David Beckham jokes he's going to get 'killed' by his Man Utd friends as he pays glowing tribute to departing Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp

David Beckham joked that he would be "killed" by his Manchester United friends after lavishing praise on departing Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Beckham spoke highly about KloppAdmitted that he "loves" Klopp's personalityIs "sad" to see Klopp leave AnfieldWHAT HAPPENED?

Despite being an integral part of the glamorous and trophy-laden years at Old Trafford under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson, Beckham made a surprising revelation that he absolutely adores Klopp for his personality and his contributions to the sport. Given that the rivalry between United and Liverpool is one of the fiercest in football history, the lavish praise coming from a former Red Devil is a rare occurrence.

Speaking on the Smartless podcast, Beckham stated: "Even as a Man United fan, I love Jurgen. I love his character, his personality, and what he brings to the sport."

He went on to acknowledge the potential backlash from his United peers with a touch of humour, saying: "I am going to get killed by some of my Man United friends. I am sad to see him leave. What he has done for the club and the sport has been incredible."

Klopp bid his final farewell to Liverpool on Sunday, with Feyenoord's Arne Slot announced as his successor. The German manager is now a free agent and hence Beckham was asked if he would consider bringing Klopp to Inter Miami.

The former England captain dismissed the idea with a hilarious response: "We've not got much money left."

Playoffs in Delhi Capitals' sights as Kohli comes home

It’s streak v streak now; one team gunning for the top spot, the other fighting for another match of life

Kartik: Bowling a big worry for RCB at the moment

Big PictureThis is the third time this IPL that Delhi Capitals are coming back to their home venue, Feroz Shah Kotla, full of exuberance and positivity. They first did so on the high of having beaten Mumbai Indians in Mumbai. Then they did so having built a three-match winning streak on the road, in Bangalore, Kolkata and Hyderabad. On both occasions they came crashing down thanks largely to a slow and low home surface. On this homecoming, Capitals are on their highest high. They have won seven out of their 11 matches – teams have previously qualified with seven wins – and are looking for that one win to all but ensure progress to the next round. You might wager they are more or less in, but these wins can take them into the top two, which gives them two shots at making the final.Form Guide

Royal Challengers Bangalore: Beat Kings XI Kings XI by 17 runs, beat Super Kings by one run, beat Knight Riders Knight Riders by 10 runs, lost to Mumbai by five wickets

Up against them is an opposition on a streak itself, defying elimination, which has looked imminent for weeks now. Royal Challengers are hanging by a thread, but are not letting go of that thread. In their last three wins in a row, they have beaten Chennai Super Kings even though MS Dhoni needed two off the last ball, and Kings XI Punjab, who won the first 17 overs of each innings. It’s streak v streak now; one team is gunning for the top spot, the other fighting for another match of life. So expect Capitals to attack him with Rabada and Axar Patel or even Ishant Sharma, who has managed to keep him quiet. Shikhar Dhawan has been a success story for Capitals, playing the role of the senior batsman among extravagant youngsters but without dropping his strike rate too much. He had to work hard to get there after an insipid start to the season. However, he doesn’t have a great record against the traditional outswing bowling of Tim Southee and Umesh Yadav. Alex Wakely resigns as Northants captain after poor start to season

Adam Rossington will take charge of the Championship team, with Josh Cobb leading the Vitality Blast campaign.

David Hopps06-Jun-2019Alex Wakely has resigned as captain of Northamptonshire in both red-ball and white-ball cricket with immediate effect. His decision ends a period in which the club won the domestic T20 title twice – making Wakely the first captain in Northants’ history to lift two major trophies.Under Wakely’s leadership, Northants became one of the most popular T20 sides in county history as a heavyweight squad attracted growing admiration.Off the field, he encouraged a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere which helped to revive a small and financially-stressed county, and by doing so turned the club into one of the happiest in the country.Adam Rossington will take charge of the side for the Specsavers County Championship match away to Durham next week, with Josh Cobb leading the Vitality Blast campaign.”It’s been an honour and a privilege to captain Northamptonshire over the past few years but now I feel it’s time for someone new to have that honour,” Wakely said. “It’s not a decision I’ve taken lightly. I’ve deliberated long and hard with family and friends for several weeks.”A product of Northamptonshire’s academy and England’s captain in the 2008 Under-19s World Cup, Wakely took charge of the one-day side in 2013 whilst also becoming vice-captain under Stephen Peters in the Championship. That summer saw the Steelbacks claim the T20 honours at Edgbaston and also achieve promotion to Division One in four-day cricket for the first time in a decade. After missing the entire 2014 season through injury, Wakely was appointed captain in all formats in 2015. The following season, despite continuing financial constraints, Northamptonshire repeated their T20 triumph in Birmingham. In 2017 the team responded to Wakely’s insistence that they were ‘fed up with being average’ in the Championship and surprised many observers by logging nine victories in 14 games (the club’s second-highest percentage of wins in the competition, exceeded only in 1995) and sustaining a promotion challenge through to the final day of the campaign. But those standards have begun to fall away and Wakely’s disillusioned comments after another bad day with bat or ball had become increasingly common, culminating in an innings defeat against Glamorgan at Wantage Road.He led the side 198 times in all formats (a figure surpassed only by Geoff Cook, Jim Watts and Allan Lamb) and his tally of 20 first-class victories ranks him as one of the club’s top ten most successful skippers in the longer game since 1905.”Wakers is one of the best blokes in cricket, nobody has a bad word to say about him, said head coach David Ripley. “His captaincy record is there for all to see: trophies in the bag. I look forward to seeing him go on for many years as a player where he still has loads to offer.”Northamptonshire’s chairman Gavin Warren said: “Alex led the team during a period of financial challenge. He will go down in the history books as one of our outstanding leaders.”

Sky: Derby now want to sign new versatile player alongside Blackett-Taylor

Derby County want a striker in the January transfer window, and that's led them to show an interest in Notts County's Macaulay Langstaff. With 20 goals already this season, Langstaff is the top scorer in League Two, and Derby are one of a whole host of sides battling it out for his £1.5m signature.

A new number nine at Pride Park may have the opportunity to link up with winger Corey Blackett-Taylor after news emerged on Friday afternoon that the Rams made a bid for the Charlton Athletic man. That offer was rejected, but the player is into the final six months of his contract, which means there's real pressure to sell this month.

And they aren't the only ones on the Rams' January shortlist, with a League Two starlet also turning heads at the club seeking to return to the Championship next season.

Derby rival League One duo for Young

Sky Sports reports that Derby are interested in Jake Young at Bradford City, although they've yet to make a formal bid as they have for Blackett-Taylor. Intriguingly, mid-table Charlton are presenting competition, while relegation-threatened Carlisle United are also in for him.

As it stands, Bradford manager Graham Alexander regards Young as part of his plans for the remainder of the season and believes he could inspire a promotion push for a team that are currently down in 14th, seven points off the top seven in League Two.

Young may have edge over Langstaff

Young spent the first half of the season on loan at fellow fourth-tier side Swindon Town, but Alexander opted to recall him in January in light of his magnificent form. It was the previous Bantams boss, Mark Hughes, who had allowed him to leave.

The 22-year-old inspired some instant regret by scoring seven times and setting up three more in the month in August, remarkably notching nine direct goal contributions in the space of two high-scoring games (a 5-5 draw with Wrexham and a 6-0 win over Crawley Town). That form inevitably won him the league's Player of the Month award, and he repeated that feat in November after netting six times in five matches. Swindon manager Michael Flynn called it an "exceptional" achievement to land the prize twice before Christmas, and said Young is "a joy to work with".

Barkhuizen dropped & 16-goal star signed in Derby’s dream XI after January

Paul Warne could improve his Derby lineup this month for the challenge of winning promotion.

ByKelan Sarson Jan 19, 2024

Those hot streaks have powered Young to a career-high Transfermarkt valuation (£236k) and a season tally of 16 league goals, ranking him second in the table behind fellow Derby target Langstaff. On a per-90 basis, he leads the league for non-penalty goals (0.74) and total goal contributions (0.92), which could give him a slight edge over the Notts County man in the eyes of Derby's data department.

Another of Young's big assets is his versatility. While he's played every game this season as a centre-forward, he's also got experience playing on both wings, and that will give Paul Warne a variety of options if he wishes to use them.

While FIFA rules forbid a player from playing for three different clubs in one season, the Englishman hasn't played for Bradford since he was recalled, and that means Derby's hopes of unleashing him in League One this season are still alive. Given his irrepressible form in the division below, they'd expect him to handle the step up with aplomb.

Injured Andre Russell out of rest of the World Cup

Chelsea could sign "ruthless" £18m gem in late deal to end No. 9 curse

Over the last month or so, Mauricio Pochettino has been able to stop the rot at Chelsea, guiding them to five wins out of seven and into the League Cup Final to boot.

The Pensioners are still only ninth in the Premier League ahead of their clash with Liverpool, and while that is far from ideal for a club of their stature, things are starting to look up.

However, a strike force of Nicolas Jackson and Armando Broja – if he isn't sold – just isn't enough to genuinely challenge the best teams in the division.

However, Todd Boehly and Co could be about to address this significant weakness and sign a forward who could potentially end the club's long-running number nine curse.

Chelsea look north to end their striker woes

Earlier this week, Chelsea writer Simon Phillips revealed in his Substack that the Blues have made a late inquiry about Callum Wilson's availability this month.

He revealed that the west Londoners were interested in loaning the former Bournemouth man but that the Magpies were only interested in selling the 31-year-old if he were to leave this month.

callum-wilson-newcastle-united

While this development isn't ideal for Pochettino's side, the Toon's valuation of £18m would represent great value in today's hyper-inflated market, and with Phillips revealing Wilson himself is keen on a move to Stamford Bridge, there is every chance this deal could go ahead.

Callum Wilson could end the Blues' number nine curse

Few curses are more well-known in English football than Chelsea's number nine curse. Over the years, there have been some genuinely great players who have been goal machines elsewhere before signing for the Pensioners, pulling on that number and then seemingly growing two left feet.

Some of the most notable include Fernando Torres and Romelu Lukaku. The former went from scoring nine league goals in the first half of the 2010/11 season for Liverpool to managing just one in west London after making the switch midway through the season.

The Belgian had an even worse time with the shirt, as he scored a whopping 24 Serie A goals in the 2020/21 season before managing just eight a year later for Chelsea and then never playing for the club again.

So profound is this supposed curse that in an interview in the summer of 2022, then-manager Thomas Tuchel revealed that nobody wanted the number following Lukaku's disaster, saying: "It's cursed, it's cursed, people tell me it's cursed. There was not a big demand for No 9. Players sometimes want to change numbers but, surprisingly, nobody wants to touch it."

With all of that, the "incredible" Wilson, as he was described by his manager Eddie Howe, would be forgiven for feeling a bit of trepidation in keeping his number were he to sign.

However, based on his record in the Premier League and how well he coped with moving to the Magpies a few years ago, the England international could be just the man to finally break this insane curse.

In total, the "ruthless" forward, as journalist Chris Waugh described him, has made 215 top-flight appearances, scored 86 goals and provided 23 assists, meaning he has averaged 0.50 goal involvements per match throughout his career, which is a brilliant feat, and something the Blues could use if they are to lift silverware this season and fight for European football.

Ultimately, the curse will always weigh on the minds of the Chelsea faithful whenever a new exciting striker turns up at the club, at least it will until someone can break it, and that someone could well be Wilson.

Fabrizio Romano: Todd Boehly close to new off-field Chelsea appointment

Last year, Todd Boehly and Chelsea bought close to a 100% stake in French club Strasbourg for a sum of around £65m, and the Blues have already been able to use the link between the two sides to their advantage.

They sent Angelo Gabriel to Ligue 1 on loan last summer, and in January, Andrey Santos joined him in Alsace after he was recalled from an unsuccessful temporary stint further down the Premier League with Nottingham Forest.

Boehly intends to build a multi-club network with Chelsea at the centre in the hope of developing new first-team pathways for young players. In addition to France, the Blues have looked at opportunities in Belgium, Portugal and South America, and it's only a matter of time before they acquire another team.

Chelsea close in on Josh Marsh appointment

Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are closing in on a key appointment for their BlueCo group. Josh Marsh is set to join from Championship side Swansea as the new loans manager, with a deal described as "imminent".

Marsh, who's only 32, will look to strengthen the aforementioned connection with Strasbourg and the hope will be that he can oversee the movement of Chelsea players within an extensive multi-club network further down the line.

Marsh has already had dealings with Chelsea

Marsh started out as a scout at Wolves and Southampton before working his way up to a head of scouting role at Huddersfield. After four years with the Terriers, he left to join Swansea as their managing director of sport in 2022.

As part of his role in south Wales, Marsh has overseen player recruitment, and there have been a number of notable success stories. To begin with permanent deals, centre-backs Harry Darling and Nathan Wood, signed from MK Dons and Middlesbrough respectively in the summer of 2022, have already played 62 games apiece, while left-back Josh Tymon has notched five assists in 29 games since his arrival from Stoke last year.

Crucially, the Swans also seem to have mastered the loan market during his tenure, certainly when it comes to incoming deals. Brighton's Carl Rushworth has kept six clean sheets in his 32 games this season, Jamal Lowe has netted six times in his second stint at the club (on loan from Bournemouth) and Arsenal youngster Charlie Patino has notched seven direct goal contributions in 24 games. The club also did a bit of business with Chelsea last summer as they signed centre-back Bashir Humphreys, and they'll be pleased to see he's played 23 league matches so far.

From Eddie Hawkins and Kim Crabbe to Tyler Adams and Sophia Smith: The Black men and women that have defined the USMNT and USWNT

GOAL celebrates the Black men and women trailblazers that defined U.S. national teams

American soccer is filled with stories, even if the history of soccer in this country is still very much being written. For all of the big moments this game has had, the American game is still somewhat in its infancy, with most of soccer's great moments coming within the last decades.

Even so, there are plenty of stories to tell. Stories of success and failure, of winning and losing. There are stories of heroes and icons and legends, all of whom have played some part in making this game what it is today.

And, as the country celebrates Black History Month, it's important to remember that the story of American soccer could not be written without the contributions of so many Black players. From the very beginning, Black players have made the biggest of contributions to both the U.S. men's and women's national team, solidifying their place as legends and trailblazers.

Let's make one thing clear: those stories weren't always defined by fairness or equality. Soccer, and society, has come a long way, for sure, with so many Black men and women playing their part. There's still so much to do, though. There are so many stories left to be written as the game grows more and more.

GOAL looks back at some of the game's icons, their stories and their legacies, while also taking a glimpse into the stories still being written by the new faces of the USMNT and USWNT:

The great Gaetjens

He was at the center of arguably the USMNT's biggest-ever win. At the 1950 World Cup, the U.S. defeated England 1-0 to seal one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history. The man who scored the goal? Joe Gaetjens.

Born in Haiti, Gaetjens was one of the first people of color to appear for the USMNT. He wasn't an American citizen, as rules back then required players to only sign a declaration of intent to play for a national team. He never got that citizenship, either, nor a U.S. passport, but that didn't stop Gaetjens from etching his name in American soccer history.

Gaetjens' story, though, ended in tragedy. A member of a political family in Haiti, Gaetjens was arrested by the country's secret police and taken to prison in 1964. That prison, Fort Dimanche, was notorious for its brutality and, after being jailed, Gaetjens was never seen again.

Gaetjens' legacy hasn't been lost, though. He was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1950 alongside the rest of that World Cup team. To this day, the USMNT's win over England is still seen as one of the biggest upsets in this sport's history. Gaetjens was at the center of it, having scored one of the biggest goals this country has ever seen.

AdvertisementHawkins breaks through with USMNT

Eddie Hawkins' isn't the most famous player to ever represent the USMNT. He isn't the most decorated nor the most successful, either. But he is among the most important, as he blazed the trail that so many after him have walked down.

Prior to December 2, 1984, no African-American man had ever represented the USMNT; that was until Hawkins took the field against Ecuador in the Miami Cup. On that day, Hawkins made history, and the craziest part is that he didn't even realize it at the time. It would be five years before Hawkins even realized he had been the first U.S.-born Black player to represent the USMNT, as he didn't realize the magnitude of his achievement until years later.

“When you’re out there listening to the National Anthem, you wish you could just thank all of them at the same time,” Hawkins told U.S. Soccer. “Everybody’s little bit that went into it kind of came together. It makes you grateful for all the people that were behind you helping you get there.”

During Hawkins' rise to the USMNT, he didn't have many players to look up to that looked like him. Growing up in Washingtonville, N.Y., Hawkins fell in love with the game thanks to the work of Tony Martelli, an Italian coach that turned the small local community into a soccer hotbed. Among his best talents? Hawkins and his brothers, with the future USMNT midfielder soon realizing that soccer could be his best chance at a college scholarship.

After playing at Hartwick College, Hawkins earned his first USMNT call-up in 1984, joining the team for two friendlies against Ecuador for one solitary cap that would end up changing his life and those of many others.

After his career came to a close, Hawkins founded the Zen Soccer School near Chicago, a program that is focused on offering a diverse group of players the chance to forge their own path in soccer, just as Hawkins did in his youth.

Getty ImagesCrabbe & Gordon help define the USWNT

At the time of Hawkins' initial USMNT camp, the USWNT was still several months away from existence. The team didn't play its first match until August 1985, setting the stage for four decades of dominance that would follow.

In that same year, Kim Crabbe (pictured) was helping lead George Mason to the 1985 NCAA Championship. In that match, Crabbe and co. defeated future USWNT head coach Anson Dorrance, who would eventually spearhead the efforts that led the U.S. to their triumph in the first-ever Women's World Cup.

Impressed by what he saw in the NCAA Tournament, Dorrance called Crabbe up to the USWNT a few months later, making her the first black woman to be called into the national team.

“I understood how life-changing this could be," Crabbe told U.S. Soccer, "not only for my personal soccer career, but more importantly for women’s soccer.”

Crabbe didn't see the field during that initial call-up, so, while she did pave the way with the USWNT, it was Sandi Gordon who has the honor of being the first African-American female to see the field for the USWNT. Unlike Crabbe, Gordon did not play in college soccer. Instead, she was spotted during her time as an amateur, impressing Dorrance enough to earn a call-up and a debut against Sweden in July 1987.

“I have always been proud of who I am, but at the time I never thought of myself as being anything other than a player representing my country,” Gordon told U.S. Soccer. “I am a huge fan of our current USWNT as every one of them has earned their positions through fair competition and hard work. I hope the way I played was an inspiration to all young women across the spectrum and showed them that they can achieve any goal no matter what their background.”

Gordon went on to make seven total appearances for the U.S., with six coming in 1987. As for Crabbe, U.S. Soccer created the Kim Crabbe Game Changers award in 2022, honoring her contributions to the game. The award is given to a member of the soccer community who makes contributions to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, which Crabbe and Gordon both represented during those initial days of the USWNT.

For an entire generation of kids, Cobi Jones was their introduction to soccer. That wasn't just for Black kids, either. Whatever race or background, if you followed American soccer, Jones was your superhero.

After starring for the U.S. in the years following his 1992 debut, Jones really rose to prominence, like many of his teammates, at the 1994 World Cup. With his distinct dreadlocks and all-action style in midfield, the U.S. fell in love with Jones immediately.

"You feel that you are different, but you also feel that you have a responsibility to hold yourself in a certain way," Jones told MLSsoccer.com. "I always wanted to make sure that I carried myself with a certain amount of self-respect that was evident.
