Fabrizio Romano shares big Spurs update on Cristian Romero hamstring injury

Tottenham Hotspur have been handed some “bad news” with Fabrizio Romano sharing an injury update out of the club on Wednesday morning.

Spurs injury news

Ange Postecoglou hasn’t had the best of luck so far this season when it comes to injuries, with summer signings Micky van de Ven and James Maddison ruled out until the New Year. As a result, the club’s form spiralled, losing four of a possible five games in the Premier League. They’ve managed to get things back on track with three successive victories, though, ahead of a trip to Brighton on Thursday evening.

However, they’ve now been handed another injury blow. Taking to X, Romano shared some "bad news", stating that centre-back Cristian Romero will be sidelined for 4-5 weeks with a hamstring issue.

Which centre-backs are Spurs linked with?

It looks as if Postecoglou, Daniel Levy and Johan Lange wanted to bring in a new centre-back in January before the news broke on Romero, so you’d expect they now view it as a need instead of a wish. Saying prior to the game against Nottingham Forest earlier this month, the Spurs boss said:

“I thought Ben Davies was outstanding [in Sunday’s win against Newcastle United]. He’s getting a run of games. We’ve got to be mindful he’s not a centre-back and he’s growing into that role. Ultimately we need to sign another centre-back, though, because at the moment we’re on tenterhooks in case something else happens.”

Romero was suspended earlier this season during Spurs’ mini-slump in form and had been a regular in recent weeks prior to going off against Everton on the weekend.

It’ll be interesting to see who Tottenham target over the coming weeks, and by the looks of things, a new centre-back could be top of Postecoglou’s winter window shopping list.

Perry's maiden ton and Jonassen's five secures series for Australia

Perry was on 97 with two balls left in the innings but a dropped catch allowed her to reach three figures then New Zealand collapses after a promising start

Daniel Brettig24-Feb-2019Australia maintained more than two decades of dominance in their Rose Bowl encounters with New Zealand as Ellyse Perry and Jess Jonassen led the hosts to a blistering 95-run victory at Karen Rolton Oval that sealed the series with one match to play.Perry formed the spine of Australia’s innings after they were sent in by New Zealand’s captain Amy Satterthwaite, shrugging off an early wobble at 3 for 85 to form a critical stand worth 98 with Beth Mooney before accelerating grandly in the final overs to notch her first ever ODI century. The New Zealand reply, having fallen a mere five runs short of Australia in the series opener in Perth, appeared to be on course as Satterthwaite and Sophie Devine set up a more than useful platform at 2 for 93 in the 21st over. However, Jonassen intervened with the key wicket of Devine, lbw on the back foot to a ball that skidded through straight, and thereafter the left-arm spinner enjoyed the best ODI bowling day of her career, scooping 5 for 27 as the tourists fell a long way short of their target on a warm afternoon in Adelaide.Thins had begun far more promisingly for New Zealand, with the early progress of Australia contained by the loss of regular wickets that prevented any partnerships of note while Rachel Haynes, Meg Lanning and Alyssa Healy all fell inside the first 23 overs.Perry, known for her preference to build an innings steadily before moving through the gears later on, was thus left with plenty of overs in which to bat, but needed to find an ally capable of turning the strike over.Mooney, so vital in the Brisbane Heat’s WBBL final victory over Perry’s Sydney Sixers earlier in the season, provided precisely this kind of supporting act, allowing the Australians to build to what appeared to be an ideal platform entering the final 10 overs.Amelia Kerr gave the innings a decided twist when she found a way past Mooney, Elyse Villani and Ashleigh Gardner in the space of four balls, but Jonassen provided vital support to Perry in the closing overs as the pair raised a stand of 44 in 35 balls.Assured as she reached the cusp of a hundred, Perry was nonetheless fortunate to reach the milestone, as her aerial hit out to deep midwicket burst through the fingers of Anna Peterson before scuttling away to the boundary to mean she has now scored a century in both Tests and ODIs for Australia. In pursuit, Suzie Bates was gone early on when she dragged an exultant Perry onto the stumps, but Satterthwaite and Devine seemed very much to be giving New Zealand the chance of levelling the series.Jonassen, though, had other ideas, plucking five wickets while Satterthwaite was fired out by a tremendous flat throw from Villani as the visiting captain was involved in a mix-up between the wickets with Hayley Jensen. In the end, the Australians were toasting a match and series victory with more than 12 overs to spare, meaning they have retained the Rose Bowl on every occasion since 1999.

FIFA threatened with legal action over new Club World Cup in United States that will feature Manchester City and Chelsea

FIFA has reportedly received threats of legal action from Fifpro and the World Leagues organisation over the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

Player unions and World Leagues unhappy with scheduleConcerned with player welfareWants the event to be rescheduledWHAT HAPPENED?

According to in a concerted effort to challenge FIFA's plans, Fifpro and the World Leagues organisation have sent a strongly worded letter to the governing body of world football, expressing their concerns about the schedule of the expanded edition of the Club World Cup that is slated to take place in the United States in June 2025, with prominent European clubs such as Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Chelsea participating alongside other top teams from around the world.

They argue that FIFA's decision to expand the Club World Cup and its overall match calendar has adverse consequences, including "economic harm" to domestic leagues and a "significant injury risk" to players. Additionally, they accuse FIFA of prioritising its commercial interests over the welfare of players and the integrity of the sport.

The letter calls upon FIFA to reconsider the scheduling of the competition and to engage in further discussions regarding the international calendar. This plea comes ahead of the upcoming FIFA Council meeting in Bangkok, where crucial decisions regarding the future of football tournaments will be deliberated upon. The two organisations have already sought legal advice on the matter and could potentially open litigation if FIFA refuses to pay heed to their demands.

DID YOU KNOW?

The proposed format for the new Club World Cup includes three group matches followed by up to four knockout games, spanning from June 15 to July 13. Hence, the players need to be back in action within two weeks of the Champions League final which has raised concerns about fatigue.

Meanwhile, the existing Club World Cup, featuring the Champions League winners as the sole European representatives, will still take place in December under the new name of the Intercontinental Cup. Fifpro and the World Leagues organisation advocate for the elimination of this tournament, which they view as redundant and potentially detrimental to player welfare. As FIFA navigates the mounting pressure from key stakeholders within the football community, the fate of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup hangs in the balance.

Edu could make January move for club’s high earner who really likes Arsenal

Arsenal, and sporting director Edu by extension, could move for a club's star in January – with there being a belief he likes the idea of joining.

Arsenal sliding down Premier League table

The Gunners have endured a torrid time of late, winning just once in their last five Premier League games and now five points off table-toppers Liverpool.

Arsenal express interest over move to sign "brutal" star ahead of Man City

This would be some statement from the Gunners…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 4, 2024

After the club spent over £200 million last summer, in an effort to help them clinch their first league title in 20 years, manager Mikel Arteta is under pressure to turn things around and quickly.

Arsenal luckily have 15 days till their next top flight encounter, a home clash against struggling Crystal Palace on January 20, which gives club transfer chiefs time to potentially bolster Arteta's ranks.

The north Londoners have been linked with signing a new striker, midfielder and full-backs this month. They were however dealt a major blow in their pursuit of top target Ivan Toney, with Brentford boss Thomas Frank confirming he is set to remain at the club this month.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

"He is a Brentford player. He is here, we miss a few offensive players and I cannot see why we should sell him. I would love to have him here for a long time," said Frank on Toney's future at Brentford.

"It is not for me to discuss (an offer), but if I could ever recommend one, it would need to be an unbelievable price, so he will stay here."

FFP restrictions have also given Arsenal a pretty tight January budget to work with, according to reports (Miguel Delaney), so Edu and co may have to be clever and make the most ideal signings possible.

One player who could fall into that bracket is Crystal Palace star Michael Olise. Since returning from injury, the Englishman has gone on to enjoy one of the best seasons of his career to date, scoring five goals and registering an assist in just nine league appearances.

Arsenal were linked with a summer move for Olise, and now it appears they could reignite that interest mid-season.

Olise prefers to join Arsenal

According to Football Transfers, Arsenal could potentially make a January move for Olise and it is believed the £100,000-per-week midfielder would "very much prefer" to join them over Man United.

While a summer move is seen as more likely as things stand, the report claims a January deal is still possible if Arsenal make significant sales first.

Eagles boss Roy Hodgson certainly hopes that won't be the case. The former England boss is a big fan of Olise, as is Arteta apparently, with Hodgson calling Olise an "enormous talent".

"What I make of him is that I think he is an enormous talent," said Hodgson.

"He has got a great possibility to have a wonderful career and a wonderful future. We can only hope we at Crystal Palace can give him that platform.”

No deal was done, with David Beckham and Inter Miami able to lure the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner to the United States. Messi is playing with a smile on his face again there, with major honours already being collected, and remains convinced that he made the right career call.

WHAT ROMANO SAID

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has explained how Messi came to that conclusion, telling the podcast: “I think it was not financial, I think it was for family reasons and also because he was close to David Beckham, and he had the chance to build a squad with some players who are his friends, like [Sergio] Busquets and [Jordi] Alba. He had the opportunity to create what he wanted there – that maybe would have been different in Saudi. There are different reasons, but he prepared his move to Inter Miami a long time ago. I would not say the move was close, it was a possibility, but it was never that close from what I heard.”

Santner's last-ball six seals dramatic win after Dhoni, Rayudu fifties

Super Kings made the required 18 off a controversial last over – during which a no-ball was revoked – after falling to 24 for 4 in the Powerplay

The Report by Peter Della Penna11-Apr-201912:06

Tait: Dhoni sometimes forgets he is not a match official

Mitchell Santner’s dramatic last-ball six capped Chennai Super Kings’ fourth successful chase of the season, and sixth win overall, as the visitors recovered from a massive hole at 24 for 4 in the Powerplay to pull off a chaotic four-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals.Ben Stokes was tasked with 17 to defend off the final over but just as he had famously fallen short against Carlos Brathwaite in the final of the 2016 T20 World Cup, he was outdone again by a combination of Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni and Santner. Jadeja slapped an off-balance six off the first ball of the over before Stokes overstepped on the next ball to create a free hit for Dhoni.Stokes bounced back with a slower ball for two before bowling Dhoni with a yorker on the third legal ball of the over. Santner’s final-ball heroics wound up erasing a minor controversy that brewed after the fourth legal delivery of the over. Standing umpire Ulhas Gandhe clearly signaled with his arm for a no-ball after Stokes delivered a full toss well over waist height to Santner but then rescinded his call, prompting Dhoni to charge onto the pitch to remonstrate with both Gandhe and leg umpire Bruce Oxenford but to no avail. With four to get off the final ball, Stokes bowled one well outside off stump for a wide to give Santner a second crack with two to tie and three to win. On the redo, Stokes missed his length going for a yorker and Santner responded by heaving a full delivery over the bowler’s head to end the match and strengthen Super Kings’ position at the top of the table, now four points clear of a trio sitting on eight points each.Royally mediocreThe home side scraped their way to 151 for 7 through a series of starts that were never converted. Eight of the nine batsmen who came to the crease reached double-digits, but none made more than the 28 from Stokes at No. 6 after they were sent in at the toss.Royals had decent momentum at the start of their innings having reached 31 for 0 in the third over before Deepak Chahar convinced Dhoni to review a not out decision on field with Ajinkya Rahane on 14. The ball appeared to be angling down leg initially but Dhoni finally signaled to go for the review on the brink of the 15-second cutoff. It proved to be a key moment as the replay showed the ball striking leg stump flush for the crucial third red to overturn the decision. It wound up ending the largest partnership of the innings. Only a late burst from Shreyas Gopal and 18 runs in the final over took Royals to a competitive total past 150.Yellow cautionContrary to the hot start from Royals, Super Kings got off to a miserable early reply. Shane Watson was bowled four balls into the chase with a beautiful delivery from Dhawal Kulkarni that held its line. Suresh Raina then committed a juvenile error loafing a single to fine leg as he watched Jofra Archer field, not expecting a throw to be sent to the non-striker’s end where Archer had a direct hit with Raina a foot short to make it 5 for 2 in the second over.Faf du Plessis picked out one of the two boundary riders in the Powerplay at deep midwicket to gift Jaydev Unadkat a wicket in the fourth over. Stokes looked like he was making a bid for Man of the Match when he pulled off an early contender for catch of the tournament at backward point, flying to his left to knife Kedar Jadhav’s attempted cut off Archer to make it 24 for 4 with one ball to go in the Powerplay.Dhon’t count MS outBut the Super Kings captain flipped the script by combining with Ambati Rayudu for a 95-run stand. Momentum truly started to shift in the 10th over when Dhoni charged Gopal to loft him over long-on for six. He slog swept IPL debutant Riyan Parag in the following over to continue the counterattack before a third six off Gopal in the 13th.Until that point, Rayudu had been milking singles and twos but gained confidence from Dhoni’s aggression and soon uncorked a sweetly driven six off Stokes in the 14th over. Rayudu brought up a 41-ball half-century before he fell in the 18th over, brilliantly caught by Gopal at deep midwicket off a Stokes slower ball.Dhoni fought off getting hit in the helmet by Archer in the 17th over to eventually bring up his 50 off 39 balls with a two behind point off Archer in the 19th over, after which he started sucking wind heavily. Another two required an extended break with the physio coming on the field while Dhoni caught his breath. A four flicked off his pads to end the 19th over brought the equation down to 18 off the final frame to set up the thrilling finish.

Spurs could find new Eriksen & Dembele by signing bargain £15m talent

Back in December, Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou revealed that signing a centre-back was his priority for the January transfer market.

In the days before the market opened for business, it became clear that the pursuit of previous top target Jean-Clair Todibo had been abandoned, with Genoa's Radu Dragusin targetted instead.

Ange Postecoglou.

A deal for Dragusin is wrapped up to follow the surprise loan acquisition of forward Timo Werner – formerly of Chelsea – but there is still a key area of the pitch that has yet to be addressed.

Postecoglou is understood to have notified technical director Johan Lange that he desires a centre-midfielder this month, and now, with other moves tied up, such an endeavour can receive full focus.

Spurs transfer news – midfielders

Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr are playing at the African Cup of Nations for the next month in what accentuates the need for a fresh face in the engine room, though a move is unlikely to be carried out in haste and for this reason, it's unlikely that £50m will be forked out on Chelsea's Conor Gallagher.

With this in mind, a move for linked star Adam Wharton might be a good move, with Football Insider recently revealing that Blackburn Rovers might be compelled to accept a bid of £15m for the 19-year-old, who is enjoying quite the start in the Championship.

Spurs – alongside Crystal Palace and Everton – have been impressed with Wharton and could now find the perfect opportunity to complete the winter spending without rocking the boat too hard with a 'marquee' addition.

Adam Wharton's style of play

While Gallagher would be a brilliant addition, he would demand regular match action and this could be detrimental to the fluency and cohesion of the current crop.

Wharton, however, could be the perfect addition, still in his teenage years and likely happy to play a bit-part role initially, integrating him into the starting set-up with greater regularity over the coming seasons.

Tottenham really want to sign "mega money" midfielder alongside Gallagher

Postecoglou is eager to reinforce his engine room.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 11, 2024

Having amassed 49 appearances for Rovers thus far, Wharton has scored three goals and supplied five assists, starting 12 times in the Championship last season (including the final five fixtures of the campaign.

His manager Jon Dahl Tomasson was delighted with his progress and touted him for big things after this emphatic introduction, saying: "Adam, on the ball, he has a Champions League level. I've been a Champions League player myself, I've coached in the Champions League so I know what you need."

This year, as per Sofascore, the Englishman has started 20 times in the league already, posting one goal and three assists, completing 84% of his passes, averaging 1.4 key passes, 2.3 tackles and 5.5 ball recoveries per game and succeeding with 67% of his attempted dribbles.

One scout has also said that he "has excellent ball control, great passing technique, good agility and quick decision-making contribute to his effectiveness in both offensive and defensive phases, versatile playmaking abilities."

Increasingly confident as a multi-functional midfielder, Wharton also ranks among the top 19% of midfielders across divisions similar to the Championship over the past year for progressive passes, the top 15% for interceptions and the top 22% for tackles per 90, as per FBref.

With such a skill set, Spurs could get their mitts on an industrious and elegant midfielder, blending tenacity and technique to great effect to possibly even emulate the success of revered former star Mousa Dembele.

Imagine Adam Wharton & James Maddison

"For me, he is a genius. An unbelievable player."

The words of erstwhile Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, whose effusive remarks concerning Dembele perhaps encapsulate his brilliant style, with his countryman Kevin De Bruyne even going as far as to say that the former Belgium international was "the best in the world" in his position.

Completing 249 appearances for Tottenham, Dembele was renowned for his control and command in the centre of the park, with opponents outthought and outfought each and every game and Spurs fans in awe of his effortless displays.

With such a remarkable balance of quality in his craft, if Wharton could replicate some of said talents then it would only serve him well as he pushes for prominence at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Young Wharton certainly possesses some of the same traits – he can pass, recover the ball with great efficiency and beat opponents with his dribbling ability.

And with James Maddison pulling the strings ahead of him, Postecoglou could even create the new version of Dembele and Christian Eriksen, with the latter even saying in the past that Dembele is the best player he has ever played with.

Eriksen signed for Tottenham from Ajax for £11.5m back in 2013 and chalked up 305 appearances, posting 69 goals and 90 assists and earning acclaim as one of the finest playmakers across Europe.

Christian Eriksen while playing for Tottenham

Now 31 years old and playing for Manchester United, the Dane is not the player he once was but he does have a worthy successor down the N17 in Maddison, who signed for Spurs from Leicester City for £40m in the summer.

Described as a "magician" by Statman Dave, the England international scored three goals and supplied five assists from 11 Premier League outings this season – winning August's Player of the Month and impressively averaging 2.9 key passes per game – before an injury in November halted his progress.

Nonetheless, the 26-year-old will return soon and could be bolstered by an all-encompassing talent such as Wharton, who could develop quite the partnership with the midfielder over the coming months.

Given that Wharton is available for such an affordable fee, it's a no-brainer that Postecoglou makes his move swiftly and maintains the balance and fluency as Tottenham continue to improve and bloom as a force in the Premier League once again.

Royals need to brace for Capitals' spin choke

The sides meet for the first time this season, with Royals needing to do all the running to remain in contention

Can Royals upset the resurgent Capitals?

He is managing an elbow injury, has taken over the captaincy mantle at a difficult time, but is clear his sights are only on the next week and a bit. A knock such as his – an unbeaten half-century – has allayed questions over his personal form and doubts over whether he walks into the XI, for the moment. And Royals simply have to live in the moment now.Form Guide

Having ticked a box against Mumbai Indians for a third win, Royals need to win at least four more games, or all five if mathematics plays a part. In their minds, they have to now approach this like a five-match series with the first one at home. It cannot be a bad place to start.Delhi Capitals have every right to feel like a restless kid who feels stifled at home and wants to get out. They have not enjoyed home comforts like some of the other sides. The surfaces they have played on there have been ordinary, at best. If they expected a trip down the road to Jaipur will rejuvenate them, they will be mistaken. The surfaces at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium too have been sluggish, much different to the zip and bounce fast bowlers have enjoyed here previously. Still, it hasn’t been as bad as the ones at Feroz Shah Kotla. His void was filled by Sanju Samson, allowing Steven Smith to take his favourite No. 3 position. That’s unlikely to change come Monday. The question they may have is, do they persist with Ashton Turner, who has made two first-ball ducks in two games playing as a specialist batsman, or bring in Liam Livingstone?Shikhar Dhawan’s rediscovery has eased the burden on Delhi’s middle order. Royals have lost 22 wickets to spin, the most among all teams this season. Their run rate of 7.3 is the third lowest against this variety. Capitals have no reason to deviate from their three-spin attack of Amit Mishra, Sandeep Lamichhane and Axar Patel. Not even if there’s a hint of grass, which proved to be deceptive on Saturday. Shikhar Dhawan’s strike rate of 135.2 is comfortably his best in the IPL since 2016. Thrice this season, he’s been out to the slower delivery against the pacers. The Rondo: GOAL USA roundtable on Alex Morgan's last dance, Emma Hayes' first camp, and the USWNT's June squad

Our writers debate Emma Hayes' first USWNT roster, with big names brought back into the fold

Emma Hayes' tenure as coach of the USWNT is officially underway. The former Chelsea boss worked wonders in London, but now faces a different kind of challenge on the international stage. After a disappointing World Cup showing in 2023, the USWNT will look to push back to the top of global soccer in Paris this summer at the Olympic Games.

And it all starts next month.

Hayes has picked her first roster, and there are plenty of talking points. Alex Morgan is in the fold, but Lynn Williams didn't make the cut, while Ashley Sanchez sits out, too. However, does any of that matter? This is the strongest roster the U.S. have ever bolstered, but still… there's questions over whether or not the ex-Blue will be a success stateside, on Morgan's role in this team and the June camp roster.

Piece it all together, and it adds up to an intriguing start for the new manager, who will have to battle the sky-high expectations of the most difficult job in women's soccer.

To break it all down, GOAL has enlisted global women's soccer writer Amee Ruszkai, as well as the usual cast of GOAL US writers, in the latest edition of… .

GettyPoint blank: Will Emma Hayes be a successful USWNT boss?

Amee Ruszkai: Yes. She’s a proven winner, she knows what it takes to cope with pressure and she represents a healthy balance between someone who is a breath of fresh air but who still understands all things USWNT, having spent several years at the start of her coaching journey in the United States. Hayes has spoken about how, after an exhausting season with Chelsea, this new role and the Olympics can reenergize and reinvigorate her, too, which all sounds really positive.

Ryan Tolmich: Maybe not initially. Hayes has been given a tough, tough task here. Preparing a group for the Olympics on just a few weeks' notice is almost impossible, even for a coach at Hayes' level. The U.S. will need things to bounce their way if they want gold in Paris. If they don't win in all? That's fine, too. This summer is just the start for Hayes, who is tasked with rebuilding the program from the ground up. It'll take time for us to see the fruits of that – if there are any fruits to be had – but Hayes' resume tells you not to bet against her when she's given the tools to create something special.

Jacob Schneider: Considering she’s coming from Chelsea, London’s football club, the answer is yes … Alright, jokes aside, Hayes will be an immediate hit with the U.S.

Anyone who has followed the Blues appreciates her tactics, and has witnessed the brilliance she plans out for her players on the pitch. She’s a sensational manager on the touchline and that it will transition over with the USWNT.

The record clearly speaks for itself: five FA Cups, seven WSL titles, two League Cups, one community shield and multiple brilliant European competition runs. She knows how to coach at the highest level and she’s a proven winner, which is exactly what the USWNT needs right now.

AdvertisementGettyWho has the most to prove this June camp?

AR: US Soccer and Lily Yohannes. She’s undecided on her future and while the federation and team won’t want to pressure her into an answer, as it’s her own to make in her own time, it will certainly want her to choose the USWNT (over the Netherlands).

Proving to Yohannes that the U.S. is the place to be is key and Hayes finally coming in will surely help, especially with her track record of developing young players. The U.S. has a lot of young talent coming through but — having seen what she’s done on the big stage in Europe at 16 years old — Yohannes is special so it’d be a huge boost to have her represent the USWNT.

RT: Casey Murphy feels like the answer here. With Alyssa Naeher out, at least for now, Murphy looks to be the USWNT's No. 1 goalkeeper in this camp. For a while, it looked like Naeher was going to hold on to be the Olympic starter, giving her one last tournament in a USNWT shirt. Her injury, though, makes that less clear. Can Murphy do enough to seize the No. 1 shirt? The USWNT will hope so, even if it just leads to a more interesting competition should Naeher return.

JS: It’s Alex Morgan, right? That assumes she’s healthy, of course, as Morgan has missed considerable time with an ankle injury. The USWNT has an insane amount of attacking players to work with, and Sophia Smith is in absolutely ridiculous form at the moment. It's also notable that Cat Macario and Hayes have a relationship from their time at Chelsea – odds are that chemistry doesn’t just up and vanish.

Morgan is the most experienced attacker of the lot for the USWNT, but there are more in-form and healthy players ahead of her. She needs this camp to prove to Hayes that she is still the starting striker for this team, and that she is the best choice to lead the line in Paris.

USA Today ImagesWho is the biggest snub from the USWNT roster?

AR: Lynn Williams. She offers so much to any team, in and out of possession, and she’s in great form right now. The other side of the coin, of course, is that the forward areas are just so competitive, so while it’s the biggest snub, it's also not a total shock that she’s missed out. That's just how it goes with the USWNT's attacking pool at the moment.

RT: Generally, this roster feels about right. There are a few surprises, such as newcomers Sam Staab and Hal Hershfelt but, overall, the heavy hitters are all here.

Outside of the injury absences, there's one missing player that sticks out: Olivia Moultrie. She's on the training squad, so she's involved, but won't be playing in these games. That's disappointing given how well she played in her USWNT chances.

A spot was there for her, too, given the inclusions of Hershfelt and 16-year-old starlet Yohannes. All three are longshots for the Olympics at this point, to be fair, but it would have been nice to see Moultire get much-needed minutes this camp.

JS: Going to make a case for Williams and you’re going to agree with me, alright? She recently became the NWSL’s all-time leading goalscorer, and has been in relatively good form this season. She has three goals in six appearances after starting the season on the sideline. She started the semifinal and final for the USWNT in the CONCACAF W Gold Cup in March, and turned in two very good performances.

She brings something that Morgan can’t: pace. Williams is deviously fast, and can also slot out wide, if needed. Beyond Smith, the striker options aren’t players who you can bring on to spring a blistering counter off the bench late if you need a goal. Williams can do that, and more. It feels a bit cruel to not see her with this group after her performances for club and country of late.

GettyWith a plethora of attacking options, who are the starting front-three?

AR: Smith in the 9 with Jaedyn Shaw and Trinity Rodman either side of her. Mallory Swanson has shown great things recently and can really press to start, and what Morgan brings to the table as a pure 9 is always top quality – something that will suit certain games and moments in the Olympics. However, Rodman, Smith and Shaw feels so strong. As for Macario, she might be at her best in the 10, so it will be interesting to see how Hayes uses her.
RT: This is the million-dollar question, isn't it? There are plenty of ways you can go, and the good news is that any and all of them might be right.

Assuming the U.S. plays a 4-2-3-1 with Shaw as the attacking midfielder, go with a front three of Rodman, Smith and Swanson. That trio is dynamite, with each player having the ability to open up a game at a moment's notice.

Will Hayes go with those three? Too soon to tell. There are plenty of combinations that could work. But the Rodman-Smith-Swanson trio feels like the most dynamic one on offer for the U.S.

JS: This attack is being built around Smith. She is the future of the USWNT, period. That said, the US should be playing her centrally and not placing her on the wing, like both Twila Kilgore and Vlatko Andonovski did in previous months.

Choosing who to play out wide and at the 10 is where things get difficult, but that’s all part of what makes this group so exciting. There are so many good options. On the left Swanson, and on the right will be Rodman with Rose Lavelle at the 10. It feels awful to not have Shaw in the XI, but the thought process is how to get the most out of Smith – and this group is the best supporting cast for that task.

Rangers looking to beat Bournemouth and Norwich to in-demand defender

Rangers will be well aware of just how important the January transfer window is. The Gers sit second and eight points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic with two games in hand in the Scottish Premiership. Philippe Clement's first transfer window at the club will afford the boss his first chance to shape his squad exactly how he wants it and bring in some players specifically suited to his style.

The former AS Monaco man has already made some changes, welcoming Fabio Silva on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers and allowing Sam Lammers to leave. Now, he could dip back into the market to sign an in-demand defensive reinforcement.

Rangers transfer news

With Clement getting his first chance to make his mark on the current Rangers side that he inherited from Michael Beale, he could shape a title-winning squad once again at Ibrox. He's so far had impressive success with the current squad, losing just once, which came against rivals Celtic. His side still sit behind in the title race, meaning that any reinforcements could quickly make themselves heroes.

Wolves striker Fabio Silva.

According to The Daily Record, Rangers chiefs are battling to sign Max Willoughby ahead of both Norwich City and Bournemouth, as Motherwell face a battle to keep hold of their young defender. The Gers already have a link to the defender, with his Grandad Alex Willoughby playing for Rangers in the late 1960s. Perhaps keen to follow in his footsteps, the Motherwell youngster could jump at the chance to complete a move to Ibrox this month.

As the weeks go by, Willoughby could certainly be one to keep an eye on in the January transfer window, as Rangers chiefs battle to secure his signature.

Willoughby an exciting long-term addition

Yet to make an appearance for Motherwell's first team, Willoughby could be wise to make the switch to Rangers if he gets the chance. The young defender is unlikely to get the chance to impress Clement just yet, but the potential to follow in his Grandad's footsteps could be a difficult one to turn down. If he can be part of a title-winning side this season too, it would certainly be quite the experience and one that he can only build on.

Whether his opportunity to make a first-team impact arrives at Motherwell or not remains to be seen, potentially handing Willoughby a tough decision to make. If he sticks, the chance could come his way this season. Meanwhile, if Rangers do come calling and he completes an ambitious move, the young defender may be forced to wait even longer for his first foray into first-team action.

Those at Rangers will be hoping to land one for the future, whilst keeping an eye on the title race this month. In the best-case scenario, they could end the month with reinforcements aplenty and a place at the top of the tree in the Scottish Premiership which would leave them on course to win Clement's first title at the first attempt.
