Tottenham snubbed chance to sell Dele Alli for ‘over £80m’ – with ex-England international now a free agent & fighting for his future amid injury struggles at Everton

Dele Alli is a free agent fighting for his future, but David Pleat has revealed Tottenham had the chance to sell him for “over £80 million”.

Back in 2016-17, Dele enjoyed the most productive campaign of his career to date. He found the target on 22 occasions across all competitions for Spurs and was considered to be one of the best goal-scoring midfielders in world football.

Tottenham had snapped him up for just £5m from MK Dons in 2015, after finally heeding transfer advice from former manager and director of football Pleat, and passed up the chance to make a healthy £75m ($98m) profit on that investment.

WHAT PLEAT SAID

Pleat, who also filled a role as scout during his time in north London, has told : “[My role at Spurs in recent years has been] consultant and scout. I’m very pleased with one or two players who came in where I had an influence, one being Jack Clarke. None of the managers handled him well. He can play.

“There was Dele Alli, too. I took Franco Baldini to watch him and he was on his phone the whole time – he didn’t even watch him. I’ve got six reports on Dele over a period of two years; they should’ve reacted after my first two. Eventually they heard he was going to Aston Villa or Newcastle. They rang me and I said, 'Well, fancy that? Serves you right. You have to get hold of him.' They did the deal really quickly and I persuaded the chairman that £5m wasn’t too much to pay.

“At one stage they could have sold him for over £80m, then things happened. I’m sad because I saw him at 16 and he already had that stature about him, and he could play, too.”

GettyWHAT NEXT FOR DELE?

Dele has endured a humbling fall from grace of late, with the 28-year-old England international currently a free agent after seeing his contract at Everton expire. He is still training with the Toffees, in the hope of earning fresh terms, but has made just 13 appearances for the Premier League outfit since joining them in January 2022 – with his last appearance of any kind in an injury-ravaged run coming in February 2023 during a loan spell at Besiktas.

Arsenal can hit gold signing a "genius" who’s worth more than Rice & Yamal

During his first pre-season interview, Mikel Arteta admitted that the transfer window was a rather slower affair this time around.

You can perhaps blame Copa America and Euro 2024 on that. Plenty of Arsenal players have shone over the summer months, however, notably in Germany.

Kai Havertz scored twice before the host nation were knocked out. Bukayo Saka scored against Switzerland and netted his crucial penalty in the same match.

The true star, however, is not one who plays for the Gunners. They'd love him to, but sadly he doesn't. That is 17-year-old Lamine Yamal.

Lamine Yamal's Euro 2024 in numbers

The teenager has been a total phenomenon during the European Championships, scoring a simply sumptuous goal in the semi-finals against France and registering three assists along the way.

Yamal's stats prior to the Euro 2024 final.

He has captivated not just his nation, but the entire continent. There isn't a single player in football history to score a goal at a major tournament at a younger age than Yamal.

The Spaniard is the natural heir to Lionel Messi and after such a breakout tournament, Barcelona will be slapping an almighty price tag on his head to warn off any potential suitors.

At the moment, he is currently valued at €90m (£77m) by Transfermarkt but that is set to skyrocket in the forthcoming years.

Actually rather similar to Saka in the way he cuts inside onto that deadly left foot, you may well ask why the Spanish sensation is relevant to Arsenal's transfer business. Well, there's a player they've previously been interested in who's worth a little bit more.

Arsenal have targeted Florian Wirtz

Reports from Spain a few months ago suggested that Arsenal and Liverpool were battling Real Madrid to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz.

The German, who like Yamal scored at the Euros this summer, was nothing short of spectacular under Xabi Alonso last term.

Playing alongside former Gunner Granit Xhaka, the attacking midfielder scored 18 goals and supplied 20 assists in all competitions as Leverkusen won the Bundesliga title unbeaten.

It was a remarkable achievement and indeed a remarkable term for the 21-year-old who has undoubtedly captured the eye of plenty of suitors.

There is an inkling that Wirtz will be staying put this summer but if Arsenal, or any other suitor could tempt him away from his homeland, they would surely strike gold.

To put his numbers into context versus those already at Arsenal, only Saka scored more goals last term (20), while no player in the famous red or white registered more assists. The club's number 7 was the main man again in that regard, supplying 14, three more than Martin Odegaard.

Described as a "little genius" by scout Jacek Kulig, he could fetch an almighty fee when the time comes to leave.

According to Transfermarkt, he is valued at a colossal price, more than the aforementioned Yamal.

That estimation currently sits at a whopping £112m. To offer some perspective, Saka is rated at £120m and Declan Rice – their £105m signing of a year ago – is still valued at a similar amount.

We must admit that a deal this year seems unlikely but if the player is on the table in 2025, Arsenal should be all over it. He is an elite talent who is set to star at the top level for many a year to come.

Chelsea player ratings vs Newcastle: Cole Palmer proves his point with another match-winning display as Nicolas Jackson impresses again while Reece James struggles to answer Enzo Maresca's call

The England midfielder scored one and helped create another at Stamford Bridge as Enzo Maresca's side got back to winning ways in the Premier League

Questions were asked of Cole Palmer following Chelsea's loss at Liverpool last time out in the Premier League, but the England midfielder bounced back in sensational fashion to lead the Blues to a 2-1 victory over Newcastle on Sunday.

Palmer thought he had given Enzo Maresca's side an early lead when he latched onto Nicolas Jackson's pass, but his strike was ruled out for offside. However, Chelsea did break the deadlock after 18 minutes as Pedro Neto latched onto Palmer's delicious through-ball and squared for Jackson to tap home.

The Blues were the better side, but found themselves pegged back when Alexander Isak stole in to prod Lewis Hall's left-wing cross into an empty net. However, Palmer stepped up to re-establish the home side's lead two minutes into the second half when he powered a strike past Nick Pope at his near post.

Neto hit the post with a header shortly after, but Chelsea had to work hard to see out the victory, with Reece James and Moises Caicedo both making last-ditch blocks to deny Isak a second equaliser.

Robert Sanchez (5/10):

Had no chance with Isak's goal and wasn't really stretched otherwise. Some of his distribution, though, was abysmal.

Malo Gusto (7/10):

Drifted centrally as Chelsea attacked, meaning he found plenty of space to cause Newcastle problems. Very good defensively up against Barnes, too. Goal came from his flank but he was outnumbered.

Wesley Fofana (7/10):

Recovered from an early booking and injury scare to enjoy a successful return from suspension. Fine block denied Almiron in the first half.

Levi Colwill (7/10):

Oozed confidence in most of what he did and carried the ball well when in possession. Won the ball back on halfway to spark the move for the second goal.

Reece James (5/10):

Deployed in an unfamiliar role at left-back and the captain didn't always look comfortable, while his cross-field balls were easily cut out. Failed to track Isak's run for the equaliser, though did nod block the Swede's goalbound header in the second half.

Romeo Lavia (6/10):

Had a couple of wayward passes early on but settled in eventually and put himself about in midfield. Perhaps could have been stronger in the build-up to Newcastle's equaliser, but made up for it by holding off tacklers to claim the assist for Palmer's strike.

Moises Caicedo (7/10):

Put out fires in midfield and looked to spread the play when in possession. Got back brilliantly to deny Isak from making it 2-2 with Sanchez out of the picture.

Cole Palmer (9/10):

Given the freedom of Stamford Bridge and he made sure to make Newcastle pay. Unlucky to have his early effort ruled out for offside but his pass to spring Neto for Jackson's was outrageous. Eventually got his goal early in the second half as he began to answer some of his recent critics.

AFPAttack

Noni Madueke (6/10):

Provided an outlet down the right but couldn't produce in the final third as he would have liked. Had a couple of weak efforts before being replaced midway through the second half.

Nicolas Jackson (8/10):

Gave Burn the run-around in the first half, both by using his strength when dropping deep and then with his pace in behind. Deserved his goal for an excellent all-round showing.

Pedro Neto (7/10):

Used his pace to get in behind and lay on Jackson's goal, and caused plenty of problems for Livramento. Unlucky to see his header come back off the post.

Enzo Fernandez (6/10):

Kept things relatively stable after coming on for Lavia.

Marc Cucurella (6/10):

Replaced Gusto for the final few minutes.

Christopher Nkunku (6/10):

Thought he'd won a late penalty but VAR overruled after his tussle with Burn.

Enzo Maresca (7/10):

Experimenting with James at left-back didn't go as well as he would have hoped, but the movement of Gusto – a staple of Maresca's full-backs – allowed Palmer to thrive.

Liverpool player ratings vs Bayer Leverkusen: Deadly Luis Diaz brings the fireworks while Cody Gakpo and Curtis Jones sparkle as Arne Slot outwits Xabi Alonso in Champions League rout

The Colombian netted a second-half hat-trick at Anfield as the Reds made it four wins from four in Europe this season

Liverpool welcomed Xabi Alonso back to Anfield on Wednesday in the Champions League, but his Bayer Leverkusen side were handed a lesson by the hosts as the Reds coasted to a 4-0 win.

After a low-key first half of few chances, the Anfield crowd found its voice and Liverpool finally sparked into life with two goals in two minutes just past the hour mark to take control of the match.

The in-form Curtis Jones sent Liverpool on their way with a glorious ball for Luis Diaz to dink over Lukas Hradecky, before Mohamed Salah crossed for Cody Gakpo to slam a header home.

Diaz then gobbled up two more goals in the final 10 minutes to complete his hat-trick and maintain Liverpool's perfect start to the competition.

How a call from Brian Lara helped spark Andre Fletcher to life in the BBL

Fletcher is weighing up whether to stay with the Melbourne Stars or head to the Abu Dhabi T10 League

Alex Malcolm16-Jan-2021A phone call from Brian Lara was the catalyst for Andre Fletcher to burst out of his BBL form slump, but he revealed he may not be available for the finals if the Melbourne Stars progress that far as they also prepare for life without Haris Rauf.Rauf was named in the Pakistan Test squad for a two-Test of South Africa starting on January 26 and left Melbourne today after bowling just one over in the Stars’ thumping win over the Adelaide Strikers at the MCG.Fletcher also said he may not see the tournament out. He has signed to play in the Abu Dhabi T10 League for the Bangla Tigers, with the 10-day tournament starting on January 28, two days after the Stars’ last home and away game and a day prior to the BBL eliminator. The BBL finals run from January 28 to February 6. The Stars have already released Ben Dunk from his contract and he is listed to play for the Qalandars in the T10 competition, which is also his PSL franchise.Related

Fletcher said he would like to stay in Melbourne if it’s possible after receiving tremendous support from the Stars during his lean run of form.”I signed a T10 deal a few weeks before the BBL so I’ll have a think about it, speak to my agent and hear what he says,” Fletcher said. “I would love to stay to be honest.”Fletcher was Player of the Match for his stunning 89 not out, having not passed 18 in his first nine BBL innings this season, and having not passed 50 in his last 30 T20 innings dating back to December 2019.On Wednesday he received a phone call out of the blue from Lara, who is Australia commentating on the BBL for Australian broadcaster Channel Seven, to give him some advice.”He called me and I was surprised, to be honest,” Fletcher said after his match-winning innings. “He was telling me that, looking from the outside, I’ve been striking the ball cleanly and he just told me to give myself that opportunity. Giving myself that chance and playing each ball on its merits.”I’m an aggressive player so there’s no need to go out there and look to [over] power the ball. To be honest, that’s what I did today.”I’ve met him before. He’s a great guy. I told him over the phone, after what he told me I was like, ‘So Brian, now I understand the reason you were so great’.”He told me, feel free to call him any time I wish to, he’s there, he’s open for anything and willing to give me advice.”Captain Glenn Maxwell gave Fletcher a warm and long embrace after he came off the ground.”You could see what it meant to him after the game,” Maxwell said. “He was obviously pretty emotional. He got the phone call from the Prince during the week. Just to have that support behind the scenes was really crucial for him. We know how hard he’s been working in the nets. He’s a great team man as well.”The Stars vaulted back into finals calculations with their huge win over the Strikers and play their last four matches in Melbourne, including three at the MCG, but losing Rauf is a blow to the balance of their side. Maxwell was hopeful that Nathan Coulter-Nile would return from his calf injury soon to bolster their bowling stocks.”We’re equal third but also equal sixth,” Maxwell said. “It’s nice and tight at the moment. Obviously Haris is a big loss but he gets to play Test cricket for his nation and that’s a big achievement. We wish him all the best.”We’ve got Coults coming back from injury really soon so it’s probably good timing if there is a good time to lose Haris.”Coulter-Nile hasn’t played since he damaged his calf on December 26 in the loss to the Sydney Sixers.

Sky Sports: Rangers now close to signing £26,000-p/w ace with move advanced

Rangers are closing in on another new signing at Ibrox, it has been reported, with Philippe Clement about to be handed an attacking ace this summer.

Clement plotting major Rangers changes

Booed off at half-time in their most recent pre-season match, a 2-1 defeat to League One Birmingham City, Rangers look well short of mounting another Scottish Premiership title challenge as things stand.

Quizzed afterwards on potential new additions, the Rangers boss admitted he expected fresh faces between now and the Scottish Premiership getting back underway but refused to be drawn on specifics.

Clement said: "I'm confident of that [new signings] because everyone is working hard for that. There's a good possibility, but no guarantees. There has to be a signature from three sides – the player, the other team and from us. It's working every day with the players who are available to make them better and to give them experience in pre-season of course. Because of the Euros everything starts slower. You see that with several teams where nothing has happened yet.

Instead, attention has been focused on outgoings, with Connor Goldson missing the pre-season defeat in an attempt to seal a move away from Ibrox, while Todd Cantwell has handed in a transfer request on two occasions and is now set to be axed from the squad.

Another set to leave is striker Sam Lammers, who Clement admitted was not in his plans after spending the second half of the season on loan at FC Utrecht.

Rangers striker Sam Lammers.

"He has been training with the second team because it was really clear he doesn't fit in the plans for this season, we were clear about that a few months ago. We cannot train with a squad of 50, we're above 30 for the moment. Sam is getting closer and closer to have a good solution and make a transfer."

But there is one incoming that could have plenty at Ibrox feeling excited.

Winger on verge of Rangers move

That comes with Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg claiming that Rangers are advancing over a loan move for Czech winger Vaclav Cerny, with the 26-year-old "on the verge" of moving to Ibrox from Wolfsburg. The right-winger only signed for the German outfit last season, penning a four-year contract worth £26,000-a-week.

But he started just 12 Bundesliga games and returned only four goals across his first season with Wolfsburg, which has seemingly seen him deemed surplus to requirements for the upcoming campaign.

And Rangers have pounced on the ex-FC Twente man, with a season-long loan seemingly in the pipeline for the winger. Though he struggled at Wolfsburg, his talent is clear with the winger grabbing 13 goals and 11 assists in his final season for Twente, while he has also managed six goals in 17 international appearances.

Cerny has been dubbed a possible "brilliant" signing for Rangers in the media, being compared to Arjen Robben, while his ability to cut in on his left foot and find the corner was picked up by the official UEFA account too, who tweeted two of his "brilliant" strikes.

He could also be an early favourite with Rangers fans after it emerged that he had already scored a late winner against Celtic, while playing for Ajax in 2015, to knock them out of the Europa League in the process.

Given his international pedigree with the Czech Republic and clear prodigious talent when fit and available, he could prove an excellent addition to Clement's ranks.

Chelsea have already struck gold on star who’s worth way more than Chiesa

New Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has a huge job on his hands this season, trying to implement his system to the Blues squad, whilst also trying to achieve success.

The Italian has been brought into the club to take over from former boss Mauricio Pochettino after the Argentinian was sacked despite registering a sixth-placed Premier League finish last season.

Maresca has a huge array of talents at his disposal at Stamford Bridge, but it’s down to him to decide who will be best suited in certain roles to give the club the best possible chance of returning towards the top end of the Premier League table.

New Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca

However, on the other hand, he has the opportunity to make his own mark with transfers, as demonstrated by the signing of midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from Leicester City – the same club he departed to take the reins in west London.

With less than two weeks to go until the start of the 2024/25 campaign, the club are still active in the market with numerous incomings and outgoings to be expected.

Chelsea transfer news

Following the recent addition of goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal, Maresca is still looking to further improve his defensive unit, with Nottingham Forest defender Murillo once again linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.

The Brazilian has constantly been touted with a move away from the City Ground after his impressive debut campaign at the club, which saw him play a huge part in the club’s Premier League survival for a second successive campaign.

Nottingham Forest defender Murillo

However, the forward line is the area that has had the most attention in recent weeks, with various targets linked with a move to West London.

Victor Osimhen has been the subject of discussions with the Blues, with the latest update potentially seeing current Chelsea man Romelu Lukaku potentially going in the opposite direction – allowing for a cut-price deal for Maresca’s side.

Federico Chiesa has also been touted with a move to sign for the club after rumours linking him with a move away from Juventus following the appointment of Thiago Motta in Turin.

However, to fund a move for any of the aforementioned talents, Chelsea will have to part ways with some current first-team members to make room for the improvements.

Conor Gallagher’s market value in 2024

After coming through the Cobham academy, the "relentless" Conor Gallagher, as dubbed by Statman Dave, has made huge strides in recent years, before cementing a consistent first-team spot, featuring in 37 Premier League matches last season.

However, he looks set to leave his boyhood club after the arrival of Maresca, with the Englishman seemingly not part of his immediate plans, with Atlético Madrid having a £34m bid accepted for his services.

His subsequent fee would represent brilliant business for the club, netting a huge profit having come through the academy – helping their current FFP standing.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher

Should they receive the touted fee, it would see him worth more than current target Chiesa, who’s rumoured to be available for £21m this summer – with the Italian having just one year left on his deal in Turin.

Whilst it would be a shame to part ways with another talented academy graduate, the club would be able to use the funds generated to invest in crucial areas of the squad.

He’s been an excellent servant to the football club, having a huge impact on the first-team, but also making them a solid profit in the process – with Gallagher having the ability to kick on with regular game time in Spain.

Grealish was notably absent from Manchester City’s Champions League squad in late October during their clash with Sparta Prague. Despite this, England interim manager Lee Carsley surprisingly included the 29-year-old in his final squad for the Three Lions' Nations League matches. This decision raised eyebrows, particularly as City manager Pep Guardiola had already stated that Grealish would not be fit until after the international break.

Blazing fifties from Kishan, Kohli power India to 1-1

On a sluggish deck, India’s quicks leaked just 35 runs in the last five overs

Manjrekar: Ishan Kishan the kind of batsman who’s not afraid of getting dismissed

India 166 for 3 (Kohli 73*, Kishan 56) beat England 164 for 6 (Roy 46) by seven wicketsA thrilling debut half-century from Ishan Kishan tore apart the second T20I in Ahmedabad, before a timely return to form from Virat Kohli sealed the contest with 13 balls to spare, as India bounced back from their opening-rubber defeat to level the series with an emphatic seven-wicket win.It was another sluggish deck at Motera – one which appeared, in the latter stages of England’s own innings, to have given up the ghost completely, as Shardul Thakur pointed the way to victory with a split-fingered masterclass in England’s sub-par total of 164 for 6.But, even allowing for the dew factor which kicked in under the lights, England’s own bowlers found nothing with which to respond – at least after Sam Curran had launched their reply with an immaculate wicket-maiden that culminated in KL Rahul edging to the keeper for a duck.India fined for slow over rate

India have been fined 20% of their match fees for maintaining a slow over rate during the second T20I against England on Sunday. Match referee Javagal Srinath imposed the sanction after the hosts were ruled to be one over short after time allowances were taken into consideration. In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20% of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.
Virat Kohli pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing. On-field umpires Anil Chaudhary and KN Ananthapadmanabhan, and third umpire Virender Sharma had leveled the charge.

That, however, would prove to be a false dawn. Sam remained the pick of England’s bowlers with four overs for 22 all told, and Jofra Archer proved economical while lacking his usual menace. But the remaining three seamers all endured chastening days – not least Tom Curran, who was back in the team after Mark Wood pulled up lame with a bruised ankle, but failed to turn up on a pitch which, to judge by India’s own efforts, ought to have suited his variation-laden style.Instead, Tom might as well have been transported back to IPL duty in Sharjah, as Kishan ignited India’s powerplay effort by lashing his opening over, the sixth, for 16 runs, including a towering first-ball six over long-on.It was a continuation of the form and confidence with which he had helped the Mumbai Indians seal the IPL in November, and having whipped his first ball in international cricket, from Archer, off his legs for four, he clattered along to his half-century from 28 balls. He struck four of India’s nine sixes – more than England’s entire line-up could muster between them – and confirmed, at the age of 22, that India’s conveyor belt of preternaturally talented youngsters is once again whirling like a treadmill.Kohli goes back to basics
Throughout his innings, Kishan had a calm old head at the other end to guide him, and cajole him in equal measure. After back-to-back ducks in his last two international innings, Kohli admitted at the post-match presentations that he had had to go back to “focussing on the basics” to turn his form around, and – even allowing for a notable moment of good fortune on 10 – he managed just that with a final flourish that reaffirmed his majesty in this format.Kohli’s winning hit, a pull over backward square off Chris Jordan, carried him to 3000 T20I runs, and was his third six of the night, along with five fours. Rishabh Pant – overshadowed for once but never outmatched – served up a pitch-perfect cameo of 26 from 13 balls, with two fours and two sixes to reinforce the sense that normal service was being resumed after an off day on Friday. But on a night when England’s big guns had been spiked by a thinly-stretched but perfectly on-song five-man India attack, Eoin Morgan could find no combination of pace, spin or seam to unlock India’s rebooted batting line-up – one in which Suryakumar Yadav, the second injection of batting from Mumbai’s IPL-winning stable, wasn’t even called upon.1:54

Did we see a glimpse of India’s new approach to T20Is?

Roy the lone ranger in flatlining innings
For a man who had come into the series under a fair bit of scrutiny, Jason Roy’s desire to keep throwing the bat in spite of personal circumstance remains a priceless commodity. After opening the series with 49 from 32 in Friday’s uncomplicated chase, he again top-scored with 46 from 35 on Sunday – a scratchy affair while it was being compiled, but an innings that gained in stature as his team-mates’ struggles for fluency were revealed later in the innings. At no stage of England’s innings was it easy to hit through the line- and by the time Thakur was causing Ben Stokes to tear out what remains of his hair with a diet of scuttling cutters at the death, it seemed nigh on impossible. But not that it stopped Roy from trying, as he flogged the first ball of the second over, from Washington Sundar, high over long-on for six, before avenging Jos Buttler’s first-ball duck with a hoick through midwicket to disrupt Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s length.India spin it to win it
What little value existed for England was to be found behind square off the spinners – as Roy repeatedly attempted to prove as he unfurled his reverse-sweep time and again off the legspin of Yuzvendra Chahal. After an innings with as many missed connections as Craigslist, he finally nailed two in three balls to leave England handily placed at 74 for 2 after nine overs, especially with the prospect of Sundar’s offspin being tossed back into his leg-dominant arc.Sure enough, Roy did not hold back – climbing into Sundar’s very first delivery, only to find more height than distance and pick out Kumar on the midwicket rope. Jonny Bairstow perished shortly afterwards in near-identical fashion, as Sundar dropped the pace and reaped the rewards for another mistimed piece of big hitting. The depth of England’s batting is their main reason why they have risen to the top of the ICC rankings, but it’s rare that they’ve all fizzled in the same innings, rather than flame out in a more gloriously dramatic failure.Perhaps Buttler could have made the difference in the mid-innings, much as he’s been charged with doing for the Rajasthan Royals in recent IPLs. Instead, England’s Nos. 3-6 made 24 from 23 (Dawid Malan), 20 from 15 (Bairstow), 28 from 20 (Morgan) and 24 from 21 (Stokes). To a man, they committed T20’s cardinal sin, of getting in at an unspectacular run rate, then getting out before they could kick on.India loose, England looser
In a low-scoring contest, the fielding was always likely to play a vital factor, and after missing scarcely a beat in their opening-match victory, England seemed well placed to capitalise on another underwhelming display from India. The errors were dotted across the innings. Chahal missed a violent return chance off Roy; Bairstow scudded a pull through Yadav’s hands on the fence; Shreyas Iyer was beaten by the spin on the cover boundary as Morgan climbed into a wide ball from Thakur. And when Kohli demolished the stumps while gathering a gentle return from the deep, and threw the ball away for overthrows as he did so, the sense pervaded that India still weren’t quite back on their A-game.But the sum of those mishaps was nothing compared to the two critical moments in England’s reply. With Kohli on 10, and still not fully up to speed, Jordan found his edge off a leg-side waft, only for Buttler to spill a regulation take behind the stumps – his decision to go for the catch with both gloves fatally undermining his reach as he dived to his left. But that error was nothing compared to the goober to end all goobers. With Kishan climbing into his night’s work, Morgan had no choice but to fling the ball to his mid-innings lock-picker, Adil Rashid, in spite of the fear the left-hand batsman’s love of a lump over midwicket might prove to be a less-than-favourable match-up.And so it initially proved, as Rashid’s third ball was cuffed in front of square for a one-bounce four. But moments later, he seemed to have sprung the perfect trap. A front-of-the-hander skidded into Kishan’s bat and cramped his attempts at a follow-up, but Stokes, running in from long-on, made an unfathomable hash of the chest-high chance. Fingers pointed skyward … gaze averted to the deck, as the ball burst out of his grasp. And at 80 for 1 after nine overs, the puff had vanished from England’s game as Kishan celebrated his reprieve with back-to-back sixes in Rashid’s second over. The slider did for him before the over was out, but by then the game was gone.
