Liverpool working to sign their own Gvardiol after £30m Mamardashvili deal

Liverpool are reportedly working on a mystery second signing in the remaining days of the transfer window, coming in alongside Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Liverpool agree Mamardashvili deal

It has been a curiously quiet summer at Anfield on the transfer front, with many supporters left frustrated that not a single player has arrived to bolster Arne Slot's options. The new head coach has started impressively, winning his opening two Premier League matches, but there is a feeling that failure to bring in new faces could prevent his side from mounting a genuine trophy challenge.

It does look as though one piece of business is about to be confirmed at least, with Mamardashvili reportedly agreeing a move to Liverpool from Valencia, spending the 2024/25 season on loan at his current club before providing competition for Alisson this time next year.

He will set the Reds back around £30m in what is a somewhat strange investment, given Alisson's clear number one status and recent comments which reinforced his love for the club.

The 23-year-old impressed hugely for Georgia at Euro 2024 however, standing out as one of the leading goalkeepers in the tournament, having made a total of 30 saves, which is the second-highest tally in the history of the competition.

Replacing Alisson is going to be an almost impossible task for Liverpool, considering the Brazilian is not only one of the best 'keepers of his generation but also among the finest stoppers to have ever played the game, proving to be a remarkably consistent performer since arriving from Roma in 2018.

Liverpool now chasing second defensive signing

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are working on signing an unnamed defender alongside Mamardashvili this week, bringing in a player who can provide competition for Virgil van Dijk. The Reds are believed to want a "centre-back who can also operate at full-back", putting pressure on Andy Robertson at the same time, and will look to get a deal done in January if they run out of time this week.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool supporters are sure to be encouraged by this update, with a young central defender who can also play at left-back making complete sense to come in, acting as their own version of Manchester City ace Josko Gvardiol, who has been a revelation for Pep Guardiola's side since joining from RB Leipzig.

Van Dijk is now 33 and Robertson is 30, so both players will need to see their minutes managed carefully by Slot as the season goes on, and snapping up a player who can excel in both roles would effectively kill two birds with one stone.

While no specific player is mentioned in the update, Sporting CP youngster Goncalo Inacio could be a perfect option, having been linked with a move to Liverpool many times already this year and playing on the left side of a back three at times throughout this career.

The 22-year-old already has lots of experience in his career, despite still being so young, having made 175 appearances for his club side and won 11 caps for Portugal, potentially proving to be the future of his country's side defence after the retirement of Pepe.

With Ibrahima Konate injury-prone and Jarell Quansah still learning, as shown by his half-time substitution at Ipswich Town, another centre-back is much-needed, or Liverpool risk suddenly looking short of options.

Cost £650k: Celtic struck gold by selling star who’s worth more than CCV

The summer transfer window officially slammed shut towards the end of last month and it was a busy last few weeks of the market for Celtic and their incoming business.

It was a slow start to the summer for the Scottish giants, who did not make a single outfield signing before August, but they finished it with a flourish.

Viljami Sinisalo and Kasper Schmeichel both came through the door before the last month of the window, following Joe Hart's retirement at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

The Hoops then swooped to sign Paulo Bernardo and Adam Idah on permanent deals, along with Barcelona left-back Alex Valle on a season-long loan deal.

It then got to deadline day, shortly after the sale of Matt O'Riley to Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion, and Brendan Rodgers dipped into the market to make three new additions to his squad.

Central midfielders Arne Engels and Luke McCowan came in from Augsburg and Dundee respectively, whilst centre-back Auston Trusty joined from Sheffield United.

Trusty has the task of displacing Liam Scales, as a left-footed central defender, in order to play alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers, who has been a rock at the back for Celtic for a number of seasons.

Cameron Carter-Vickers' current market value

At the time of writing (08/09/2024), Transfermarkt currently values the USA international at a whopping €14m (£11.8m) and that makes him the joint-highest valued player in the squad, alongside Kyogo Furuhashi.

In the summer of 2022, Celtic paid a reported fee of £6m to sign the central defender on a permanent basis after an initial year on loan with the club under Ange Postecoglou.

Carter-Vickers featured in 33 of the club's 38 Scottish Premiership matches in his season on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in the 2021/22 campaign, and won 68% of his defensive duels.

As you can see in the table above, the American titan was a dominant figure at the heart of the Celtic defence in his first two seasons with the club as a permanent member of the team.

He has also won 67% of his duels and helped the Hoops to keep four clean sheets in four matches at the start of the 2024/25 campaign, which suggests that Carter-Vickers is on course for yet another impressive year at Parkhead.

Despite being the most valuable player in the Celtic squad and a consistently fantastic performer, there is a former Bhoys centre-back who is currently worth more than him – Kristoffer Ajer.

How much Celtic paid for Kristoffer Ajer

At the start of 2016, the Scottish giants swooped to sign the 17-year-old starlet from IK Start for a reported fee of just £650k, after the teenage gem had emerged as a first-team option for the side in his home country, in a deal that saw him officially join the club in the summer.

Curiously, Ajer played as a defensive midfielder, a central midfielder, and as a centre-forward for Start, and contributed with 14 goals and seven assists in 61 matches in all competitions, including seven goals in 14 games as a striker.

The Norwegian gem initially joined the academy team, and played five UEFA Youth League matches in the first half of the 2016/17 campaign, before being sent out on loan to Kilmarnock at the start of 2017 – making 16 Premiership appearances.

Ajer then returned to Celtic and made 24 appearances in the Scottish top-flight during the 2017/18 campaign, with all 34 of his outings in all competitions coming as a centre-back.

The Norway international went on to rack up 176 games in all competitions for the Premiership giants, contributing with seven goals and seven assists.

Along with providing an attacking threat from a centre-back position, the towering colossus, who was described as "faultless" by former boss Neil Lennon, also showcased his defensive quality in his final Premiership season with the club.

As you can see in the table above, Ajer was a dominant performer at the heart of the defence for Celtic and that form helped him to earn a move to the Premier League in the summer of 2021.

How much Celtic sold Kristoffer Ajer for

Brentford swooped in to sign him from Celtic for a reported fee of £13.5m ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, following their promotion from the Championship.

This shows that the Hoops struck gold with the central defender as they turned a £650k signing from Norway into a £13.5m player, who also made the best part of 200 appearances for the club in all competitions.

Brentford centre-back Kristoffer Ajer.

At the time of writing (08/09/2024), Transfermarkt places Ajer's current market value at €15m (£12.6m) and that means that, whilst he is still more valuable than Carter-Vickers, his value has decreased since his move to the Bees.

This is another reason why the Scottish giants hit the jackpot with the central defender, as his market value has not improved during his time in England.

Therefore, Celtic seemingly cashed in on him at the perfect time and have not, as of yet, lived to regret selling him for £13.5m, as that currently looks like a fantastic deal by the Premiership side.

As you can see in the table above, Ajer did feature in 28 of Brentford's 38 Premier League games in the 2023/24 campaign, but only helped his team to keep two clean sheets, which suggests that he was part of a leaky defence for Thomas Frank.

Ultimately, his performances in England over the last three seasons or so have not been good enough to see his value rise above the fee Celtic paid for him, which is why they struck gold with the Norway international, despite him still being worth more than Carter-Vickers.

Mickey Arthur: They're No. 1, we're No. 9, and you can see the difference

Sri Lanka’s head coach said he wants the batters to be more proactive against a world-class England attack

Matt Roller25-Jun-2021Mickey Arthur has urged his Sri Lanka side to stay patient after they slipped to a second defeat in as many nights in Cardiff, leaving them on a run of 11 defeats in their last 12 completed T20Is dating back to October 2019.Opting to bat first in both games after winning the toss, Sri Lanka posted scores of 129 and 111, and while they came much closer to defending their total on Thursday night than in Wednesday’s eight-wicket pasting, they always looked a long way short of a par score, failing to hit a boundary in the powerplay for the first time in their T20I history. Arthur, Sri Lanka’s head coach, stressed at the start of the tour that he wanted to add a level of consistency to selection following a turbulent period of chopping and changing, and that it would be important to “nail down the guys’ roles” in this series.Dasun Shanaka, with scores of 50 and 8 from No. 7, is their leading run-scorer in the series, with Danushka Gunathilaka and Avishka Fernando – backed as opening options for the long term – both struggling to make an impact at the top of the order. Their lack of attacking intent with the bat came under scrutiny on Thursday, but while Arthur suggested that they could be “more proactive” in future, he said that there had been limited opportunities to score against a “world-class” England side on a slow, two-paced pitch being used for the second night in a row.Related

Arthur wants top-heavy SL to find middle-order balance in England

“Just not enough runs again,” Arthur told the BBC, when asked for his take on his side’s defeat. “We’re coming up against a really good bowling attack. They’re ranked No. 1 in the world, we’re ranked No. 9 [actually No. 8] and you can see the difference. We’ve started a journey with a young team and for us it’s about getting better, competing, learning from every game and every experience and getting better and better as we go along.”It’s tough. We’re consistently talking about freedom, about taking the handbrake off as a batting unit. But you can only bat as well as you’re allowed to and I thought England were world-class with the lengths they hit. They put us under a lot of pressure with the bat.”We can be more proactive and we’ve got to go back and work on that. We can walk around the crease a little bit more and try to do different things but our batters are learning all the time, particularly in these conditions. We’ve got a really exciting batting unit in our conditions but it’s about transferring those skills to conditions outside our own environment.”There have been more positives with the ball, with Dushmantha Chameera finding steepling bounce with the new ball in both games, Wanindu Hasaranga conceding only four runs per over across the series, and Binura Fernando striking with the new ball when handed an opportunity on Thursday night. Arthur also highlighted the improvements that have been made in Sri Lanka’s fielding after he had placed an emphasis on fitness, and noted the absence of the injured Lahiru Kumara and Kasun Rajitha.”I thought we bowled really well,” he said. “Our fielding has gone up to another level. Fielding is all about attitude, it’s measurable, and I think the guys are getting better and better with that. We’re really excited with our bowling unit and we’ve got a couple of guys that are injured as well, so when we get them back we’ll be good.”

Ange must now drop Sarr and unleash Spurs’ "incredible" sensation

It would be fair to say that things haven’t entirely gone according to plan for Tottenham Hotspur this season.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have picked up just four points out of a possible 12 in the Premier League, despite playing relatively well for three of those games, and came perilously close to crashing out of the League Cup to Championship side Coventry City on Wednesday night.

For whatever reason, the Australian’s side just haven’t found their feet yet, and for all their intricate play, they seem incapable of putting the ball in the back of the net.

However, he has the opportunity to put their recent troubles behind them later on today with what’s sure to be a tough game against Brentford, one in which he must make some changes to the team that crawled over the line in mid-week.

Postecoglou must drop Pape Matar Sarr

Senegalese international Pape Matar Sarr is one of the players who needs to be dropped from the starting lineup later today.

Pape Matar Sarr

Now, unlike the majority of his teammates, the “frightening” 22-year-old, as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, didn’t have a howler on Wednesday, but he wasn’t exactly effective either, and considering Coventry are currently down in 15th place in the Championship, that’s not good enough.

Unsurprisingly, this sentiment is one shared by Spurs writer Alasdair Gold, who gave the midfielder just a 5/10 on the night, writing that while there were some ‘good moments’ from the starter, there were just as many ‘sloppy ones’ which sounds like a disaster waiting to happen against the Bees.

Spurs midfielder Pape Sarr celebrating against Bournemouth.

Moreover, he was trusted to start in the game against Leicester City, where he was equally ineffective, and in the defeat away to Newcastle United, when he was hooked at halftime. Therefore, Sarr must be dropped to the bench for the game later today, as he might be able to make more of an impact coming into the match late on.

Why Maddison should replace Sarr

So, following Wednesday’s disappointing display and the players available to Ange, it would make the most sense for Dejan Kulusevski to come in and replace the young Lucas Bergvall, as in recent matches, he’s shown that midfield is where he is most effective.

Rodrigo Bentancur will almost certainly keep his place in the team due to a lack of other options and his raw ability.

This means that James Maddison is the best candidate to replace Sarr and complete what would be quite a progressive midfield three.

Now, the Englishman received plenty of criticism for his poor performance against Arsenal last week, and it was justified, but when it comes to midfield creators, he’s still one of the best in the squad.

For example, even amid this minor slump in form, he’s racked up two assists in four Premier League games and injected some much-needed energy into the game against Coventry.

Moreover, while the critique that he faded in the second half of last season is entirely valid, it ignores the fact that the “incredible” midfielder, as talent scout Jacek Kulig dubbed him, still managed to rack up four goals and nine assists in 28 league appearances, which equates to a goal involvement every 2.15 games.

Ultimately, Postecoglou needs to get a result against Brentford this afternoon, and while Sarr is a talented young player sure to improve, Maddison is far more likely to produce a bit of magic that could win his team the game, so he has to start.

Cesc Fabregas as manager, Serie A's richest owners and now Dele Alli: Welcome to Como – the big-spending minnows making noise in Italian football

Could the former England international rebuild his career at one of the most ambitious and attractive projects in world football?

A couple of weeks before Dele Alli started training with Como, the former England international was spotted in the stands at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia for the Serie A clash with Roma.

Sinigaglia is not a particularly impressive structure in itself. It's neither big nor beautiful – but the backdrop is breathtaking. The stadium – which Como couldn't even use for the first few weeks of the season because of construction work required to make it compatible with Serie A regulations – is located right on the edge of one of the most spectacular lakes in the world, a natural wonder long associated with stunning scenery and celebrity visitors.

Consequently, Dele wasn't even the most famous face in the crowd on December 15. Hollywood stars Michael Fassbender, Keira Knightley and Adrien Brody were also among the 10,376 people in attendance – and nobody was in the least bit surprised. Because this is the wonderful world of Como 1907: a small club with big ambitions that might just have sufficient pulling power to become a major force in Serie A.

'No crest, no academy, no training pitches'

After Como had claimed their first league win in more than two-and-a-half months by beating Roma 2-0 with injury-time goals from Alessandro Gabrielloni and Nico Paz, coach Cesc Fabregas was understandably reluctant to be drawn too much on the potential signing of Dele. Firstly, nothing had yet been finalised with the ex-Tottenham star. And secondly, Fabregas didn't want to distract from what had been a fantastic performance from his players.

"I only got to know Dele yesterday," the former Arsenal midfielder told reporters. "I don’t want to talk much about this, but perhaps there's a chance that he will start training with us after Christmas. Let’s see. It would be to help him get in shape and nothing more. For now, we must enjoy this win. We must talk about Como, Gabrielloni and the lads. This is the most important thing."

He had a point. Como were the story of the day and Gabrielloni undeniably deserved to dominate the headlines. In a way, the veteran striker personifies the club’s progress over the past six seasons. With his 93rd-minute goal against Roma, Gabrielloni became just the fifth man in the history of Italian football to score in every league from Serie D to Serie A with the same side – and the scenes which followed were absolutely beautiful.

"An incredible joy!" he enthused in his post-match interview with . "I couldn't have imagined being here even just a few years ago!"

Gabrielloni joined Como in 2017. He remembers the dark days – just after the club had gone bankrupt for the second time this century. However, everything started to change after the 2019 takeover by SENT Entertainment, which is controlled by the Djarum Group, an Indonesian conglomerate led by the Harton brothers, Robert Budi and Michael Bambang.

Former Chelsea midfielder Dennis Wise was initially brought on board in an advisory role before being made CEO in 2021, as slow, steady and symbiotic progress was made, both from a structural and sporting perspective.

"When we arrived," Wise explained, "we had no crest, no academy and no training pitches: we had to rent everything. Now, we have everything."

Advertisement'I didn't care about the money'

Wise also played a pivotal role in Fabregas' shock move to Como in the summer of 2022 – at a time when the club was still in Serie B. "Dennis was the most convincing [of the club directors I spoke to]," the midfielder explained at the time. "I didn't care about the money. I just wanted to join a project that excited me. I see a long-term future for this club."

There were clearly significant financial factors at play, with Fabregas becoming a shareholder in the club upon his arrival (just a few short weeks before his former Arsenal team-mate Thierry Henry followed suit), but the World Cup winner was also undeniably motivated by the prospect of a clear path into management.

His eventual appointment as first-team boss in November 2023 still came as something of a surprise – Como had made a decent start to the season under Moreno Longo – but it had always been part of the long-term plan. It just arrived a little sooner than everyone expected.

Fabregas, who had been coaching the club's Primavera (Under-19s) since retiring at the end of the 2022-23 season, didn't even have the requisite qualifications at the time to take the title of head coach on a permanent basis. Consequently, Osian Roberts was installed in a caretaker capacity, with Fabregas formally serving as one of the Welshman's assistants.

'Do you want to go to Ibiza?!'

However, it was obvious for the remainder of the 2023-24 season that Fabregas was the one calling the shots. He even promised the players to pay for a trip to Ibiza if they secured promotion to Italy's top flight – and he proved true to his word.

"No sooner had he said it, than it was done," centre-forward Patrick Cutrone revealed in an interview with . "A few hours after the game, we were on the plane!"

Not that Cutrone had doubted Fabregas for a second. "We have bonded a lot with the mister (coach)," he explained. "With nine games to go, we went on a retreat in Marbella, Spain. He told us: 'We can win all the remaining games and go straight to Serie A. If you believe in it, we can do it.' And from that day on we got more points than anyone else. That moment gave us the mental strength to do what we did.

"But right from the start he was very good at getting into the role of manager, he always told us he had been coached by the best, and that he had studied them. And why not learn from Pep Guardiola? Or Jose Mourinho? Or Antonio Conte? Or Arsene Wenger?

"He was very helpful, he always gave us great advice on everything. His work went beyond the pitch, becoming fundamental off it too."

'Thierry Henry in the Como dressing room!'

Despite all of the good work done behind the scenes by Fabregas, and all of the money invested in the club by the Hartono brothers, promotion still felt surreal to Cutrone. The striker had been tipped to do great things at AC Milan, after breaking into the senior side as a teenager all the way back in 2017, but his career had unravelled after an ill-advised move to Wolves.

So, after one failed loan deal after another, he went home, to Como, and fired Fabregas' side to promotion with 14 goals in 32 games.

"When the referee blew the final whistle against Consenza, I couldn't process anything," he told . "The fans entered the field and overwhelmed me. But I managed to find my brother and my mother in the crowd. We hugged each other and burst into tears because, two years ago, when my father passed away, we weren't doing very well. It was a beautiful moment.

"Then, one of the last things I ever expected to see: Thierry Henry in the Como dressing room! I was amazed. He came towards me and hugged me three or four times. I didn't know what to do. It was Henry, an icon of world football! Seeing him in our dressing room had a profound effect on me, but then we went back to the pitch and he presented me with the award for Best Player of the Serie B season… Henry! Crazy!

"After that, I turned around and there was Jamie Vardy. Just like that, randomly. We spoke for 30 seconds and he congratulated me, and vice versa for Leicester's promotion."

Fewer touches than Raya: Arteta must immediately drop 5/10 Arsenal ace

It’s been a rocky few weeks for Arsenal.

First, they lost new signing Mikel Merino to a shoulder injury, then Declan Rice was sent off in a 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion, and then to top it all off, club captain and midfield maestro Martin Odegaard was ruled out for at least three weeks while on international duty.

However, Mikel Arteta has shown time and time again that he and his team can deal with adversity, and even with a second-string midfield, he oversaw a 1-0 victory away to Tottenham Hotspur yesterday afternoon.

It might not have been a vintage attacking performance, but the team put in a serious shift for the Spaniard. However, for the Champions League opener this week, Arteta should look to drop one of his starters who took fewer touches than David Raya.

Why Jorginho should be dropped

So, the player in question is Italian international Jorginho, and let it be said that while he wasn’t spectacular yesterday, he was selected to do a job, and given the circumstances, he did it reasonably well.

However, given his age and the fact that it was his first involvement this season, there were some understandable but impossible-to-ignore limitations to his game, limitations that could be costly against Atalanta.

For example, in his 95 minutes on the pitch, the former Chelsea ace only took 29 touches, 19 fewer than Raya in goal. On top of that, he lost five of eight duels, lost the ball eight times, and gave away two fouls, and he just looked utterly exhausted by full-time.

In fact, it is for reasons such as these that football.london’s Chief Arsenal writer Kaya Kaynak gave the 32-year-old a 5/10 on the day, writing that ‘his lack of mobility really showed at times’ and he was ‘turned very easily by Kulusevski on a few occasions.’

With all of that said, the midfield general fought for the team yesterday and showed that he can still be a valuable player in Arteta’s squad, but his fatigue and lack of mobility are impossible to ignore, so he should be dropped to the bench for Thursday’s clash.

The man to replace Jorginho

Okay, so this should come as no surprise, but knowing Arteta’s fondness for Jorginho, there is always a chance that he will start the Italian in Bergamo this week, even though he shouldn’t.

However, he should bring Rice back into the fold, and there are a couple of reasons why.

The first is a straightforward one: the Englishman is one of the most talented midfielders in the country and should, as such, start in big European games against a team that won the Europa League last season.

For example, despite playing much of the 23/24 campaign as a traditional six, the “phenomenal” 25-year-old, as dubbed by respected analyst EBL, scored seven goals and provided ten assists, highlighting his importance at both ends of the pitch.

The second reason the 25-year-old should start is related to the game against Manchester City at the weekend.

If he weren’t to play against Atalanta, then the Englishman’s first Arsenal game in over three weeks would be against the Champions, and that seems disadvantageous.

Now, that doesn’t mean the former West Ham United captain should play the entire match on Thursday either, but he needs to play some competitive football with the team again before Sunday’s monumental encounter.

Ultimately, Jorginho did a fine job yesterday afternoon – even if he was awarded a 5/10 – but due to Rice’s immense talent and the upcoming clash with City, it should be him who starts in the Champions League this week.
