligent young man with a bright future ahead of him. On behalf of the Club, I wish him all the very best and we will support him in any way we can as he begins a career outside of cricket.”
