England duo Lauren James and Lauren Hemp lead the way as six nominees for the Women's PFA Young Player of the Year award are revealed

England trio James, Hemp and Maya Le Tissier headline the six selections for PFA Women's Young Footballer of the Year

The PFA Awards have been a highlight of the footballing calendar for 50 years, and the organisation have now revealed the shortlist for the 2023 Women's Young Player of the Year, with six brilliant players fighting it out for the award.

The 2021/22 winner, Lauren Hemp, looks to retain her title for the second-year running while three new nominees enter the fray along with two returnees in Chelsea star Lauren James and Manchester United ace Maya Le Tissier. Newcomers Katie Robinson from Brighton, Liverpool's Missy Bo Kearns and Aston Villa's Laura Blindkilde round out the top six.

Find out more about the six-woman shortlist below…

The Chelsea star was nominated for the award for the second year running after her 2022/23 campaign. Across 38 appearances for the Blues in all competitions, she scored eight goals and added five assists en route to a WSL title and an FA Cup final win.

Hemp, a four-time winner of the award, comes back as a nominee once again as she looks to retain her title. Her campaign for Manchester City this season saw her net 10 goals and 11 assists across all competitions.

Maya Le Tissier | Club: Manchester United | Nationality: England

Le Tissier's 2022/23 campaign saw Manchester United fall just short of both a WSL title and an FA Cup as the Red Devils lost out to Chelsea in the league and the final. A key presence in the Red Devils' backline following her move from Brighton, Le Tissier helped the club to their best-ever finish in the league, ensuring they'll be playing Champions League football for the first time this season.

Brazilian spent six years in FranceIs now in the Middle EastHas no competitiveness concernsWHAT HAPPENED?

The Brazil international finds himself in the Middle East six years on from his record-breaking €222 million (£190m/$238m) transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain. Things did not play out as planned for him in France, with Champions League glory proving elusive.

Neymar has now joined the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema in Saudi Arabia and is convinced that he has made the right move at 31 years of age. He is working on a lucrative contract, but insists that no backwards step has been taken when leaving European football.

WHAT THEY SAID

Neymar said when asked if would be getting enough competitive action at club level to ensure that he is at his best when joining up with the Brazil squad: "I assure you that soccer there [in Saudi Arabia] is the same. The ball is round, there's a goal, and if you look at the names that have gone to the Saudi league… I don't know whether it is better than the French league or not. I want to win titles for Al-Hilal, my head won't change much. Everyone said the same when I went to France [about competitiveness], and it was the place I was hit the most in my life. I am sure that it won't be easy to win the Saudi championship, other teams got stronger, have famous players. It will be very interesting and I am sure you will be watching."

Gio Reyna and Christian Pulisic are purring – but Tyler Adams' absence continues to cause concern: Winners and losers from the USMNT's October friendlies

Gregg Berhalter's attack impressed against Germany and Ghana, but without their captain, the U.S. still look vulnerable going the other way

The United States men's national team went into October's camp with one singular goal in mind. All through the buildup, the U.S. discussed proving, to themselves and others, that they belonged. They were a young, fun team in Qatar in 2022. By the time the 2026 World Cup rolls around, though, the USMNT wants to be feared.

DId they accomplish that this camp? No, they didn't, but, to be fair, they were never going to. It was an impossible task, making a statement that big over two friendlies, and it wasn't one that the U.S. would succeed in completing even on the best of days.

Still, the U.S. did make some sort of mark. They battled Germany, at least for 45 minutes, before succumbing to an elite team. They then beat the snot out of Ghana, crushing the Black Stars 4-0 to end the camp on a high.

Because of that, this camp will be considered something of a success. It wasn't perfect, by any means, as the U.S. really could have used a better performance against Germany. However, they clearly went back to the drawing board after that loss and took out whatever frustrations they had on Ghana.

Where does the USMNT stand on the world stage? It's still TBD. The road to 2026 continues on.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from October camp…

Getty ImagesWINNER: Christian Pulisic

Heading into camp, Christian Pulisic was playing better than he has been in a long, long time. His start to life at AC Milan has been just about ideal, and one of the storylines heading into these friendlies centered on whether he would carry his good form into USMNT camp. We got a positive answer.

Pulisic's goal against Germany was sublime, a true world-class goal from a player that is starting to remind the world that, on his day, he can be just that. It was the brightest moment for the U.S. in that game, and one that proved, once again, that Pulisic always shows up in the big moments.

His goal against Ghana was less impressive: a penalty straight down the middle to give the U.S. an early 2-0 lead. Still, the work he did outside of that goal was the big takeaway. Pulisic was dangerous all night and, as the game got out of hand, the U.S. had the luxury of taking him off after 45 minutes to leave him well-rested for his club.

He'll now return to Milan for a massive match against Juventus on Sunday and a Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain the following Wednesday. Huge games, for sure, but this break showed, once again, that Pulisic is the man for the big occasion for both club and country.

AdvertisementGettyLOSER: Brenden Aaronson

His form and confidence have clearly suffered over the last year, and there's plenty of time left to rebuild it. Still, at the moment, it's hard to really see where Brenden Aaronson can truly impact the game for the USMNT.

The Union Berlin midfielder remains just a bit took weak physically at the highest of levels, rendering his attacking skills less effective than they should be. He brings plenty of energy, and there are a lot of moments where that helps, but right now, he simply isn't adding anything tangible to the U.S. attack.

Aaronson is certainly a useful back-up, one that Berhalter can trust to bring energy off the bench. However, if he wants to truly take the next step and challenge for bigger roles, he'll need to step up in games like these to show what he can do against elite teams.

Getty ImagesWINNER: Gio Reyna

Every time Gio Reyna's name was brought up this week, Gregg Berhalter said some version of the same thing. The goal for this camp, he repeated, was to build Reyna back up, to prepare him for a return to Borussia Dortmund and, hopefully, a return to form. Mission accomplished, and then some.

We got 90 minutes or Reyna split across the two games. Against Germany, he was good. Not great, but good, as he went up against some familiar faces and certainly created uncomfortable moments. Against Ghana, though? Spectacular. Downright unplayable.

Now he'll return to Dortmund, where he's played just one game since the start of the season. He'll return with a big smile on his face and 90 more minutes in his legs as he looks to now break back into Edin Terzic's side.

If he can do that, look out. Neither club nor country has seen the best of Reyna for some time, and these performances showed that he may just get back to that soon.

GettyLOSER: Sergino Dest

It feels unfair to have Sergino Dest here. How can the Man of the Match in the win over Ghana be labelled as a loser? It's because, realistically, we didn't learn much about Dest in this camp. His positives and negatives were both on full display over these two games, but those are things we've known about him since he broke through with the USMNT.

We'll start with the positives, all of which came against Ghana. Dest, for many, was the best player on the pitch as he created absolute havoc throughout his 90 minutes. It was a performance that showed the best of his game: the attacking side of it.

As for the defensive side? Well, look at the Germany game. Dest was far from the only one at fault against Julian Nagelsmann's side, but he was one player that struggled. It was a defensive performance that did little to silence any doubters, giving them more fodder to take aim at his shortcomings.

And that all leaves us with a question: how do you weigh the positives and negatives of his game? Can he be trusted against the bigger teams? Can the U.S. survive with him? Or can they survive without him?

All will need to be answered going forward, and it'll help Dest's case that his primary competition at right-back, Joe Scally, didn't impress either. Even so, though, the U.S. will need Dest to be more Ghana and less Germany going forward.

Barcelona player ratings vs Real Sociedad: Ronald Araujo with the robbery! Stoppage-time stunner overshadows anonymous attack in undeserved victory

The Blaurgana left it late to secure victory in San Sebastian as they just about bounced back from defeat in El Clasico

A Ronald Araujo header in second-half stoppage-time rescued victory for Barcelona after a dire showing against Real Sociedad. The Uruguayan's goal served as a stark contrast to an otherwise miserable Blaugrana showing, and helped Xavi's side snag three fortunate points with a 1-0 win.

The home side almost took the lead inside 30 seconds, forcing Marc-Andre ter Stegen into an impressive diving stop early on. Barca's keeper was called upon again 15 minutes later, this time denying Take Kubo — who was excellent throughout — at the near post.

La Real had further chances throughout the contest, but a lack of incisiveness in front of goal, combined with a series of impressive stops from Barca's goalkeeper, prevented them from finding the net.

Barca, for their part, failed to create much. Robert Lewandowski was a peripheral presence in his return to the starting XI, and touched the ball just 12 times in a miserable 57 minutes of action. It is perhaps a product of his team's lack of control that he was unable to get into the game.

But that mattered little in the end. Araujo delivered the crucial blow in the 92nd minute, ghosting into the box and nodding Ilkay Gundogan's angled ball home — snatching a thoroughly undeserved three points.

GOAL rates Barcelona's players from Anoeta…

Goalkeeper & Defence

Marc-Andre ter Stegen (7/10):

Made two important saves in the early goings. Almost gave up a goal after fumbling a cross. Crucial in the second half as Barca held on.

Ronald Araujo (8/10):

Scored the winner with a tidy header, but he was most valuable at right-back for his defensive contributions. Barca didn't have much attacking to do, and he was steady on the right side.

Jules Kounde (5/10):

Fortunate not to give away a penalty, and outduelled by Oyarzabal for long stretches. A real regression from his impressive start to the season.

Inigo Martinez (8/10):

Booed from the outset against his former club, but he handled it pretty well. Better in the air than his partner, and made some vital recoveries.

Alejandro Balde (6/10):

Went on some impressive runs in the first half, and did his defensive duties reasonably effectively. Still hasn't hit the heights of last year.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesMidfield

Ilkay Gundogan (6/10):

Poor for 80-odd minutes, but vital late on when allowed to venture forward. A wonderful ball set up Araujo's winner.

Fermin Lopez (4/10):

Failed to get involved in an attacking midfield role. Only completed 12 passes, and was appropriately removed after 57 minutes.

Gavi (5/10):

Really should have scored in the first half with Barca's only real chance. Happy to do the dirty work, but earned himself a suspension for picking up his fifth booking of the season (already).

Getty ImagesAttack

Joao Cancelo (4/10):

Another fixture where he was deployed far higher up the pitch. Didn't get on the ball much, and was deservedly removed.

Robert Lewandowaki (3/10):

Barey touched the ball before the break. Unable to play more than an hour. A disappointing return to the starting XI.

Joao Felix (5/10):

Threw himself to the ground in an attempt to win a soft penalty, which was pretty much his only involvement. Probably his first bad performance for the Blaugrana.

Getty ImagesSubs & Manager

Ferran Torres (5/10):

Missed at the crucial moment, blasting a shot over from outside the box with less than five minutes remaining.

Pedri (5/10):

Thrown into a chaotic contest, and never really found a foothold.

Raphinha (6/10):

Barca's brightest sub. Caused problems with his movement on the right side. Perhaps deserves a start.

Lamine Yamal (N/A):

Did all of the running necessary, but didn't have much time to make an impact.

Xavi (5/10):

Another interesting system from the Barca boss, deploying Cancelo high up the pitch, and playing Felix just off Lewandowski. And it didn't work out. His side were battered from the first minute, and didn't start playing until late on. Unbelievably fortunate to get a win.

The centre-back has been having back issues, but even though he made a comeback in the team's 2-0 victory against Gillingham 11 days ago, he has since experienced a setback and was not included in the lineup against Accrington. With a number of injuries plaguing the squad, Parkinson would have been hopeful to see Tunnicliffe return to the starting lineup, however, his comeback was shortlived. Parkinson also confirmed that Tom O’Connor was another addition to the injury list as he suffered a blow on the weekend.

"Jordan is struggling, unfortunately," said Parkinson [via The Leader]. "We feel his problem with his hamstring is coming from his back so Jordan is going to be out for a period of time. Exactly what that is I am not sure yet. It really is tough for Jordan but unfortunately, we can't do anything about it. We have just got to try and get him back fit and once he is back fit this time, hopefully we can keep him out on the training pitch."

Rashford turned in an absolutely dismal performance against Newcastle, leading one frustrated fan to compile a list of his 11 mistakes in the first half. The striker failed to provide any support to the defence, touched the ball just 22 times – the second-lowest of any starter behind Anthony Martial – and failed to have a shot on goal. He was substituted on the hour mark for Antony.

United's dismal defeat leaves them seventh, four points behind current fourth-placed team Aston Villa. They could drop to eighth on Sunday if Brighton beat Chelsea.

WHAT TEN HAG SAID

Ten Hag refused to be drawn on his opinions on Rashford's performance but insisted he will speak to the England international one-on-one. He told : "I will talk to him and not the media."

The United boss was also disappointed with his side's first half display, but felt they did enough to score – Antony had a late goal ruled out before it struck Harry Maguire, who was offside. He added: "As I said, I will talk with my team. We had some chances. We thought we scored a goal but it was offside. We could have scored."

Hemp's Man City deal expires this summerClub have offered a new contractBut report says she is 'close' to Barca moveWHAT HAPPENED?

Hemp's current deal with City expires at the end of the season and the club was hopeful of tying her down to a new contract, offering her one in January. However, now reports that the England forward is 'close' to agreeing a switch to Barcelona instead.

Barca are the reigning European champions and adding a player of Hemp's quality – and potential, given she is still just 23 years old – will only strengthen an already incredible squad. For Manchester City, though, it would be a real blow to lose such a key player just when they are starting to seemingly turn a corner and re-establish themselves as consistent contenders in England.

DID YOU KNOW?

Hemp has yet to win the Women's Super League title but could well do so this season, with her playing a key role as Manchester City battle hard with league leaders Chelsea in a bid to end an eight-year wait to lift the trophy again.

The 'Curse of the Triple Captain' strikes again! Winners and losers as FPL-favourite Erling Haaland's day to forget costs Man City crucial points in the title race while Chelsea show signs of life under Mauricio Pochettino

The Norwegian missed chance after chance on Saturday as Pep Guardiola's side dropped crucial points after wins for Liverpool and Arsenal

This is the Premier League title race that keeps on giving, and with all three title contenders in action on Saturday, fans felt primed for another twist. It came at the Etihad Stadium, where Manchester City were forced to battle back to earn a draw against Chelsea as the defending champions put in a performance that suggested they will not have things all their own way going down the stretch.

For the eighth time in their last 13 league matches, City conceded the first goal as Raheem Sterling returned to the Etihad to haunt his former club, finishing off a slick Chelsea counter-attack three minutes before half-time.

At the other end, the missed chances were beginning to add up for City, and in particular Erling Haaland, who endured an evening to forget. The Norwegian goal machine had 10 attempts on goal during the game, but failed to take any of his chances, with a couple of his headed efforts absolute sitters.

Instead it was left to City's man for the big occasion, Rodri, to rescue a point eight minutes from time, though the result is a far more positive one for Mauricio Pochettino's resurgent Blues as they put in their third encouraging display on the road in succession.

City, meanwhile, now sit four points off the top, with their game in hand scheduled for Tuesday against Brentford. Though they will rue their missed chances, Guardiola will expect much better when the Bees come to town in three days' time.

GOAL breaks down all the winners & losers from the Etihad Stadium…

Getty ImagesWINNER: Mauricio Pochettino

Less than two weeks ago, some Chelsea fans were calling for Pochettino's head after the Blues suffered back-to-back defeats against Liverpool and Wolves in which they conceded four goals on both occasions. The Argentine, it seemed, was about to become the latest victim of Chelsea's infamous managerial carousel of doom.

How things can change. Following 3-1 wins at both Aston Villa and Crystal Palace, the Blues arrived at the Etihad with some confidence brewing, and also knew they had the capability of going toe-to-toe with City after holding them to a 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge earlier in the campaign. And from the very start, it was clear that the visitors believed they could ruffle City's feathers.

Pochettino opted to deploy Conor Gallagher in an attacking midfield role, with his main responsibility coming when out of possession as he largely man-marked Rodri. That led to the England man forcing a number of turnovers, from which Nicolas Jackson and Raheem Sterling – preferred to the less pacey Christopher Nkunku and Noni Madueke – could look to run in behind.

Chelsea created plenty of chances via this method, and on another day would have scored two or three goals. Instead, they were indebted to their defence (and Haaland's missed chances) for keeping City at bay.

Some have questioned whether Pochettino should switch to a back-three in recent weeks, but he stuck with a back-four here, and both Axel Disasi and Levi Colwill played starring roles in a display that suggested they could form a long-term partnership going forward. Disasi, in particular, shone, making countless clearances and blocks while celebrating his every intervention.

This wasn't a Chelsea team who have quit on their manager, and after a six months to forget in west London, there are finally some signs that Pochettino is figuring out how to get the Blues moving in the right direction again.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesLOSER: Erling Haaland

Haaland was at his clinical best just a week ago when he shot down a rigid Everton that had refused to budge, but here he was at his profligate worst.

Experts like to say that striker's should only be truly concerned when they are not getting chances, but Haaland took that mantra to the extreme by firing nine shots at goal and missing the target completely with five of them, completely misdirecting clear headers in the first half.

Haaland has made a career out of out-performing his expected goals ratio, but here he had an xG of 1.7, and his misses meant City missed out on two points which could prove priceless in the title race. Of course, Haaland has earned the right to have the off day after scoring 52 goals last season and 21 this campaign, even while being out injured for two months.

"Nine shots is a good stat, the next game he is going to score," said Guardiola post-match. "I played 11 seasons and scored 11 goals, one goal a season, so I'm not the man to give advice to the strikers."

But if City do miss out on that historic fourth consecutive league title, they will look back on this game and Haaland's profligacy as a huge factor.

Getty ImagesWINNER: Rodri

Rodri was eight minutes away from surrendering his truly remarkable record of not losing a game with City for over a year. And as Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne looked to be in no fit state to help him out, he had to take matters into his own hands.

The ball was flying around the Chelsea penalty area, and the midfielder struck it perfectly, sending it fizzing towards goal. It may have taken a deflection off Trevor Chalobah, but it was going in anyway.

It was Rodri's seventh goal of the season in all competitions, a hugely impressive figure for someone who is ostensibly a holding midfielder. Only Phil Foden, Julian Alvarez and Haaland have scored more for City in the league.

And few players can rival Rodri when it comes to stepping up on the big occasion. Ten of his 20 Premier League goals have given City the lead in a game, and here he saved them a point that could prove crucial in the title race. And in case anyone has forgotten, it was Rodri who scored the only goal in the Champions League final against Inter, at last ending City's long, long wait for Europe's holy grail.

LOSER: Moises Caicedo

If there was one Chelsea player who did not play to the level of their team-mates, it was Caicedo. The £115-million ($116m) midfielder was brought to the club to control games like these, but the Ecuador international again looked out of his depth at times.

Caicedo began the match by passing the ball straight to City inside the opening minute, and things got little better from there. He was fortunate not to be at least booked for a challenge on Jeremy Doku midway through the first half, and while he picked up a yellow card shortly after, that did not seem to curb his instincts to throw himself into desperate challenges.

More than once, Caicedo gave away free-kicks in dangerous areas, and he was probably one foul away from being given his marching orders. That he was able to stay on the pitch, however, shouldn't be something to celebrate for a player whose fee suggested he was going to be a transformative presence.
